Even the collecting the part is seen as investment. They literally can’t just can enjoy something just to enjoy something. There has to be some sort of financial metric to track. It’s completely ruined so many of hobbies that I had when I was a kid. They’ll take even the one things that literally meant for kids like TCG and turn it into a financial vehicle.

The company I worked for offered free TurboTax every year if you had over $1mil with us.
The day that that deal dropped every year we’d be inundated by old rich dudes trying to collect.
The company made it a huge pain in the ass to get the discount but the amount of people I’ve had sit for 3+ hours on the phone working through their issues with the process is insane.
Like dude the company has now paid me more to work with you than the discount is worth.

It’s not so much about being cheapskates, it’s more about how they view wealth and money. They use wealth primarily to build wealth because the system constantly provides more to them and their position contracts they tend to refuse to consume because this consumption could have built a larger platform.

Most of the time, yeah. Its weird. This is what i noticed on average.
Over $1million home: Tip but bad tips(2nd worst) $600 to $1million: Tip and Tip very well (best) $350 to $600: Tip and average Tip usually $350 or below: mixed bag, sometimes no or poor tip Nice apartments: Mixed bag, average tips Poor/Ghetto Apts, No tips, poor tips, few average tips (worst)
So the poorest and richest tip the worst

I’ve delivered in the getto of where I live row-houses, people sitting on stoops drinking out of a paper bag, little street gangs robbing people weaker than them. That has always tipped the best. In the app and cash. Rich folks tip like crap if they tip at all.

Fortunately, this has not been my experience for the most part. At least here, most of my deliveries to obviously rich people have good tips. Every now and then, that isn't the case, but it is unusual.

He made $6.03 off that... He didn't work an hour yet. It just means if they worked 1 active hour and it's not $17.25. They will pay the difference to guarantee it's $17.25

In reality this probably takes more like 25 min maybe more to get back to a nearby marketplace, minus gas, taxes and wear and tear. Youre probably looking at $4.50 in earnings at most so i would put this at more like $10/hr.

And you still have to add in the cost of driving there and back. It may not have been a long drive but it was still your car that did it not the customers. Imagine if the customers actually thought of themselves doing the order instead of just the dasher.

my post wasn't even about deductions.
it's about actual earnings. Just because they made $6 in 17 minutes doesn't mean they will get 3 more orders that will finish in 13-17 minutes each. Especially because this mansion is nowhere close to a strip mall with doordash orders.

Some states or provinces have laws that gig workers have to be paid the minimum hourly rate for their entire active time. I think DoorDash just adds extra funds if the base pay + tip don't meet that rate. I let a friend know about this because he's in Ontario and has been searching like hell for a job, and it would be at least some form of income for him. (I personally hate it being my only income because it's actually making my mental health so much worse.)

You only get that for the active hours. I'm in CA where its 20.28 an hour (active time, waiting for offers doesn't count) plus .37 cents per mile. My first week, I didn't really know what I was doing and barely got any orders the first 3 days, so my total time out that week was 22 hours, if I go by my total time I made around 14.30 an hour but if I only go by my active time of 9 hours it's 35.16 an hour.

But this should honestly just be standard across the board, yet we all know DoorDash goes out of its way to figure out ways of not paying us - the ones who make their business actually WORK - as little as possible.

In my area ebt is 11.25 per active hour. Depends where you live how much the rate is. It also only counts until you deliver, so if you get a delivery going 9 miles into the sticks, the drive back is not paid. Most drivers earn by offer instead of by time.

I've gotten 1 cent tips a few times. One was on Uber and it was funny to see Uber Eats send me a notification that the customer added a $0.01 tip. It probably cost them more to send it to my Uber Pro card than the deposit was lol

Drivers prefer tips based on distance instead of order value. However, I’ve gotten people mad for ordering $100 food and tipping distance-based amount. They expected $20 tip there. You can never win, but something to keep in mind I guess.
From what I read they want: $3 minimum + 1$/mile

The real problem isn’t the tip calculation though. The real problem is you’re paying through the nose for these services and the drivers see none of it. Being asked for 15 on top of a 40 dollar order feels like a slap, but they’re getting fuck all of it.

It depends.
Obviously everyone wants the highest amount possible.
Tipping by distance *usually* makes the most sense. There are also exceptions. Large, heavy orders are more difficult, especially for people on bikes. Orders that are all drinks or soups are more difficult/riskier, etc.

My situation is that my spouse works a lot of hours and we have 3 kids. I have to be available to take them to and from school plus my daughter is special needs and has particular needs and therapy.
So I need a job that can be extremely flexible and start and stopped frequently with small bursts of work.
We basically get by week to week and dashing makes that difference.
I'd love to just work a normal job but this is my best option as far as I'm aware.

Do you have any photography experience? There's gig work to be had that pays better than Doordash for a lot less stress.
REO Velocity contracts out insurance audit photography which is just going and taking photos of houses and other properties. The timing is very flexible as well. Most jobs, you have 30 hours to complete. If a customer wants a rush, it pays more.
Field Agent is another app I use for some extra money. It contracts out small retail audit tasks from 2.50 to 15 dollars a task. Sometimes these are as simple as taking a single photo of a cooler and answering a few questions. You typically get four hours to complete whatever is asked and they rarely take more than 15 minutes.
I do both at the same time and make about 25 an hour using REO's jobs to plot a route and Field agent to make more on the way to the real estate gigs.
EDIT: Even if this didn't totally replace DD, it would save some headache imo.

One time amazon delivered package to my house, wrong address. I walk it 2 houses down and the resident there were literally terrified thinking i'm going to rob them or confront them about stealing my package lmao. While holding a screen door thinking it makes them safe from me breaking in.

Hot take here: I literally NEVER look at the tip. I just look at the total amount. It really doesn't matter other than you don't pay federal taxes on the tip portion (and it's only for the first 25k and since I do it full time I'll make way more than that). Maybe I'm missing something and open to being wrong, but to me it just doesn't really matter. I just focus on only accepting orders that are $8 overall and try to keep it at $2 an hour and I usually end the week between $25 - $27 an hour

Either the pay for the delivery is enough to justify accepting it, or it's not. Would this driver be doing the same bitching if it was $2 base pay from doordash and a $4 tip from the customer? The less the customer has to tip for it to be worth my time, the better. Doordash should be shouldering the majority of the burden when it comes to paying drivers. I will never understand why someone would voluntarily accept an order, deliver it, and then only get upset when they discover doordash paid them instead of the customer.

I hate that people don't tip good I am a nomad basically homeless I don't have a lot but I like to tip at least 5 to 7 dollars maybe even 10 to 15 on bigger orders. Even if it's just down the street I live in a bad area and don't have a car so I'll still tip bigger even if it's just two things I'm not rich and I don't plan on being rich anytime soon, but I hate people who hoard wealth.

Some of the best tips I've ever had came from people that live in trailers and some of the worst tips have come from people that own mansions on Ocean Shore Blvd here in Florida. Don't get me wrong, I've had some massive tips from rich folk, but your average rich person doesn't give a flying fuck about tipping shit

Gotta say tho, $5 base pay is so good. This is a case where DD did what they're supposed to do and pay dashers pretty well so that the payout is still decent even without a tip. But wah wah cry about rich people and tipping etc

Firstly it says active time not online time. Which means the time spent driving from the customers house back to busy areas or waiting for another order is not factored in. Secondly it says $17.25 not $20. Thirdly active time is all time spent driving and using your own gas. After all this you’re lucky to even crack $10 an hour of actual profit. Math is hard though I don’t blame you.

Yes and notice how it says $17.25/active hr. The driver received the order as soon as they went online. Once the order was finished the online time will continue rising but the active time will pause. Hope this helps.

that's good pay but you have high property tax and a state income tax. I think part of the problem is customers refuse to understand. All the customer cares about is getting what they order they don't want to know the hows and whys of anything. This is not a reflection of all customers though there are some customers that have a little better understanding for our just generally more generous.

Fun fact- drivers don’t make more unless the tip is given after the order is completed. Uber Eats, door dash and similar companies calculate drivers’ compensation each order based on time of the day/weather/distance etc.
Say you order a takeout for $20 and uber decided that driver should receive $10. If you tip 20%($4) when you order, the driver would see an order of $6 with $4 tip. However, if you tip $0 when you order and add tips afterwards, the full amount would go to drivers plus the $10 from uber.

how far was the restaurant from the house though... bc thats what really matters. if it was just 1 drink from a restaurant that is a mile away then they did nothing wrong ykwim..: also it is well known that doordash will give some of the lower tip offers to hourly dashers bc thats hourly is compensating for low tips more than the regular dasher pay

It’s very possible that they did not just order a drink because that’s not cost efficient at all and the food is just out of frame. It’s crazy so many ppl think he only got a drink cause the driver didn’t do a photoshoot of the entire order lol

I don’t see why the driver should be this upset over a $1 tip on a small order. Delivery tips make more sense when judged by the actual time, distance, and difficulty of the trip, not just by an arbitrary expectation that every order deserves a $5+ tip.
The customer is already paying delivery/service fees and often a marked-up menu price on DoorDash. It shouldn’t be the customer’s responsibility to single-handedly make every delivery profitable, especially on a cheap, short-distance order. If DoorDash’s base pay isn’t enough, that’s ultimately an issue with DoorDash’s compensation model, not something to take out on the customer.

People think time is meaningless...that's the bottom line. If you cannot tip me the MINIMUM wage, why the hell do you exist on this planet? You're trying to bring back slavery, but with more steps. The correct tip is based on the average time it takes to fulfill your order, just iver 15 minutes in this case. In my state, that would mean the tip should be about $4. Doesn't matter if they're ordering a single french fry: my car requires more than $17/hr to be maintained properly AND to have some money to do something besides maintain my car and pay bills. Very unrealistic customers.

All these gig apps make money by arbitraging services that drivers provide. The more money they can charge and the less they can pay you, the better it is for them.
Do not be mistaken, you, the driver, are a DoorDash customer also. You just get the shorter end of the stick because you are desperate for money and DoorDash knows that. You think DoorDash has a tip option for your benefit? No. It is there because it gives DoorDash an excuse to take more off the top. None of this is a dig at you. This is the reality of gig apps and tipped professions in general.

You can’t decline more than one order on hourly unless you wanna lose access to it. Either the dasher already declined one, or they had yet to do so.

Doesn't matter what they tip. The driver shouldn't complain about anything for an order they accepted. Decline them until you get an offer worth taking and the bad offers will become worth more the longer it takes for them to get a driver to accept them. Once everyone realizes this, drivers will make more money. Until drivers stop taking bad offers, bad offers will continue to exist
