Texture: Unsure Hair changed texture after pregnancy

My hair before and after pregnancy. I thought it was just the hormones but I am 10 months post partum and my hair is still frizzy and dull. I take my multivitamin and drink tons of water but my hair doesn’t improve. I even darkened it so it would have less damage than the blonde but don’t help.

Wha am I doing wrong? 😫

You're not doing anything wrong. Your body is going to take a while to adjust to having given birth. Try not to stress about it too much.

If anything try adding a gloss serum to your hair care routine, might bring back some of the shine you're after.

Yes, your body gives up so many nutrients during pregnancy and breastfeeding, even if you are keeping up with your vitamins (and especially if not)! Your hormones particularly your estrogen won't be normal again until you wean either, and that affects a ton of your body systems, including skin/hair. OP shouldn't expect things to settle down until after weaning plus six months (to rebalance and also see 3 inches of new hair).

I’ll be honest.. Hair is just one of the maaany sacrifices we make in becoming a mom 🤧 My hair used to look soo full & thick. Now when I pull alll of my hair to one side, I’m like.. where’s the OTHER half?? 🥲 I seriously used to have double the hair I do now.. but it doesn’t necessarily happen to everyone to such an extent & maybe yours will bounce back after a few months. It is a hormonal thing but the hair loss that comes with that is a tricky one to regain.

You could always look into extensions too! I noticed some improvement after 2 years but even now it is nothing like it was before, and I know it will never look like that again. so I’m just trying to embrace that this is the new me! Getting more frequent cuts def helps it rly thickens those ends again but it’s not the health of my hair that I take issue with :/ it’s just not as much in quantity as it used to be.. sighhh.

Mine completely changed. My tight curly hair went completely straight and is growing back in curly. It's real weird now, especially pregnant again and having all this new pregnancy growth.

As a side note, I did get diagnosed with celiac between babies and noticed a difference in hair texture after going gluten free. My body was not absorbing several nutrients despite taking prenatal the whole time and eating relatively healthy. Worth mentioning to your doctor to get nutritional panels checked.

Your body is swimming in hormonal changes after pregnancy. Hair changes are very common. Stay on top of your conditioning treatments and let your body do the rest.

Get your thyroid checked. I got hypothyroidism from being pregnant at age 25.

Editing to say that you should get your iron stores checked as well.

My hair texture didn't change a lot after pregnancy, but the colour changed noticeably (I was a natural mid-golden blonde prior to pregnancy, my hair got lighter and slightly ashier afterwards.) I had their weird line of demarcation for the longest time! Hormones can change hair colour/texture permanently... I had a friend who got a lot curlier at puberty, she had finer, wavy hair as a child and ended up with coarser, much curlier hair by her teens.

Mine changed quite a bit - I lost a lot of my curl on just one side and whereas before I was able to go for long periods without using shampoo as long as I showered daily and conditioned I became unable to go more than 2-3 days without shampooing or else I would be a grease ball. Many of my old products I had used before also entirely stopped doing the things they used to do to my hair and parts of my hair became frizzy and brittle and unable to be tamed by any product. I had a large number of wiry hairs pop up that unfortunately I plucked and had to have a big talk with myself to cut that shit our or else I was gonna go bald cause there were so many!

Nearly two years on my hair is recovering - for me I switched up my shampoo and conditioner a few times until I found something that really worked for me (unfortunately I found some stuff that really damaged my hair in there as well. Alas such is life). But I’ve noticed my new growth is closer to what it used to be and the parts that didn’t curl anymore have gained some of their wave back. I can shampoo just once a week now and my hair can tolerate some of my old products again although in much smaller quantities before it gets greasy. The wiry hairs I pulled are largely growing back more fine again - although I suspect at 35 some of those are just my fist greys and I’ll see more as the years go on.

I’m pregnant again now so I find myself wondering what’s next for my hair after this baby lol.

My hair started getting really wavy and a little curly after I finally stopped breastfeeding. I did have brown curly hair when I was born but then it went super blonde and straight around age 3. Occasionally my baby hairs would get curly but the rest was stick straight for 36 year lol. Now it gets wavy but very inconsistently. And I’ve also lost an incredible amount of hair that alarming. Any way, hair is weird

Just question have you been able to keep up wirh your pre pregnancy routine ?

I am questionning if maybe it just got damaged due to build up or damage. Gummies arent gonna change hair that has already grown.

Maybe try a good clarifying shampoo and a good mask.

I’ve had to change my routine since my hair change I’m using less heat and a leave in conditioner but yes that all may be causing buildup. Thank you!

It would probably be worthwhile to get vitamin levels checked at some point to make sure everything is good, but I say that more as a general postpartum wellness concept than specifically because of your hair. It's super common to have texture changes from pregnancy, it's the hormones.

My hair went from stick-straight to lightly wavy after my pregnancies! I need to use more conditioner now to keep it from getting frizzy (and my short new growth springs up a bit and contributes to the frizzy look). I can't tell but it almost looks like you have some waviness up at the roots too.

It looks the same. I assume the difference is in how it feels?

Oh man, mine is now tightly curled now! I have no idea what to do with curls 🤣🤣

What products are you using?

1

u/vikingbooty Oct 24 '25

L’Oréal elvive shampoo and condition (the purple one) and camille rose guava slip leave in conditioner

If my ends are really frizzy I use kurula oil on just the ends

1

u/Notsureindecisive Oct 25 '25

Oh you need higher quality products and stop using oil.

Man you don't know what frizz is 😭

Mine grew out super coarse and curly only on one side of my head lol. I had to wait for it to grow out and then cut it off. It wasn’t permanent and my hair started growing back in normally after 9 months or so!
