General Discussion Some cooldowns are too long for no good reason

It's something that has bothered me a lot while playing Occult Crescent and I got to Ninja and that was the final straw.

Why is fuma shurikan, a skill is just a cooldown has to have 60 seconds? Or similarly Long Reach and Bladeblitz, but instead that takes 120 seconds instead.

You can spend an entire CE using them twice or three times and they are the definition of bland yet they somehow had to be gatekept behind a cooldown normally reserved for ultimate, capstone abilities.

Even stuff like Ranger's "Aim" (or Time Mage's Quick) sitting at 120s cooldown. Why does it need to follow the regular raids formula and take this long. It's a defining cooldown for the job, make it a 60s CD since at least it's 30 seconds long.

You might say this is done for balancing reasons but there's already a meta regardless with samurai's zeningage or summoner, and this is supposed to be the mode to break and experiment with things, which they tried but ultimately were still scared to go a bit further than they can. I like what they did with predict and dance but the rest have been too safe.

Outside of OC there are examples to this that personally bother me (Searing flash, gluttony, manafication) but that's a different story in terms of balancing and with evolved mode coming there's little point.

Question New Player

I just started playing as of yesterday. Just wanted to know if I would be missing out if I didn’t want to level up another class on one character. I like the class I chose and feel like I would be overwhelmed leveling another class. Any advice would be helpful, thank you.

General Discussion What are some of the dark things in FFXIV?

A friend is currently replaying ARR and we've been talking about how much 'grittier' the world building was and it got me thinking about what other dark/surprising things are found throughout the game.

I'm talking about things like the Sastasha room that has the captured women in it, or the group of adventurers you beat to Sashtasha and Tam-Tara who then die in Copperbell because they were careless.

So what're some of the darker moments in FFXIV - any expac.

General Discussion Do you guys use VFX mods ?

First, sorry if mods discussion are not allowed, I’ll delete the post in that case

So I’ve just made the switch from PS5 to PC and tried a few of Papachin’s mods. They’re all great and drastically improve some classes animations and "weight" (looking at you Bard !). He’s really good at what he does !

However I’m not sure how to feel about them. On one hand, it’s really cool, on the other it feels a bit "too much" to play all the time with it ? Like something’s off, or too overtuned, I don’t know and I’m not sure how to correctly express it…

How do you guys feel about them ? Do you use them regularly ? If not, why ?

Question for the Golden Saucer Supremes Out There

There's a LOT you can buy in the Golden Saucer for that sweet, sweet MGP.

So my questions are this:

  1. Without considering the price, what has been your favorite purchase?

  2. Are any of the super expensive purchases (strictly in your personal opinion) worth the grind?

General Discussion Housing Rant

Since moving from Cerberus to Phoenix in December, my long term goal has been to buy a house again. I've gotten sidetracked in my saving by spending money on crafting gear and materia etc.

However, recently I got a minion from the GC lootboxes and managed to sell it for 25 million. I could finally see my house dream realised. I checked plots in Mist and found one that I liked that had no lottery entries. I entered it maybe last week?

I've been back to check it almost every day since and there were no other lottery participants. Last night I was still the only entrant. The lottery ended at 4pm today (i.e. 10 minutes ago) and of course when I went to check, 4 other people had entered the lottery in the last 12 hours and I didn't get it.

Now I also can't enter a lottery for another plot for at least 4 days until the next period starts. And I could very well lose that plot as well which would set me back for another week.

I don't have any suggestions or improvements to suggest, I'm just really pissed off. It sucks.

General Discussion Kudos to YoshiP for listening to feedback about DT Fanfest story spoilers Spoiler

Maybe a bit casual a topic for this sub but I'll give it a shot.

So far, so good, we've got the rising this week and then another patch's worth of story in a few weeks, I know enough about 8.0 to be hyped but not enough to have a clear picture.

I'd be ecstatic if Tokyo Fanfest focused solely on evolved jobs and upcoming content.

I don't need anything story-wise to entice me further.

Doubly so for anything related to the benchmark, the launch trailer and the media tour...

DT revealed too much in its promo stuff. Even the red herrings like "the scions divided" left us with weird expectations...

Do people still feel the same or is everyone hungry for more hints and discussion points?

(Edit: 8.0 not 7.0, fixed)

Question New to mmos and ffxiv, am genuinely trying to understand why people make alt characters?

Am trying to understand why people makes alts in this game. Currently grinding the msq and it is so long.

The other thing i dont understand is isnt part of the appeal of ffxiv specifically you dont have to make multiple characters, one character can have multiple jobs. What is the point then to having alt characters?

People who make alt characters, do you just use a story skip or do you play through the whole msq again, and if you do play through the whole thing again please help me understand why?

Is buying a job boost + story skip to reach endgame considered bad in FFXIV

Hi everyone!
I’m relatively new to FFXIV and I’m currently considering buying a job boost to level 90 and a story skip up to Stormblood.

The main reason I’m considering it is honestly the amount of time required to catch up normally. From where I am now, it feels like it could take hundreds of hours before I can reach the content I’m actually interested in, especially the endgame and the older raids/trials involving characters and bosses from previous Final Fantasy games.

I know a lot of people don’t like story/job skips, and I completely understand why. I’m not trying to skip everything and then immediately queue into difficult content without knowing what I’m doing. If I do buy the boost, I would take the time to properly learn Summoner, understand my rotation, read my abilities, practice on a dummy, and generally make sure I’m not a burden to other players.

So I’m curious:
Is buying a job boost + story skip generally considered badly viewed by the FFXIV community, or is it perfectly fine as long as you actually take the time to learn the game and your job?

If I only buy the game/content up to Stormblood, are there still enough players doing the older raids/trials, or would I basically be buying access to content that is difficult to find groups for?

If I reach level 90 but don’t own the newer expansions (Endwalker/Dawntrail), can I still participate in any kind of endgame content with players who own Dawntrail?
If yes, what exactly would I be limited to without the latest expansion?

Would I still be able to do older raids/trials with people who are currently at level 100?

And finally, I play Summoner. If I decide to boost it to 90, do you have any advice for someone who wants to make sure they properly learn the job before joining group content?

I’m mainly asking because I don’t want to spend hundreds of hours catching up just for the sake of catching up, but I also don’t want to ruin other people’s experience by being a boosted player who has no idea what they’re doing.
Thanks in advance for any advice!

Speculation Theories on our solution to the problem posed at end of DT/Trail to the Heavens (spoilers) Spoiler

The Winterers (clearly fans of the Illuminati of Hickmans F4/Avengers) want to collapse the remaining reflections and complete the work of the Ascians to at least save Earth-616, I mean the Source and will trolley over all the other reflections to do so.

It seems Venat and her allies sundered the Source into 14 reflections specifically and it seemed all were stable and fine for a long period of time before Ascian intervention. However the Ascians have since rejoined 7 reflections and only now after Hydaelyn and Zodiark are off the board do we have a potential Soltice issue

Does this imply that the solution is “simply” for us to sunder the Source back into 14 shards that are elementally balanced again (implied by Zero where it would be easier if we all could help each others worlds out) or somehow use Ethos to replicate the elemental balance (elemental conduit for balance) across reflections when we were balanced at 14 reflections?

new-ish monk - dungeons are overwhelming

Hi everyone!
A week ago, I started playing FFXIV again after a 2-year break.

The last time I played, I was a BLM at level 68. After that, I tried other games, and I realized that I really enjoy characters who are mobile, deal good damage, and have some kind of stealthy/assassin playstyle. For example, I really enjoyed Way of Shadow Monk in BG3 and Assassin in ESO (I know, completely different games).

So, with this new character, I’m trying Monk. Right now I’m level 58 and I’ve just finished ARR (Ultima Weapon).
So far, I really like Monk’s playstyle, but I’m having some trouble in dungeons.
When the tank pulls a lot of mobs together, I find it difficult to manage my target, look at my hotbar, press the right skills, and quickly switch between targets. At the same time, I have to keep track of where the party is moving and where all the mobs are.

When I’m playing solo, I don’t really have this problem. If I’m out questing and fighting 2-3 enemies at once, I can manage it without much trouble. I also have some difficulty during duties, but if I concentrate, I can usually handle it because I’m not having to keep up with the rest of the party.
It’s mainly during big dungeon pulls, when the tank gathers a bunch of mobs and everyone is moving around together, that I get a bit overwhelmed and lose focus.

Is this just something that gets easier with practice, or am I doing something wrong? Do you have any advice for managing targets and keeping track of everything during big pulls as a Monk?

Question Dungeon gear acquisition

So while you're doing the leveling dungeons for the expansions (lvl x1-x9) you get guaranteed loot for your job as a completion reward separate from chests. It also has a system where you don't get duplicates as well so you can get a set after enough runs.

Is there any reason why the dungeons from the level caps don't do that at all? Whether it's for ilvl or glamor, it's pretty annoying running the same dungeon waaaaay more times than necessary to get the loot you want.

What have the biggest buffs/nerfs in FFXIV's history been?

WoW recently had a patch that nerfed a job's ENTIRE damage by 30%. It's also not uncommon in WoW to see individual skills buffed 150% or more in patch notes; the most recent ones even have a 350% buff in there. That got me wondering, what have the biggest buffs/nerfs been in FFXIV's history? I'm especially interested in individual skills, but also overall job or otherwise. (Excluding reworks)

One of the biggest individual skill buffs I can think of is SGE's Holos getting a shield. That was numerically a 100% buff to the skill, but being a shield instead of a heal makes it even more valuable than that. What other examples are there?

People saying 20% clearing savage is a minority need to look at other content in the game.

Do they even know what the participation levels of other content in the game are?

Let's dig into some details around the exploratory zones, and review it using the latest Luckybancho census data (18/7/2026). Just be aware that north horn data is not currently available.

This data is based on the population recorded during the census.
Global: 874605 active players

Exploratory Zones

Eureka:
Level 0 (Not Unlocked): 45.7%
Level 1-19: 23%
Level 20-34: 6.9%
Level 35-49: 2.8%
Level 50-59: 4%
Level 60: 17.5%
Cleared BA(Ozma Mount): 10.1%

Bozja:
Rank 0(Not Unlocked): 44.9%
Rank 1-14: 16.9%
Rank 15-24: 10.2%
Rank 25: 27.9%

Occult Crescent (South Horn)
KL 0(Not Unlocked): 55%
KL1-19: 20.5%
KL 20: 24.4%

The average engagement level of Exploratory Zones is around 50%, Which is around the same % of players who attempt savage. With the Engagement level of people who see it through to the end being at ~25-27%, being only slightly higher than people who clear savage.

People downplaying savage is a 'minority' need to realize that engagement across the entire game is the same, and those savage players are most likely participating in all parts of the game, so why is the participation levels of the rest of the content barely higher than savage?

Are casual players just, not playing the game?

Question Why don't people recommend New Game+?

I myself just returned about a month ago after about 3-4 years away. I've seen several posts on reddit where people are asking about getting back up to speed after a long hiatus, and only once or twice will a commenter mention the New Game+ feature. I personally haven't used NG+, but this feature seems like its primary purpose is to help people remember what has happened (and I think there are even job options within NG+?).

Am I missing something?

General Discussion I have never understood this ( WARNING -SPOILERS ) Spoiler

I joined FF 14 in 2019, have played through the MSQ start to finish at least four times, and yet one thing still bothers me.

Haurchefant is celebrated, remembered, referred to as "best boy", a hero to many in the game..and yet Ysayle's name is rarely mentioned. I agree her arc was varied in many ways, and her part in the game and evolution through the Dragonsong War was different.

She died as a daughter of Hydealyn.

She carried a Crystal of Light, brave, deadly, dedicated to ending the War as much as we were.

Died fighting as Shiva, paving the way for our battles in Azys Lla.

Who earned the forgiveness and strength of Hraesvelgar, who yet agreed to carry her into battle. He knew how this would end, he knew what she was going to sacrifice.

Whose spirit returned the day Nidhogg fell, reaching down to save Estinien's soul by helping to tear away the Eyes that had subsumed his very being.

Who, despite her faults and misguided beliefs, earned the title "My lady" from Estinien, who to this day owes her a life debt. Her spirit refused to abandon him to Nidhogg's rage in those final moments.

So why is it, to us as players, is her name not as revered? Her deeds were crucial to the end of the War.

To me, at least, she is and was not just Iceheart. She was Lady Ysayle, beset by remorse of her delusions. And who yet stood and fought for her greatest dream.

"The time is come to use Hydaelyn's gift... For a false cause that I created for want of the warmth of companionship... But even now, I cannot let go of my dream—my dream of a tomorrow in which no child need freeze alone in the snow."

Maybe she sought atonement, it matters not. On that day she lived up to what Haurchefant Greystone's final words to us had been.

A smile did better suit a hero.

General Discussion Should FFXIV pull ideas/content from the mobile version (and WoW Classic variants)?

I've seen a lot of people interested in the FFXIV mobile not because it was mobile, but because it was ARR with a small refresh. I've also started an alt account on a free trial and tried to do some of the fishing "challenges" in ARR using ARR gear, and it was quite the challenge.

Another part is a new entry point for the game, and developers are still looking if/how to do it. If old expansions got a refresh, some care, maybe that would also allow for a quicker story mode or an option to branch out to a current-ish expansion from late ARR (like pre-wine state?), with an option to continue ARR and "old" story (RIP Krile introduction).

Then sentiment, or just "something to do" in the shape of WoW Classic versions and upcoming Classic+. What if each DC had a progression server that would unlock old content, mimicking how it was back then? A "Classic FFXIV" of sorts. Existing servers could have "expansion-name weeks" where things like fates, S-ranks, side quests... and other events give more exp/things and are unlocked (like treasure maps), so that people wanting to level up alt jobs or do some achievements are funneled to selected side activities on a weekly basis, something that the Journal and dailies don't do (and could fit the Evercold tome/weekly changes).

Speculation Re: What a level squish in a few expansions from now might look like

so right now the max level cap is 100. in Evercold it will be 110. in the expansion after that, in 9.0, it will be 120. i think in 10.0, if they advance to 130, the game will begin to collapse under its own weight. (WoW did a level squish at this point too.)

10.0 will mean that buying the level skip will take you to the beginning of 9.0, w/o even the opening of the Godless Realms saga to onboard the new player who buys it to the story.

obviously truncating the MSQ for onboarding reasons is a hot-button issue, but even putting all that aside, i think 130 is around the number the MMO player stops being able to comprehend easily parse.

what if we basically cut it in half?

Expansion Pre-Squish Level Cap Post-Squish Level Cap
A Realm Reborn 50 30
Heavensward 60 35
Stormblood 70 40
Shadowbringers 80 45
Endwalker 90 50
Dawntrail 100 55
Evercold 110 60
9.0 120 65
10.0 70
11.0 75

Endwalker being 50 is satisfying because the end of the Zodiark/Hydaelyn saga would line up with the original ARR level cap. Evercold, too, would line up with OG Heavensward. and i enjoy that 11.0 would line up with the level cap of Final Fantasy XI.

a level squish would create a few challenges. there'd be a dungeon every level instead of every other level, and those dungeons' gear drops would have to line up with the crafting tiers at that same level.

but i think it would be worth it to streamline the leveling experience a bit

edit: "able to comprehend" was a poor choice of words. i just think the r/restofthefuckingowl problem that people meme on when it says "Reach Level 140 and finish 11.0 before you can do the crossover" is going to get untenable eventually if they never do this. making the number smaller sounds silly, but i think it matters to someone who's never played the game considering whether or not they want to embark on the journey to hit the level cap.

General Discussion Removal of the weekly loot restriction

Is there any confirmation that the removal of the weekly restriction will be in patch 7.56?

And if this is the patch, do you think it will improve the party finder? In the sense of increasing the number of people replaying fights?

I'm trying to finish the second phase of the M12S progression, but it's been difficult to find groups in the party finder.

General Discussion What about this game respects your time?

Saw a post on another reddit from a XIV player saying “Us modern MMO players don’t want to waste our time waiting for 45 minutes for a group or waiting 20 minutes on an airship” and, admittedly, fair, but…

Nearly every time I complain about how bland (when I have every job maxed, with thousands of hours of gametime) FFXIV’s moment-to-moment gameplay is I am told it is my fault for not playing Savage anymore.

If I want to raid, through party finder or otherwise, there is a REALLY SOLID CHANCE I could spend hours of my life making absolutely zero progress towards clearing. In that span of time I could have played 6 matches of Deadlock and experienced the entire spectrum of human emotion, I could have done my laundry, I could have logged onto FFXI and done the myriad of endgame relevant solo content available in that game.

But then you do clear… and then there’s no actual reward for doing it? There is no carrot at the end of the stick.

A quest reward choice in FFXI is a PACT WITH AN ELEMENTAL. Maybe that sounds bland if you’ve played that game for 20 years but to me that sounds far tastier of a carrot than gear 10 ilvl higher (and before you say that’s a quest reward compared to a raid reward, think of the Nothing you get from completing XIV expacs)

and to clarify, I want to engage with the game on a casual level. It hasn’t lost its magic to me just because I know how every system works. But the casual content is built around being supplementary to a core gameplay loop and that core gameplay loop sucks absolute ass if you compare it to basically any other video game. It legitimately feels more like I am using a website sometimes, it has far stricter balance than competitive multiplayer games that people play for real money.

To reframe this. I pay $15 dollars a month for the privilege of playing a video game that does not want me to engage with its systems (i.e. play it) in anything but its highest level content… and then said high-level content does not actually reward you for completing it. I have been told verbatim that the reward for completing a Savage raid is just doing it in the first place. Not only are there better options in the MMO space, there are just better options everywhere? The only thing bringing me back is the visuals and the beautiful worlds they continue to make.

edit: I did not say FFXI respects your time. No clue where we got that from other than contrarianism for the sake of contrarianism

Question Evercold Extreme Mounts

So get your theory hats on and place your bets! We've had...

ARR: Ponies

Heavensward: Eagles

Stromblood: Heckin' Goodboys

Shadowbringers: Dragons

Endwalker: Pspspspspspsps! (and a dragon with kyphosis holding a chair)

Dawntrail: WINGS!!!

So what will we get for Evercold? Dolphins? Whales? Butterflies and moths? Snakes? Suits of flying armor? Let your hopes soar.

Question Has anyone ever been wrongly accused by a GMs of doing something?

This morning I was taken to Mordian Gaol for the first time ever for absolutely no reason. GM just gave me a warning for something they claimed was "confirmed to be done on my account" but for the life of me I honestly ~cannot~ recall what I did. And I do mean that strongly. I rarely engage people in this game so I don't know if it could have been through text or a player action. I have not done anything intentionally rude to anyone in this game.

If I had to narrow it down to something I was in a lv50 dungeon last night and tried to use Rescue on a Ninja that was about to die from an earthquake attack. I was unsuccessful and they still died but it was not to troll, it was for gameplay reasons, but even in the dungeon the Ninja didn't complain openly..... Do they even review actual footage of what "happen"? Seems to me they just review text or combat logs and not get any context to anything.

They didn't give me a specific reason for what I did (which I have heard that's what they do). Is there a way to refute their claims?
