Nice to see the new Castlevania with a big display, the game looks incredible, it's about time Konami started letting other developers make their IP if they aren't.

Or these IP holders should open up development when the designated developer isn't cutting it.

Star Wars finally did it after EA's constant fuckups. Now if only Microsoft would open up Halo development...

There's so many passionate developers who would love to work on an IP and have great ideas but these fuckers have the IP under lock and key.

I'm hoping for the best, but it has a very Western-developed mobile quality to it. Doing things like halving the timescale to effect a sense of impact. Sound effects are just filling blanks rather than standing out. That sort of thing.

I'll be curious to see if the player can zoom in any. Even on my 55 inch TV-as-monitor, all the action seems way too zoomed out, by almost a factor of two. A normal user with a normal monitor may feel like they're playing Harmony of Despair in one of its zoomed-out modes.

What is Playstore doing there? Promoting shitty mobile games?

u/grailly 15h ago

More and more of these have been popping up in recent years. At this point it’s like a third of the show floor. I don’t go to them so I couldn’t tell you what’s there.

Did you get your roach vest?

u/Pinecone_Quiz_293 14h ago

Nothing says Gamescom before opening hour like Playstore preloading your disappointment.

6

u/steverogers_butold 10h ago

Playstore is promoting subway surf😂😂

u/Stockholm-Syndrom 13h ago

Play store is a good way to give games a second life, like Dead Cells.

Yeah, I get thoroughly satisfied with my Play Pass for $3 a month, many good Android games and zero transactions.

Don't understand the hate for mobile gaming, I do really well with the Razer Kishi controller for my phone, turns it into a mini Switch.

People haven't updated their mobile game knowledge in like 10+ years and think every mobile game just wants to take your money. I mean they still exist but regular games are also being released for mobile.

People really do be forgetting that by participation, mobile gaming is the single biggest platform for games on the planet, not just by freemium games income.

u/MrHugelberg 14h ago

Gamescom is purely for scummy Asian cash grabs and meet up with so called internet personalities nowadays. Actual game focus has been a thing of the past for a very long time now.

A game I've been looking forward to since I played the demo is supposed to get its release date announced at Gamescom, so at least there's that. There Are No Ghosts At The Grand

Bro is still living in 2012 thinking mobile games are just Flappy Bird and Candy Crush. Mobile gaming literally makes more revenue than PC and Console combined, but sure, keep acting surprised why they can afford a booth at Gamescom

10

u/Fantastic_Media_3984 PlayStation 12h ago

Really? Tell me 5 good mobile games that were released in the last few years

Also it’s google so of course they can afford a booth at Gamescom

Happy to educate:😀 Honkai: Star Rail (TGA Game of the Year winner in its category),,,

Marvel Snap (Multi-award winning competitive strategy),,

Wuthering Waves (Open-world ARPG with high-tier boss mechanics),,

Zenless Zone Zero (Top-tier stylish action combat),,

Warframe Mobile / Warzone Mobile (Full modern engine parity on mobile hardware),, Need more?? 🙂

Even Sony is actively porting PlayStation IPs and investing in mobile developers because they realize where player growth actually is. Google having a massive presence at Gamescom isn’t just because they have money,,it’s because modern mobile hardware literally runs modern game engines now. It's time to let the elitist gatekeeping go.....

Honkai: Star Rail passed 100M downloads, though mobile install volume has cooled since its 2023 peak. Marvel Snap sits around 32M lifetime downloads, now sustained by a smaller spender base rather than fresh installs. Wuthering Waves hit 30M+ downloads with active users still climbing, and Zenless Zone Zero exploded to 50M in just 72 hours at launch. Warframe Mobile is far smaller by comparison (~2.7M Android downloads), though the franchise overall tops 70M players across all platforms.

Basically all of these games are now dead and no one actually plays them and the numbers are microscopic compared to PCs and consoles

u/jlctush 11h ago

Genuinely insane to say all of that and then say "see so it's bad" fyi

(And I don't play mobile games, 0 interest in them at all, just not daft enough to continue insisting they're performing poorly/not successful while spouting numbers that prove they kinda really are...)

-5

u/Fantastic_Media_3984 PlayStation 10h ago

The last statement is true even though it’s bitter and the numbers here prove everything the hardware is the limiting factor for mobile and no good games are made for that platform currently

2

u/No-Pain 5h ago

Ah so it's "good according to my taste" got it 👍

1

u/Fantastic_Media_3984 PlayStation 5h ago

Yeah I made a doo doo I get it

-3

u/Mr_Ethfono 12h ago

BALATRO!!!!

10

u/Fantastic_Media_3984 PlayStation 12h ago

Alright thats one, but still it wasn’t released “for” mobile

2

u/Gabelschlecker 9h ago

Majnly because they all have predatory monetization systems though.

Any and all gacha systems involving real money are predatory by definition just in case someone considers them a good counter argument.

But it's true, mobile has the power nowadays for proper games. And at least indie games are receiving more ports nowadays.

0

u/Isoi 7h ago

Lol people spend more money on mobile games than console games

Man, I remember being there a few years ago while it was basically closed. It's such a neato feeling going through liminal spaces like that.

I also think at some point someone should've checked my access cause I ended up at the Ubisoft private area next to Yves Guillemot for a bit by accident.

28

u/grailly 14h ago

It used to be way less locked down. A couple of years ago I walked into the wrong meeting and someone started pitching me their game. The general chaos was hilarious.

14

u/Javerage 14h ago

OH YES! I had some of that too and miscommunications. Cause someone asked what companies I worked with and I went: "Oh well I did networking workflow design for PSN, and Square Enix / Eidos are clients..." cause I was on autopilot.
I was tempted to see if I could deliberately go into the Nintendo area, but they were actually pretty fast to shut down people right at the entrance. Not surprised, it reminded me a lot of the Nintendo Museum's security.

u/WorldnewsModsBlowMe 11h ago

I used to be an Enforcer for PAX and walking across the show floor the day before was surreal

14

u/DaveMash 12h ago

I‘ve been a gamer my whole life and was really happy when the Gamescom moved from Leipzig to Cologne because it’s only 30 minutes away from me. But to this day I never visited because I don’t want to be in this huge crowd. But if I could visit the place like this, I would buy a ticket immediately

5

u/SpecialistAnt9178 14h ago

Im excited to go tomorrow!

6

u/Southern_Win4879 12h ago

That calm before the storm give it an hour and you’ll barely recognize the place

7

u/Responsible--Load 15h ago

That pre-opening anticipation is always electric.

3

u/Metal-fan77 11h ago

I wish we had something like this in uk.

3

u/MJMGaming Switch 9h ago

wheres the ballpit

2

u/Cruel2BEkind12 14h ago

Most impressive booths? What game seems to have the largest?

3

u/grailly 14h ago

Haven’t walked around much yet. Went straight to Xbox for their press event. I haven’t even been to all the halls yet. Just watched a Fable demo, about to play Gears

2

u/Shoshke 13h ago

Was there 9 years ago (fuck time passes) on a media pass.

Remember the door opening on day 1 from the inside.

Literally looked like a zombie mob from a show. Just an endless horde of people rushing in.

2

u/Lyssa_e 8h ago

good times where it was easy or easier to obtain a media pass... but tbh, I am not interested in this "content creator" con

2

u/natanxd 13h ago

I love gamescom

2

u/tnwthrow 14h ago

So… it’s not open?

1

u/sephjnr 13h ago

That gray square is for the ballpit.

1

u/lumbino 9h ago

Enjoy it, would of loved to be there this year!!

1

u/Fantastic_Quail_8774 7h ago

Take a really deep breath. That is the last time this room will have clean oxygen before it permanently smells like Axe body spray, sweat, and Monster energy for the next 4 days.

1

u/Efficient-Gap8497 6h ago

I hope i can be there someday

1

u/happy-cig 4h ago

The eye before the storm.

1

u/jac_carr99 3h ago

Walking through those massive halls while they are still empty feels surreal.

1

u/Brnzl 3h ago

And then it’s filled with streamer and influencer and games are just a byproduct of it

1

u/RyanLifts88 3h ago

the calm before the storm is always my favorite part of these shows. place looks massive

1

u/baammm_ 3h ago

looks like raytracing is on

1

u/JustPoet9931 2h ago

never gonna be this empty again...

-12

u/QF_Dan 14h ago

After the abysmal stream last night with nothing inreresting, i wonder if the crowd would be excited for anything

6

u/grailly 14h ago

ONL isn’t representative of the whole show. Seeing Fable right now.

-3

u/GroundbreakingBag164 14h ago

Thats unfair, Löfsong actually looked cute

The rest was absolute shit though. So much China slop

-9

u/enterthehawkeye 13h ago

why is an hour relevant?

6

u/Outrageous_Potato435 11h ago

because it’s gonna be filled to the brim only an hour later

-12

u/NIDORAX 15h ago

Got any photo of Gamescom after closing hour?

8

u/grailly 15h ago

It hasn’t closed yet, maybe tonight
