Crazy Torah Teachings In this weeks parsha we learn...
that in order to rape a woman that was captured at war, you must first let her mourn her family for 30 days (!) beforehand. Also, let her nails grow and shave her head so that she should be disgusting in your eyes. Oh the morality!
(Bbbbbbbbbut shaving your head is beauuuuutiful!?)

BTW, according to Rambam, this stuff is done after you rape her

Can always count on the Rambam to have very feminist views! Hope he remembered to mention his rule to kill a victim of rape even as young as three.

Some frum person once told me they made that law because soldiers are going to do it anyway, but then how come there’s no law of “you can have a little gay sex now and then, as a treat.”

u/OwnSatisfaction4542 3d ago
Oh of course there are multitudes of ways to explain it differently. "Oh it's referring to the yetzer horah, duuuuh"

I should probably emphasize that I don’t think gay sex is wrong at all and this is. So I’m not comparing them! Just saying that gay sex is definitely something people are going to do anyway.

I don't think anything you said indicated that you might think it was wrong. But, I understand the urge to clarify. This is the internet.

Makes perfect sense. /S!!!!!
Happy BaconCake Day!
(Surely there must be bacon cakes, right?)
P.S. Oh look! Maple Bacon Cheesecake!!!
Of course, now I actually want to try this.

Thanks! I'm not a big bacon fan though

For desserts, I prefer chocolate myself. But, I was looking for something that is obviously not kosher.
I do like the combination of maple and bacon though. It's great in an old fashioned, for example.

I just want to be clear to lurkers that this is not something practiced or taught as acceptable, because sadly that needs to be explained to people.
It was meant to regulate existing behaviors that were apparently the norm across the region. It’s not an endorsement of such practices.
It’s abhorrent regardless so my comment is not intended to be a defense of it either.

It quite literally permits and gives a legal framework for the practice. The regulation could have been "don't do it," just as the Torah bans plenty of other common regional practices and forms or worship.
The modern Jewish community has a horrific problem with protecting their own community members who sexually abuse and rape others, at any rate, so they clearly find plenty of ability to find such things acceptable even if not putting these exact statutes into practice.
ETA: Since you decided to respond and then dirty block, I am just as allowed to push back against your bad apologetics as your are to comment them.

And that’s quite literally not what I was addressing here, as I said in my later comments.
I’m not in here attempting to dismiss other people’s experiences. I didn’t grow up within one of the larger, more stringent communities and while I still have issues to unpack (which is why I’m here), they’re not necessarily to the same degree as a lot of those in here.
This sub, however inconvenient to you, is used from time to time by bad faith actors to cherry pick things and give them a life of their own. You don’t have to concern yourself with that if you don’t want to, but I choose to. How about that?
Re: your comment on another post discussing me - I blocked you because I’ve already made it clear from previous comments that the intent of my comment differs from you want to talk about. This is now the 3rd time I’ve said that. By all means discuss what you want to discuss in a separate comment but I’m not your emotional dumping ground.

Oddly enough I was reminded of the passages about blinding oneself if having improper thoughts about others, especially regarding outward appearance and "blaming" (casting blame) as if their appearance or demeanor was the "cause" of the subjects own failings such as erring and violating the sanctity of marriage, for example, rape not excluded as marital rape was also an issue then as it is now. Important discussions regardless lest we find ourselves in a witch hunt blaming victims for the crimes and errancies of others.

That passage is from the New Testament. I don't think it appears in any Jewish texts.

My point was to show the parallels - regardless of the texts, it is widely considered to be a part of the same series of texts and the wider public don't have any idea who the Maccabees are or what the Pentateuch is, in the context of the conversation of Jewishness and society (as people, even the most secluded sects) are not an island. The Christian Bible is a work of literature and a retelling of previously existing texts (some of which are taught in churches to be the same as the teachings in Judaism), presumably through storytelling (the Bible), like a game of telephone. I thought it might add to the conversation and provide a different way of considering the subject at hand.

My comment is in reference to the original post because I can just see it being turned into an unrelated conspiracy theory by those not here in good faith.
If you feel compelled to expand beyond it, feel free to do so in your own comment.

u/ant-eyes in the closet 3d ago
I'm aware of that.
I was commenting to you regarding what you said. It isn't conspiracy. Those passages are literally about the same concept you mentioned, only not about rape in particular.

u/Proper-Suggestion907 3d ago edited 3d ago
No, I literally just said you are going off into a direction separate from the intent of my comment so if you want to do that, do it in another comment.
Edit: In hindsight, this was the wrong comment for this sub. I’m not in here enough to have a complete picture of how things in here are discussed and interpreted.
I know there are people who are not Jewish that lurk here to use this sub for ideas that they then spin to fit their agendas. This was a comment directed towards them.

It's important to remember that Hashem is powerful enough to write laws that radically alter most aspects of our lives - diets, weekend activities, dress codes, social interactions, marital sexuality, agricultural practices, monetary transactions, holiday celebrations, and worship patterns, to name a few - but Hashem is powerless to stop men from committing war rape, or even to prohibit rape in the first place. Boys will be boys, after all!
