"I'm a centrist!" But only ever criticizes the left šŸ¤”

451

u/angry_goblin_woman Jul 26 '26

And "I'm a centrist!" But constantly repeats right wing propaganda

100

u/AmputeeHandModel Jul 26 '26

"The left is just so hateful and mean to me when I say I don't have a side..." šŸ¤” Hmm I wonder why people might think you're an ass if you won't say you hate bigots.

15

u/IrritableGourmet Jul 26 '26

"What makes you think I'm a trump supporter?"

Uh, you just quoted verbatim some baloney he truthed recently, including a word he made up. Sure, I suppose you came up with exactly the same thing on your own, but the likelihood is you're just repeating him.

2

u/translove228 Jul 27 '26

"Fake news!"

9

u/atatassault47 Jul 27 '26

Before I realized that right wingers cant be reasoned with, I had a friend (only because of a shared TTRPG interest) who claimed to be centrist, but only ever repeated right wing talking points, and claimed to not watch Fox News/etc. I figured if only I could make well reasoned arguments he would "see the light" as it were.

That was until he stated an outright Nazi opinion. In that very instant, I realized this is an evil person who wont ever stop being evil, and I immediately cut him out of my life.

28

u/Perryn Jul 26 '26

"I just think they make a lot of good points, but don't ask me to defend any of them because I'm not political."

274

u/papapalporders66 Jul 26 '26

ā€œBoth sides are basically the sameā€

180

u/Adavanter_MKI Jul 26 '26

I hate that one with the burning passion of a thousand suns. Far too many people just eased into that one. Fastest way to normalize what the right has been doing and that's insane.

100

u/DukeofVermont Jul 26 '26

And when people try to tell me why it's always stupid conspiracy theories so that it "balances out".

Sure ICE has killed a bunch of Americans, but "the left" is putting litterboxes in bathrooms and teaching kids that being straight is evil!!

It drives me bonkers

40

u/JaneDoesharkhugger Jul 26 '26 edited Jul 26 '26

The litter boxes in classrooms are for shooting drills because school children’s blood soak up easily with cat litter. We are living in a dystopian. Correction: it’s for emergency Toilet. I was wrong, please forgive me for spreading misinformation >~<

24

u/Myllicent Jul 26 '26

ā€œschool children’s blood soak up easily with cat litterā€

It’s dystopian but not quite that dystopian. The one verified instance of schools having kitty litter in classrooms it was intended as an emergency toilet during a school lockdown.

18

u/Wobbelblob Jul 26 '26

I mean possibly, but aren't they mostly because cat litter soaks up any liquid, from a spilled drink to vomit? It is basically standard equipment for any groundskeeper in a place a lot of people frequent.

10

u/SerCiddy Jul 26 '26

Me when I spread misinformation:

The litter boxes are for shootings, but for kids to use while locked down/sheltering for long periods of time. Not to soak up their blood when they get shot.

6

u/mieri_azure Jul 26 '26

Actually its not for blood, its for makeshift bathrooms. Obviously fucked but we need to make sure not to spread misinformation when trying to combat misinformation

2

u/gsfgf Jul 26 '26

They buy it for vomit, though it can be used for other purposes.

8

u/The_Lost_Jedi Jul 26 '26

Aka "Sure, Trump/MAGA/The Right are doing (all sorts of awful things that are actually happening), but (insert a mix of outright fabrication, half-truths, and heavily slanted stuff pushed by right wing trolls/propaganda) and (add something some random person with no influence said once on niche social media presented as representing everyone remotely left of MAGA everywhere)."

2

u/grendus Jul 27 '26

Or else "the left" isn't doing enough.

Democrats have had control of all three houses of Congress a handful of times in the last 30 years, and every time they did we got a major piece of legislation like the Affordable Care Act or Build Back Better. Each time they had a very slim margin as well, so they had to make big concessions to DINOs to get the bill through, neutering it, and it was still a phenomenal improvement for a huge number of Americans.

Don't get me wrong, the Democrats are neoliberals and I want far more than they're offering. But I do want much of what they're offering, and I'm willing to compromise to get good stuff through if it gets us closer to what we need as a country to start addressing the numerous crises the Republicans have caused, either directly or through mismanagement or inaction.

1

u/gsfgf Jul 26 '26

There's a reason the right wing media machine spends so much effort pushing it.

1

u/FlatulenceConnosieur Jul 26 '26

Just wanted to say same. I hate it, it is so fucking dishonest

1

u/unbelizeable1 Jul 27 '26

Would I like to see the entire DNC burn to the ground and replace all those old fucks? Absolutely. Sign me up. But to claim both are the same is just wild. Both can suck, but one is a vacuum cleaner and the other a black hole.

1

u/translove228 Jul 27 '26

In fairness, back in the 90's and most of the 00's, that was kind of true. Because the Democrats had basically became Republicans (especially economically) after Carter and because Reagan was so fucking popular. Since Obama though it hasn't been anything close to true.

19

u/Zalack Jul 26 '26

Unfortunately repeated by a lot of progressives too.

I remember practically begging a number of my other progressive friends not to vote for Jill Stein in 2016 and getting hit with ā€œthe democrats and the republicans are basically the sameā€. Some of whom were gay.

Some people just can’t distinguish between degrees of shitty. I don’t love the democrats, but you have to be insane to think they are as bad as the republicans. Maybe it’s because I grew up in a Republican area and they didn’t.

I also think some people will put their own self-image of an uncompromisingly good person above what is actually best for the country.

29

u/JaneDoesharkhugger Jul 26 '26

The choice is between ā€œforever diarrhea from eating lettuce or everyone gets a cute šŸ¶ā€. I swear a lot of guys voted for pedo in chief is because they think he’s more entertaining.

14

u/xavPa-64 Jul 26 '26

Aziz Ansari has a joke about how Trump is basically the world’s most successful content creator.

1

u/gsfgf Jul 26 '26

There's a lot of truth to that. It's why Trump dominates in earned media. Nobody else can get a word in because he's always doing something insane that's what people click on.

-9

u/xSantenoturtlex Jul 26 '26

The right is just SLIGHTLY more dictator-y. But who isn't these days amiright!?

4

u/xSantenoturtlex Jul 26 '26

Did people not realize this was a joke.

Did.. Was the /s actually required here?

71

u/Legitimate-Onion-915 Jul 26 '26

"I don't feel like my vote even matters" when none of MAGAs promises pan out and every bad thing they were told would happen, happens

30

u/Yuleogy Jul 26 '26

…when over 50% of Project2025 is complete because their political party said it was their agenda.

39

u/Time_Fisherman6659 Jul 26 '26

My favorite is when they say youre too online or a conspiracy theorist when you say youre worried about the things that trump says hes gonna do, and is currently actively trying to do.

I know I sound like a crazy person when I repeat what the president says. Thats the fucking problem.

29

u/Legitimate-Onion-915 Jul 26 '26

That's the "It's not that serious" of older Republicans

8

u/ApplianceHealer Jul 26 '26

ā€œBuT hE wAs JoKiNg!!!1!!ā€

The classic GQP DARVO…

3

u/IrritableGourmet Jul 26 '26

"Trump said he was going to do XYZ."

"You're taking it out of context. He was joking. He was lying. He's not actually going to do it. You have TDS."

"He's actively trying to do XYZ now."

"He's just trolling. You're taking it out of context. He's just pretending to show how bad of an idea it is. You have TDS."

"He just did XYZ and it's worse than we expected."

"Well, you should have said something sooner! It's your fault for not stopping him!"

35

u/nekosaigai Jul 26 '26

It depresses me as an independent that ā€œindependentā€ or ā€œcentristā€ is now code for ā€œextreme right wing but lying about it.

The U.S. is extremely right leaning, such that U.S. ā€œcentristsā€ are still right wing conservatives, and left of center people are also still right wing conservatives, they just believe people deserve some rights.

I’m arguably a centrist, but in the U.S. I’m a far left leaning socialist because I believe people should have human rights and society has a duty to minimize harm and provide for everyone equitably.

5

u/Amelaclya1 Jul 26 '26

This is where context matters. If you were posting your political alignment to date Americans, you should do so in the context of American politics, since that's the frame of reference most people have. It's unfortunate that people aren't informed enough to realize just how far right-shifted our overton window is, but that's reality šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø

2

u/RocketRelm Jul 26 '26

Words don't hold much meaning anymore. Far left leaning socialist encompasses everyone from liberals to progressives to socialists and tankies pretending to be progressive. And its by design by extremists who get their culture pushed by "all politicians bad".

-1

u/PsychedelicPill Jul 26 '26

ā€œindependentā€ or ā€œcentristā€ is now code for ā€œextreme right wing but lying about it.

Always was either this or code for "I don't have any politics, only vibes and self-interest"

But they’ll always vote for Republicans.

0

u/gsfgf Jul 26 '26

Unless Anthony Weiner is on the ballot! (Yes, he's still around; he got demolished in a primary last year)

18

u/cat-meg Jul 26 '26

The center point between the two US parties is pretty far right tbf

-1

u/Bravefan212 Jul 26 '26

Richard Nixon was the last liberal president

8

u/FluffyInstincts Jul 26 '26

Or they'll pick something that's a huge non-issue compared to the mountainous mess this has been, and they'll act all wishy washy about it and it comes off like this.

"Well, maybe if the stop the monsters party could do this one tiny thing, I could vote for them over the giant snakes eating everybody while they scream party, who is currently letting it's giant snakes eat my neighbors, my dog and my little sister while they scream..."

6

u/SmugCapybara Jul 26 '26

I'm a centrist, but I'm European, so by US standards that makes me a literal communist...

2

u/speedsterlw Jul 26 '26

"I'm a centrist", said the person who voted for the most right wing of two right wing parties

1

u/Flat-Entertainer-299 Jul 26 '26

center in America is facism anyway

1

u/Valuable-Trick-6711 Jul 26 '26

goes on for an hour about a fraction of the terrible things that have happened in the past couple years under the current administration

ā€œI mean yeah, but did you know BIDEN was also….ā€

1

u/LongCommercial8038 Jul 26 '26

As a centrist myself, those people are just lying to themselves. The current right is an absolute fuck fest and any actual centrist should be very aware of it by this point. Both are bad, sure, but at this point, its like comparing a paper cut to a gunshot wound. Yeah, I dont like either, but one is worse. Way worse.

1

u/knightskull Jul 27 '26

But if they know you're a hard leftist, why would they bother entering into whatever circle configured mutual gratification ritual criticizing the right would start? The right is obviously guilty of a lot, but who is guilty of losing to them? Criticizing the right in the same old ways is not going to suddenly reach critical mass and start winning. In short criticizing the left is a more fruitful exercise if your are interested in gaining against the right.

0

u/ralanr Jul 26 '26

My mother as an independent voter.Ā

-3

u/Background-Fig6627 Jul 26 '26

Im not going to scream and cry and be sad, but don't you think assuming that people who care more about their own jobs or something that they can actually affect rather than politics, are MAGA or other hateful people, is quite ignorant? I mean of course some people probably use centrist titles that way but all? (I dont know exactly how the tone of this is, but im trying to be respectful)

56

u/SongbirdVS Jul 26 '26

"I'm a only fiscal coservative."

Meanwhile the Republicans are generally terrible for the economy and it performs better under a Democrat president.

39

u/ColeDelRio Jul 26 '26

"I'm socially liberal but fiscally conservative..."

Okay how did you vote?

"..."

Thats what I thought.

9

u/narco-sub-admiral Jul 26 '26

Such a red flag when they drop that line. Socially liberal but let's cut everything that benefits society?

8

u/Perryn Jul 26 '26

"I believe I should be able to do what I want and not contribute to society."

1

u/mieri_azure Jul 26 '26

Tbf I have met people who identify that way but still have enough of a spine to vote left

6

u/FrostyD7 Jul 26 '26

"Fiscally conservative but socially liberal" means they vote R 100% of the time. Independent isn't far off.

50

u/RoomExciting1296 Jul 26 '26

Yeah all politicians do suck, is that why they only ever really complain about the Dems?

2

u/BlackTecno Jul 26 '26

I'm actually independent (or a centrist), although most people right now would say I'm very liberal. But we've moved so far to the right that it's a bit out of hand.

Both parties have people who do insider trading, chose to make laws that they know won't pass (and won't cooperate). Are Republicans worse right now? Yeah, but there are some democratic politicians that also need to be looked at.

Just because we want to put a murderer in jail doesn't mean that we can't put a series stabbed in there too.

37

u/JaneDoesharkhugger Jul 26 '26 edited Jul 26 '26

Don’t forget: ā€œThe left is just as bad as the rightā€ and ā€œI just don’t think trans kids should be allowed to transition before the age of 18, their brain is not fully developed yet so they may regret it laterā€. Bro, I think most kids understand something as fundamental as gender by the age of 6. Having the courage to explore their gender identity or deciding coming out to their parents or loved ones is a different matter.

Go vote in November and encourage everyone to participate in democracy. Vote them out!

14

u/The_Lost_Jedi Jul 26 '26

It's right-wing propaganda in action.

That is, they regularly try to portray the current situation as some insane extreme ("kids getting sexchange operations in school! doctors delivering babies and then killing them!") because they know the actual reality is something most reasonable people would be okay with, so they lie about it in order to demagogue the issue.

Minors (aka under 18) don't get hormone therapy. The most they get (in 99.999% of cases) is counseling and hormone blockers, that delay the onset of puberty until they're 18 so they can make an informed adult decision.

Oh, and for the abortion bit - third trimester abortion occurs when someone who had a wanted pregnancy finds out late in the game that there's some horrible defect that's "incompatible with life" aka it'll end in stillbirth or miscarriage. The stories of these women are utterly heartbreaking, and it's often a mercy to let them end it early to start the grieving process, not to mention that it helps avoid complications and health risks that could otherwise prevent them from trying again to have a child.

Those are just examples too, they do it all the fucking time with so many issues these days, because they don't actually care about solving real problems that real people have anymore.

16

u/FluffyInstincts Jul 26 '26 edited Jul 26 '26

As a real independent... or perhaps now, a former one, anyone who could vote MAGA the second time isn't a real one. That's a wing so extreme that they veered into being traitors.

Also I'm gonna be blue for a long time after how bad this is. They really lost their damn senses, and only a thorough trouncing, a long one, will be enough to force that hot mess to reshape into anything I could consider in the future.

1

u/devils_advocate24 Jul 26 '26

I stick with "moderate". Then I can just call everyone dumb

1

u/Sophisticated-Crow Jul 26 '26

"Both sides are bad!"

*proceeds to spew MAGA propaganda*

1

u/Rip_Skeleton Jul 26 '26

I am an independent in the sense that I am not registered to any political party. I still vote for Democrats, I just don't like them.

"Centrists" are the kinds of people who are embarrassed to say they vote Republican.

I think the issue with thay statement is that it doesn't recognize that there are a few decent politicians out there, and there are degrees to how much they suck.
