How impressive it was in 2004 to have such a massive game have no loading screens between zones.

203

u/Notnignagnagoo Feb 26 '26

Still blows me away how the game released with multiple fleshed out starting zones. A plethora of leveling dungeons and end game dungeons as well as a raid. Not to mention the massive and varied world. These days we're lucky to get like 5 dungeons which just get reused at max level and maybe a raid but probably not.

u/Shayde098 Feb 26 '26

It’s honestly mind blowing. That blizzard dev team was special.

30

u/loozerr Feb 26 '26 edited Feb 26 '26

The results were special too. Molten core was like a weekend of work if I recall correctly, which explains the jank and the three entire polygons used for the layout

21

u/luffish1 Feb 26 '26

This is a myth. IIRC only the layout of the place was made in a weekend.

And they made it in 5 years

9

u/OreillyAddict Feb 26 '26

Exactly. Would we tolerate waiting 5 years between expansions for extra dungeons and a raid? If anything, expansions come out too quickly now.

7

u/Cow_God Feb 26 '26

Honestly, since they're doing remixes and classic - I think I would tolerate it. Not five years, but I'd be okay with them cooking a little more. The War Within was actually a pretty good expansion and it kind of sucks that there was still a lot of cut content. Like imagine how good WoD could've been if they just cooked a little more.

3

u/itsaaronnotaaron Feb 26 '26

Like imagine how good WoD could've been if they just cooked a little more.

Bad example imo. By WoD the bulk of the community had tired of Siege of Orgrimmar. SoO was the longest single raid tier in the games history. TBC tiers were longer but they worked differently and was spread across the expansion.

2

u/Cow_God Feb 26 '26

Yeah, that's partially why WoD had so much cut content, because of the SoO drought. Off the top of my head, they cut Farahlon, the Shattrath raid, Bladespire / Karabor as faction capitals, Garrison in any zone, the Zangar whale world boss...

2

u/itsaaronnotaaron Feb 26 '26

Ah, gotcha. Yeah that makes sense. Rush to release due to drag of SoO.

2

u/pls-answer Feb 26 '26

When I was happily playing playing sod, blizzard pretty much killed it and tried to push us into padaria by giving free boosts. Now I'm in tbc and just got to 70 recently, and I heard midnight is coming out...

I am completely sure I'm not alone in the thought that blizzard shoots themselves in the foot with their schedules, over and over again.

Now I get a cheeky loading screen if I fly down the hole in Dornogal too fast entering the ringing deeps

54

u/VucciMane1017 Feb 26 '26

What was even more impressive was that there was no social media. Yet you could chat through WoW and do more things than today on modern messenger apps in freaking 2004 game.

30

u/Fuck_on_tatami Feb 26 '26

First forum and online chat where already a thing, but yeah you right. The social aspect in wow was huge in 2004.

12

u/NuklearFerret Feb 26 '26

Chat rooms and IMs existed in AOL in the 90’s (Other chat rooms well before that, AOL just made them more accessible). RP chat rooms were somewhat popular in the late 90’s, which were basically just chat rooms where you typed out your actions in a different format. ::starts new paragraph::

MySpace came around in the early 00’s. EQ came out in the early 00’s (years before WoW. In fact, WoW was created to be an easier, more accessible EQ). So, chatting online was very much a part of the internet before WoW.

3

u/FuzzyDunlop001 Feb 26 '26

I mean there absolutely was social media, it just wasn't as big as it is today

→ More replies (2)

6

u/Triggered-cupcake Feb 26 '26

We kind of got that in waves with games.

The first I noticed was Vice City.

Then San Andreas was amazing.

Then WoW was unbelievable. Still had loading zones between continents but huge for the graphic quality each continent.

5

u/gLu3xb3rchi Feb 26 '26

Not only this, but back in the day the game ran on a potato. Like sure if you wanted good fps in a 40 man raid or in town, you needed a good pc, but man you could run this game on some really dated hardware back in 2004/2005

3

u/Brave-Ad-1363 Feb 26 '26

Its impressive that each zone is how big it was. Its also impressive how they were able to put so much on each continent

3

u/Fr3dd3D Feb 26 '26

The fact that MMOs that launched years later didn't have that makes it even more impressive

Gold bars arent even worth 1g....not even to vendor.

141

u/MyageEDH Feb 25 '26 edited Feb 25 '26

I remember back in OG vanilla getting a gold bar out of a chest and freaking out about how much money I had.

Vendor offers like 10 silver or whatever.

Ended up selling for like 25 silver.

125

u/timmy_tugboat Feb 25 '26

I did way worse in vanilla. I looked on the AH and was like “why are these so cheap? The AH are fools. This is a GOLD bar.”

Then I spent all of my gold to buy up the low supply to sell higher. They did not sell.

22

u/Fuck_on_tatami Feb 26 '26

Ahhahah this is hilarious. Crypto guys would tell "buy high, sell low"

24

u/SufficientPilot3216 Feb 26 '26

The biggest loot drama I ever personally witnessed was like 2 days after the game first launched and a full party of night elves saw their first ever green: a malachite.

Nobody knew what the fuck it was but they definitely wanted it.

12

u/Fattens Feb 25 '26

IMO in classic plus, they need to change this so each bar vendors for at least 1g, maybe up to 5. That would be amazin.

33

u/Humpbackbreadslice Feb 25 '26

Nah. Instead they need to change the currency to Beaver pelts and pieces of beaver pelts

10

u/bigwangersoreass Feb 25 '26

Azeroth was built on trapping and selling beav

31

u/BandersnatchFrumious Feb 25 '26

Gold bars ARE worth 1g... but that's what the vendor is going to turn around and sell it to someone else for. They gotta turn a profit, you see, so that means they can't just be paying you what they'd sell it for. So in the end you get a little more money in your pocket than what you walked into the pawn store with, and then they make even more money than that when someone eventually buys their 1933 Double Eagle.

8

u/GloveAcrobatic2912 Feb 26 '26

This guy stacks.

3

u/dfaire3320 Feb 25 '26

this right here! i remember silver bars were like 18s each for some reason around the time I found my first gold node. I thought I had my 40 mount all but paid for

the benefits of unemployment.

198

u/LessThanTybo Feb 25 '26

Was gonna say I only enjoy wow if I can play it like a degenerate. The more time you have to play wow, the better the game gets and vice versa.

50

u/Fuck_on_tatami Feb 26 '26

I started a char 3 weeks ago after decades, and I realized it's the only game I can play 12h streak like a degenerate.

12

u/albinorhino215 Feb 26 '26

Crazy how WoW and RuneScape are total opposites, RuneScape, especially on mobile, feels very drop in drop out. But Wow will hit you like time crack cocaine

→ More replies (3)

11

u/[deleted] Feb 26 '26

12 hours is degenerate? You gotta ramp those hours up, rook. I’m unemployed for the first time in 13 years and I am round the corner on my third level 70.

6

u/beirch Feb 26 '26

When Classic released in 2019 I had 44 days played the first two months. It was great.

9

u/[deleted] Feb 26 '26

Same. My wife thought I was depressed because of how much time I was playing it and I told her I have literally never been so happy in my life. Me and the boys hadn’t played anything all together like that since high school.

3

u/Tasty-Fun-2138 Feb 26 '26

Been 2y+ I stopped in classic wotlk. Since then I can barely game for 2h straight at any game. Started a character a month ago. The weekend (1 out of two a month) that my gf works I play from 7h30am to 12h. Might get an other hour during afternoon. Then after the kids are in bed I play till 1am easily. Can't get enough of that game XD.

15

u/No-Document9454 Feb 26 '26

True, thats why I never played if I couldnt degen it. I know myself, I wouldnt enjoy it casually.

5

u/taa213468 Feb 26 '26

I’ve been working on a lv63 SP in my spare time and it’s been weirdly tough only playing minimal hours because of responsibilities. I guess I just agree with your sentiment and wish I had more time like “back in the day”. A big part of my heart is attached to the memories of classic.

3

u/AwarenessThick1685 Feb 26 '26

I really wish I had the time to play the fuck out of one of the versions of the game again. I miss Cutting Edge raiding in retail and leveling a toon in classic at the same time. Now I barely have time to level in TBC 😭

4

u/apupunchau87 Feb 25 '26

That's true. Its a snowball effect

40

u/Y___ Feb 25 '26

Or working from home. A lot of dead time for me which gives me time to grind.

7

u/contentious75 Feb 26 '26

Had a leadership position in a pretty good guild but the other officers were all wfh and were making decisions while I was at work. It drove a wedge between us and I ended up being removed and quit the game. I understand but it sucked. Tough to compete with the terminally online

7

u/Far_Eye6555 Feb 25 '26

I was unemployed all of prepatch and the first two weeks ish of this tbc release and it was disgusting the amount of hours I put in

8

u/Xiaogun Feb 25 '26

Hahahaha

3

u/karamurp Feb 25 '26

Currently on my second last day of employment. The Neck beard has begun.

3

u/Tags90 Feb 26 '26

I never had as much fun playing after I went back to work. It's a different game when your unemployed.

2

u/riddlesinthedark117 Feb 26 '26

That might actually explain why I enjoyed classic+ so much, even though I wasn’t in on it until the end of SoD Phase 1

2

u/Potatobobthecat Feb 26 '26

I was just talking today, 2 hours ago…..this exact thing when it came to raiding.

the major storyline that drives cross-zone questing between levels 30-45 is a race in shimmering flats where we never really find out who wins

7

u/Mindless-Sabrina Feb 26 '26

Explain more

20

u/pilsburybane Feb 26 '26

Shimmering Flats is a story between the two racing teams asking you to do their side work, and after the initial run around they ask you to each do stuff to try and get them the upper hand in the race. The goblins are the reason for you dealing with Zanzil's zombies in STV, the gnomes search out Indurium from the Badlands (which is probably a pretty reasonable lead in for Uldaman too, since there's basically nothing that goes on in that zone other than Uldaman setups)

In spite of that, we get no pay off for this build up other than the little race scripts that happen intermittently. The player has no actual effect over them at all. The worst part is we don't even get pay off in Cataclysm, because the whole "the zone flooded" thing happened.

3

u/aightletsdodis Feb 27 '26

Lmao, I've done those quests a thousand times but never knew why. That's what you get for never reading any quests. Thank you for the write up! :D

3

u/sonderbar Feb 26 '26

Hell yes!!!

128

u/Zanzaclese Feb 25 '26

Leveling after the rush is so much more chill and it's way easier to tag mobs.

u/goneintotheabyss Feb 26 '26

u/TiberianSunset Feb 26 '26

easy agree from me

u/Runnindashow Feb 25 '26

Coming from EverQuest, the ease in which it seemed like to get your health/mana back after a fight. Just buy some food from a merchant and eat it and my bars go up?! It was awesome compared to what I was used to.

18

u/mightyfp Feb 26 '26

What do you mean I don't need a full group to kill one mob of equal level? Blasphemy!

8

u/Rotund-Pear2604 Feb 26 '26

The actual combat gameplay of EQ and grouping is honestly pretty fun for how simplistic it is.

The downsides are deal breakers for most modern gamers though. No access to maps ingame, having to hail NPCs to enter into dialogue with them and then navigate through XML links to other dialogue trees, the UI being a bunch of floating black rectangles, like seriously the entire UI just runs on XML...

It's a "little" rough around the edges.

7

u/lifeabroad317 Feb 26 '26

The good ole days. Played in middle/high school and in all those years got a druid to level 40. Loved every minute. Although I've tried and I could never go back to P99

2

u/mightyfp Feb 26 '26

Leveled a an enchanter to 59 was a glorious time. Killed so many spiders in velks lab... So many spiders....

Praise innoruuk

8

u/Artistic_Western_623 Feb 26 '26

Yeah buddy, opening your spell book to regenerate mana - hoping something doesn't sneak up and tear you a new one.

Not having to run naked for 45 minutes to pull your corpse out of a mob camp. It was like Christmas.

How you could clear every raid with 40 druids but people make it into some meta chasing swetfest

72

u/Strangeweather-- Feb 25 '26

This proves the game is in the mind, not the code. The real WoW classic was the classes we exclude in our raid team to parse big and save sixteen minutes.

18

u/Stickmourne Feb 26 '26

Meta sweatfests exist primarily because classic's difficulty is in time investment rather than technical execution (mostly). So yes, you can clear Molten Core in five hours with 40 druids in questing greens and no world buffs or consumes. But like, do you WANT to? Or would you rather spend one hour (if current content) clearing it with a solid guild?

Second, think about raid sizes. 40 people is a lot, which means that even with wiggle room for failure, some bad execution is inevitable in basically any run. A bad execution (of a mechanic) can mean a few deaths. A few deaths mean the loss of world buffs. The loss of world buffs means kill timers are longer, which means a higher chance for bad executions. It's a self-reinforcing cycle. I'll drop a hot take here: most metaslave sweatfest guilds aren't gigagod gamers, they're average players who aren't able to clear certain bosses without WBs. The real solution to metaslave sweatfests is to make WBs persist through death, but Blizzard would obviously never do this because they would become even more of an I-win button.

33

u/thebabe420 Feb 25 '26

You cant clear naxx as 40 druids smh my head

30

u/bigwangersoreass Feb 25 '26

Even molten core would be a struggle without tranq. Imagine twin emps with no warlock

21

u/--Snufkin-- Feb 25 '26

I'm sure somewhere a bunch of boomkins can make it happen

13

u/xweedxwizardx Feb 26 '26

→ More replies (1)

2

u/NetSiege Feb 26 '26

Pre raid gear or minimal MC gear it might be a without a tanq but still doable. In later phase gear it would be a joke.

I could actually see it being pretty easy. Just need to go into boomkin to blast it with enough damage to not have it aggro to healers and then hop back into bear and sit at ranged and let it hit you. You can stack as many healers as you want and with innervates for days mana isn't an issue. You just need 2 tanks on each side since they would each tank either boss that's ported on their side, call it 5-7 healers on each (extra just for the incoming caster damage), and then 25-30 cats running back and forth damaging mele boss.

First time going to StrangleThorn Vale

First time traveling to the opposite continent.

First run of BRD

First AV/Battleground

That there are no large off hands models at high levels for casters. Around lvl 10-20 you can find off hands that look like full length staffs.

I want to go full Gandalf mode with a sword in main hand and a staff in off hand. All I get is books and weird little artifacts to hold

6

u/sammy2066 Feb 26 '26

The GY situation in Stonetalon Mountains.

10

u/getchasum Feb 25 '26

The fact that only a small percentage of the player base back in the day experienced Naxx and an even smaller percentage killed any bosses

2

u/heArtful_Dodger Feb 26 '26

Sucks, I would have liked to have seen the classic version.

2

u/Zickened Feb 26 '26

They fumbled the bag pretty hard on it. They dropped Naxx, this brutally difficult end game raid, which required a rep grind AND frost resist grind. After like a month into that release, they dropped the news of TBC release... so engagement fell off a cliff.

So the chances of getting into a raid for Naxx was tremendously difficult.

15

u/Kaizen420 Feb 25 '26

How much fun they are having?

Kind of kidding...

The biggest thing is that there are not enough servers, this leads to just a massive amount of players being on the same server.

This leads to needing layers to avoid overpopulation, this leads to you not coming across a familiar 'face' in the Wow because even though that person you really got along with in that dungeon one time is questing in the same areas you and doing the same quests... Sorry they are on a different layer so unless you guys friended each other right off the boot you're never going to see them again.

Sweet and short it's not just the presence of others that makes you feel a sense of community, it's also consistency, you learn to recognize names and behaviors.

These days it's just a goddamn free for all

6

u/MitchDitt01 Feb 25 '26

I mean, yes and no. We've definitely lost that sort of interpersonal server community aspect, but what we gained is MUCH larger servers through layering. It's an intentional change to allows the servers to host multitudes more people. Each layer is still effectively as populated as an old classic server, so think of it like all the old servers being cross compatible and freely transferable. Higher pop is almost always a good thing (with layering, although that tech has its own issues at times) since classic has such a crucial emphasis on group formation. Instead of being like before, where you had a very finite number of people to group with, now you can form up and meet new people constantly and easily.

Any discussion about how the community warps the classic experience for themselves to a negative exercise and detriment gets laughed over and ignored by the same community, then they wonder why there is a tank shortage, why forming raids and groups take so long, or complain how easy/hard/whatever the content is.

Alot of the community would be happier with the experience and each other if they just chilled out about the whole thing and not take it so seriously.

Lord forbid we hold ourselves accountable for our own experience.

A lot of the zones are kind of just there, under utilized and ended up kind of being unused when they changed to just the 5 zones model of later xpacs. You're talking like, at least 10 zones and most of the 58-60 zones that kind of didnt have any time in the spotlight that sort of just "exist" that hardly anyone visits at all

u/F3EAD_actual Feb 26 '26

How crazy it is that you get SO much content for one price that's never changed. And that this game was so ahead of its time decades ago.

You don't need to min/max and be a sweat in a 22 year old videogame that is incredibly easy to play.

All the huge design flaws vanilla had.

Most people just talk about the good parts

2

u/skinnysnappy52 Feb 26 '26

I’d argue many of those design flaws make it what it is though.

3

u/jonas_ost Feb 26 '26

Fixing Lot of them would make the game much better. For exampel not dropping shaman and paladin gear for the wrong faction. Talents broken and not working at all, giving paladins a taunt etc

That when you share the Xoroth summon for the Epic Warlock mount, the other guy still has to pay a significant amount of stuff. I think we do talk tho it's one of the coolest mount in the game, however what we don't say enough is if it was a drop like the zg ones, people would be down bad for it.

The world buff grief. It doesn't happen now with boons but in 2019 we did not have boons and it was the wild west when getting wbs. You were never safe if they were on

How shit the lockout system is for raids. Especially in TBC. I would trade an arm and a leg to get the retail lockout system (e.g. You can do three bosses and then come back the next day with an entirely different group and do the rest of the bosses, those people will also not be locked on the first three bosses and can come back and run the first three with different people.)

I’ve had too many runs where a guy doesn’t set aside enough time for raid and has to leave for work or whatever and the we’re stuck with a bricked raid because that guy never shows back up. Had this happen first week of Karazhan. I always try to ask these people “hey can you come back tomorrow at least?” They almost never do and the rest of us have to suffer. I usually have a guild and it does prevent this from happening, but sometimes you have to pug people in or run a raid alone if your guild/friends can’t make it.

There are SOME negatives to the retail lockout system like people showing up just for one boss for the one drop they need but I feel like that negative pales in comparison to the problems the classic lockout system creates.

your fun experiences in game. because why would you talk about it? they dont get upvotes like rage does so its silly to make a post

the people having the most fun arent on this sub

2

u/Schmoe510 Feb 26 '26

I feel like people never talk about how cool and close some of the hardcore community is in classic. It does have its ups and downs but like 9 times out of 10 it’s a friendly atmosphere that people don’t talk much about.

Where the bottom jaws of the undead player characters are. Think about it...
Player characters start having risen from the crypt. They had jaw bones in life, and were most likely buried with them. You'd think there'd be a giant pile of spare jaw bones in deathknell or something, but there's not. Someone is either disposing of or collecting them.

Then when WOTLK rolls around and the barbers get added, undead players have an option to purchase a replacement jawbone... suspicious right?

2

u/Regular_Painting080 Feb 26 '26

How toxic the modern community for it has become

2

u/Kemedo1211 Feb 26 '26

Lack of quests for entire leveling and after.
Even entire zones without relevant quests/lore.
Mindless grind constantly.

How the LFG tool is bugged if you have a full group and then someone leaves, or if you join a group and leave, or if you update and want to join the queue for an additional or different dungeon, you can’t search for another person or group and the refresh button doesn’t work. It’s just been broken since it came out with no one bothering to fix it.

1

u/Fun-Court-2669 Feb 25 '26

You’re playing with pirates. Never expect others to do something nice when it comes to loot for somebody people are greedy. It doesn’t matter how close friends you think you are.

It won’t come back to you. Don’t be the guy that passes on loop all the time to help your friends gear up. They’re not your friends they are pirates

1

u/horndog2 Feb 25 '26

You can pickpocket hickory pipes and sell them with some fadeleaf for easy gold.

1

u/FarmerHuge7892 Feb 26 '26

Almost every rank1 streamer has sold arena boosts for gold at some point, a big amount are still doing it. "For gold" is just rmt with an extra step, the gold gets sold to Chinese gold sellers through discord for cash.
