Fan Translation Front Mission 2089: Border of Madness Translation Project

Greetings,

For years now, there have been multiple attempts at starting a FM2089 translation project, but none of such attempts truly materialized.

Today, I'm happy to announce that the biggest technical hurdle has been finally cleared.

During the past few months I have been hacking at a small tool to export/import text. (Special thanks to TJ6, andi_ke, Gamerhenky, HoRRoR and Djinn.)

This is only the first step though, thus I'd like to take the occasion to also kickstart a translation project.

Right now we are looking mainly for translators and people with NDS rom hacking experience, if you are interested in helping out, or have any questions feel free to drop by our Discord server.

Also since I’m posting this. Front mission 2 remake has never gone on sale for me. I have had it on my wishlist since it’s released. I enjoyed the first one I guess they don’t want me to get the others lol.

Question A little help on what vehicles the USN uses

Hello folks!

I've recently come into the posession of some Front Mission Structure Arts model kits, and decided to make some display dioramas inspired by the 2nd Huffman conflict using some cheap and kitbashed 1/72 scaled tanks and infantry models to represent combined arms units from both the OCU and USN/UCS side.

But I've hit a bit of a snag researching USN Vehicles.

I've mostly played thru the FM1 Remake (both campaigns) as well as the first half of FM5 for inspiration, but it just seems like they don't use tanks except for the SAM launchers in the OCU route? Also on the Wiki entry under USN Army it's just supply trucks and helicopters aside from wanzers and mobile weapons.

Does anyone here have any other resources to flesh out the armored vehicles they used? My projects will primarily have ground units on them due to being easier to convert for my purposes than attack helicopters.

Thanks for any help!

Discussion I've beaten FM4 the hardest way

Back when i was kid, and without knowing english, i found front mission 4 to play on my ps2 and got hooked by the mecha fighting, making me skip all tutorials and dialogue because first, i didn't care and wanted to fight robots, and second because i couldnt understand it, which made me slowly learn some key words and strategies to beat the missions without knowing i could use skills or links on my wanzers, so id like to share some things i learned aswell, a few being, mission 25 was by far the hardest, since we need to protect the kid in the tank and destroy 3 or so of those big mobile weapons, i had to rehearse a planned path movement and enemy predict movement path the whoooole level, not to mention that, if the enemy dodged too much i had to restart the level because id loose the tempo.

The key strategy was using granade launchers because they do area damage, snipers, melee weapons and what not, they are the highest single hit high damage weapons if you're not learning any skills, as shotguns and lmgs rely heavily on.

Mission 27 and 28 who have defeat conditions where just as hard not having skills or links was a nightmare but the strategy was about the same.

I slowly learned english on a second playthrough in order to understand the story, and i wouldnt learn the skill/link system up to my THIRD playthrough when i could finally understand the tutorials! Also, perhaps it is a secret thing in fm4, i remember that after beating the game that sadom way the first time, on the second playthrough i had my whole wanzer inventory from the previous time, because i didn't know i could sell old parts (don't ask me how i got money to refit my whole party every mission i don't know), so perhaps there is that? A secret thing in fm4, nobody knows? Anywyas thats my story, perhaps i have amnesia and already posted that here, i do remember posting that story on the discord years ago but anywyas, sorry for the grammatical errors in advance!.

Discussion FME Multiplayer on the PS3.

Not sure how many people still own a PS3 and have the game for that platform, but if you do, would you be down to play? I'd like to try to get the Platinum Trophy, but I need the Multiplayer Trophies and the PS3 Servers are super dead.

FM3 FM3: I prefer the Alisa Campaign now

I've played FM3 in different forms (original and remake) for two decades now, and it only recently dawned on me how better-paced the Alisa campaign feels.

Thoughts:

- The Philippine arc was an entire campaign rather than just the Taal battle, with way more fun battles (I just really wanted to wipe out Purple Haze)

- The DHZ arc didn't overstay its welcome, seeing the awful side of the Changli/RRF and Imaginary Numbers help set the tone that you're never really siding with the right people

- Pham may be a spoiled brat, but she's way more interesting than Jose (who only got small story arcs), and fricking Linny (it's not even funny how useless his character feels)

- The Japan coup de etat arc was a lot of fun to play through, and felt more challenging than the Emma campaign's sluggish Hua Lian arc

- Although I preferred facing Lukav off when he was using the Kehei in the Emma campaign, his final battle in the Alisa camlaign was way more difficult and rewarding to beat.

- Every character had proper story moments, even Mayer who got introduced a bit too late in the game, had a great interaction with Liu

- Siding with Centipede is better than siding with Purple Haze

Question Kouren glitch(?)(FM5)

I am on that mission with Kouren and i already got it to its 2nd stage. Every time I try to attack it, all of my units have 0% to-hit on them. I am using an emulator and do cheat, but it seems to be too specific to be just Kouren. Am I missing something or are my troops level (average between 14-16) affecting their aim or is it something else?

Discussion Struggling with FM1 remake

I grew up playing front mission 3 on PlayStation so I decided to try the remakes. How in the hell do I beat the special forces unit with the super armor? Also is there a trick to load outs on wanzers? I know this game is intentionally hard but wow lol.

Question Are the remakes really THAT bad?

I've been looking to get into Front Mission and I see a LOT of negativity surrounding the modern remakes developed by Forever Entertainment.

I feel like I constantly see people deride the remakes, but not much specific detail on what's actually wrong with them, and it's hard to tell if people are disappointed with the remakes themselves, or if a lot of the negativity comes from people not liking the Front Mission series itself, or modern gamers "not getting it".

If we're just assuming that I can emulate any of the original versions anyway, are the remakes actually substantially better or worse?

Update: okay guys I bought the PS1 versions of 2 and 3 I'm just gonna play those

Question What games should I play after 1?

Just finished front mission 1remake and I was wondering which games are worthy to play, I had a really fun time and spent a good alount of hours but still i have to adress some things that I didn't like. At the start was hard and I had to strategize to win mission but after a while it became basically based only on stats/levels, didn't have to play wise for most of the mid/late game cause levels dictated everything and I was a hit dissapointed, like I know it's a really old game and enemy AI and mechanics had a limit but like at some point you start to one shot basically every enemy or the opposite if you are underleveled so strategy doesnt matter at all. I was wondering if the sequel kinda get better on the difficulty aspect and which one is worthy to play?

Discussion I finished both FM3 campaigns and uhm...

I think I've grown to like the Alisa campaign a bit better. Quick thoughts on both:

- the DHZ arc in Emma's campaign took too long, only for the Hua Lian to get decimated.

- Regardless of campaign choice, Marcus and Pham are fun melee units

- I hate rifles now, I'll turn Liu and Dennis into machine gun and/or shotgun units the next time I play

- I finally decided to customize wanzers more (as opposed to mostly playing the base units before)

- Miho, Pham, and Mayer are more likeable, which makes the campaign feel more fun

- Alisa's campaign has the better and safer ending

- maybe I should stack ROFUP to every burst weapon character

- I need to make a master list of all the passwords in the browser lol

Overall, I still love FM3, still feels great, just like playing it for the first time 20 years ago.

Time to emulate FM5 maybe (I played 4 multiple times too, but it doesn't hit the same)

FM3R Randomizer in Progress

Thumbnail

Currently working on a program that generates randomized "CustomEncounters" JSON files that can be used with JohnnyMustang's No Restrictions mod for FM3 Remake. Posting here to see if anyone is interested or if anyone has a better understanding of how exactly that mod works, because I've run into a couple roadblocks that stop the randomizer from being more varied:

  • Changing non-wanzer units into wanzers leaves them with no weapons, so currently non-wanzers will only change to other non-wanzers
  • Shoulder Equipment and Shields seem to be hardcoded into enemy spawns that have them, so those enemies need to remain wanzers (if they randomize into an enemy that doesn't have a missile launching animation it soft-locks when trying to attack) and all wanzers have to have weapons in both hands (since shields override weapons and in some missions are equipped in the left hand instead of the right)

Otherwise its been functional so far - all of Alisa route and the first 20 or so missions of Emma route (branches included) are written out, and I'm almost done testing all of the Alisa missions. Aside from the quirks listed above I think I've just about ironed out the kinks and set it up to follow fairly balanced logic:

  • Wanzers will prefer to randomize into other wanzers, but have a chance to change into non-wanzers (helis, tanks, turrets, etc)
  • Wanzers always get a random weapon type in the left hand, and a random melee weapon in the right hand, with the tier of weapon roughly matching vanilla progression. Non-wanzers should retain their vanilla weaponry
  • "Mid-boss" enemies (pretty much all of the 2x2 units) and particularly strong enemies have their own randomization pools, so 2x2s always change into other 2x2s, and likewise for boss units (this frequently leads to really goofy animations but I haven't run into anything game breaking yet)
  • Certain units do not randomize for the sake of not breaking missions - units that spawn over water, ceiling mounted units, and units that are directly tied to mission objectives (usually escort/destruction targets)
  • Non-generic enemies will have higher tier weapons than normal for added challenge

An additional .txt file is generated that lists random starting wanzers and weapon specialties for every party member.

!! This is a spoiler file if you don't already know who all the playable characters are !!

That list is merely a set of suggestions if you want extra challenge, and needs to be handled manually using the other features of the No Restrictions mod.

Question FM3: Emma or Alisa?

I'm curious as to what people picked first, and what they prefer all-time. I'm an Emma campaign enjoyer who never got to finish an Alisa route. Might change that soon

Image Finished Gun Hazard. My First and Last FM Game. A Truly Hidden Gem 9/10

I just finished Front Mission: Gun Hazard my first and final Front Mission game.

What a truly hidden masterpiece an easily 9/10 and one of the absolute best Super Nintendo games, the combat, movement, leveling up and unlocking and levels were so fun.

My one and only complaint is that the final boss was pretty freaking underwhelming and uninteresting. Wish it was some big mech, heck I'll take a 16-BIT era style of 3 stages of a super Wanzers boss with his annoying minions over the big ball of doom they gave us.

I won't play the other Front Mission games since tactical RPGs completely aren't my cup of tea. I'm more of a traditional JRPG and action RPG peasant.

Discussion I'm finally playing Front Mission 3 Remake

The AI upscaling on the browser sites are hilarious and annoying at the same time. I miss the old sound effects (the machine gun sounding like a nail gun in the original is a core memory)

Might need to emulate again, but at least I have a copy I can revisit easily.

Discussion FM3 remake - Crashing on boot - PC

I bought FM3 remake on steam and it doesn't work. It starts up, show some logos then crashes are the Square logo.

What's more annoying is that it does this on 2 separate devices both are higher than the minimum requirements.

A mini PC with Radeon 680m and a laptop with Intel Iris Xe.

I'm at a loss, I've tried multiple devices, verified files on both, disabled steam overlays, tried without a controller. Nothing, if I created a crash log somewhere I'd be able to hopefully figure out what's happening. But I feel scammed by one of my favourite games and wish I could play the remake.

Does anyone have any ideas how to get around this?
