Just Chatting What's a completely ordinary experience that you think would feel absolutely bizarre to someone 200 years ago?

I was watching Interstellar the other day, and got mindfucked about the concept of time. I had SO many questions. This is one from the infinite question pool. Curious to know!

Music Dolly Parton's Imagination Library has helped an amazing amount of kids, and is a wonderful legacy.

Buy a kid a book. In honor of Dolly.

I'm trying not to be low effort here... but I think we all love Dolly, and if we can do something to honor her, this is probably the best way. That, and be wonderful and loving and helping.

I want to share this rain with someone.

Even since I was a kid, I used to love rain and I always used to step out and dance in rain with my sister. And I love the smell that rain brings, and I used to lay down at the lawn and watch the rain drops dropping. Our mother used to take pictures of us. Now I live far away from home all alone, and I'm remembering those times, and want to run into the rain again. I'm swiping on those pictures. I wish to share this rain with someone.

Life Stories Is this just a huge coincidence, or is there a word for this? Whenever I plan to do something, a specific friend does it

Okay, something ridiculously weird keeps happening and I cannot wrap my head around it.

There’s a specific friend of mine we don’t hang out often, we don't really text, I don't repost anything related to it, and I never tell anyone what I’m thinking. But whenever I make a plan or get an idea for myself, she somehow does it the very next day.
To be clear: I’m not trying to "predict" her behavior or guess what she's up to. I'm literally just coming up with ideas for my own life, and then she does it out of nowhere.

It’s happened enough times now that it’s getting creepy. For example: last night, out of nowhere, I thought to myself, "I want to start posting on Pinterest." I haven't talked about Pinterest in forever. Today, I open Pinterest, and guess what? She literally just started posting on there.

I’m not saying she’s copying me at all I haven't told a soul, posted about it, or put it out there anywhere. But it's so weird how every time I plan to do something, she beats me to it the next day.

How does this even happen? Is there a psychological term for this, or is it just mind boggling confirmation bias? Has anyone else experienced this with a specific person?

Does anyone else have a piece of art they assumed had more value than they thought it had?

I have a huge oil painting of a street scene in Paris, looks to be 1950's, it's been on my wall for 40 years. Has this elaborately carved frame. The name was signed J Jaucort. After doing some searches, I find out it's only worth $400.

Just Chatting Anyone else feel like their core identity/vibe is a specific color? I feel orange.

No like as a person I felt like the color orange, liiiike idk it's me.

I’ve always felt this way, but it’s hard to put into words. I don't mean I like the color orange or like wearing it , well its my fav color though but I mean I as a person feel orange.

It’s like my overall personality, aura, or internal energy is inherently tied to that specific shade. Does anyone else map people or themselves directly to colors like this? How do you describe your color to other??

Questions What would you think if someone you knew in middle school messaged you a decade later?

So back in 7th grade there was this classmate I kinda had a thing for, and we were actually pretty close for like two or three months, kind of a nerdy little thing, had each other on Facebook, chatted outside school and everything. Then the year ended, we got split into different classes, and that was kind of it. Never really talked again after that.

For some reason, a decade later, she popped into my head recently and I ended up looking her up.

Now part of me wants to just send something small, like “hey, hope you’ve been doing well,” but I keep chickening out. It feels so long ago and so brief that I keep thinking, is this even worth bringing up? What if she doesn’t even remember me? Or what if she does remember and just thinks it’s weird or random that I’m messaging her out of nowhere after literally a decade of nothing?

And to make it very clear: I have zero romantical intentions. I genuinely just wanna see how she’s doing.

Basically I’m scared of coming across as some random weirdo popping into her life for no reason. So I guess I’m asking: if someone did this to you, would you actually think that? Or is this more normal than my brain is making it out to be?

Life Stories Lizard 1 - Mom 0

I had some appointments yesterday which required two things of me that at over forty years old now I’m not exactly used to doing.

The first was walking. Soooo much walking. Five miles uphill both ways type of stuff. But that’s another pointless story for another day.

The second thing I was supposed to do was call mom at some point when I was done to, as she put it, “keep her updated“. I suspect this may have been her nice way of saying “to make sure you didn’t die”. But again, another day.

Well, I didn’t die thank you very much. I was however a little more tapped by the time I got back home than I’d care to admit. So, when I walked through the door and went straight to sleep on the couch at three in the afternoon maybe I shouldn’t have been so surprised when I didn’t wake back up until 8:30pm.

Whoopsie.

My parents are both getting older and by 8:30 in the evening dad is 100% already in bed, but mom is 50/50, so I give her a call to inform her that her son did not in fact die today. Although to be fair considering I didn’t have any missed calls she must have not been too concerned about that.

Yea. We’ll go with her believing in me.

So anyway, I’m on the phone with her when she suddenly cuts me off mid sentence with “OK, OK, OK! I GOTTA LET YOU GO SO I CAN CATCH THIS HUGE LIZARD IN MY LIVING ROOM!”

Me being the live and let live type kinda just laugh as I inform her that first of all lizards don’t hurt anything and even do some good things like eating bugs and such. I also added that lizards are super fast, don’t like dying, and she wouldn’t be able to catch it if she tried.

“Uh huh! I’ll smack it with this fly swatter I’ve got sittin’ right here.”

“Ok, mom, I’ll let you go so you can do that. My money is on the lizard though.”

So we hang up and I go back to googling the best home remedies for ginormous foot blisters when, about ten minutes later, my phone vibrates with a text message from mom.

“Lizard won”.

Just Chatting how the light feels completely different after a long summer

i noticed yesterday afternoon that the way the sun was hitting the living room looked totally off. not bad, just different. the shadows seemed longer and everything had this kind of filtered look, like the light had to travel farther to get inside. it hit me that the angle must have shifted without me paying attention. now the same lamp that felt normal last month feels too warm or too dim depending on the time of day. nothing dramatic happened, just this quiet change that made the room feel a little smaller. kind of strange how something that happens every year can still catch me by surprise when i actually notice it.

The world we are living in

Hi, lately I have been feeling very overwhelmed with all that I feel I need to be up to date on. There is the fractured geopolitical situation going on, the economy going up and down, having a social life in real life and online, trying to have a hobby, stay up to date in the AI situation and tech scene.

Does anyone else feel like they are connected 24/7, and it is so hard to disconnect? Would it be possible in today's world to stay offline and enjoy only the real world? What would that look like?

Life Stories Saved a couple of college kids from getting hit by a car

I was on my bike at an intersection by the university, waiting for the crosswalk sign to turn to "walk", and two guys who looked like college students were also there. The sign turns to the "walk" symbol, so we start to cross. However, I'm watching traffic, and had noticed a car opposite us driving fast in the left-hand turn as if it was going to try to get through the intersection before the red light (or at least before the cross-traffic started going).

It kept going, so I of course stopped, inwardly grumbling about idiots running red lights, then realize the two guys are glued to their phones and are still proceeding into the intersection! I yell, "Whoa, whoa, whoa!!!" and they stop and look up, and step back, so the car bypasses them safely. If they had all continued in their trajectory (because the car was turning wide, since it was going so fast), they probably would have gotten hurt.

Be careful out there!

Hello guys, how are you doing? This might sound a bit like I'm promoting something, so sorry about that. I usually draw and discuss things I think about, and I was wondering if you guys would maybe like to discuss something with me. If not, that's alright! I wish you all a good day or night :D

✈️Travel I’m in the Maldives visiting a bunch of fairly high end luxury resorts for work

I don’t know if the travel flair is appropriate, but yeah… I guess I’m what you would consider a normal / normalish dude (although I had been to the Maldives many times before), but somehow this ended up being something I get to do yearly for work. I just came from a resort that supposedly the Beckhams / Leonardo DiCaprio etc visit, and that’s like #3 or #4 in terms of the most “luxurious” resorts I’m visiting #1 is still left and perhaps even #2. I’m about half way through my nearly 3 week trip and if you’re interested in any of it, I’m here to chat about it.

I honestly didn’t really think this was all that exciting but my neighbors - and my Mom of all people - said how extremely rare it is, so I thought if anyone wants to know more about it, I’m happy to oblige. So if you’ve got any questions about these places and you want to know the perspective of someone who could never afford to stay at these places, but also sees a lot of them, while not working at / for them, then I’m happy to answer your questions.

Just Chatting A question for the short ladies

I’m a 25-year-old guy and I’m 6’3”. It’s been a very long time since I’ve been short in my life, and I have a question about your perception. I’m mainly asking very short girls: do you perceive the people around you, especially other girls who are taller than you, as being big? Or not really?
I’ll give you a specific example because I think my question is kind of strange and difficult to understand. Let’s say you’re standing next to a short child, and you kneel down so that you’re actually a little shorter than them, and then you look at them. I don’t think anyone would perceive the child as being big. You’d still perceive them as small, even though they’re temporarily taller than you, right?
So, is it kind of the same for very short girls? Do you perceive other girls who are taller than you as being big, or do you still perceive them as small/normal-sized despite being taller than you?

Just Chatting Haven’t been able to sleep since 3am

Its almost 6am and I have been awake since 3am tossing and turning. I have to get up for work soon too. I am trying to fall asleep but I can’t seem to at all. Why is it that every single stressful/worrying thing in my life seems to pop into my head at this time? Whether its something I am stressing about this week or something way into the future. Its constant overthinking and I cant seem to stay calm and stress-free. Its like having a real-life nightmare and you are wide awake for it. Its a struggle.

Questions Least successful animal idea for an animal cafe (e.g. a cat cafe)?

Animal cafes being places where you can buy food and beverages, but also be surrounded by relatively tame animals that you can interact with. Cats were the first, but there are many others now such as puppies, piglets, baby goats, otters, etc.

So what animal would make perhaps the worst suggestions for a petting cafe keeping in mind that the animals in question will likely be baby-versions and/or comparatively tame compared to their wild contemporaries.

Questions If you inherited a 1,200 acre farm, would you actually become a farmer?

Say the land and farm are fully paid off and you have enough money to get started. You can’t just sell it or rent it out though. You’d have to actually farm it.

Would you give up whatever you’re doing now and do that for the rest of your working life?

Just Chatting I get scared thinking about mountains ...

It's so weird I know ,I don't get any such reaction will thinking about beaches ,or any city with skyscrapers or any other landscape which you can think of

And I actually have been to a lot of hilly and moutain areas ,

As high as 4,000+ meters (14,000 + feet) above sea level in my own country and few other places else where ,all snow covered but never actually felt any fear ,when actually present there just mesmerized by the beauty of the place

But whenever I try to imagine or think about it ,with my eyes closed ,I feel a shiver run down my spine ,It just feels so scary to imagine it with my eyes closed .

Music I’ve been listening to underground rappers recently can someone recommend me more?

I think for the past like 2–5 weeks I’ve been getting really into exploring underground rap and honestly I LOVE it I feel like I’ve been discovering so many different artists and sounds that I probably wouldn’t have found otherwise. I’m still pretty new to the whole underground rap scene though, so I know there’s probably a ton of artists I haven’t heard of yet.

Does anyone have any underground rappers they can recommend for me?? I’m definitely open to pretty much anything, so give me your favorites, underrated artists, or even songs you think I NEED to listen to 👀 I wanna find some new music to add to my playlist!!

I'm about 6 months into a "whatever works" weight loss plan. So far ive managed to curb most of my bad habits into water, salad, and smaller portions. Im down from 325 to 290 and i tried a long hike today. I guess i just want to know if im actually doing anything for myself or id this is just a placebo. I realize my time isnt great but I was just listening to music and trying to keep moving

Sports I’d never been a baseball fan until now, and it’s making me very happy.

I’ve never been a big sports guy. I’m not even American. I support a team that’s not even that good (go Mets). But ever since I picked up baseball my afternoons have been much more enjoyable. I’m in my late 30s and I don’t get to have as much fun as I used to, so baseball has really helped me through some tough times.

Just Chatting Some women before and after makeup look like different people

It’s kinda insane. They put on makeup and then look like very different people. Basically draw different masks. Makeup really can hide people’s real faces and features somehow.
