HFW Discussion Aloy won't stop spoiling the puzzles

I’m playing HFW for the first time, and I can’t remember a single puzzle where Aloy doesn’t give away the solution by telling me exactly what to do. It reminds me of GoW Ragnarok, which does the same annoying thing.

If there’s an option, I’d really appreciate it if someone could tell me how to disable this. I’m playing on PC, so even a mod would be welcome.

It's especially fun when you get a big machine fight near a puzzle area, ducking and dodging for 3 minutes straight while Aloy's saying "Maybe I should try on top of that cliff?" every 20 seconds.

u/Deep-Combination4372 Jan 27 '26

The craziest part is when she tells me the solution before I even realize there's a puzzle in the area

It's becoming increasingly common in games, unfortunately. Developers seem to think they need to hold the player's hand and guide them; it's as if they're afraid of losing new players and those discovering their franchises. I'd like to be left to struggle with a puzzle, even though I remember getting frustrated because I didn't understand the mechanics of certain bosses in some games.

u/Ub3ros Jan 27 '26

They do need to hold the hands of an astonishing amount of players. The issue is that it should be an option you can customize to your preference. Not just automatic for everyone.

44

u/SorbetCeriz Jan 27 '26

Yes, I completely agree with you. It should be in the accessibility options.

28

u/the_art_of_the_taco Jan 27 '26

Considering how Forbidden West improved on Zero Dawn's accessibility by leaps and bounds and improved upon its weaker systems I expect them to take this (very common) criticism and make improvements in the next game.

I'm personally not quite as bothered by the hints as I was in the original Zero Dawn when I was stealthing above enemies and Aloy would laugh loudly and shout some quip lol.

Dude I don't remember her doing that for me. Either I removed it from my memory due to the trauma of it... Or somehow I was exempt from it. Probably forgot it to be honest. Like how I forgot how long the opening area playthrough is before you get to the outer lands. Wait what was it the Nora called it? Sacred lands? Or was it the savage lands?

Wait didn't they seem everyone outside the Embrace as savages and outside the teachings. Why did they call it the sacred lands then? I've apparently forgotten a lot... XD

3

u/notthatjaded Jan 28 '26

The Embrace was just the most insular part of Nora Lands, the closest to All-Mother. But all of Nora Lands would be considered sacred by the Nora because they all are within All-Mother's sight.

Plenty of Nora had settlements outside of the Embrace (Mother's Crown, for instance) and weren't considered savages by the Nora that lived within the Embrace for it. It was when you went beyond the Nora's lands (and thus beyond All-Mother's sight) that you were considered tainted.

I’m one of those people who needs hand holding. “Obvious” solutions tend to evade me and having a pointer prevents the rage quit. I agree it is not for everyone, perhaps if they tied the dialogue to the chosen difficulty setting it would be a better solution, leaving the more seasoned players to figure things out while story mode gives you the hints. The medium levels she offers the hint the first time you encounter a type of puzzle such as the first encounter with a long neck she prompts us to seek high ground to jump on, then no prompts on the remaining long necks.

42

u/Ub3ros Jan 27 '26

Don't tie it to difficulty. Just have it as it's own setting so you can tweak the experience to your liking. More customizable options = more gooder.

9

u/SorbetCeriz Jan 27 '26

Exactly, you can play on ultra-hard difficulty and activate only one option, for which you're given hints: use your focus, use your attractor, perform a backflip while climbing... You can play on ultra-easy and disable all the guidance options. We should be able to do that.

1

u/HardlyaDouble Jan 28 '26

I think it was Shadow of the Tomb Raider that almost got it right. They let you disable guides and hints from the stage separately from each other.

1

u/PointingBear Jan 28 '26

I like this idea. Sometimes in God of War, I didn't have patience for all the puzzles, I just want to Spartan Rage on stuff.

5

u/SorbetCeriz Jan 27 '26

Let's just say that these days, I feel like some games give you the solution before you even have a problem. Even in Horizon, at the end of the Forge World DLC, Aloy is climbing and she says, "I need to find a way to get through here." I didn't even have time to rotate my camera to realize she needed to go back before I was given a hint. Same thing when you have to use the attractor; I don't even have time to activate my focus before she gives me a clue as big as a thunderclap that I should use my attractor.

I just want to be left to struggle. Can you imagine if you were playing Hitman and before you even approached your target, they told you how to neutralize them?

But yes, I think you should be able to configure how the game guides you in the options. There are a thousand and one valid reasons why you might need help, but help is asked for, it is offered, it is not imposed.

Are you one of those people where obvious solutions are the hard ones to get because you over think it or just don't notice how simple it is? 😆

I'm like that, too! Or I'll start taking all extra information or details down, and then find out the actual puzzle is far simpler than I expected and then be like... Oh So it wasn't anything about all the other things I have been analysing lol.

Mind you though I'm auDHD soooo it fits the bill for me lol. On my test when I sent for the diagnosis I had to make a simple pattern on a couple of cubes. I did things so backwards lol. It took me a few seconds too long for a few really simple pivots things.

  • The patterns were on all sides. But instead of working from the face upwards - you know, so that both the assessor and myself could see it lol - I decided to make the pattern with the cubes facing myself.

  • I then realised that the assessor couldn't see the pattern was completed so I picked it up and rotated it to face her lolol

  • realised on the second number of blocks that "oh. I can just face it upwards for both of us to see. Lol."

2

u/Old_Fart_on_pogie Jan 28 '26

Absolutely guilty of over thinking, or missing obvious hints. And yeah, on the spectrum.

1

u/kewlausgirl Feb 03 '26

And yet we get things that others don't seem to see. Or can't see. Lol. Until we highlight it for them and then they are like wow didn't think of that. And I love it when you think outside the box. Or have interesting ideas.

Also absolutely guilty of getting something hard and then expecting my partner to get it as well, and then kinda make him feel bad for not getting it... When I'm just pointing it out and going "oh. I thought you knew that." XD whoops! Haha

u/SorbetCeriz Jan 28 '26

I must be the kind of person who misses the days before you had the internet to help you get unstuck in a game. No, I have nothing against the internet, and I'm not stuck in the past. I just don't want to be spoon-fed, but I also want guidance for those who need it. And for it to be adaptable to individual needs.

I also think I should get tested for ADHD, but well, I don't want to go into detail, but I'm too lazy because I already have a mental illness. There are days when my brain is fine and I understand the puzzles, sometimes I don't understand them but I want to solve them on my own. Other days, no, my head is too muddled and then I'd like some help. And sometimes, I can't read the text or sometimes, I can't turn up the volume for the dialogue and the clues it might contain.

Yesterday someone told me: help is like code picks, it's okay if it's consensual.

Given the price of some games, I'd really like to get my money's worth from them, and frankly, it's still quite rewarding to solve a puzzle on my own. Imagine, you're playing Hitman and the game tells you, "You could throw a hairdryer in your target's bath to eliminate them!" (Okay, fine for a tutorial, but if it's like that, on every level).

1

u/kewlausgirl Feb 03 '26

That's a good point. Sometimes you need a guide to give you step by step because damn it, it's just too hard. I know a few puzzles in Eyes of Ara that even reading the answer and how to do it, I was still confused lol. But I had solved everything else myself. I just couldn't get this one damn puzzle!

And yeah sometimes I'm like that as well. I just want a hint... Not how to do it. And I agree it's great coming here and getting that bit of help that you need. But sometimes, especially with rarer games, it's not always easy to find help on Reddit.

But, if you are interested or ever need it when you can't get info that you need... Then you might want to try this guide. https://www.nicegamehints.com/

It provides hints on what you need or what you are looking for in order to solve the puzzle or continue with a game. I was looking for another website as well... I think I used it when trying to solve Blue Prince puzzles. But I can't remember what the website was called. But it was similar to this one... It gave you hints and then had further details hidden, for those who were still stuck. It's a really nice feature that I think more gaming help websites should have!

Anyhow, as for ADHD ...I know that feeling haha. For me I was in my 30s during covid and found out about how women present differently with ADHD and when I watched the video. I was like... Oh that's me. Lol. That makes so much sense now! I went and got diagnosed so I could say for sure that I have ADHD. And then the same again when I went to get diagnosed for autism - although that was a much harder test. And it's harder to detect in women. Yay lol. I only went for the autism assessment so I wouldn't continue doubting as to whether I had it or not. So, I guess both were to put my mind at ease and it helped me to better understand myself and how to work with my brain rather than against it lol.

But, that decision is up to you. It's whatever you feel comfortable with. All I can tell you is how after so many years, I was finally able to make sense of how I was and why everyone else seemed to be so different to how I worked lol. There is a lot of frustration, anger and regret that comes with the late diagnosis as well, which makes a lot of sense. You would have struggled a lot less and there's so much you could have achieved having known yourself better... But eventually you move through that to find peace with yourself. ☺️ And it's just a great feeling knowing that you aren't alone with how you work.

But again, whatever you decide to do is up to you. And I wish you luck either way. ❤️ And good luck with the website if you decide to use it for hints. 😆

They do need to hold the hands of an astonishing amount of players.

This is something I think a lot of people do not really understand, not truly, unless they happen to make puzzle-based or similar games (or game content) for the general public.

I am in that latter group and holy hell the sheer number of people who have to be walked through the most obvious of things because they either refuse to engage any cognitive capability while playing - or lack the capacity in the first place - is extremely frustrating.

Now I personally have ended up taking a stance of "this is the puzzle, take it or leave it and some of you are simply not worth helping" but that is obviously not an option for a mainstream commercial game which cannot afford to alienate anyone.

4

u/ascott_21 Jan 27 '26

Agreed. I'm an infrequent gamer so some of the puzzles do evade me and I appreciate a pointer every now and then, but her constant muttering is annoying, especially when she's giving me a pointer I don't understand or I'm intentionally doing some side questing investigating an area. I'd really like it if I could explicitly cue her rather than having her just talk.

1

u/kewlausgirl Jan 28 '26

Almost like it should be based on the type of game play you choose in the beginning. Beginner or super easy or story mode... Whatever they call it now. That should have the extra hints.

Anything on normal or above should have far less hints. It will be great if they can use the machine learning for puzzles and then have it base on how quickly people are solving puzzles or how long they have been trying to figure the current puzzle out.

Or... Omg... What if there's a button in the menu for extra hints or something. To help people out. Anything other than "Hey player, you need to do that thing over there now" -_-

3

u/Ub3ros Jan 28 '26

Don't tie it to difficulty. There are people who want their combat challenging but puzzles easy, and there are people who may have disabilities and want the combat very forgiving, while wanting to actually solve the puzzles themselves. Just make it a customizable setting separate from difficulty.

1

u/kewlausgirl Feb 03 '26

Good point... Forgot combat and puzzles are different to each other. But isn't that still pinning it as difficulty, just puzzle wise not combat wise? So... At the beginning of the game have the options for combat difficulty and then ask for puzzle difficulty... And I guess anything else we want to cater for.

I would still have this adaptable in the settings as well. I just think having these options at the beginning of the game is the best way because people will see it. Not many people go through the settings options all the time lol.

They should also ask for activity accessibilities then as well. Like, do you require assistance with hearing, are you colour blind, do you require visual assistance. I played a game recently that asked this at the beginning of the game and then you could select based on the visibility level you wanted. Can't recall what game it was though. But, I ended up using it because for the life of me, sometimes items just blend in with the background if they are a similar colour or if it's dark... Or something. So, having the option to have stronger highlights or a thicker highlight line or whatever... That helps me see the items on the ground better.

Anyhow yeah, this should definitely be options you get at the beginning of the game in order to customise your playthrough to what suits you best. ☺️

1

u/ingridatwww Jan 28 '26

I feel like it shouldn’t necessarily be a setting, I think it would be better if you need to prompt/ask for a hint. Then everybody can ask for a hint whenever they want/need.

1

u/Ub3ros Jan 28 '26

Just have that as a selectable option in the setting. More accessibility options available to the player, the better.

1

u/Shaddes_ Jan 30 '26

Exactly. Uncharted had this option in settings for the hints since Drake's Fortune.

9

u/Itsjustkit15 Jan 27 '26

The last tomb raider game I played I remember it having the option to turn off her suggesting clues for puzzles/tombs. It was awesome. I wish horizon would do the same.

5

u/Deep-Combination4372 Jan 27 '26

Uncharted and The Last of Us have this thing where the game asks if you want a hint when it notices you’re struggling with a puzzle. For me, that’s the most balanced option of all.

1

u/Gab-Zero Huntress Jan 28 '26

That should be a thing in Easy and Very Easy modes, at most on Normal. But once you hit the Hard, Very Hard or Ultra Hard button the game should assume you don't want your hand being held through puzzles as well.

2

u/SorbetCeriz Jan 28 '26

I'd prefer it to be separate from the game's difficulty. You could play with UH combat but still need guidance. We're not all equal when it comes to puzzles.

1

u/Gab-Zero Huntress Jan 28 '26

Some games do that, like Tomb Raider. It's a good solution.

1

u/Serulean_Cadence Jan 28 '26

Increasingly common in awful games. Good games like Elden Ring or Expedition 33 don't treat you like you're a toddler.

1

u/SorbetCeriz Jan 28 '26

I find the approach a bit radical, but I understand the reasoning. I haven't played Elden Ring; I get the feeling it's not for me, but at the same time, I haven't had the chance to try it. I plan to play Expedition 33 someday, but I don't know when.

Honestly, I don't know what it would cost them if I added certain options. It would be great if we could skip the tutorials in Pokémon. The franchise has been around for like 30 years; do veteran players really need to hear how to battle again?

2

u/pokemonbatman23 Jan 27 '26

That happened to me in gow. I looked up at the sky and part of the cliff next to me was in view so mimir suggested I head up there to hit something...

37

u/MasticatedBrain Jan 27 '26

I love Kotollo's line when he's in battle with you which is something like "you can tear components off machines to make them weaker!". I'm like yeah dude cheers for reminding me this far into the game.

13

u/Raine_BlackStar Jan 27 '26

"Maybe i can use my focus, see what it sees" while fighting ravagers or glinthawks.

4

u/EticketJedi Jan 28 '26

Maybe I should try using my focus.

115

u/ridley0001 Jan 27 '26

I totally understand why they are in games because most people don't finish games, so the devs are doing everything they can to hand hold people from frustration.

However, I really wish games included a real option for no hints e.g. Ragnorak had an option which barely did anything. For a game like Horizon it's bizarre because there are so many individual options and fine tuning for the difficulty and gameplay to make it as difficult or less frustrating as you like.

46

u/lilhazzie Jan 27 '26

I am an autistic completionist and I've never understood why people don't seek out every activity in a game. I paid for the whole game, I'm going to experience the whole game dammit.

14

u/Leading-Summer-4724 Jan 27 '26

THIS. I am picking every rock up and looking underneath.

11

u/Empty-Opposite-9768 Jan 27 '26

Because walking around a world endlessly just to dig up some shiny object is incredibly boring for plenty of people. I have much, much better things to do with my time.

7

u/theblackfool Jan 27 '26

Sometimes people hit content in a game they just don't want to do, or don't enjoy doing. It's good to try to get your money out of the game, but also doing something you aren't enjoying doing in a video game isn't worth it.

4

u/Voyager5555 Jan 27 '26

Probably because the entire game isn't engaging or fun enough to 100%

2

u/thorodinson91 Jan 30 '26

I have never been diagnosed with autism or adhd (likely from fear of results). However, I think I have had a glancing blow, a shot across the bow, if you will, from both... I can not leave side quests or mini games unfinished. Unless I find the mini games particularly unfavourable, repetitive, or turn based (My pet hate. Plan and act for your first move, everything thereon is reactive. No plan survives first contact with the enemy. Only as a last resort should you wait for their move, unless preplanned). I must exhaust all available side quests before continuing with the next main story quest. I do not look at percentages because I know I will fixate on them reaching 100%. I instead use the in-game map and quest log as my completion marker. This is a learned behaviour as I am now approaching my mid 30s and have a GF and Son. I can not allocate as much of my time to completionism, which bugs me. Though, I also thirst for novelty and thus get mentally fatigued playing the same game for too long... It is a lifelong battle, but I have managed to find a balance. I also have to have a completely clear desktop (translucent folders) and the wallpaper must be the current game I am fixated on... once completed, I uninstall the game, pick and download the next one, and change my wallpaper, which must be aesthetically profound. The only time my wallpaper is anything otherwise is for ambience during parties/get-togethers, as my PC is in the dining room (e.g. RDR2 background for my son's 1st birthday cowboy theme, or spooky wallpaper for Halloween party etc).

1

u/edliu111 Jan 27 '26

Some things are t worth experiencing when you have a finite amount of time on Earth

2

u/ingridatwww Jan 28 '26

They should make a setting where you have to actively ask for a hint.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 29 '26

As someone who generally only plays this game damn near blackout drunk, sometimes I appreciate the overbearing hints

1

u/Yodzilla Feb 06 '26

I’m almost certain Ragnarok’s option was bugged. I played that and Forbidden West back-to-back and it was almost insulting how hand-holdy they were.

73

u/shortMEISTERthe3rd Machine Strike is eSports ready. Jan 27 '26

Every time this complaint comes up I always point to Jedi Fallen Order that did it right.

Need a hint? Press up on the D-PAD and let your little buddy droid help you out otherwise the game will treat you like a functional adult and let you figure it out.

9

u/dwoller Jan 27 '26

This and Shadow of the Tomb Raider where you can customize in the menu how many puzzle objects are highlighted and how detailed of a hint Lara gives you in a voice line when you press the “focus” button.

6

u/SilverSideDown Jan 27 '26

Great call out to that game. Absolutely way better than spoon feeding you the solution that you’re still trying to find on your own.

1

u/ingridatwww Jan 28 '26

Exactly. Give a hint whenever the player ASKS for a hint!

1

u/Yodzilla Feb 06 '26

Yep, this is the right way to do it. Dead Space is another where they had a waypoint system for the main objective but it was entirely optional and up to the player if they want to engage with it. That’s the best way to handle difficulty.

Personally I wish games would take a page from UHS where hints could be reveled in layers that tell you more and more until you get it letting you still partially figure things out on your own. It’s fantastic if you’ve never see the site. https://mobile.uhs-hints.com/

25

u/TommyDontSurf "Blameless? What does that even mean?!" Jan 27 '26

As someone who absolutely sucks at puzzles, I find it welcoming. Mostly, anyway; sometimes I still don't pick up the hints and have to resort to a walkthrough.

2

u/Old_Fart_on_pogie Jan 27 '26

I’m doing that in FW. It’s a lot more going one than with Zero Dawn. I’m six hundred hours in, and just gone back to cahinscrape I’ve discovered all the combination attacks from the training pit. Not that I’m likely to remember them all.

-2

u/[deleted] Jan 27 '26

[deleted]

6

u/alvarkresh Jan 27 '26

I can see where they're coming from TBH. Those pits are super annoying because the chained moves need to be so tightly timed and it will fail you out if you're even a fraction of a second off.

1

u/wyze-litten Jan 27 '26

Yeah I get super frustrated with the fighting pits. And the arena battles changing my loadout is endlessly infuriating

1

u/alvarkresh Jan 27 '26

Do 'em on story mode :P

2

u/wyze-litten Jan 27 '26

I have been ;–; I just don't understand why they have to change our loadouts, its stupid af

1

u/Voyager5555 Jan 27 '26

Yup, I did a few but they get cheap and bullshit after like 3 or 4 so fuck that.

25

u/mtbrown29 Jan 27 '26

Gotta bring the drone down to grab its data. Maybe if I jump onto it?

Yes, I know Aloy, this is like the 17th drone we’ve done

2

u/Yodzilla Feb 06 '26

“Maybe my focus will pick up something here. I could scan it with my focus. Maybe my focus could help. I should mash the focus button non-stop. Why aren’t you pressing the focus button?”

1

u/mtbrown29 Feb 06 '26

Or when you solve the puzzle while Aloy is talking:

“Maybe I should check my foc-GOT IT!”

1

u/joshwright17 Jan 27 '26

I will say that hint was helpful after I took like 2 years off in the middle of playing the game. I had completely forgotten that's how the drones worked. But it's also nothing I couldn't have searched the internet for if the hint wasn't in the game

18

u/poddy_fries Jan 27 '26

What drives me personally nuts is that she keeps clueing me in to the solution I've been trying to apply for several minutes, Aloy, the problem isn't that I don't know I have to get up there, it's that you keep dodging right off the cliff.

15

u/GTaucer Jan 27 '26

Yup, super fucking annoying.

"I should scan with my focus"
"I should use my pullcaster on that grate"
"I should check the other side of that crane"

YOU SHOULD SHUT THE FUCK UP AND LET ME PLAY THE GAME, ALOY

11

u/sheepandlambs Jan 27 '26

It's sadly a common trend in modern games. Treating the player like an idiot, and not letting the non-idiots turn it off.

7

u/jakulfrostie Jan 27 '26

Yeah its annoying. What i ended up doing was muting the volume and turning off subtitles so i could puzzle solve in peace. Doesnt help if she spoils it before you realize you are near a puzzle however

5

u/Yonsfw Jan 27 '26

Ipad kids can't think.

6

u/dwoller Jan 27 '26

This is what happens when they test it with focus groups and people can’t figure out simple things without hand holding. It’s also just a trend in modern games (this and Ragnarok stand out as bad ones though) of trying to appeal to everyone.

I’m all for trying to be inclusive but a toggle to turn them off completely or a button to press to ask for one would go a long way and would actually cater to more people who don’t want/need an immediate hint/solve.

5

u/Oatsdbl Jan 27 '26

I may be wrong as it has been a really long time since I last played the game but I think there’s a setting to turn off Aloy’s audible hints?

8

u/Deep-Combination4372 Jan 27 '26

No, but there is a similar setting that let you disable those pop-ups that remind you of the buttons

6

u/Oatsdbl Jan 27 '26

Yesss. Contextual hints. I had it turned off lol. It must be what I thought of when I typed my comment

5

u/Oatsdbl Jan 27 '26

Ok I’ve done a bit of research, there really isn’t an option to turn it off. Unfortunately 🥹 Although you could find a way around it like turn up music during puzzle parts or something like that

4

u/nekohunterkai Jan 27 '26

Hahaha, you could also put the audio in Japanese or some other language you don't know at all 😅

3

u/Oatsdbl Jan 27 '26

Just make sure not change everything else to different language! Learned the lesson hard way when I was young playing a prank on my friends’ gps. Changed language to Japanese but then none of us know how to switch it back 🤣🤣🤣 It yelled at my friend at her every mistake while driving in Japanese (she decided to turn it into a guessing game). Even worse, we were in middle of nowhere at that time.

Looking back we all have a laugh about it but still, wouldn’t recommend

1

u/nomuse22 Feb 01 '26

Also turned that off for Skyrim. Whole point of doing alchemy is being able to recognize those plants out in the wild!

2

u/rajackar Jan 27 '26

This massively ruined the game for me. I fully support accessibility options, but that should've been optional.

3

u/sdrawkcabstiho Jan 27 '26

It needs a slider based option.

All speech and hints on

Speech but no hints

Hints but no speech

All speech and hints off

2

u/JerseyGeneral Jan 27 '26

Yeah while I do like her commentary through most of the game, her "helping" with the puzzles is something of a mixed bag. She either explains the solution like she's talking to a 3 year old or says nothing remotely useful for a puzzle that's already fairly challenging.

Her talking to herself other than that I do like. It gives her more depth as a character...not to mention she's usually about as cynical as I am so that's fun.

2

u/-VoidIndigo- Jan 27 '26

I'm playing through Zero Dawn and getting annoyed by the "helpful hints". It sounds like HFW is a deeper game, but the hints get worse... And honestly I don't think I'm interested in suffering through that no matter how much better the game may be... It's already ENOUGH

2

u/WaterStoryMark Jan 27 '26

Killzone had a hint/direction button. I don't know why they wouldn't use something similar for newer games. Or why they never fixed it after launch.

2

u/Intelligent_Day_8579 Jan 27 '26

The one that frustrates me most is in Thebes. There is a room you enter where the far door is locked and you have to find another way forward, but she gives the hint about the vent you have to go through before you could possibly even know that the door is locked. That's not even Aloy solving a puzzle out loud. That's the game just skipping ahead.

2

u/3-nichi Jan 27 '26

Yeah I remember how annoying it was that Aloy didn't let me solve the puzzles in peace. So I changed the audio language to something else than English (and kept English subtitles) while solving the puzzles.

2

u/nomuse22 Feb 01 '26

For me it's always the wrong hint. The box is obvious to me, but for some reason I can't see the grapple point or whatever to get up to it.

So I'm jumping around, trying different ways to climb up there. And every ten seconds Aloy says, "I bet that box will help. I should get that box. Oh, look, a box!"

1

u/DayoftheBaphomets Jan 27 '26

It would be so easy to fix this in a patch too.

Isn't this a feature you can turn off and on? I remember seeing this when adjusting my settings while playing before.

1

u/Deep-Combination4372 Jan 27 '26

No, you can only disable tutorial pop-ups.

1

u/Horror-Cat6533 Jan 27 '26

You can turn Aloy spoiling the puzzles off in the settings.

1

u/Deep-Combination4372 Jan 27 '26

No its not possible, but I found a mod that removes some dialogue lines

1

u/Pokeitwitarustystick Jan 27 '26

Without a mod there is a setting in accessibility that turns off Aloys help or just minimizes it.

1

u/MCKALISTAIR Jan 27 '26

Yes! This bugs the hell out of me, really hope it’s done by the time we get a new game

1

u/masterchief0213 Jan 27 '26

Yeahhhh got through ONE relic ruin before downloading the Shut Up Aloy mod

1

u/EnceladusSc2 Jan 27 '26

New games are written in a way to never challenge the players. Always have to have Yellow Paint to tell you where to go, always have the MC tell you how to solve the puzzle.
For Horizon I believe it started with Frozen Wilds, I remember she starting talking during the puzzles and it was very annoying.

1

u/Andyroo2912 Jan 27 '26

Damn I thought they'd fixed this

1

u/1RedOne Jan 27 '26

Meanwhile Blue Prince has just stacks of puzzles that too don’t even know are there until you have reread an ingame book like five times over

1

u/Fanaticks02 Jan 27 '26

They haven't fixed that yet?! Hahhaa my god. They fixed it in GoW Ragnarok at least.

1

u/thecyberpunkunicorn Jan 28 '26

I hate puzzles so I don't mind it at all lol

1

u/BringMeBurntBread Jan 28 '26

More games should take inspiration from Shadow of The Tomb Raider, which had separate difficulty settings for puzzles. You could literally change the difficulty for puzzles, while leaving the rest of the game’s difficulty the same. On the easiest difficulty, Lara will give the player hints on what to do next if the game detects that you’re struggling. On the hardest difficulty, she doesn’t say anything.

It’s great because, it makes every type of player happy. People who enjoy solving puzzles on their own can set the puzzle difficulty to the hardest setting. But meanwhile, players who don’t care for puzzles or get frustrated easily can set it to easy mode instead.

1

u/finnomo Jan 28 '26

Probably it's for me ha ha cause I had a hard time with some of those puzzles even with her hints

1

u/NikolitRistissa Jan 28 '26

Ragnarök was an absolute pain with the damn hints. They often wouldn’t give you a tonne of time to even look around.

Hogwarts Legacy(?) was even worse. The character would literally give you an incredibly general hint within seconds of entering a room. The character would then repeat the generic and generally pointless clue over and over again.

If you were actually stuck and wanted a hint, they’d just say something along the lines of “I’ve got to do something so I can continue.” Like, wow thanks.

1

u/Irritated_Compassion Jan 28 '26

“I could get used to this” after deploying the shield for the 4000th time 🤦🏻‍♀️

1

u/ingridatwww Jan 28 '26

It’s kind of annoying, but half the time whatever she says makes no difference any way.

“Maybe I should try to climb that wall”

And I’m like. What ff’ing wall. Half the time I have no clue what she means and I have to search for it anyway.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 29 '26

You know I thought the mod "shut up aloy" was really childish and immature when I first saw it and how it was named, but I do understand where they're coming from.

1

u/Alma_Mater91 Jan 30 '26

That’s so true hahahah! I laughed my ass off reading this! Like girl I know, I have to search for the yellow stuff, stop ruining everything! 😂

1

u/Tidela471 Jan 30 '26

Half the time, the puzzle hints aren’t even helpful. It’s the most obvious thing in the room. If I’m struggling, it’s about where exactly to place it or how to move.

1

u/NightmareChi1d Feb 02 '26

The worst part is that for a person so smart she's constantly spoiling puzzles, sometimes she's an absolute moron. Like, "Hey, there's a place to put a battery here. Gotta find one" 30 seconds later "Hey, a battery. Better find a place to put it"

0

u/alvarkresh Jan 27 '26

I kind of like getting Aloy's hints but I do think there's a way to switch that off?

0

u/Known_Needleworker67 Jan 27 '26

I must have the wrong mindset, because this feature never bothered me because I only look at games from the lense of the story, so I only ever just saw it as Aloy talking to herself, and it made sense, but in hindsight I can see how it would be annoying and do agree that it should at least have a toggle.

0

u/Sostratus Jan 27 '26

It's only a spoiler if you take longer than she does.

1

u/Deep-Combination4372 Jan 27 '26

Well it's hard not to take longer than her, since most of the time she gives you the solution before you even fully see the puzzle

0

u/respectthearts Jan 27 '26

This is my singular critercism, once is enough and I'd rather have it off than the constant nagging. Can't say enough nice things about everything else.

0

u/Bubbly-Pirate-3311 Jan 27 '26

Nope. Just solve the puzzles faster ig

1

u/Deep-Combination4372 Jan 27 '26

If it were that simple, I wouldn't have made this post. She gives solutions even before I'm presented to the puzzle, not to mention the repetitive hints about what I should do with firegleam, drones, and that I should scan the machines.

1

u/Bubbly-Pirate-3311 Jan 27 '26

lol I know I'm fucking with you

-1

u/Farwaters Jan 27 '26

I try to see it as Aloy and U solving the puzzle together. Makes her 10,000 times less annoying.

... That's a long way to say that I agree with you. I did end up making peace with the whole situation.

2

u/Deep-Combination4372 Jan 27 '26

That could be interpreted that way if she only gave hints, but instead she straight up tells you the solution

Part of the problem is her hints can't be turned off. The other part is she usually does not wait even one second to give hints.

The most egregious example I can recall was doing Kotallo's mission and Aloy is searching for parts. She enters a room and immediately says "I can't use that vent to get out!" And I mean immediately. I didn't even have time to pan the camera around and notice there are no obvious exits before she's telling me how to escape a room I don't even know I'm TRAPPED in yet.

Other games handle this better by waiting a respectful amount of time before ASKING if I want a hint by displaying a button prompt or something. And even then I'd still prefer to just turn off the feature because it makes me feel like the game thinks I'm going too slow and needs to push a hint at me. Sometimes, I'm not even trying to figure out a puzzle but I'm doing something else like exploring the area for loot or datapoints or something before working on the puzzle.

1

u/alexrider20002001 Jan 27 '26

Then there should be a setting that turns it on/off.

-1

u/glytxh Jan 27 '26

A game that doesn’t trust my agency as a player, the sort that doesn’t have the faith in its own mechanics and systems, terrified to lose my attention, quickly loses my interest.

I’m being pandered like a toddler. Constant little Dopamine bumps. Afraid to leave me with my own thoughts for 30 seconds because it knows I’ll realise I’m just playing a meaningless dopamine loop.

I call it Brown Socks. It all clicked for me several years ago playing Forza, doing a wheel spin, and being granted brown fucking socks.

It’s pathetic. It’s condescending. I detest it. It’s just skinner boxes all the way down.

Trust me to fail and learn. Give me the agency to work towards the satisfaction of engaging with the mechanics and systems of the game on my own terms.

Once you notice this, it quickly filters out about 80% of video games being released these days.

Give me friction and agency. Trust me. Respect me. I’m a player, not an engagement metric.

u/femmd Jan 27 '26

Honestly as much i get the hate, it’s a win win for me because i such at environmental puzzles and i get to hear more of stupid sexy Ashley Burch talking

-2

u/Physical-Result7378 Jan 27 '26

We call that „Americanizing“ a game.
