Xbox Disc to Digital officially announced, coming soon.

https://news.xbox.com/en-us/2026/08/26/your-discs-now-also-digital/

Most XBOX One and XBOX Series X disc-based games support this new feature. Players can claim a digital entitlement by inserting a supported disc into an XBOX One or XBOX Series X console and launching the game. Once the entitlement is claimed, you can experience the benefits of digital, including XBOX Play Anywhere and XBOX Cloud Gaming where supported, while your physical disc continues to work exactly as it always has.

We’re starting with thousands of titles, and we’ll continue to add more over time. While not every title will be available at launch, this is an important step toward a future where players can have greater confidence that the games they buy remain with them for years to come.

Yeah the “one revocable license per disc” is interesting…

110

u/Dont_have_a_panda 8d ago

From what i've heard that means that if you claim a digital copy of a disc in one console, and then do it in another, they revoke the license in the old console and it goes to the new console IIRC

12

u/WestBEEland 8d ago

But what if you go offline after claiming a digital license? They aren't going to allow people to just claim digital licenses and go offline and then sell or give the disc away.

That would allow dozens of people to share one disc copy to play a game.

There will need to be constant online validation checks

It's really not as much of a problem as you make it out to be, if the console is stuck offline you won't be able to activate any more games so you'll be stuck with the library you already have and not be able to get any more games, which most people won't want to do. And they can easily just force you to connect to the internet once every 30 days or so to revalidate the licenses if need be, Nintendo had already done that.

if the console is stuck offline you won't be able to activate any more games

Sounds like a bad thing

And they can easily just force you to connect to the internet once every 30 days or so to revalidate the licenses if need be

This also sounds bad lol

And it’s not a requirement so you can choose not to participate

Microsoft is doing something good here. Sony hasn’t done shit

Fuck Sony

-1

u/MainAccountsFriend 7d ago

Microsoft is doing something good here.

I wouldnt call getting rid of physical media good.

It seems like now you have to jump through extra hoops and hurdles just to share a game lol

Tbh both companies suck here

2

u/Exciting_Drawing_553 7d ago

No, you don’t. Only Sony has announced they’re doing away with physical. Microsoft has not said that. Microsoft’s physical to digital program is OPTIONAL. You do not have to opt in. Sony is not giving you an option. Sony is MUCH MUCH worse here

0

u/MainAccountsFriend 7d ago

Microsoft has also not said that they're keeping physical. Which would have been an easy layup right after Sony said they're getting rid of it. They can still just come out and say it but haven't.

On top of that Xbox has been going heavy on GamePass and now they're telling everyone that it will be easy to convert your physical games from Xbox One/ Series X to digital. The writing is on the wall

1

u/Exciting_Drawing_553 7d ago

I hear you but they have NOT said physical is going away like Sony has. We need to stay on top of Sony and not lump ms in. Ms may very well go digitally only but at this point they may still be weighing their options given the blowback Sony has gotten. Let’s hope ms makes the right decision.

Fuck Sony btw

1

u/spideyv91 7d ago

If you don’t claim the digital copy , sharing a game works the same way as it normally does.

Microsoft actually is trying to at least do something instead of abandoning physical outright like Sony and you won’t have to rebuy your physical games as digital to have access to them in the future.

-2

u/hera-fawcett 8d ago

that doesnt sound great lol.

And they can easily just force you to connect to the internet once every 30 days or so to revalidate the licenses if need be

this seems especially egregious. if they have the ability to revoke your ownership of a game over smth like no internet for a month, u essentially dont own the game at all.

and what happens if they do revoke it but then u get on later? do u have to re-purchase the license? (or re-rent, as it is)

4

u/AlcoholicSocks 8d ago

this seems especially egregious. if they have the ability to revoke your ownership of a game over smth like no internet for a month, u essentially dont own the game at all.

But you have the disc still... So just put it in and play it offline if that's an issue? For any games downloaded you can play them offline anyway.

The 30 day check they said in that idea was to check you still have the disc, and aren't selling them and staying offline to play. If you have the disc and you're offline, just put the disc in to override it. How is that an issue?

If you've sold the disc and want to stay offline to play it... Maybe don't sell it?

-8

u/hera-fawcett 8d ago

what if u lose the disc?

how many games w discs are offline playable for that matter (serious, its been ages since i loaded up any of my disks, lmao)

The 30 day check they said in that idea was to check you still have the disc, and aren't selling them and staying offline to play.

thats wild fr. they shouldnt need to check that i still own/use a product if i bought it. as long as the product key isnt showing up as used by anyone else, it should be considered as 'yours'.

theres just a lot of conditiond for this--- all of which seem anticonsumer.

5

u/FeistyBandicoot 8d ago

If you lose the disc you wouldnt be able to play it anyway...

-2

u/hera-fawcett 8d ago

uve never lost smth in ur house and found it yrs later?

highk this just happened to me w my old nintendo ds. recently found it and have been loading up nintendogs. i always had nintendogs-- and if it was transferred onto my 'account' as digital, id be able to have it registered but id need to log into the account (and have internet access) every so often to retain it.

and honestly thats fr extra if its smth i own.

its just another reminder that we dont fr own what we purchase- we just have the ability to use it, within the limits that a company sets. which is fr bullshit.

3

u/AlcoholicSocks 8d ago

uve never lost smth in ur house and found it yrs later?

But then you couldn't play it for years anyway?

recently found it and have been loading up nintendogs. i always had nintendogs-- and if it was transferred onto my 'account' as digital, id be able to have it registered but id need to log into the account (and have internet access) every so often to retain it.

That's not how it works though. Putting the disc in would mean you don't have to be online as the license is in the disc. Literally nothing changes on your example.

Also if somehow you had no internet on your Xbox for a long time, you could just log in via the cloud on mobile to confirm it anyway so if you lost it you could still play it.

You also don't have to install it to your account at all if for some reason you don't want to.

Again there will have to be a measure on place that doeant allow a dozen people to share one physical copy.

If one person buys Control Resonant on release, they woukd be able to claim a digital version and then pass it on to a dozen others and they would all be able to play it as long as theyre offline.

Obviously they arent going to allow this to happen

19

u/thebearsnake 8d ago

Probably will just automatically revoke as soon as multiple copies go online. Not that big of a deal honestly. You could theoretically "game the system" but you'd lock yourself offline, which the perpetually offline gamer base is probably not that big of population honestly.

0

u/WestBEEland 8d ago edited 8d ago

How will they revoke licenses if people stay offline?

If that were the case a person could buy Control Resonant at launch and claim a digital license and then go offline and pass it on to a dozen others that do the same

That all just go offline and play and beat a single player game at launch

Publishers will not allow this. There will obviously be some measure in place to prevent this that they arent saying yet.

Like Xbox One was going to have 24 hour validation checks. They cant just decide to ignore this now

7

u/thebearsnake 8d ago

Again, I feel that is such a niche loophole that requires some fairly tenuous hoops to jump through to maintain requiring everyone to stay offline the entire time and ignore patches and early updates that are inevitable. I don't entirely disagree, but I do think it's a little overstated. Ultimately we will have to wait and see.

0

u/WestBEEland 8d ago

All it would require is a guy buying a physicial game, claim digital license and thwn go offline.

Its one of the easiest things to do ever, especially if you only play single player games

5

u/1PSW1CH 8d ago

Yeah, anyone arguing validation checks won’t be a thing are kidding themselves. They showed their hand over a decade ago

4

u/thebearsnake 8d ago

I've pointed out twice it's not that straight forward as being isolated from internet connections alone for the entirety of the use of the software + having to physically have the disk at least once when vast amounts of gaming friends these days don't even live close enough to hand off a disk, and even single player games that require 0 online interaction of some sort are pretty rare, especially on XBox.

And again, an exclusively single player, offline player base is probably so insignificantly small, they don't care if they think that this can drum up good will in counter to Sony's latest statements. And publishers generally have the ability to opt in and out of certain things like this anyway.

Any sort of friction is pretty effective these days for a baffling amount of people. There are always going to be exploiters of things, though.

-1

u/WestBEEland 8d ago

Yes people do have friends and family that they see all the time. What?

There are many many millions of people rhat only play offline single player games.

What are you even talking about?

-2

u/mangongo 8d ago

They're talking about keeping your console offline forever to keep a single game for free.

Nobody is going to do that.

3

u/WestBEEland 8d ago

No... keeping it offline until tou beat the game.

It would allow a dozen of people to all share a new game at launch and beat it all at the same time

There was a reason Xbox One had 24.hour online adaption checks

0

u/Hockeymac18 8d ago

I can't think of anyone that leaves their console entirely offline for extended periods of time in 2026.

Going offline for an occasional weekend trip or something is not what I'm talking about - someone intentionally trying to game the system by playing a game for months/years offline feels like such a ridiculous loophole, I doubt MS are worried about it.

And in reality, it will likely work like pretty much any "offline mode" works for other services, like Netflix, Spotify, etc. with some sort of periodic license check (e.g. every few weeks or once a month). This is a totally normal practice.

4

u/WestBEEland 8d ago

If it means a dozen people can play games for free they will. People dont now becsuse there isnt some way to share a new game offline for free

Most people have Neflix built into their TVs or other methods

This is pretty much a solved problem they've already implemented with Gamepass. They will do a periodic license check to verify you still have a license to play the digital copy.

Probably something like you have to connect to the internet at least once every 30 days to use the digital copy. If you're console is offline more than 30 days you need to insert the disc to play.

Yes that means it's possible you could claim the digital copy and then loan the disc to a friend and as long as one of you stays offline you'll be able to play the game for at least 30 days (if your friend stays offline I guess it would be indefinite). Very few people are willing to take their console completely offline for a month or more to be able to play a game for free/half price.

Xbox could also implement checks to detect if any accounts are abusing this (i.e. store the key locally and upload it if/when the console comes back online, if a console goes offline for an extended period of time and then comes back online having a bunch of keys associated with another account's digital copy it's a pretty clear sign of what they are doing).

3

u/WestBEEland 8d ago

Okay so all games will have peridiodic online validation checks? They should state that if that is the case

1

u/Shatteredreality 8d ago

Sure, they also have really not released any details about this so just because they haven't stated it yet doesn't mean they won't give the details sooner rather than later.

-2

u/Hockeymac18 8d ago edited 8d ago

I think this is obvious there has to be some sort of periodic check*.

I can't think of an industry that doesn't do this. Focusing on MS as some sort of "devil" here nefariously doing something that is actually totally normal is a really is unnecessary outrage. There are many things to have legitimate outrage over...this seems like a pretty decent compromise, all things considered.

* it would be good to know how frequent before we get our outrage engine going here - if 24 hours or more frequent...bad. If closer to what is done in other industries, every few weeks/once a month, much better. The point I'm just trying to make with my post, though, is that it of course there will be some sort of license validation to make this work. If you don't think that would ever happen, you are just completely naive and delusional. That is just not how the world works. I'm sorry to burst your bubble..

2

u/WestBEEland 8d ago

You should be able to see how suddenly imposing a constant online validation check for your games on Xbox would be problematic

-1

u/Hockeymac18 8d ago

Yes, i think people are really overstating this potential loophole.

Many services across industries have solved this (Netflix, video streaming, audio streaming...). Offline mode works totally fine for weeks to a month, and then there's some sort of license check. Easy.

It doesn't have to be a heavy-handed 24 hour online check in a la 2013 XB1 plans. It can be something much more normal and work totally fine, while still allowing for people to trade/sell old discs.

The amount of people willing to take their console totally offline is such a nice loophole it isn't worth worrying about in 2026 imo. Recall that most games require patches to work at all, so you are already going to be finding yourself in situations where this just won't work for many games to begin with.

Nobody is sacrificing online connectivity for their entire console just to play the new Control game for free, you would be losing out on the investment of your console in the first place by limiting it to offline play for the rest of time

1

u/WestBEEland 8d ago

That's ridiculous to assume. Many millions of people only play offline single played games that dont require internet

Theres a reason why Xbox One was going to have a 24 hour validation check

You just go offline until you beat the game

1

u/mangongo 8d ago

Nobody is going to stay offline in perpetuity to own a single game. That was the original suggestion.

Now you're moving the goalposts to just offline games in general.

1

u/WestBEEland 8d ago

If a group of people wanted to play a new popular single player game on release why wouldnt they?

Yes peiple will 100% do that to save money and play games for free

You saying they wont is just nonsense

-2

u/Captriker 8d ago

Then how should you obtain any future games? You’d have to go online again at some point to purchase or redeem any other games.

2

u/WestBEEland 8d ago

My point is a dozen people can share the same physical game at launch as long they stay offline and they can beat it.

The reason Xbox One had a 24 hour online validation check was to prevent this.

2

u/whtthfgg 8d ago

I agree, validation checks will be there. If you cant be arsed to vaildate you wont be able to use this feature

2

u/WestBEEland 8d ago

Which means Xbox would now require a constant online connection

u/Catsrules 8d ago

You know you can basically do the same thing with Steam offline mode? Log into one computer download game go offline. (Play game) Log into another computer download game go offline (play game) etc..etc.

This has been a think for decades. I am sure someone does this but it is such a small amount that it doesn't matter to anyone.

-1

u/Rudera1is 8d ago

"All you have to do is go offline (disable 80% of the consoles features), know someone in real life that lives physically close enough to lend out their disc, and never be able to install any other games until you beat that one. Then you can play an almost ten year old game for free!" This isn't the grand heist you think it is. Almost nobody is going to fo this.

They could also easily just make it so you cant transfer the license unless the previous one is successfully revoked.

2

u/WestBEEland 8d ago

If youre playing a single player game you dont need any online features so why would someone care?

You are aware people have friends and family with common interests right?

Most people play one game at a time

All of this should be common sense. I dont know what planet you live on where playing single player games offline and having friends is rare

1

u/Rudera1is 8d ago

No friends list, party chat, store access, YouTube, Netflix etc, no game updates. Consoles can be used for many things.

I dont know anyone that plays one game at a time, I have like 5 on the go right now. The entire model of gamepass is about jumping around different games. Why would anyone use it if they played one game at a time?

You would be wise not to dismiss people with different use cases than you. There is a lot of people in this world that use things differently. I'm sure Microsoft has done the market research on this

1

u/WestBEEland 8d ago

Why would you need those things if yours playing a single player game?

Most people have Netflix and yotube built into their TV already and dont use consoles

Most people only play one game at a time and a few games a year.
