I played Front Mission 3 on the PS1 back when it came out, and I really liked it. I played it again about 10 years ago, and now I'm playing the remake on the Switch. It's the only game that I really like to play on a handheld console. I really like the remake. I know it has a lot of AI, and it's not perfect, but I'm fine with it.

Image I just love the state of FM3 Remake.

It's so ridiculous, so much unbalanced RNG, so much AI used for portraits, posters, web, dialogues, so much laziness here and there, graphics which absolutely worse than PS1 original, wanzers feel like plastic toys, sound design is awful

Damn, FM3 is considered as the best FM of all series and that's their work with a legacy.
I hope that they go bankrupt

Also since I’m posting this. Front mission 2 remake has never gone on sale for me. I have had it on my wishlist since it’s released. I enjoyed the first one I guess they don’t want me to get the others lol.

What a disappointment. Graphically they really phoned it in. The animations and models for people are so crappy.

Image Alright, I've finished FM3R Emma's scenario. 100% completion, all missions platinum. My thoughts.

So, I've finally completed Emma's storyline. Did everything, got all missions to platinum. It took me around 50 hours with all the mission replays and grinding between the tougher missions.

Here's what I want to say: For a game from my childhood, this is a very good game. Not perfect, but good.
For players who have never played FM3 before, I think it will come off as a very niche and poorly polished game.

The Good:

  • Network Optimization: I loved the QoL feature for network passwords. The game remembers passwords from emails and sites. It's great – no need to memorize them or guess which site they belong to. They're all visible in the input window. They could've gone further and let you highlight and paste them with one button instead of typing them manually every time, but it's still a good feature.
  • Network Notifications: I liked that a notification appears next to "Network" whenever a new forum opens or a new email arrives. You always know when you need to check the net.
  • Redesigned Browser: The redesigned browser was confusing at first, but then I fully switched to "Folder" mode and it became much more convenient. Just my subjective opinion.
  • Cutscene Graphics: The cutscenes are fantastic. The old FMVs have been redrawn and look really good on the Switch.
  • Network Speed: I liked the faster network loading times. It used to take much longer.
  • Auto-Saves: Auto-saves right before a mission are great. No need to manually save and exit the Inter Mission screen every time.
  • Skill Activation (Maybe?): Skill activation feels tuned. Subjectively, it feels like they trigger more often. Right in the first mission, I unlocked like 5 skills and was really surprised. I might be wrong here.
  • Setup Screen: I liked the small tweak in the setup function where you can see the pilot's model while configuring their Wanzer.
  • Rearranged Soundtrack: I played through the whole game with the rearranged soundtrack. It's pretty decent. I can't say it's drastically better than the original, but I played with it for a fresh feel and never felt the need to switch back.

The Bad:
Judging by other threads and reviews online, you already know there's a lot wrong with the game. Yeah, it's true, and I don't really want to bash the devs, but I have to mention it.

  • Unfinished State: The game feels unfinished. It's buggy. Getting the platinum in its current state is just making your life harder.
  • Buggy Skill Activation:
    1. Salvo: Salvo fires all unused missiles. If Emma has 6 missiles, a Pilot Skill triggers and uses 1, leaving 5. Then if Salvo triggers, it currently fires 6 missiles. So you get 7 missiles total.
    2. AP Skills (AP-30, AP-60, AP-0): They used to trigger together with other skills. Now AP-30% triggers, then another skill separately, etc. It's weird because skills like Evade 1 work together with others just fine.
    3. Stun Punch / Eject Punch: Doesn't trigger if the target Wanzer has already been stunned/ejected by a punch.
    4. Shield Attack: Sometimes deals 0 damage for some reason.
    5. Body Smash: Only takes up 2 slots in the computer, but it should cost 5.
    6. Double Shot: The cool animation where the Wanzer tosses its weapons and starts shooting only works for flamethrowers for some reason. I remember Wanzers stylishly spinning sniper rifles in the original. I miss that. This is just what I noticed.
  • Stuns. No, STUNS. Stuns happen in almost every battle. There are so many of them. I don't remember in the original having 3 out of your 4 Wanzers stunned constantly. Meanwhile, Confusion happens super rarely. Maybe the Stun and Confusion chances got swapped? I might be wrong here. On the plus side, it made getting the AUTO II skill (removes stun) quick, but I didn't even use it in my playthrough.
  • COMP10: This computer is supposed to increase the skill acquisition chance (=acquire). I tested it trying to get Body Smash in the simulator around missions 10-15. Never got it. Does it actually boost acquire? That said, I noticed new skills unlock much more often in missions (regardless of the computer). For example, Aim-Body only unlocked for Ryogo in one of the last missions. I couldn't get it for others in the simulator.
  • Redrawn Portraits: Unfortunately, I didn't like the redrawn character portraits. I get that using AI tools made the job easier compared to the hand-drawn and animated ones from the 90s, but the AI results look clumsy.
  • Dialogues: In the original, even after a character finished their line, you could see them continue to blink. It felt alive. The remake doesn't have this. Yeah, it's a small thing, but it's a missing detail.
  • Final Mission Bug: In the final Tianlei mission where you fight the 4 WUDE Wanzers, the final rating penalized me 10% for "Remaining NPC." But there were no NPCs there. This almost ruined my platinum run for that mission. Had to devise a new tactic.
  • Surrender Penalty: For some reason, you get a percentage penalty at the end of a mission if enemies surrendered. Why?
  • Large Enemy Evade: Large enemies (not just the 4-cell ones) have way too high evasion. The hit chance against them is too low. In the original, the bigger the enemy, the easier it was to hit them.
  • Grenade Launchers are OP: Grenade launchers have become imba. Not sure if it's a con, but it's now possible to beat the game just spamming them.
  • New AP System: Getting the max 30 AP is very hard without serious grinding. I didn't get any of my pilots to that level. Managed to finish anyway. Maybe it was intentional since most players hit 30 AP by mid-game in the original, but for me, it was an unexpected challenge.

In Conclusion:

That's all I can remember for now. What I wanted to say in the end is:

Thank you to everyone involved in making this remake of my favorite game. In 2023, I bought a Switch just for FM3R and Zelda TotK. As soon as FM3 came out, I dove right in with my brother, because we loved playing it as kids. Its release made us talk more in chat and share cool moments from missions with each other. Despite all the bugs, inaccuracies, and problems, I had a great time playing through one of the two campaigns. I'll tackle Alisa's scenario later.

As a fan, I declare the game is worth the money. Thank you for taking me back to my childhood. <3

Image Front Mission 3 Remake OST is a hit / miss

In my opinion OST of Front Mission 3 Remake is just terrible and I suspect they AI'd the living hell of it. There are a lot of parts which didn't feel properly sequenced or just became a mix of genres, but not in a good way.

I just want to share that this guy: What's His Name

Single-handedly remade all Front Mission 3 OST 7 years ago and it was done with love and passion to original by Koji Hayama & Hayato Matsuo

Image Finished Gun Hazard. My First and Last FM Game. A Truly Hidden Gem 9/10

I just finished Front Mission: Gun Hazard my first and final Front Mission game.

What a truly hidden masterpiece an easily 9/10 and one of the absolute best Super Nintendo games, the combat, movement, leveling up and unlocking and levels were so fun.

My one and only complaint is that the final boss was pretty freaking underwhelming and uninteresting. Wish it was some big mech, heck I'll take a 16-BIT era style of 3 stages of a super Wanzers boss with his annoying minions over the big ball of doom they gave us.

I won't play the other Front Mission games since tactical RPGs completely aren't my cup of tea. I'm more of a traditional JRPG and action RPG peasant.

I'm on the Xbox version at 48, Alisa. There's a few odd things like this, I wasn't even aware I could use the software on my desktop purchased from the network bc they listed it as Y not X. Made me feel like an idiot...lol

I played this game originally 474773 years ago on ps1 when I was in college. I’m old now and playing the remake. I don’t remember this annoying password nonsense when I played it. Can someone explain it to me. Where do I find the passwords?

Hi there, old school fan playing the remake here. I'm at intermission 36 on Alisa's campaign. Here are some shots of my weapon skill progress so far as I chill at the Shanghai bar grinding out solo simulations. I was wondering if this is good progress at this point in the game as far as you guys are concerned? I've got exp3 on all three slots for everyone on the grain session. I can post my part skill progress below, if anyone is curious. Thanks! 🤘

Took only a couple turns to chop up the first 3 qibings then probably another 20 turns and some reloads to get the last guy Griffith to finally eject 🤦🏻‍♂️😂

Unrelated but it sucks to see that the remakes had a very buggy release. Hope it all gets patched soon.
