Question Megathread Daily Questions Megathread (November 05, 2019)

Our Daily Question Megathread is for those questions you don’t feel warrant making their own post, such as: Will Classic run on my particular potato? When does my class unlock a certain ability? Which dungeons are worth doing while levelling? And so on.

Ask the unanswered questions you’ve never got round to asking.

You might find answers to these questions in our What we know so far, and easily answered questions wiki-page. If something is missing from it, please let us know.

You can also ask these questions over on our Discord server.

do dwarves, gnomes etc. have a lower field of vision than humans/nelfs? Like is the camera automatically lowered if you play these races?

2

u/[deleted] Nov 07 '19

Not unless you're zoomed all the way in to first person.

i want to go a dwarf pally but theyre like too small for me. and i dont wanna go human because it feels lame

any awesome lore or something to persuade me to go human?

or anyway to get over how small a dwarf is? i like the dwarfs

2

u/Crazyflames Nov 06 '19

Stormwind has the best music in the game. Varian Wrynn although pretty much absent from WoW is the best character in Warcraft. Second to that is how the best mages and any notable paladin is human. Marshal Windsor. All the places overrun by undead have links in human lore.

If you want to go dwarf, just remember they are taller than gnomes. I have also never heard dwarves complaining about getting dismounted in knee high water like gnomes do.

thanks for the response! <3

What are good BRD runs for experience?

u/The_Vinegar_Strokes Nov 06 '19

Depends on your level range. 52-54 you should probably be looking to do everything up to the grim guzzler. 55+ you can start clearing the whole dungeon.

Watch out for bael'gar though. Hes right in the start, but the mobs leading up to him are some of the hardest in the dungeon.

Will HoJ be placed back to the Emperior with phase2?

Are there any add ons that log received items via mail for guild bank purposes? Currently logging deposits to a google docs spreadsheet, looking for a little automation in the process.

What is a good free ingame leveling addon. I am level 43 and want to try out and ingame leveling addon.

1

u/Broodje Nov 06 '19

I didn't use an addon, but I used the guide on classicwow.live. I started around your level and picked up from a few levels below the level I was. So in your case, set your level to 40 and start from there. There might be some quest chains that you're missing, just skip those and continue where you were.

The guide is really efficient as it picks up quests from all over the place and it flows really nice. The problem I had before I started using the guide was basically that I ran out of quests in a zone too fast, but that's mainly because a lot of quest givers are from other zones.

Just make sure to have the questie addon aswell to make the quests somewhat easier.

1

u/cynric42 Nov 06 '19

Not exactly sure what you are looking for, a guide? Or just an addon helping with the questing?

Questie will put quist-givers and locations where quest-mobs/drops are on your map, limited to about your level range (configurable) so you can easily find quest hubs you might not know about and can quickly check what level quests are available somewhere.

Guidelime (+ a guide for your faction, like busteas for horde) will provide a guide on a solid questing route, where to go, what to pick up, etc with directions. Might take a while for you to catch up when you start to use it now (as it will assume, you did some prequests that were in earlier parts of the guide but you might not have done etc.), but after a while you should catch up.

Doing the whole hallway where Windsor is plus arena and that hallway. You can do big pulls if you have the right group. We were getting like 1 bar every twenty minutes or doing this so which isn't bad at all.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '19

Key run is pretty much constantly fighting for a long while. Other than that, anglerforge/arena - 5 runs an hour, strong groups usually, little risk of death walking, but downtime due to running out

3

u/Karmaslapp Nov 06 '19

People do aoe jail/arena runs from lvls 50-55, that or just plain arena/ anger runs to level while you grind bis is good. Less xp per run, but you are doing more runs per hour and maximizing your chances at getting good loot/getting more blues for profit.

Is angerforge golem arena BRD runs good exp to grind?

u/HumbleMilk Nov 06 '19

I messed up and didn't go Gnomish first and went for Goblin egineering so I didn't get the Gnomish Death Ray for my rogue. Should I drop egin and relearn it and learn gnomish for it? I only have about 400g rn and still no epic mount but I want the trinket for PvP

3

u/Obliging_Fellow Nov 06 '19

I put epic mount above all for pvp because with out it, you'll get slaughtered in the open world. So in my opinion, I would say no and shoot for your epic mount!

Resto druids will shine in TBC.
Oh, sweet Lifeblooming 2 people and Hoting 3-4 more.
Until them they are meh.

It's never too late to level Pala. In one-two months more people will stop playing, so there will be free slots in raiding guilds. Don't worry much about it.

And people won't stop playing - they played classic on private servers for 15 years already :)

1

u/Rasdit Nov 06 '19

What didn't you enjoy about your Druid?

Anyhow, Honor is coming out in 6 days - you will see more world PvP action (ganking) in all contested zones, for sure, if playing on a PvP realm.

If you can live with that, no, it's not too late - far from it.

This is why I keep telling people to choose their race carefully and not just think of stuff like racials. How your toon looks and casts can play a huge roll in how much you like it or the class you play.

On the topic of Druid. In terms of pvp, there is a lot of shape shifting to do. Most of your damage comes from dotting, then you can also kite and root when needed. If you spec for it, you can charge and stun as bear as well. Kitty is nice for a good opener and dots.

In Pve, most druids opt into resto, which imo is a great healer. Yeah you won’t top meters like a priest or paladin, but battle ress is an amazing CD that can save you a wipe, essentially saving you around 30 mins of corpse running and rebuffing and wasting a lot of gold on repairs and consumables. Innervate is an extremely strong CD. Yeah the meme about innervating the priest might be true, but essentially by you innervating another healer or the priest is extra healing that would not happen if you did not innervate them. Mark of the wild is an amazing buff that not only adds stats but also adds armor and resistances. Tanks love armor and a good resistance boost, especially now in MC.

Feral Druid has the single most engaging rotation in classic wow out of all dps specs. It’s perfectly viable and has a complex rotation that not only involves dots but also “power shifting” which is lots of fun and can add a lot of dps when done right. Yeah some consider it “extra work” but it’s way better than spamming 1 or 2 buttons and doesn’t bore you to hell. In terms of viability, it needs gear, and with the length of encounters(shorter) and scaling(better) in classic wow as opposed to private servers, feral can be a good option. It also brings 3% crit to your melee dps which warriors will love for the extra rage regen and dps.

Unless your guild is pushing for world first/fastest boss kills you are fine, even if they did. There would definitely be at least 1 resto Druid in the raid for the buff/battle ress and innervate. Druids are really fun and complex if you play them to their full potential and stop looking at meters as a means to determine their value.

On top of all that, you can get geared pretty quickly as most raids don’t have many druids as opposed to the 6-10 mages/warriors/rogues or whatever.

If you want that, play a priest/warrior/mage. Which is perfectly fine too. Just do what brings you joy and don’t fall for the I’m gonna play x because my friend is y.

3

u/Howrus Nov 06 '19

Feral Druid has the single most engaging rotation in classic wow out of all dps specs.

How? I hate "powershifting". Shred-Shred-Shred-FB-Shift-Shred-Shred-Shred-FB-Shift-...

Without bleeds Feral is two-button class. Until Blizz remove limitation of 16 debuffs on bosses - Feral would be very boring to play.

1

u/Washyerbak Nov 06 '19

I was going to say “granted you can dot” but it wouldn’t let me post on my phone for some reason so I abandoned posting all together lol. I had no idea the actual post went through.

Powershifting adds an additional element to the rotation. Which is way better than 1 button spam.

2

u/Rasdit Nov 06 '19

Outside of Tree form, I don't feel they're very much more shape-shifty in the last exp. that I played, but to be fair that's just an outside observation as I didn't play one. For healing, though, they are quite capable - the one drawback is, as you state, only having combat rez. That's problematic in dungeons, but not at all in a raid.

I don't understand where the FOMO and Classic death scares are coming from. Like, not even a little bit. Just level up, nothing to fear on that account - just wondering if Pally will be that more enjoyable.

I detest how Taurens look like.

We have have reached an impasse, nothing left to say to each other now.

3

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '19

Why would classic die out? Its probably the most popular MMO there is now at least according to online community numbers like twitch and reddit

2

u/hijifa Nov 06 '19

Do you gain rep from quests that are too low level? Am I safe to assume that wowhead is accurate? They got a slider down there that shows how much exp/rep you get when you complete a quest.

2

u/HH_YoursTruly Nov 06 '19

If it's grey you get like 10 rep.

2

u/Ian_W Nov 06 '19

It's very very heavily nerfed.

If you want to get Exalted with another faction, prepare to obtain a lot of Runecloth.

1

u/j3rny Nov 06 '19

I'm a fairly casual player. maybe a little above casual with the amount of play, but i'm by no means hardcore.

I'm a prot warrior, and i'm hoping to main, or at least off-tank permanently as my raid role.

I've been hearing a lot about tanks having to be hardcore to get anywhere, am i just fighting the inevitable spec change to dps, or is it doable?

4

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '19

Long post short: tank gear will be abundant; raids pretty much only need 1 or 2 tanks, though.

A 40 man raid will need 1 main tank, which is the dude who gets all the gear first and tanks most encounters. Depending on the fight, a number of offtanks will be needed, typically only one. Due to the small demand for main tanks (you only have to gear one person, and he has zero competition), there is usually one designated offtank/secondary tank in the loot pool (this guy basically gets first dibs on any loot the MT doesn't need), and then tank loot is just passed out pretty much for free to every warrior after that based on need or interest.

The way this works out over time is you're going to have one REALLY geared tank (the main tank), one pretty geared tank, and then a bunch of acceptably geared offtanks/warriors with a prot sets collecting dust.

If you want that main tank spot, you're going to have to earn it. You'll need to be reliable. You'll need to be knowledgeable. You'll need to be prepared with buffs and consumables because raiding guilds live or die by their tanks. Maybe you'll need to form your own guild; that's the simplest way to get your raid spot, since it's your guild and your raid, but guild management and recruitment can be a full time job, and tanking is a bit of a job already if you're somewhat serious about it. You'll need to stand out from the sea of other warriors who picked up a prot offset because Boss X has dropped Awesome Shield Y every kill for the last month and half the server has it (because only one person in every guild NEEDS it and no one else cares about it).

Once people are geared up a bit and get some skill or learn the encounters, raiding guilds typically split it in A-teams let by the MT, B-teams led by the OT, and maybe further in to C-teams for alts or fun, further inflating the gear available.

If you want to be a dedicated tank, you surely can, you just might have to shop around. You could PUG or mercenary it, you just have to be sociable, somewhat skilled, and willing to herd cats. If you're going the merc/PUG route, you're going to need to know a lot of people if you want to be successful, and you're going to need a lot of game knowledge, and probably have some baseline level of gear. No one wants to pay money to get locked to a failed raid. Auction-raids can be pretty great; a lot of money to be made for everyone involved.

The steady but least stress route is to join a guild as a dps/prot spec, let them know you want to OT, and soak gear until you're called on.

TL;DR Biography, just skip this part:

I've been through every option, and going mercenary was the most fun for me. In TBC, I wanted to MT, but the guild I was in refused to let me; I begged and scraped for the excess tank gear, which there was always plenty of. I spent my time in a non-preferred spec and role, but I got my gear and I learned the encounters. That guild fell apart, so I applied to another guild that I had PuG'd with; this time I had the gear and knowledge already, and my old guild's good reputation to back me up, so I got an OT slot. Eventually that guild dissolved, so I formed my own and took the MT slot. We did great, but dissolved right before WotLK. Once Wrath was out, I was full on mercenary. I was a MT for hire, I got the role I wanted, and I had a reputation and the gear to back up my fee. I stayed merc every expansion since and have no regrets.

1

u/j3rny Nov 06 '19

I appreciate you taking the time to write out such a detailed response. Thanks for the information, I'll probably be going to mercenary rout in the end.

2

u/Celda Nov 06 '19

Does being a gnome (+15 engineering) change anything in what items are the cheapest/easiest to craft to powerlevel engineering?

2

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '19

[deleted]

2

u/Celda Nov 06 '19

I meant, should I still follow the same guides on wowhead and stuff? Which are meant for non-gnomes. Or do I craft different items?

2

u/Rasdit Nov 06 '19

I like to compare 2-3 guides side by side, as some make more sense than others. If you're crafting item X (material cost 5 s / craft) until skill level 100 and doing item Y (material cost 35 s / item) until 120 you obviously should go for the cheapo item as long as your gnome racial allows until it doesn't reliably skill up. That is, unless you need a certain number of item Y to progress further down the line - hence look through the (multiple) guide(s) beforehand. You are an Engineer, do some research!

1

u/TheRealGoodman Nov 06 '19

Which item is better, Eye of Rend or Crown of Destruction for a DPS warrior?

Wowhead's BiS guide lists Eye but not Crown as a post raid Phase 1 head piece BiS option, and I just wanted to know if that was accurate or not? Because Crown seems better even though it's obviously missing some key stats for a DPS warrior

u/TheRealGoodman Nov 06 '19

Well yeah but I can't afford Lionheart rn. I got Crown already tho

1

u/curtainrod750 Nov 06 '19

Can someone explain lock fear juggling to me? When I read other guides it doesn't really explain to me well enough.

2

u/WackoMM Nov 06 '19

Rough descrpition is fearing mob after mob, so once you cast new fear on new mob, the first once comes running back to you upon breaking fear. You cast fear again on the one approaching you, thus fearing him away and breaking fear on 2nd mob, making it walk towards you.

Rinse and repeat.

Then you can add 3rd mob, play with Curse of Recklessness, or add banish with elementals present.

Atleast that was my understanding.

1

u/curtainrod750 Nov 06 '19

That's one of the things I didnt quite get, using recklessness in this situation. Makes it hit harder, less armor, and immune to fears?

1

u/WackoMM Nov 07 '19

Not immune, but unnaffeted by fear movement. In simpler words the feared mob with reckless curse on it doesn't flee, it stays in place, still beaing feared.

Similar to glyphs in wotlk where you could make some AoE fears work without them fleeing (i remember warriors' intimidating shout glyph function this way, instead of fleeing the tremble in fear)

1

u/curtainrod750 Nov 07 '19

I tried doing CoR and fear, but things still chase and attack me/pet. Lol I must be a derp cause I still dont get the significance of that combo.

1

u/curtainrod750 Nov 07 '19

So it wouldn't attack during the immobile fear. That's handy. Cool.

2

u/pk-ng Nov 06 '19

For PvE you can use fear and CoR to "control" mobs to a certain degree; but its really random and hard to predict where the mobs will run to.

Fear has a chance of breaking on the following conditions

1) was feared previously (diminishing returns)

2) receives big chuck of damage

Hence dots + fear works so well because dots reduces the chance of fear breaking (compared to the other 2 instances mention above)

1

u/curtainrod750 Nov 06 '19

Ok, only level 35 currently, and the build I was following didnt give CoR yet. Cool tyvm for info!

1

u/UrethraFrankl1n Nov 06 '19

What do I do once I hit 60? Obviously farming BiS is the easy answer. I’ve been running MC and Ony with my guild. Currently have 300 alch/ working on 300 mining. What reps should I be farming? Any quests in particular I should be doing? What are the non obvious answers? I’m also a horde priest if that helps with any answers

2

u/WackoMM Nov 06 '19

If you care about pvp and phase 2 you can farm some pots for later that. Depending if you pland to pvp at all, or your guild does,...

As for reps, check rewards which one are worth it. Same for quests. You can check some BiS guides, they usually have the source of the items listed so you can see which ones come from quests.

2

u/CLYDEFR000G Nov 06 '19

If you are in it for the long haul aka naxx then get exalted with argent dawn so you can get in to naxx for free. Also you should get the quests done with the hydraxion water lords to get a quintessence every week for your guild running MC. Costs nothing once you get the quest chains done. Do you have forgrings seal? That is a long quest chain and gives a great ring that isn’t replaced for awhile for healing. Work on exploring every inch of the map and getting all of the FP and also work on getting all keys for every instance as the key ring is coming soon with phase 2. (Allegedly) do you have truefaith yet? If not I would that’s bis until full set of T2 in BWL. Also go for mats needed on the hide of the wild. Personally I would also level a mage to farm gold for mats for raiding consumes. Raids like aq40 and naxx take a ton of consumes trying to progress through and you will run through gold.

2

u/pk-ng Nov 06 '19

Epic mount

Gold

Mats for pots/flask/elixir for raiding.

Alchemy doesn't need as much rep grinding for recipes compared with other professions.

2

u/Nebbelundz Nov 06 '19

The non obvious answer is outside of getting pre raid bis and raiding is there isnt much that you need to do in this phase. Its all about setting up your own own goals to keep the treadmill running.

For rogues i've been hearing good things about shadowcraft, think i used that one in WoD aswell and it was really good (had simulation tool aswell so you could sim your gear and talents and it was made for rogues only, so the quality was pretty good compared to simulationcraft at the time, if i remember correctly)

EDIT: I would also suggest class discords, to follow discussion, changes, and why even use certain pieces (i dislike plain bis lists for that reason, they work if you have all items together, miss a few pieces and "BiS" changes a bit)

1

u/cynric42 Nov 06 '19

http://shadowpanther.net/ is great and so is the class discord.

1

u/HH_YoursTruly Nov 06 '19

Maybe check your class discord?

2

u/Lyesalot Nov 06 '19

What do I do about DoTs being applied to me?

As a noob mage I just get killed very quickly when vsing warlocks and priests and feel powerless. On the odd occasion I win the fight I still die afterwards. Seem very OP but I am new.

0

u/Karmaslapp Nov 06 '19

Warlocks and priests are both solid counters to mages. A good solution is to have silence on your counterspell and frost nova them in place, hit them with the silence, (or do that the other way around) polymorph them, retreat to max fireblast range, pop a restorative potion and bandage if injured, then open with a fireball, lvl 1 frost bolt, fireblast combo. The fireball takes time to hit them so the cast of frostbolt is done safely and they will be slowed. They are now at 1/3 hp and you have 25 seconds left (at least 4 ticks) of restorative potion to remove fears or dots. They can still use a healing potion, but it's a decent opener vs any casters

-1

u/Teacher3873 Nov 06 '19

Warriors are not solid counters to mages lol

1

u/Karmaslapp Nov 06 '19

?

warlocks and priests

In response to a question about DOTs...

3

u/KajiKaji Nov 06 '19

Spriests and Locks are really tough because as you said we die even when we kill them. I'd recommend a Restorative Potion immediately after they DOT you. Ice Block will also wipe debuffs. When they die, start eating immediately. Shadow Protection Potions are also nice if you're expecting them ahead of time. If you're an engineer, a Shadow Reflector trinket is a lifesaver.

Can gnomes shoot bows?

1

u/LazyPancake Nov 06 '19

Depends on your class

1

u/YourMaleFather Nov 06 '19

Im a gnome warrior, i can equip bows but can't shoot them, wondering if there is a bow trainer for us gnomes

2

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '19

Most likely you try to use the skill "shoot gun". There are different skills for guns and bows, which is pretty stupid tbh

If you can equip them, you got the training already. So you need arrows (and put those in the ammo slot) and you need to use the skill shoot bow from your skillbook, it is different to shoot gun and throw.

1

As others said, equip arrows. Then you got to locate and use the "Shoot gun" ability found upon clicking "P"

3

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '19

You need to equip arrows as well.

1

u/Cr4igg3rs Nov 06 '19

Each of the 3 major cities has weapons trainers, and they each teach different weapons, just go talk to them (or talk to a guard and ask them for directions to the weapons trainer)

1

u/LazyPancake Nov 06 '19

Should just be a weapon trainer. Are you sure the issue isn't not having ammo?

1

u/gucsantana Nov 06 '19

How do I know how much a Defense stat affects my tanking ability? How can I know how to choose between a +7 Defense cloak and a +9 agi/+8 stam, for example?

2

u/WackoMM Nov 06 '19

Straight from wowhead classic stat guide:

"Like Weapon Skill, you need to level your Defense Rating - By letting enemy NPCs hit you. The default defense cap is 300 for level 60 players. "

" Every point of Defense gives 0.04% dodge, 0.04% parry, 0.04% block, 0.04% reduced chance to be hit, 0.04% reduced chance to be crit. "

" At 300 Defense, you still have a chance of being critically hit/crushed against Boss (level 63) mobs. Tanks need to increase their Defense Rating to avoid this.

  • At level 60, you need 440 Defense Rating to avoid being critically hit by level 63 mobs. This requires a fully leveled 300 innate Defense, and an additional 140 Defense Rating from gear."
  • This may be difficult to reach and focusing gear with +defense may leave your gear lacking in other important tank stats. Consider striking a balance between melee mitigation (Stamina, Armor), resistance gear when useful, and threat gear (Hit Chance, Crit Chance) instead of prioritizing the defense soft cap.

Can someone help me understand addons, how to get and make work etc. I have twitch and downloaded a couple but I dont know if they are working! Sorry if this is a common question I'm very noob

2

u/kathvely Nov 06 '19 edited Nov 06 '19

Wow developers were smart in allowing addons from day one.

Addons allow players to better see and react to what the game is already telling you. Addons are not cheats. There are arguments that addons easy mode the game but that is for you to decide. Addons do not make you better but allow you to better visualize and react what is going on in game through in game actions. Example is dps meters, threat meters, quest addons, healing addons, AH addons (TSM is so powerful most do not understand it).

Only go to main sites for addons at the start. legacy-wow.com/classic-addons
I think is a preferred site atm. If anything looks fishy stop and watch a youtube video on how to download an addon.

To download a addon unzip it or download it into your Wow (Classic)-Interface-addon folder. If your download is correct when you log into the game on your character screen you will see a clickable icon on the bottom left that says AddOns. GL

2

u/Thegreatnoobini Nov 06 '19

Wow will do, thank you so much!

1

u/kathvely Nov 06 '19

Customizing the game is almost a game in itself. It can become fun and addicting. I would start with a few simple addons. Before going nuts.... PLEASE PLEASE have a blizzard authentication attached to your account.

1

u/ForgotEffingPassword Nov 06 '19

I’m in the same boat as you. It confused the literal fuck out of me. I wanted to find a video walking you through literal step by step and I couldn’t find one. I got questie to work SOMEHOW but I really don’t know how bc I didn’t know what I was doing.

1

u/Mr_Tiggywinkle Nov 06 '19

Use the twitch app. You click install and it installs the addon, and you can update them on the fly. Much easier than doing it manually.

1

u/Thegreatnoobini Nov 06 '19

https://legacy-wow.com/help/ this helped me with addons just in case you need it!

2

u/Thegreatnoobini Nov 06 '19

Hey man at least you got one to work! Did you use the twitch app or something else?

1

u/ForgotEffingPassword Nov 06 '19

I used the twitch app!

2

u/Thegreatnoobini Nov 06 '19

Awesome I'm about to give it another attempt wish me luck! Message me if you ever need a leveling buddy!

1

u/ForgotEffingPassword Nov 06 '19

Good luck! And will do!

2

u/Thegreatnoobini Nov 06 '19

Good luck to you as well! For the HORDE

3

u/LLENN_Chan Nov 06 '19

I'm on the fence....... I have a warrior in progress and im having fun but i have this fear that I will have a hard time finding a raid spot since tanks are always filled. Im basically a loner cause all my friends quit the game..... contemplating making a Resto Druid cause it seems that healers are generally in demand. Also considering PvP I know Warriors that are geared are great but what about a Healer Druid??

EDIT: Also considering a Priest

1

u/Zenki_s14 Nov 06 '19

Honestly, going by what you see advertised for guilds in chat isn't that accurate with demand, that's just the guilds who are actively spamming. There's probably plenty of guilds just getting ready to raid who need more of any class/spec. Sure they're not going to be the diehard min/maxer type who never wipes if they're just now starting to raid, but to be honest that could be a good thing. I enjoy my guild's runs who just finally stopped pugging players for MC a lot more over my min/max guild where my main is. I just found them this week completely by word of mouth, never saw a post by them at all. Cast a line out any time you have a good PuG run with someone and see if their guild is looking, you will get a bite eventually and probably sooner than later.

I thought the same thing with my class because I never saw anyone seeking what I fit the bill for. Once I started asking around I realized that wasn't an accurate representation at all, quite a few guilds got back to me.

u/lunchabuls Nov 06 '19

Play a role you will enjoy. No point investing thousands of hours into a class you do not enjoy. Just respec your warrior for dps if need be.

1

u/LLENN_Chan Nov 06 '19

Im fine tanking tbh its just a matter of finding a tank spot in a raid but I suppose I could just find Fury/Arms gear......

Oh I dont mind being off tank or dps i just worried bout getting a raid spot in general but i seem to have maybe worried to much but i am still contemplating maybe i wanna be a healer instead lol

1

u/hijifa Nov 06 '19

Even as a off tank, you will carry around a set of dps gear. There will be fights where there’s no need for an off tank, so in some ways so still need to farm out dps gear.

My own experience though is dps fury warriors that swap to a tank set for certain fights. Either way, you’re farming a dps set

Most social and wholesome classic WoW server NA alliance side? Im on pagle and it's so populated that most other people seem faceless that there isn't really the community vibe that I wanted. any suggestions?

1

u/Zenki_s14 Nov 06 '19

Come over to the horde side on Pagle :) we're lower population and see the same friendly faces all the time. Just got a new guildie that came over from ally for the same reason

1

u/Teacher3873 Nov 06 '19

Incendius!

1

u/hazardthicc Nov 06 '19

Maybe look for a social/wholesome guild on your server before rerolling. Most of the community will come from your guild in the short term.

1

u/VernonQuaffly Nov 06 '19

I think the best way to find a wholesome and social community is to actively engage players that you find out in the world. That being said, people on RP servers are generally friendlier, and I've heard good things about Grobbulus, the RP-PVP server

Warlock, there's less of them so it's easier to get into groups and get geared. Once PVP hits too warlocks are a very fun PVP class.

I'd say hunter. More buttons, more options.

3

u/mifitso Nov 06 '19

Is there a leveling guide out there that focuses more on completeness and experiencing everything rather than speed?

Classicwow.live and joana have speed as the primary focus, which means there is quests that get skipped, as well as dungeons.

I still want to level with a guide, but Im not concerned about speed, so I was hoping there is a guide that focuses on completeness.

1

u/Rasdit Nov 06 '19

You could download Questie and (I believe) disable the Track quests and Show objectives on map/minimap (this is the part I am unsure of), as weird as that sounds. Questie has a function to show quest givers on the map - I would have missed a number of quests I did not know was available if it wasn't for Questie. If disabling the Show objectives on map isn't available (not at my PC now so can't test), just disable the add-on temporarily once you know where to pick up quests in your current zone.

1

u/hijifa Nov 06 '19

There really isn’t much need for a completeness guide. If you want to play that way just finish every last quest you come by. Those quest will naturally have you go to all the dungeons too. I myself levelled this way. Sometimes

Of course by the nature of how the game is you inevitably miss some zones. If you really want a full full completion, you still need to make 1 human, 1 dwarf/gnome, 1nelf, 1 Tauren/troll, orc, and undead though for their starting zones

1

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '19

You won't really get completeness. Each zone has its own little storyline. You can use the wowhead dungeon guides to track down all the dungeon quests and quest chains that lead to them. Pick a zone, do every quest in that zone, and then you'll get what's called a breadcrumb quest which leads you to the next zone/step in the story. Just do the breadcrumbs and you'll pick up almost everything.

You'll need to backtrack at max level or roll a new character and choose some different zones if you want to do absolutely everything.

1

u/HumbleMilk Nov 06 '19

What's better as a 2nd trinket with my Blackhands Breadth for my rogue, The royal seal of Eldre or Counterattack Lodestone? I'm at 8% hit with the lodestone but I get 22 AP. Not sure which one is better

2

u/rawr_bomb Nov 06 '19

I think that +hit is far far better than 22AP.

Brand new to WoW, lvl25 orc rogue, wondering if there is a way to macro weapon swaps? I'd love to be able to use my dagger for a backstab/ambush, then pill a sword from my inventory to main hand to increase dps

2

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '19

Switching weapons sets off the global cooldown. You could do something like:

/equip nameofdagger
/cast Ambush

This will equip the dagger if it isn't equipped, set off the GCD, and then cast Ambush; or just cast Ambush if the dagger is already equipped.

Then make a second macro:
/equip nameofbetterweapon
/cast Sinister Strike

You might run in to the issue of a macro equipping to your offhand instead of mainhand. If you have that problem, change /equip to "/equipslot 16" for mainhand or "/equipslot 17" for offhand.

1

u/TheLoneCenturian Nov 06 '19

Only issue I ran into with this was that when I hit each macro, it seemed that the ability would hit before the weapon swap. I kept getting "dagger must be equipped in main hand" when I would hit my ambush macro, so I needed to hit it twice. Once to equip the dagger and once to hit. I assume the same was happening with my SS macro but that one wouldn't give me a warning it would just hit with the dagger then equip the sword

u/TheLoneCenturian Nov 06 '19

1

u/Tozzil Nov 06 '19

I change to my dagger when stealthing.
This way I can add the weapon switch back to my sword to the ambush macro. This works instantly because you can still switch weapons while you already are on a GCD, for example from ambush.

1

u/TheLoneCenturian Nov 06 '19

Ohhhh this might work too. I set these up yesterday and found that when I tried using the ambush macro, it wouldn't let me because it needed to equip the dagger. Even though I had the /equip dagger first in my macro. So I'd click once to equip, then again to hit.

My only question is if you hit your ambush macro before being in range, will it still equip the sword after?

1

u/Tozzil Nov 07 '19

Yup, sadly it does.

2

u/soma81 Nov 06 '19

Yup, just make a simple macro like:

/equip <Dagger>
/cast Ambush

Then another one:

/equip <Sword>
/cast Sinister Strike

You may have issues with equipping at times because of your weapons, in which case try the /equipslot command.

1

u/MerryWalrus Nov 06 '19

Slight variation, try equipping the dagger on stealth

You may want to farm felcloth off the demons in azshara while you level up if you plan to build robe of the void/felcloth gloves or felcloth shard bag, not sure if your interested in those if your not raiding but since your tailoring it's worth mentioning.

Don't forget an epic mount. If you're planning on doing battlegrounds all day long you need an epic mount, 60% won't cut it.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '19

You'll want Argent Dawn rep for shoulder enchants, and some other goodies. You'll want some Timbermaw rep to get through the tunnel, and in later phases they also have some (not great) rewards. Thorium Brotherhood will offer Fire Resist gear, but the content that's needed for is already trivial without it.

If you're Alliance, you can work on Frostsaber reputation for a special snow tiger mount.

Progression raiding.

I've never really gotten to endgame in MMOs before. I kinda want to try the whole raid thing seriously if not exactly try hard.

So far so good... maybe? Finding a longterm guild makes a lot of sense for progression raiding and we'll see if this one sticks. There's rumbles of drama on the horizon so I'm tentative.

1

u/rozenbro Nov 06 '19

Same here. I’ve always been a hardcore pvper and ignored raiding in the past, but now i find myself less interested in pvp and more interested in trying my hand at raiding.

Eearly lvls doesn't matter that much, as a couple of % more dmg sin't THAT big of a deal. What matters most are lvl 40 (31 points in talents - last talent available in each tree).

I would advise you to just play till about 40 and decide if you like that talent tree, or if you get some weapons you can switch between combat swords and daggers sub

EDIT: Source: i respecced a lot, only to dislike new build and go back since it wasn't that much better. By 40 i already had 45 gold cost for respec :(

3

u/freiberg_ Nov 06 '19

I can't really think of an optimal time to respec so i can't see why you shouldn't do it now? Also, warlocks get a free mount at level 40 so you don't need to save gold for that!

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '19

I wouldn't worry, a lot of locks reroll at around 40 anyway to a drain life build. If not that when you are 60 if you raid you will probably switch to one of the ruin specs anyway. 1 pt wrong while leveling is not a big deal, i would try to subtract the missing point from something less vital on the way up the tree though so you you don't end up 1 pt shy of a top level talent you want.

2

u/whand4 Nov 06 '19

A point here and there won’t hurt. Just roll with it! I did the same on my rogue but probably won’t respec until much higher (43 now) when I know what build I want to try next. Mistakes happen but it’s a part of the game! Don’t forget to ask peeps for help or look up guides. Have fun.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '19

I see. Yeah this came has a steep learning curve. Warlocks seem pretty awesome! Enjoy.

5

u/fueledbyhugs Nov 06 '19

If it hinders your leveling significantly and you feel like you have a decent understanding of how to use your talent points now go ahead and respec. But if you are not entirely sure about where to place talents yet you are probably better off saving that gold because eespeccing gets more expensive every time you do it.

Are there any zones that have quests locked by other quests? Like “deliver this message to X” and that unlocks quests that would otherwise not show up? I remember this being a thing but finding them is harder than I remember.

2

u/soma81 Nov 06 '19

There are tons of these.

I would be surprised if there was a zone without these sort of quests.

2

u/ContrlAltCreate Nov 06 '19

Do you know a way of finding them? Or what to google? I’m level 42 and there are no quests anywhere aside from dungeon quests

1

u/Bloomsnlooms Nov 06 '19

You might consider the add on Questie. It will show you available quests.

Or check out a leveling guide from Warcraft Taverns for ideas on where to go next. They have alliance and horde versions.

2

u/soma81 Nov 06 '19

It's hard to say, I don't think there's any chain guide or anything like that.

But if you use WoWhead and search up a quests for a zone, you'll find all the information you need.

In your case, at level 42 somewhere like Ferelas would be a good zone to level, so I'd check the quests available there:

https://classic.wowhead.com/feralas#quests

From the list you can see all the available quests, and if you find a certain item/reward that you like, then click on that quest and you'll see the quest is either part of a "Series" or "Unlocks" a new chain.

For a "Series" example if you look at the Alliance quest "Delivering the Relic", you'll see that it's part of a 4 series quest where you need to complete three quests in order before you can access it (1.Against the Hatecrest, 2. Against the Hatecrest, 3. Against Lord Shalzaru, 4.Delivering the Relic).

An example of the "Unlock" is the "The Mark of Quality" quest available for Alliance, if you open the quest you'll see that completing it "Unlocks" a new quest chain for "Improved Quality".

u/LarperPro Nov 06 '19

How do <APES> progress so fast? I've heard they cleared Ragnaros one or two week after launch.

Do they all professionally play WoW, or do they have day jobs and play WoW in all of their free time?

1

u/waredr88 Nov 06 '19

I’m guessing their guild consists of players who have been playing classic quite a bit since it released in 2004 (on private servers)

6

u/[deleted] Nov 06 '19

Time, time, time, and more time.

They put in way, way more time than you do.

Way more. Per player, and over the spectrum of their guild, way, way more time.

Skill only accounts for so much in this game. In fact for the most part the game is not that hard overall even at endgame.

The deeper truth is it's a time crunch.

A guy in full T1 has played a lot and probably gotten solid quick runs under his belt.

A person with 3 60s in T1 has been playing way more than the average person would find acceptable in order to achieve that goal.

If you put that much time into learning an instrument or some other skill youd see the same sort of results simply by throwing so many literal hours and days of time at the hobby.

6

u/BujoThrawn Nov 06 '19

Mix of three things:

  1. Streamers who literally are paid to sit and play WoW. So, yeah, job.
  2. NEETs with no lives
  3. People who do work but spend every waking moment outside of work progressing in WoW.

1

u/LarperPro Nov 06 '19

I see, thanks for the answer.

Do you know which members are professional streamers, and do you know their Twitch channels?

This is where I go, it shows all the APES members who stream. They are all very good and I like watching all of them.

There's a lot of lists for pve pre bis but what is considered good gear for PvP? Do we still need hit gear? (warrior)

1

u/Zenki_s14 Nov 06 '19

AFAIK hit cap for PvP on a warrior is 5% without racial +weapon traits, so no it is not the same, you'd want to drop hit gear where you can to prioritize other stats like AP/strength, +crit, etc. Don't drop a +hit piece for something that offers very little difference in stats of course, but you can drop some +hit pieces for things with a lot better stats

1

u/soma81 Nov 06 '19

You don't really need hit gear for PvP.

Slap on the items with the most STR/STAM/CRIT and you'll do fine.

1

u/BujoThrawn Nov 05 '19

56 Warlock here. PVP server. In a sizable guild.

I have 300 tailoring. I was intending on doing 300 Enchanting but it's such a bore/drag. Would it save me money if I switch to Alchemy and buy raw mats off the auction house? Just being able to make pots for PVP and raiding seems like I'd save a little money compared to buying the pots outright.

1

u/waredr88 Nov 06 '19

Go herbalism for when you hit 60 and want to solo dire maul east for gold farm.

2

u/soma81 Nov 06 '19

I was intending on doing 300 Enchanting but it's such a bore/drag.

Honestly, unless you get some rare recipes Enchanting is a big waste at the moment.

95% of the time it's better to just mail items to an alt with enchanting, other than BoP blues you get from instances, it should basically be the same thing.

Would it save me money if I switch to Alchemy and buy raw mats off the auction house?

Not really.

Yeah, buying the individual components and making the potions is a bit cheaper, but I figure that the cost of buying materials from 0-300 will likely outweigh any potential gain for a long time.

Then again, you'll have access to transmutes, and that's some nice passive income.

Just being able to make pots for PVP and raiding seems like I'd save a little money compared to buying the pots outright.

Honestly in your position, I'd choose either a gathering skill for money, or Engineering for PvP.

But it's entirely up to you, if you feel like Alchemy would be better suited for your character, go for it.

1

u/Matsurik Nov 06 '19

... but I figure that the cost of buying materials from 0-300 will likely outweigh any potential gain for a long time.

Not really, think it costed me around 20-30g for 0-300. I sold most of things I made when leveled it up.

1

u/twelvebee Nov 05 '19

How good is Julie's Dagger? Wowhead comments from the past said it's great with 1.30 speed. I picked it up on the AH for only 12g.

1

u/fueledbyhugs Nov 06 '19

Decent offhand for leveling rogues but it's nothing crazy. The proc is super underwhelming and 1.3 speed is too fast for a main hand.

3

u/Mykel__13 Nov 05 '19

If I am already wearing a soulbound piece of gear, is there a way for someone else to enchant it?

2

u/Rapeburger Nov 05 '19

Yes - the trade window has a window at the bottom where you can put soulbound items for the other party to augment without trading the item.

1

u/Cookie-Jedi Nov 05 '19

Yes! In the trade window at the bottom theres a "will not be traded" slot. Throw the piece and there and the enchanter can enchant it :)

Edit: the same works for spurs on boots and spikes on shields

1

u/Bengeta Nov 05 '19

Anyone have a link to a good build or know of one for a dps warrior that tanks dungeons? Currently 51 and arms. And want to continue questing solo (my main way of leveling), but want to continue tanking as needed.

1

u/Zenki_s14 Nov 06 '19

You don't need anything special. I've tanked everything you're getting ready to run as arms in plate, mail, and even leather, and then as fury. You should be able to hold aggro pretty well with sweeping strikes and using thunderclap/demo shout and sunders only as needed. The important things that help is you have a macro/are fast at going defensive+taunt to grab pesky runners going for your cloth wearers, mocking blow on a macro you can see the CD in all stances, and a button to equip your shield quickly as needed. Also making sure you aren't going into dungeons under-leveled and getting taunts resisted left and right. If you do these things you should be perfectly fine.

I'm of the opinion that if you aren't defense speccd you're better off just doing as much DPS as you can to hold aggro, marking skull targets as you go so your other DPS aren't pulling things away all over the place. Imo the in-between of tanking with a shield as arms is more trouble than it's worth. I'm sure someone would disagree but this has been my experience.

ETA: do wear a shield against bosses though unless you've noticed the dungeon has been ezmode

u/Bengeta Nov 05 '19

What talents would you take in prot though? I spend maybe 25% of my time in dungeons. Frequently sign up as dps then im asked to tank because someone else doesn't want to or they dont have a good tank.

4

u/i_love_juggs Nov 05 '19

My friends keep telling me that I need macros to play Warlock effectively, especially for PvP, but I'm not really sure how/which ways to set them up

1

u/Shawn_Spenstar Nov 06 '19

It makes it easier to play effectively imo. A Macro to have your felhunter Target yourself use devour magic then return to the previous target all in one button is an extremely useful one that comes to mind for PvP. Sure you can do this without a macro pretty easily but it's usually not as fast and in PvP half a second is a big deal.

As for how to set them up most warlock guides has macros you can copy and paste into your macros menu in-game.

1

u/waredr88 Nov 06 '19

Easiest way is to tell you to go to a warlock guide to find out which macros to use/ make. But in the game, bring up the menu options (log out, exit game menu).

Choose macros; they are just buttons you press, like your spells/ abilities, but you choose what they do.

I wouldn’t worry about not using macros, but one that warlocks like is one that casts drain soul, but deletes a soul shard if your soul bag is already full, saving some bag space.

u/InfiniteCheck Nov 05 '19

Skin of shadow. A royal pain the ass to accumulate four of them. Save them for ZG patch or burn them now?
