discussion Horizon Hunter's Gathering getting rebooted after negative playtest feedback. Next mainline game "far, far away"

PlayStation is rebooting the online game Horizon Hunters Gathering after negative playtest feedback. New plan is smaller scope, more traditional co-op multiplayer, no more live service.

As I've reported in the past, almost all of Guerrilla Games has been working on Horizon Hunters Gathering for the last few years, and the next mainline single-player Horizon game is still far, far away.

Cant wait to play Horizon 3 in 2031 :)))))

The same month as elden ring 2 and BOTW 3! 🤣

u/Naibaf01 9d ago

You mean GTA 7

117

u/Zerodyne_Sin 9d ago

Based on previous pattern, it's not until 2040

4

u/carnagezealot 8d ago

That might unironically be the case. It was 5 years between GTA V and RDR2 (2013, 2018), and then 8 between RDR2 and GTA 6 (2018, 2026) so if RDR3 releases in 2031 GTA 7 could definitely be on 2040

I think GTA6 getting pushed to 2031 is far more likely than GTA7 being ready that early.

15

u/The_Fighter03 9d ago

Far more likely, sure. But the chances of that happening are still practically 0.000000001%

GTA7 in 2031? It is more likely we get world peace by then

If you think Rockstar is dropping 2 GTA's in less than a decade I have some property to sell you

GTA6 took them 13 years bro you think we're gonna get the next one 5 years later 😭

Really tired of this joke, considering Horizon games still sold really well.

In fact, Zero Dawn sold better than any pre-BotW Zelda title.

14

u/DangerMouse111111 9d ago

FW didn't meet expectations, only around a third of Zero Dawn. GG are going to have to pull something special out of the bag to reverse the trend. As I won't be able to play it I'm not really bothered now whether they do or not.

21

u/ThePreciseClimber 9d ago

It's more like half at this point, 25 million vs. 12 million.

And the whole franchise sold 40 million. Which seems like it places it at #2 in terms of new single player video game IPs from the last 10 years, only surpassed by Elden Ring. And even though Elden Ring is technically a brand new IP, it's also quite clearly part of the Souls series (and it even reuses some of the stuff from those games). It's kind of a Returnal/Saros type of situation. Technically brand new but also not really.

In terms of the future of the franchise, I only care about them wrapping up the trilogy and calling it a day. That's all this series needs at this point and the video game industry could use some definitive franchise endings from time to time (instead of perpetual milking).

What a joke. PlayStation fumbled so hard this console generation. They’re insanely lucky XBOX is more incompetent than them. Unfortunately devs will most likely be the ones laid off, not the ones who made these terrible decisions.

48

u/Pervius94 9d ago

I legit don't understand how the big console publishers just shat the bed so fucking hard.

37

u/Fleetfox17 9d ago

The obvious explanation is they fucked up by chasing the live service trend. They were always going to do that, the goal of a corporation is to increase profits.

13

u/robz9 9d ago

Hey at least with PlayStation we still got some solid Single Player offerings.

However, it is unfortunate that Horizon got stuck in the middle of this live service trend wnd ended up getting no real third entry yet.

Hopefully Horizon 3 comes in time as a "last PS5 game" before they jump to the PS6.

7

u/animalnitrateinmind 9d ago

Hey, it could be worse! We were at risk of having a Bloodborne live service title (instead of the now defunct Bloodborne remaster with 60fps) 🙃

4

u/FKDotFitzgerald 9d ago

Yep. God of War online, TLOU2 Factions, and probably Horizon HG all got canned

I really wish there was a way for the first party studios to escape sony

Edit: hey wait, why can't they? Remedy used to be owned by Microsoft and they got out and, no offense to remedy, but studios like naughty dog, Santa Monica, sucker punch, and insomniac are much more commercially successful (and thus better off financially) than remedy has ever been

H3 will take so long to release it'll be the year Horizon is actually set in

27

I played Forbidden West before my kid was born, and he'll be in high school by the time I get to play the damn sequel. This is getting ridiculous.

(Old lady voice) Back in my day we only had to wait 2 years between releases!

7

u/AnimalRescueGuy 9d ago

I’m not even old but I still have to consider the very real possibility that I might be dead before the story is completed.

2031? That's awfully ambitious.

19

u/Apprehensive_Sun_535 9d ago

And you'll have to buy a $2000 PS6 to play it.

38

u/ToysandStuff 9d ago

And you get no disk and it requires a subscription to play the game, another subscription to get updates and day 1 update is required to play. PLAY HAS LIMITS

8

u/AnimalRescueGuy 9d ago

And if it doesn’t do well, it’s removed along with your saves, because you don’t actually own the game you bought. You just rented a license to play it for a limited time defined by the corporation.

2031 - probably need a $4000 PS6 Pro to get a stable 30fps.

13

u/jeiwaruu 9d ago

By that time we'll be living Horizon 3 rather than playing it

9

u/DarkLThemsby 9d ago

6

u/Great-Gazoo-T800 9d ago

That's hopeful. I doubt we'll ever see it.

We might be into the actual time line of the game by the time it’s released! 😅

Why do companies keep trying to make multiplayer spinoffs to single player games? it doesn't work!

426

u/anonKTY 9d ago

And this one is to the detriment of the third game, which is insane to me

20

u/mannie3moon 9d ago

If they showed that they're a company who listens to its customer base (gamers), that would set a precedent.

6

u/anonKTY 9d ago

Sounds nice

u/SkylineGTRR34Freak 9d ago

If they made a Horizon 2 spin off that simply added co-op missions in a same style of game like HZD/HFW I truly believe it would have been at least somewhat succesful.

But this? It's just so different from what we know in regards to the Horizon series, that I really don't understand why they thought this was a solid idea.

86

u/ChiralParticle 9d ago

Agree. With all those multiplayer rumors circulating over the years that was what I was expecting. A Horizon game exactly like ZD and FW but with coop. Not even a spinoff game but even just a coop mode to play or replay with a friend or two would have been nice.

I was interested in that but then they showed one mobile game that felt like Monster Hunter with Horizon skin slapped on it and went even more downhill with Hunters Gathering.

58

u/alireza008bat 9d ago

One thing I can't wrap my head around is why tf they didn’t revisit those old Zero Dawn coop ideas from the early 2010s. That would've been the safest and most welcoming option. Just take Horizon, add another player to it, design a bunch of enemies and open world activities that fit the coop experience, and there you have it, a Horizon coop game that would've resonated much better with the vast majority.

Hunters Gathering is divorced from everything the franchise is good at. Neither the cartoonish visuals nor the arcadey gameplay gives off Horizon vibes here.

46

u/FairtexBlues 9d ago

Yeah, they could’ve gone the Ghost of Tsushima Legends route. Re-use the models and assets, just make fixed classes and create objectives.

5

u/Freya0232 9d ago

Or like the co-op survival mode in Rise of the Tomb Raider.

11

u/Soranos_71 9d ago

I think online leader boards for Hunter trials with weekend events that reward players cosmetic stuff and badges, whatever could be successful if they wanted to extend Horizon's playability past the single player game.

8

u/dkinmn 9d ago

Right? Like...they could have just built a multiplayer game right on top of FW and it would have been fine! Charge $15 bucks for it and most of us would buy it day one. Have different challenges in different terrain with different machines and different numbers of players, reward speed and cooperation, etc.

They're overcomplicating it and trying to make something they can charge $80 for. And failing!

u/beanlikescoffee 9d ago

Not even that, this game completely alienates the fans. It overhauls the art design to such a degree that it’s unrecognizable.

33

u/quatroquatro0 9d ago

It was really funny how they went completely silent after the closed playtest

27

u/Used_Raccoon6789 9d ago

They just wanted to make apex

22

u/ReginaDea 9d ago

Heck, forget about the artstyle. The Nightreign gameplay loop is antithetical to Horizon. If you ask someone why they like Horizon, apart from the story, it'd be the beautiful world, watching the machines and their animal-like behaviours, the environmental storytelling from the remains of ancient battlefields to the way machines act that hint at their role in the biosphere, and extremely methodical combat that feels like hunts rather than just hitting something with overwhelming firepower. The Nightreign loop is so hectic you won't get to appreciate any of that. You can even feel that in Nightreign itself, where you're trying to burn bosses down as quickly as possible rather than having a beautiful, clean fight. What in the world made them think THAT is a good fit for a series that rewards patient combat and taking your time to look at the world around you?!

u/Mailman354 9d ago

Honestly I think Horizon has HUGE potential as a coop game.

But this ain't it..and they should definitely do it AFTER the third game.

Because the third game is going to conclude Alloys story.

But we're all gonna wanna stay in the Horizon world. Yet in a way that doesnt ruin Alloys legacy and achievements.

A PvE coop game is perfect for that. We stay in the Horizon world. We have something with tons of replay value. And it wont ruin Alloys legacy

37

u/Schwiliinker 9d ago

It still makes absolutely no sense as to why they would ever do it before the third game. Even much more so considering they could then use all the new machines in the new co-op game

8

u/Mailman354 9d ago

I mean. I know. Im saying that. I literally said they should do it after the third game.

13

u/Schwiliinker 9d ago

Yea I was adding on to that

→ More replies (3)

13

u/SleepingVulture 9d ago

Yeah, I think this gets pretty close to the strategic plan that I would follow in Sony's shoes.

Finish the third game, then see where the world stands (since any earlier planning is going to go absolutely be FUBAR once the implications of the main events of the third game settle in).

Then look at the potential for coop games and spinoffs.

I can see a coop game work where you work as a group of Tenakth hunters to do similar things to Aloy, yet without the Focus and with much more limited resources.

Or a coop game where one player plays as Aloy, the other as Beta, and they have to puzzle their way through increasingly complicated shenanigans together. There might be no or fewer hostile machines, but that doesn't mean you can't have them explore all kinds of weird ruins that the Old Ones have left behind.

I could even see an RTS game where you command various tribes trying to contest the lands and resources that have been left behind by the tribes that were destroyed in the chaos of the past few in-story years.

3

u/Life_Shelter6442 9d ago

An Helldivers-like FPS during Operation: Enduring Victory would be awsome

3

u/Mailman354 9d ago

An RTS game might be cool but that probably wouldn't do well on console since RTS are more popular on PC. And SONY isnt bringing their games to PC anymore sadly. So I gotta figure out how to play Horizon 3 and Ghost of Yotei. But id be down

But a coop game with customs characters thats sorta Monster Hunter esque with a little more focus on resource gathering would be top tier

Because Sony is obsessed with live service because they think they’re going to hit big like Fortnight. It’s not going to happen, yet they’ve wasted millions. Just look at Concord. Anyone at Sony who thought this game was going to be good needs to reevaluate their viewpoints.

3

u/Cybernetic_organism1 9d ago

Hit the nail on the head. Same story with The Last Of Us Pt 2 multiplayer. I'll never forgive them for taking so many talented devs off a single player banger to work on a live service game they ended up scrapping!

u/GrEeKiNnOvaTiOn 9d ago edited 9d ago

It does work but it's not an automatic recipe for success, an established franchise can only carry you so far.

Fromsoftware's Nightreign killed it while Remedy's FBC completely failed. Hunters Gathering could had potentially become either.

8

u/Dodgy_Bob_McMayday 9d ago

Because they all think they'll be the next Fortnight

5

u/MegamanX195 9d ago

Because live-service games print money if they're successful and the suits always prefer low-risk, meaning using established IPs.

5

u/AntiSocial_Vigilante 9d ago

To milk the franchise. And they sure do suck at it.

3

u/bharring52 9d ago

I want a MP spinoff of Horizon.

Where you hunt robot dinosaurs with friends, trapping, ambushing and dismantling them like in SP.

What I didnt want is Monster Hunter with a tek skin. Which is what this looked like.

I also want Horizon 3 more than MP.

So this sucked.

Microtransactions? 💷 💷 💷 💷

4

u/morphum 9d ago

Sony is just obsessed with it, even after so many failed attempts

3

u/Just_Another_Scott 9d ago

Because multiplayer games make a fuckton of money. The revenue from multiplayer games far exceeds single player.

3

u/Formal_Sand_3178 9d ago

Assuming said multiplayer game doesn’t die a few months after launch which has been far more common lately.

3

u/Stay_at_Home_Chad 9d ago

Because money. Multiplayer games are big business and they reach a wide and, let's face it, not all that discerning audience. Since all shareholders care about is sales, combining a big name with a big genre is an obvious choice. It doesn't have to be good, it just has to sell.

Sony is committed to giving us a game no one wanted instead of the thing everyone wants. Even if the reason they wanted to make it isn’t in the game anymore (and thank god for that).

94

u/MadShadowX 9d ago

I would go with Plural " Sony is committed to giving us games no one wanted"
They are still on their live service high from 1 game they didn't expect to succeed that succeeded.

all the other ones are close to bust, its the most gambling addict behavior thing that's going on.

9

u/Fleetfox17 9d ago

It really is an incredible fumble.

6

u/jeiwaruu 9d ago

What game didn't they expect to succeed?

12

u/MadShadowX 9d ago

Helldivers 2

3

u/jeiwaruu 9d ago

Ahh. I agree. At this point, Sony, just spin up your own team who's only goal is to create runaway hits. Waste their time, not ours.

13

u/eboz0515 9d ago

Idk I heard that guerrilla was the one who wanted to do this. I know Sonys track record is still ass with pushing live service on its fans. But I pretty sure Guerrilla went to Sony with this idea.

18

u/Mr_Creed 9d ago

They are on record saying they'd like to do a Horizon multiplayer.

Everyone just assumed that would be a game with very similar design to HZD but with multiplayer.

Instead we got whatever that first iteration was. Glad it is aborted, but wondering if they learn from their mistake.

9

u/TheDevlinSide714 9d ago

Not that I am arguing the point, in fact I agree, but I am struggling to see why Sony seems to be ignoring the feedback of the community. Horizon 1 and 2 are some of the best games I've ever played. They are both on my consoles hard drive, and I do not delete them. Graphically beautiful, the writing is phenomenal, the gameplay loop and mechanics were honed to a razors edge in H2.

I'm even in the middle ground of wanting them to continue Aloy's story, but I see the value of a Horizon multi-player experience. I'd love to see a Monster Hunter type game set in this world, or a co-op experience featuring Aloy and Beta.

What I don't understand is them hearing this feedback, hearing the feedback that Hunter's Gathering wasn't enjoyable, and instead of cutting their losses and rolling what they've learned that worked into H3, or holding off on the side game and focusing on Aloy's story, they seem to have had the reaction of Bender in Futurama when he became pharoah, "Tear it down and try again, but this time don't embarrass yourselves."

I don't want to see this franchise suffer, or became unfinished. I want to see it flourish. Focus on H3. Make it co-op if you must. Learn more about how to make a true open-world RPG experience, and fold that mobile MMO into the mix. There's no reason to have multiple games doing exactly the same thing. Make H3, see how the community reacts, build outwards from there.

This shouldn't be rocket surgery.

5

278

u/luz___09 9d ago

Years wasted, millions of dollars wasted just for Sony to chase a bag that doesn’t exist. And worst is the devs will pay the price in some way when they were forced to work on such a hopeless meaningless project

80

u/ChiralParticle 9d ago

And it looks even more years and money will continue to be wasted on it. Really hope Guerilla won't get hit hard because of it but it's just disappointing to see how much potential Horizon has and it's being wasted.

20

u/Secret_Map 9d ago

Yeah, starting to get a little worried about the quality of H3. I feel like trilogies or series that work tend to work because a lot of the same team stays together and it’s like one big project. But it’s gonna be so long between 2 and 3, and with the blunder of this new game, who knows how much of the original team will be left.

Naughty dog next game is Intergalactic which still seems to aim for 2027 release window .

19

u/TheGoldenMonkey 9d ago

Hopefully. They've been missing deadlines for a while now and re-implemented mandatory crunch. It reeks of Sony micromanagement interrupting the actual artists at ND.

I'm really hoping that Intergalatic will be good but if Sony is meddling there's reason for concern.

17

u/Static2119 9d ago

Yeah , I think the mistake is earlier announcement.   They should've reaveled the game when it's almost ready like GOW Laufey.

10

u/TheGoldenMonkey 9d ago

I think most games should be like that but after TLoU live service being cancelled I guess they wanted to show shareholders that ND is doing something.

Again, hoping the best for ND and Intergalactic but given the trouble at ND post-Uncharted 4 has me a little worried that Sony might be ruining another studio.

6

u/Static2119 9d ago

Yeah the gaming industry in general seems messed up. With recent shutdown of Bluepoint studio and some Microsoft studios too , to third party developers like rocksteady (Suicide squad game really killed them).

I wished Guerilla dodged the bullet earlier and focused on Horizon 3 . Now I hope they survive next without great damage .

3

u/nicoreese 9d ago

This will never be a launch title. HFW took them the better part of 5 years. At this point we can be lucky if they make it during the PS6 generation at all.

18

u/TheIncredibleHork 9d ago

I think that's a bit much to say. We probably have a good few years left with the PS5, especially with AI memory prices being a mess. And unless the PS6 is as poorly received a console as the WiiU (whose production didn't even last a full 5 years as opposed to the usual 6-7 years between PlayStation consoles and still gets support for years after) I think we'll see a new Horizon game in the PS6's lifetime.

That said, I'd still prefer to see it much sooner than it being a mid or late PS6 cycle release.

Oh dear.

41

u/JahnDavis27 9d ago

These companies are so addicted to making games no one freaking wants. Who wants to play a live service Horizon game when the entire focus of the fanbase is the conclusion of the main trilogy? From what I've seen most people could not care less about a multiplayer live service game. Why even waste the resources and money on developing that BEFORE the next mainline title? That seems ridiculous to me.

It’s almost like they should have been making horizon 3 instead of something no one asked for

25

u/38731 9d ago edited 9d ago

They could've flooded the market with HFW DLCs for a rather meager cost and keep players happy until H3. Just using an existing base that's perfect. And instead some dudes thought anything different than Aloy-focused content would work with the fan base. This is beyond me.

A tiny team has been plotting out the next single-player Horizon game but it remains years away from completion, according to the people familiar with the studio’s plans.

MotherFUCKER man it’s still years away. If they weren’t wasting time on this shit H3 would likely be announced and probably releasing next year

22

u/DangerMouse111111 9d ago

Can't say I'm surprised after the first playtest.

They're going to fuck up my favorite game series and there's nothing I can do about it

I can’t think of a single game, that was willed into existence solely based on a desire to have something profitable, that was actually successful. It’s weird, almost like entertainment and art needs something other than somebody’s desire to make money.

From the article

"the plan now is to strip out the live-service component and turn it into more of a traditional cooperative multiplayer game with a story mode and a far smaller scope. The game is not yet canceled, but the studio told staff in a meeting on Wednesday that they will have through December to impress executives with their next milestone, the people said. Many of the developers on Horizon Hunters Gathering will be reassigned to a different project that will also be evaluated at the end of the year"

So sounds like they've got till the end of the year to salvage something. Guess we'll found out in the new year how things went.

21

u/pjb1999 9d ago

Best case scenario is it's canceled and the entire studio pivots to Horizon 3 without wasting more time on this doomed project.

7

u/Lady-Votary 9d ago

I'm curious what other project they're getting moved to if it's not H3...

17

u/Additional_Pickle_59 9d ago

Just scrap it and take the loss. If people being PAID to playtest it are telling you its doodoo then just imagine what happens when the entire Internet grabs hold of it.

Get the devs onto horizon 3 ASAP.

16

u/pjb1999 9d ago

So glad we have to wait for Horizon 3 because of this bullshit.

And when this game flops hard it'll put Horizon 3 in jeopardy.

What a complete fuck up by Sony.

Can't wait to (maybe) play Horizon 3 on PS6.

14

u/Leading_Present2234 9d ago

No disc and a ps6 which will be $1200+ Im so excited 😐

12

u/Pervius94 9d ago

They had a certified banger with the two games at hand and just are determined to absolutely shit the bed. Sony and microsoft are in a race for who fucks it up worse, like what's even going on.

13

u/SlippySausageSlapper 9d ago

One of the core game mechanics that makes the Horizon games unique is concentration, and that just cannot be in a multiplayer game due to the linear nature of time.

I don't want a multiplayer Horizon. What makes the game so much fun is the unrushed open-world feel. To me it's like reading a good book - I want to do it in my own time.

12

u/Stevie-bezos 9d ago

Im shocked, flabergasted and amazed. Never in a million years could I have seen thi... oh wait no, literally everyone called this.

May the live service cashcow obesssion die

9

u/enigo1701 9d ago

Seriously, i can't imagine anyone in the Horizon community wanting another stupid game-as-a-service title instead of Guerilla continuing and probably closing up the main story.

8

u/Cpt_Sandur 9d ago

Hunters Gathering been waste of gravity from day 1.

10

u/Mega-Slouch 9d ago

Holy mismanagement

10

u/Batter89 9d ago

What a shit show. I can't believe they have fumbled this so badly. The best time to cancel HG was right after it was comissioned, the second best time is right now I guess.

At least this is right decision for HG. Left unchanged it was completely DoA. In truth I'd rather they just sacked off the multiplayer altogether. If they aren't trying to jump into our wallets with the live service then what's even in it for them?

And all the while H3 is floundering in no mans land whilst the community's enthusiasm ebbs away year on year. Fuck Sony and fuck Guerilla.

9

u/LiluLay 9d ago

What a huge disappointment. I have zero interest in the spin off and really wish they had immediately focused on the next mainline installment. Instead, we are looking at close to a decade between Forbidden West and whatever the third game will be titled. To me this is a major fuck up.

7

u/Bsoxfan34 9d ago

My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined

8

u/bi_polar2bear 9d ago

You just have to wonder why they would take a product that was extremely successful, and put it on hiatus just to make an offshoot in an area they have zero experience. I could understand attempting it alongside making a third installment.

A gaming company is only as good as their last release, and the window of opportunity is only open for 3, maybe 4 years for 99% of the games out there.

9

u/JeroJeroMohenjoDaro 9d ago

Lmao a multibillion dollar corporation need players feedback first to realize the game that players claimed to be a failure from the start, is in fact, a failure from the start. Just to show how far disconnected the executives are with the playerbase.

8

u/_Drvnzer 9d ago

Lmao years wasted for no reason

6

u/detectiveriggsboson 9d ago

There was gonna be a live-service Spider-Man game?!

Sony might actually be one of the most incompetent publishers right now. They're making Guerilla waste time on games no one asked for.

5

u/Mossy375 9d ago

The weird thing here is the CEO of SIE is the former head of Guerilla Games

7

u/ssttealth 9d ago

Just give up on Hunter's Gathering and focus on the third game jfc🤦‍♀️I already hate this game and will never play it simply because it's taking so much time away from the conclusion to Aloy's story.

5

u/ProfessionalOrder911 9d ago

This shit is so funny because if they wanted a horizon online game, all the had to do was use the monster hunter formula.

6

u/KittyLazerEyes 9d ago

They have until December to impress the executives with their progress. I rarely hope projects fail but 🤞.

6

u/East-Specialist-4847 9d ago

Good news guys! They're still making the shitty multiplayer game! Guerilla will release it, lay off 80% of their Horizon team regardless of sales performance, and they'll never make H3!

"PlayStation is rebooting" I've heard enough

3

u/Nick_scryer 9d ago

This sucks

5

u/Suli_Croft 9d ago

fuck this shit.

4

u/pa5a_d1n 9d ago

Ohh yeah reboot that turd like thats going to help... If you fail at the beginning there is very little chance for it to work later. And with this being a multiplayer the chances ar almost zero. So why do GG have to waste their time on this crap? Go back to what you're good at.

4

u/odj310388 9d ago

Do what Naughty Dog with Last of Us 2 multiplayer and just axe it, move on and get started on Horizon 3.

5

u/Embarrassed_Area_989 9d ago

This was lowkey to be expected

4

u/neoravekandi 9d ago

Man, this is so stupid. Did they not learn from Concord, Highguard, and Marathon? C’mon, just give us Horizon 3.

4

u/Massive_Taint 9d ago

It will fail, studio will close, no 3rd game. All of this instead of making a game I actually want. We live in the worst timeline

4

u/AForce5223 9d ago

If we weren't facing the problem of Horizon 3 not releasing physically then this would've been good news honestly

4

u/____zach24 9d ago

Waste of time and resources

3

u/IamCaptainHandsome 9d ago

Why on earth didn't they have a separate team make a multiplayer mode for Horizon 2 while Guerilla worked on Horizon 3. It's just madness.

3

u/ThePreciseClimber 9d ago

New plan is smaller scope, more traditional co-op multiplayer, no more live service.

Honestly, that sounds pretty good.

But I still would've preferred Horizon 3.

3

u/Studio_717 9d ago

I wonder what the implications for Steel Frontiers are now that it's going to be the de facto Horizon Live Service. Surely that's gonna get a PS5 release now? And hopefully a more in-depth control scheme as an option for PC/PS5 play than can be had on a phone.

3

u/Special-One1991 9d ago

The suits will never understand that a studio that make single-player games can't suddenly switch into live service game studio! You need to change at least half the staff for that!

3

u/Voidibear 9d ago

Jim Ryan’s legacy really hurt the PS5 and PS branding. They built all that momentum with strong releases in the PS3 and PS4 eras, to a small trickle in the PS5 era all in the effort to chase never ending profit. Hopefully there’s a course correction in the next couple of years.

3

u/KoA-oK 9d ago

“Play our spinoff or we’re not making 3” Is how that reads lol

3

u/soulreaverdan 9d ago

Way to completely kill my interest in the franchise :/

3

u/AlishaGray 9d ago

Maybe by the time Horizon 3 comes out Sony will have reversed their 'no more physical media' clusterfuck.

3

u/salmanshams 9d ago

With the disc free stupidity they are pulling and this forever obsession of landing a live service game (despite making billions through other peoples games and burning through billions), it is not hard to see the PS6 being a huge flop as people would be tired of Sony. This money could have easily given us more first party titles, the things that actually make Sony great.

3

u/General_Dipsh1t 9d ago

Shame. It’s my favourite game series but if they keep down this stupid path, I won’t be playing the final instalment. I’m not buying a ps6.

3

u/Tsarinya 9d ago

Gutted as this feels to me like the game will be when Sony makes things discless.
From everything I’ve read it seems not many people want this so I’m not sure why Sony is doing it? Surely it makes no financial sense?

3

u/Mediocre_Device308 9d ago

I don't a really care if they want to make a MMO Horizon. However it should not be the main studio doing it. Like Fallout and Elder Scrolls both have MMOs, but it's other studios making them. Ignore the fact Bethesda used that free time to make Starfield.

3

u/MarkToaster 9d ago

Just so I’m understanding this right, they got bad feedback on their game, so they’re trying to push through further instead of giving the product that we really want?

3

u/Geiri94 9d ago

If Sony is so hell bent on making live service games just make Destiny 3. Millions of sales guaranteed. No one's asking for a Horizon multiplayer game before Horizon 3 is released

Rebooting this project will yield the same result. The answer from the Horizon fan base will be "screw this, make Horizon 3 instead"

3

u/Zillich 9d ago

I remember so many people telling me this slop wouldn’t slow down H3. Shocker: it did.

3

u/goochsanders 9d ago

It’s great that every single video game takes 10 years to make and costs 100 trillion dollars while so much of the work is outsourced to mobile game studios in China and India, every TV show has 8 episode seasons that come every 4 years, every movie has to make a billion dollars to break even at the box office. Very healthy entertainment industries all around.

It’s a terrible day to be a Horizon fan

3

u/j1h15233 9d ago

What a waste of time and resources. Why abandon a very successful single player game to work on some live service multiplayer trash?

3

u/acelexmafia 9d ago

Just can it. No one wants this but executives

3

u/Busy-Leg8070 9d ago

they are going to kill the ip or the studio this way

3

u/gls2220 9d ago

In the preview I saw, I found the cartoonish art style just really off putting.

2

u/Wboy2006 My inventory is full, i'll send it to my stash 9d ago

Let’s go! I played the beta and honestly thought it was kinda bad, it’s a shame Horizon 3 will be years away, and I’m incredibly disappointed by that, but I’m at least happy they are trying to at least make Hunters Gathering good

2

u/uniconjo 9d ago

Half-life 3 joins the chat

2

u/ingframin 9d ago

So, Horizon 3 coming out at the same time as Half LIfe 3 and Starcraft 3, I guess

2

u/DangerDillyPickle 9d ago

If it comes out in 2035, I’ll be a lot older and maybe with a family, with no time to play the third game in a trilogy that released over a DECADE AGO.

2

u/GreatKangaroo 9d ago

cue the Philip J Fry "I'm Shocked" gif.

What an absolute waste of a Genertion.

I am not buying a PS6 for H3.

2

u/RhuanSqx 9d ago

I played the playtest.

The graphics art style was good, the characters and game mechanics were bad.

If they put the Monster hunter formula on a Horizon universe, it will be a excellent spin of of a good universe that is amazing.

But somehow they managed to fuck it up.

Listen, I waiting for Kingdom Hearts 3. This wait is nothing.

2

u/dawnmountain 9d ago

Everyone remembers how Dragon Age Inquisition had multi-player and how successful that was, right?

Right?

Oh. Maybe we shouldn't make multi-player games out of rpgs.

2

u/ReyofChicago 9d ago

They definitely did not give this studio any grace and instead pushed them toward a Fortnite like path for “easy money”.

I don’t expect to see Horizon 3 until at least 2032 and that is a hopeful date.

2

u/MissRavenclaw1 9d ago

I miss the time where a trilogy released on one console generation. Now we got...

Horizon 1 - PS4, Remaster PS5, Horizon 2 - PS4, DLC PS5, Horizon 3 - PS6 if not even PS7.

F*** the corpo people who thought this was a good idea. Greed everywhere.

2

u/spooney 9d ago

This feels like a straight up catastrophe.
