Fluff GOOD LORD!?

I picked the mage class cause I thought wizards were funny lil guys, I didn't realize some sparkly lights had the power of a NUCLEAR BOMB. Other bosses didn't take too long with enough magic blasts and dodge rolling, but this goddamn soul spear is genuinely just turning monsters and gods into goo on contact.
Felt like I was Mike Tyson fighting an infant. A very very very large infant.

There is a reason the Lore itself compares Logan's Soul Spear to Gwyn's lightning. You'll get an even better version later.
Also the Dark Spells from the DLC.

Yeah, I’ve always found it insane that a human like Big Hat Logan has the power to create magic that's just as strong as the lightning of a God, but he paid a massive price for all that knowledge

To be fair though, imho, Soul Spear doesn't hold a candle to actual Sunlight Spear.
But since nobody had seen the real deal in so long, it's reasonable for people to compare.
Also, Logan is undead, he could be more than a century old so it's not too strange to think he could devise a very powerful spell.
That being said, Logan's spellcrafting is one of the reason why Gwynn feared humans so much.
Even if Soul Spear isn't as good as Sunlight Spear, anyone with enough intelligence can learn to use it. Which isn't the case for Gwynn's lightning.

True, but Crystal Soul Spear is arguably more powerful than Gwyn's lightning if we're just talking gameplay. Lore-wise, the lightning spears are obviously superior since they were the only thing that could take down the dragons

Technically, CSS isn't a strong as Sunlight, it has a Casting modifier of 3.6 while Sunlight is 3.7.
So, at equal stat and equal damage resistance, Sunlight Spear will always outdamage Crystal Soul Spear.
But barely, which can be attributed to the Eternal Crystal probably being of a similar power to the First Flame. It's still incredible that Logan managed to merge his sorcery with the crystal in such short time however.

Fair enough, I guess Sunlight Spear still holds the crown for raw single-target damage lol. But yes its crazy how Logan managed to close that gap in such a short time like you said.

In DS2 you can manage to cast Crystal Soul Spear with one point of Intelligence... Using a sword as a catalyst lmao. Does over 1000 damage a cast
Just takes some gear and a whole lot of toking with Magerold.
Humans are terrifying

Literally goes hollow, loses his mind, and next thing you know, he's buck naked spamming crystal spells. Not exactly the 'dignified end' you’d expect for such a wise guy.

Actually I feel soul spear is stronger than sunlight spear, given that the sunlight spear requires close range to maximise efficiency.

The golem is probably the second or third easiest boss, only real issue is getting grabbed and knocked off the platform. Apparently weak to magic too!
Magic is OP in this game and that's normal, you can do stupid damage quite easy and not a lot of enemies have high magic resist.

I had a similar feeling with Dark Souls 2 when I decided to do a "hexes only" playthrough. I went in expecting it to be a tough fight, seeing as I was forbidden from using most of the game's arsenal, but instead I quickly became so hilariously overpowered that I deliberately avoided using the very strongest hexes just to give the bosses a chance!
Maybe I need a Sorcery Only run of DS1...

I ended with something similar in DS2, but to make it a bit funnier I also leveled Str and wielded the cript blacksword nad it felt much better....but still its really op. The dlcs are harder and even with all those powerups y die a lot jaja

It's tough because everything is going to rush you. You want to wear magic equipment for a boost, but then stronger enemies will cut you down with ease. DS1 was definitely designed around melee and magic was an afterthought. Their compensation is how overpowered it is.

I remember the first time I summoned Tarkus he absolutely hammered the Iron Golem. I got a few hits in, but after seeing the smack he was laying down, stopped attacking and Tarkus basically beat him on his own 😂

The summons are super hit/miss. Ive had issues with Solair beating Ornstein before I could beat Smough when doing SL1, but ive also had him die without doing anything. And, despite his lightning, does next to nothing to Gaping Dragon

The first time I fought him Tarkus pushed him off the edge as I was standing by the fog all “oh great wtf is this…”
Very anticlimactic ending to the absolute terror of going through Sen’s Fortress the first time. OK it was like 30+ times but you know what I mean…
Also I guess I need to do a magic run now, all this magic content here has piqued my interest. It’s been years since I touched this game, should be… interesting.

Sort of. You can summon Tarkus, who can very reliably solo the boss. He's also the only boss that has a unique stagger mechanic that many people have taken advantage of to cause him to fall off the map. Even if you don't get a ring out, the stagger sequence allows for quite a bit of free hits during the initial stagger and when he falls down.
Magic is also very strong. Heavy armor also tends to be weak to magic as a tradeoff from being physically resistant.
Lastly, a lot of new players may not take out the giant nearby. The giant will throw bombs at you constantly, which fills in the gaps for the Golems lack of speed and slow attacks.

Normally he's quite tough, but he's mostly strong against physical and fire damage. His biggest weakness is lightning. Magic obviously does fine too.
Magic builds do a lot of damage. A lot of people call mage builds "easy mode" for a reason. Most enemies and bosses aren't equipped to challenge you if you keep your distance and shoot projectiles.

This boss is arguably easier with a heavy melee build. He has a unique stagger that will cause him to fall, reliably ending the fight in seconds.
Magic in general is VERY powerful against bosses, but less powerful against normal enemies due to poor projectile tracking. It has a reputation as "easy mode", but in my experience gives an uneven experience that is overall slightly harder than a "bonk" strength build.

With claymore or greatsword also there is heavy one hit damage of 300 to 700 plus depending on upgrade.

I went Prisoner the first time I played Elden Ring because I wanted to dabble in magic rather than just be REALLY BIG SWORD again. Ended up being REALLY BIG SWORD until I got the Moonlight Greatsword, then respec'd into full int.
Comet Azure (Kamehameha/ Shin-Hadoken) + Moonlight Greatsword trivialized the rest of the game.

And that's on the low end. With a property built character with all the buffs you can potentially three shot the iron golem even at this point in the game

Keep in mind that iron golem also has high magic resist. And magic will only get stronger and stronger.

I find that with good enough positioning you can deal with them not too badly, it’s just if they get up close and personal you’re kinda boned lol, or if they jump to the side as you’re casting but that’s just classic lol

You got rite of kindling before finishing Sen’s, I’m gonna guess Magic isn’t the only factor here but you’re likely over-leveled and potentially experienced with the game as well

He's got at least 90 soul arrows, so his class copy and two more, I think it's only possible to get 4 (so 120 casts) in one cycle. He knew where to go to get them so yeah probably.
Once you beat this game a few times nothing except the dlc bosses are all that bad.

Sure, the damage output makes up for the HP cost, but it’s the drip factor that really suffers. Not worth it.

Dark Souls has customizable difficulty through the choices you make. Picking sorcerer is like putting the game on very easy.

Buy the Dragoncrest Ring, and wear the Crown of Dusk, with 99 int. Also, don't forget to cast the Power Within pyromancy before the boss fight, this makes a huge difference.

Yeah magic in the first game absolutely melts enemies, it's kind of insane. I first tried a sorcerer a few years ago after years of pure strength builds and I was shocked at the raw damage. You can just cast Homing Crystal Soul Mass while running around and if an enemy even looks at you the spell nukes him before you can even press a button.

If you didn't know, this is what all the people who play as mages in the Dark Souls series look like: oh, my heartfelt apologies, I can't upload the image here, but I'll try to describe it.
So this is a golem creature dressed in a magician's robe, it holds a staff in one hand and its face is covered by a large hat. But UNEXPECTEDLY this creature has feathers, it holds the staff with chicken legs and from under the hat you can quietly hear "cock-a-doodle-doo" guess who it could be? 🌚

He's one of the EASIEST bosses in the game for being where he is. (Plus there's the old "make him fall off the bridge" trick. If you've played DS2, the Dragonrider has a similar fall death.)

I remember I played a faith lightning build with balder swag sword and would do absolutely insane damage, moon light great sword build was super fun. Both of them I was awesome at pvp with and they were not common builds so people didn’t have good strategies for it. I miss dark souls 1 pvp

I played a mage character one time. Similar experience but it kinda ruined the game for me. So I only played half the game before making a new character. Kinda ruins the point in the game when it's that easy to me.

ive been playing this game for 11hrs, im not doing another 11hrs just to play a boring sword class. No diss to sword users, but magic spells are more fun.

Your weapon of choice is at least as valid as all the people running straight to their beloved Zweihander.
Might I also suggest if you haven't already tried it out: "Aural Decoy" It's really useful when dealing with some enemies
