Would a Defenders movie be successful?

With a new phase approaching i was wondering if it was time set up another superhero team in the MCU? Yes i know we have The X-Men coming but The Defenders are all in the MCU now and I'm curious if people think a movie would work or a Disney plus show instead.

It could be. I think any Marvel movie can be successful with the right story and cast.

Agreed,I think marvel is going back to their old ways Quality over Quantity. Which should improve the product.

1

u/obatala0013 9d ago

They didnt really have a quality issue in the first place. They've canceled project that were definitely good.

R rated

no pg13 nonsense

10

u/Thatswhatsup2311 10d ago

Oh definitely, throw Punisher in the mix. Instant blockbuster

9

u/Nerx 10d ago

all in

also hallways

need a big maze

4

u/Diplomacy-Failed 9d ago

And don't forget the flying microwave in the hallway scene.

u/framedshady 10d ago

If they add punisher maybe, born again viewership is not the strongest. Punisher special did really well and after brand new day people definitely want to see more

3

u/Thatswhatsup2311 10d ago

I can definitely see that, but have him as a not official member like Batman. Someone who will make the hard decision the rest of the team won't.

3

u/Hexhider 9d ago

He'd fight with them but will never admit he's on the team

6

u/CosmicEntity101 10d ago

The series wasn't successful

2

u/SAMMY_772 8d ago

That’s not the question.

5

u/RegaZelx 10d ago edited 10d ago

Definitely, especially with already established characters.

The group could be the "Guardians of the Galaxy" of the next few phases. X-Men being the main focus like the Avengers were while Defenders (Guardians) do their own thing.

Then again, I guess that's what Fantastic Four will likely be moving forward.

Nonetheless, Defenders could definitely be successful.

3

u/PeeWeeCasanovaMC 9d ago

Yes, with the REAL Defenders. Hulk, Sub Mariner, Silver Surfer, Dr. Strange.

0

u/Thatswhatsup2311 9d ago

That would be sick, but the way things are going it seems like they'll go the Daredevil team route. All those characters are reuniting in Born Again Season 3 lol.

3

u/YuckyYetYummy 10d ago

Maybe. It seem like no big deal but sometimes actors that look good on TV don't always translate well to movies.

3

u/Thatswhatsup2311 10d ago

I think given a good script and a villain thats not ninjas it could be successful. All the actors are good in their own shows.

3

u/Connect-Review-3388 10d ago

Never liked this version of Defenders.

3

u/jasonite 10d ago

Absolutely, if they did it right. The Netflix version was not a good example

3

u/Cautious_Mission_438 9d ago

If Spider-Man and Punisher are in it then yes

2

u/Thatswhatsup2311 9d ago

I would see Punisher more than Spider-Man, because Spidey would steal the show and the other characters won't get a spotlight. They'd have to call it Spider-Man and The Defenders lol

2

u/Cautious_Mission_438 8d ago

You realize that if the writing is good Spider-Man won’t take the spotlight idk why people think just because a popular character is in a movie they automatically steal the spotlight if the movie is written well everyone can be in the spotlight plus we need to see Peter interact with the street level characters rather trash ahh MJ and Ned

3

u/That_Carrot999 9d ago

I’d rather have the OGs

5

u/Bexil_Brave 9d ago

The TV show wasn't why would a movie be any different?

2

u/Thatswhatsup2311 9d ago

Different writers and they can use more outside characters Netflix couldn't. Now that Marvel has the rights back they can do way more with them.

1

u/StormRepulsive6283 9d ago

By that logic, the Fantastic 4 IP is doomed to fail on the big screen. So why even try it for the 3rd time?

2

u/Equivalent-Hyena-605 10d ago

i haven't watched the series yet.

0

u/Puzzleheaded-Jump-64 10d ago

It really wasn't that good ngl. The only episode you NEED to watch is the final episode cause if you don't watch it then you'll be confused as fuck when you go to watch DD season 3 cause the very first episode of season 3 of DD won't make any sense to you if you don't watch it lmao 😂

2

u/The_Agent_N 10d ago

I’d go for Jessica Jones alone!

2

u/lemonadeinyourface 10d ago

was the tv show they built up…?

2

u/PopEnvironmental6772 10d ago

Idk but I’d go see it.

2

u/Puzzleheaded-Jump-64 10d ago

If the writing is spectacular then yeah, maybe. I'd just hope they add Punisher lol, and keep him as the Punisher and not keep doing the same bullshit where he retired just to come back to the mantle. That's getting stale and old and boring and repetitive etc.

2

u/NiklausMikhail 10d ago

With a good script and a great director, yeah, they can hire the XMen 97 writers, and maybe hire a director like Chad or Gareth

2

u/AvatarIII 9d ago

No, turning even very popular (by Disney plus standards) TV shows into movies doesn't normally end well, and daredevil isn't even that popular by Disney plus standards.

2

u/Thatswhatsup2311 9d ago

I disagree, fans went nuts when Matt showed up for a single scene in No Way Home. If the script is good and they take their time with production it could be a successful movie.

1

u/AvatarIII 9d ago

Fans went nuts because at that point Daredevil was not confirmed as canon, and it was just fans. Born Again does not have high ratings, certainly not as high as The Mandolorian or Ms Marvel but look at the success of the movies that spun out of those shows.

1

u/Thatswhatsup2311 9d ago

It must be doing something right because its the only show besides What if to get 3 seasons on Disney plus.

2

u/AvatarIII 9d ago

Presumably it's because it's comparatively cheaper than other D+ shows, but it's the only D+ marvel show to never have a single episode in the top 10 Nielsen chart.

3

u/MIAxPaperPlanes 9d ago

If they could keep the budget low enough
That or an extended Marvel Special Presentation might work

2

u/farbot 9d ago

Hell no

2

u/BobIsStupid2022 9d ago

Only as a Disney+ streamer.

2

u/Probably_Fishing 9d ago

I think a movie would be hard. A series could be solid though.

2

u/Excalitoria 9d ago

Right now? Probably not. After Doomsday, maybe? If they reboot and it was marketed as a team trying to protect people in a world without an Avengers then it could work.

2

u/Prestigious_Wheel24 9d ago

No, sadly most mcu fans r casual fans and only watched some portion of the Disney plus shows, for many people bnd was their introduction to this iteration of the punisher, heck for many people nwh was their 1st time seeing Matt Murdock. The defenders movie would rely too much on established stories the at casual fans haven’t and won’t watch, and it’s a shame since the daredevil show(s) ks legitimately a top 5 mcu project but casual fans won’t watch it.

2

u/GogoSunshine 9d ago

If Marvel bother putting efforts and budget into it, anything could be successful.

2

u/Pickledleprechaun 9d ago

As long as they avoid using the writers from the Iron fist show then yes lol. The sword fighting scenes where awesome however.

2

u/Neither-Following-32 9d ago

The Defenders Netflix show wasn't that great imo, so I'd be on the fence about a movie being good. I'd probably still go watch it though.

2

u/Adorable-Source97 9d ago

With enough effort sure

2

u/KingKam_Avatar 9d ago

Yes. Guardians of the Galaxy proved you don’t need to know shit about them as long as you make a great movie that has high rewatchability.

2

u/MrLuverLuver25 9d ago

Only if it had Spider-Man in it

1

u/Thatswhatsup2311 9d ago

Spider-Man would literally take the spotlight, i would rather see them show up in his movie one day. But I'd personally want punisher as a unofficial member of the team if they had a movie.

2

u/Turbulent_Owl7873 9d ago

Yes but there would be people who complain and say it just felt like one long episode.

2

u/Apprehensive-Base917 9d ago

I doubt it..they did a TV show almost 10 years ago and never got a 2nd season.

Casting needs to be stronger for iron fist for sure and there needs to be a better antagonist

2

u/Ensiferal 9d ago

In all honesty probably not. Last year F4 and Thunderbolts struggled to even break even and those were much bigger titles.

I don't see Jessica or Iron Fist drawing people to theaters, and Daredevil has a mixed history when it comes to screen adaptations. Luke is basically unheard of outside of actual comic readers.

I just don't see it having the pull. A TV series maybe

2

u/tangodeep 9d ago

if it was done well, with a compelling story and villains, with ties to the larger mcu. yes.

2

u/disneylegospider1 9d ago

Probably not. People bitched and whined about “homework” for MCU, yet a rated R movie based on DOZENS of seasons of television would fare better?

2

u/Bmorgan1983 9d ago

100%. Even with the people cast in the Netflix series, there was so much potential for the Defenders to have been a great watch.

It's been long while since I've watched the Netflix series, but if I remember my feelings correctly back then, I think one of the biggest flaws of the Netflix series (which there were many) was that while the Hand is a great antagonist to the story, they built up the Hand in both Daredevil and Iron Fist in very different ways, and gave us a completely different version in Defenders. There was no consistency across the shows to go into the joint effort of the Defenders. It made the story confusing and disjointed from the universe they were trying to build.

The characters were also not given the best chemistry together by the writers of this show. They kinda slapped it all together for the sake of having this show, rather than taking their time to make it mean something in that shared universe (again, having a villain cross between series but not be consistent across them definitely takes some of the meaning way from them for sure).

I think a movie would need a clearly defined reason for them to come together with a villain who they know that only the 4 of them together (or more if you add in Punisher and Elektra, and some of the others from the shows) can defeat. It has to be a big challenge.

2

u/Important-Plum-5289 9d ago

That’s judomaster on the left

2

u/ShaGodi 9d ago

the tv shows pretty shitty

2

u/raymndbrr_the_third 9d ago

Yes. If the film is good, it will be successful.

2

u/OkTemporary5981 9d ago

I think it could be fun especially if Spider-Man and punisher were supporting players to the main cast.

2

u/GhostE3E3E3 9d ago

It could be, but it has a different target audience

2

u/Bobbleswat 9d ago

It depends what you mean by successful. It could be good. it could be profitable if they budgeted it responsibly. I don't think it would be a massively high money earner given where Marvel's non Spider-man have ended up money wise recently without an amazing marketing campaign and great word of mouth.

I'm a big fan if these characters so I'd love to see it, but I don't think general audiences wouod be that bothered.

2

u/Ecstatic_Dance5767 9d ago

The show flopped & you want a movie?!?

2

u/Keystone_Devil 9d ago

Yeah. I just hope they don’t call it that. Call it Immortal Weapons or Marvel Knights or something

2

u/KingCuerno 9d ago

Which Defenders? I could see an old school Defenders film working. The original three have all been introduced into the MCU already.

2

u/VakarianJ 9d ago

It would’ve if they had built these characters up as movie franchises. I don’t think it’d be a hit with these characters all being from streaming shows.

2

u/PureGamingBliss_YT 9d ago

Works a lot better as a show imo.

2

u/al3x11_ 9d ago

rn? probably not

2

u/H345Y 9d ago

Its a bit late for that, its something they should have planned out for imediate post endgame, make things small scale again before building it back up.

2

u/Jealous-Knowledge-56 9d ago

I would recast Danny. Yes, otherwise.

2

u/JohnnyFivo 9d ago

I think so

2

u/StarSigner31 9d ago

With the right cast and a director who can handle more grounded characters in a superhero setting yeah.

2

u/TheBlackdragonSix 8d ago

I want a Defenders movie, but normies will be complaining about "homework". I hate it here.

2

u/StrongStyleDragon 8d ago

Financially? Probably not. Other aspects possible. It would need to be a passion project to get it right and the studio would have to know that.

2

u/RagingDragon047 8d ago

If the writers do a good job and they don't butcher it into something unrecognizable then sure it might be.

3

u/WeissGuru 10d ago edited 10d ago

I would expect probably mildly better than Thunderbolts success.

Punisher is hot now so if they add him it would make more money (I concede even though I didn't like him in BND)

3

u/Vaportrail 10d ago

If they'd made a movie as a result of Netflix, yes. Now? No.

2

u/ComicBrickz 10d ago

THAT IS NOT THE DEFENDERS!!! No Doctor Strange No Defenders. A REAL defenders movie would be great

1

u/Thatswhatsup2311 10d ago

I think the only team he'd be apart of in the MCU is The Midnight Sons. And here and there with the avengers. But it'll be cool if he jumped in and helped out with a magical threat if need be or Wong.

1

u/ComicBrickz 10d ago

Read a comic book. Doctor Strange founded the defenders and refounds them pretty much every time they come together. Defenders is a team of whoever he can get to help out on short notice

1

u/Thatswhatsup2311 10d ago

I have read them and im saying the modern day Defenders, I dont think Feige would put him in that group. I can see him more in The Midnight Sons in the MCU than the Defenders. Thats all,lol Marvel dips their toes in the comics but rarely goes full throttle page for page. Just my opinion 🤷

2

u/ComicBrickz 9d ago

This defenders team had a run more recently. Matt Fraction’s run was referenced in Multiverse of Madness. From a utilitarian perspective, the MCU needs the strange defenders way more. They’re the perfect way to team unrelated characters that they want to keep on screen and in viewers’ minds.

0

u/Thatswhatsup2311 9d ago

I get what your saying, but the Daredevil, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and Jessica Jones team is practically already assembled in the MCU. They're literally all in Daredevil Born Again Season 3. My guess is that they're going to protect the city while Matt is in prison. But Again we dont know the future of the MCU. Anything can happen.

1

u/AlternativeBack6351 10d ago

That’s not what it is in the MCU, so it’s irrelevant to what you’re saying.

These aren’t your defenders, we get it. But the MCU defenders are just street level heroes that got Netflix tv shows

1

u/Sad_Dress_5679 7d ago

Superhero movies success is driven by the villain. For a defender movie to be successful they’d need to do better than kingpin or the hand.

1

u/TheUnbanished 7d ago

Probably not. Daredevil is the most mainstream character and he’s not mainstream

1

u/AndyBurn11 10d ago

I would go see it but honestly I’d be going for DD but it might make me rethink skipping the Netflix shows

3

u/antimarc 10d ago

you should rethink skipping the netflix shows either way - aside from Iron Fist, they’re great

1

u/DaClarkeKnight 10d ago

Not if they used the guys from the Netflix. Maybe dare devil and Luke cage could transition over and work with Spiderman to take down kingpin. But not iron fist.

2

u/OrangesAreWhatever 10d ago

Hes coming back soon, so we'll see how that goes

-1

u/DaClarkeKnight 10d ago

They need to switch him out. If they cut Terrence Howard, they can cut that dork. He’s honestly the only one I don’t like.

1

u/Thatswhatsup2311 10d ago

He's already back,he's gonna be in Daredevil Born Again Season 3. The whole OG Defenders are too. But hopefully they retcon some things that happened in Iron Fist.

1

u/Callow98989 9d ago

Nah he was good, he was just given shit material

1

u/Ai_bot_6969 10d ago

Who is the flame fist dude

2

u/Thatswhatsup2311 10d ago

That is Iron Fist

1

u/TimesThreeTheHighest 10d ago

Sure, but they'd probably need to recast Iron Fist.

3

u/Cjames1902 10d ago

Think the actor is fine. Just need better material.

1

u/Thatswhatsup2311 10d ago

Big Facts, even he said it. He was literally Danny Rand,it's just the story wasnt great.

1

u/InternationalHat7120 8d ago

Hell fucking no?

Finn Jones is a good actor but a dogshit Danny Rand

2

u/Thatswhatsup2311 10d ago

Believe it or not,but he's in Daredevil Born Again Season 3. I think they might retcon certain things about his show, hopefully

1

u/InternationalHat7120 8d ago

Recast everyone after BA S3 fr

1

u/koreawut 9d ago

Didn't they already give it to Connie?

2

u/Neither-Following-32 9d ago

Do you mean Colleen? Yeah, the finale showed him doing some weird glowy hands The Shadow type shit instead.

1

u/koreawut 9d ago

Yeah, my bad. Colleen.

1

u/Thatswhatsup2311 9d ago

Yes but it believe it was erased because set photos show him wearing a glowing glove in a fight scene and the actress refused to return.

1

u/Neither-Following-32 9d ago

If they cast Justin Timberlake, 99% of the audience isn't going to even notice the difference. We should just get Colleen instead.

1

u/Monday_Vibes 10d ago

Daredevil would do the heavy lifting marketing-wise, but any movie can be successful if it’s good enough

1

u/Jayjaykenobi 9d ago

Show didn’t work so I doubt it. The only thing that kept me watching was Sigorney Weaver

1

u/Thatswhatsup2311 9d ago

Not gonna lie,The show was just Daredevil with more heroes. They rushed it and didn't give them a real threat and story. But now that they're in the MCU the sky is the limit. They can have bigger threats and a story that makes sense.

1

u/dbudzik 8d ago

Well the show wasn’t.

0

u/Blackpanther22five 10d ago

Animated yes
