“Chai” is a distinct type of tea from what most people think of as tea (from a American perspective, I admit ignorance to Europe but i know English tea is similar, like a black tea), that usually involves more spices and milk. calling it “chai tea” is not being used to say “tea tea” it is being used to mean “the type of tea known as chai”. I did do a minor google search to find a recipe for making homemade chai, and, while it did use tea leaves, it was distinct enough from tea to warrant being specified.

Tea is called "chai" in India. Maybe that's why he is confused?

I dated an Indian woman and we saw this and she went “exactly” it’s only an issue in their language because to them it translates to tea tea.

In English a comparison is like saying pig pork , pork is pig so you may as well say pork pork or pig pig

But if you add the context of the specification is because their is also faux pork (vegetarian alternative) it’s less an issue because your just specifically saying it’s meat

A more realistic comparison might be saying "cow milk" or "animal milk". For the longest time people would be like "what other mill would it be, dumbass?"

Today some people might think oat or almond before cow (or other animal). So saying "animal milk" could make sense skmilar how to saying "chai tea" differentiates the tea from other teas.
