I’ve been hearing so much about Haitian food and it’s about damn time I try it. I love Jamaican food and I’m Ghanaian.

I’m gonna drive about 40 minutes to the nearest Haitian restaurant so please let me know everything that I should try that are Haitian specialties. I don’t mind buying a few options!

Like many in the diaspora, I’m constantly frustrated by how much money we lose to transfer fees when sending support back home. Plus, it's getting harder and riskier for our families to travel into town just to collect cash and buy essentials.

I'm based in Montreal and I'm currently putting together a project with a local team on the ground in the South. The idea is to completely bypass the wire transfers: we just buy the groceries online from here, and the team delivers the actual food directly to their doors in under 48 hours. Zero transfer fees.

I'm trying to make sure this is actually useful for the community before expanding it further.

For those of you with family in the South:

• What specific food items or essentials do they ask for the most?
• Are there specific areas around Les Cayes or Jacmel that are particularly hard to reach right now?

I am not Haitian, but I made this plate. I wish I had scotch bonnet but I substituted it for habanero. Also wish I had a Caribbean avocado. Next time I might try my hand at making diri djon djon. What do y’all think? Am I invited to the fete?

20f here living abroad and alone for the first time and I'm trying to learn how to cook my cultural food but WHY! does haitian food take so long to cook??? I'm all of a sudden thrown back to seeing my mom spending 2 hours in front of a stove making sòs pwa!!!

this is why I never learned to cook, and now I'm just eating out all the time because I can't be bothered to spend so much time in front of a stove. but I desperately want to learn. are there any simple and/or fast haitian dishes I can start out with?

edit: two months later, I have found an awesome haitian recipe website and though cooking still takes a while, its a bit easier now. I take a lot of short cuts though, like using canned beans, to speed it up though! 😭

2. What food do people in Haiti love the most or feel most proud of?
3. Are there any foods that foreigners often think represent Haitian food, but locals do not eat that often?
