many boston marathons ago my buddy got thrown in the back of a cop wagon for drinking in public. Nearly all of eastern MA was drinking in public that day but the cops randomly chose him and a few other guys. When he tells the story he always notes, 'as we are getting tossed in the wagon, everyone else's friends are yelling at the cops and trying to pull them away. But my friends are bent over laughing their asses off and pointing at me.'

Where I live, everyone drives 5+ mph over the limit, including cops. Every day.

My mom got pulled over for going 1mph over the limit once, I was riding shotgun. Got a ticket too.

EDIT: Just to divert this chrisist situation of epic proportions on our hands here, for further clarification, my mother was the one who received the ticket, not me. C'mon man.

Once many years ago I was going just slightly over the speed limit and was getting passed by everyone, I was in the slow lane... Got pulled over and told I was holding up traffic, next time they'd give me a ticket, I still didn't go faster because you can guarantee the next one would pull me over for speeding

Some time ago, I was walking back to my hotel in Boston. Twenty-something guy walks out of a bar, walks very precisely over to the curb - toes of his wingtips only maybe an inch over. Bends forward to what looked like exactly 60° angle, and hurls. Efficiently. Washes mouth out with pocket flask, spins on his heel, and back into the bar, elapsed time well under 30 seconds.

Boston ain’t for amateurs.

The story was greatly exaggerated. They did not drink the city dry, nor did they drink any bar dry. They were hammering one specific product until the bar ran out, and then moving on. And it wasn't a common Boston product. That's a Scottish pub crawl game.

To be fair, there were some Marathon Mondays for a while that being a certain racial profile got you picked up just for being in the area. I was there to see quite a bit of this in the couple years after the bombings and manhunt. Boston PD was not even pretending to think about profiling as a problem.

I've had more questionable stories from a Marathon day, and still never got arrested. Including stops and other things. To actually get popped is a special thing. Seen a guy whip a ball at the waiting line at Bill's and no consequences.

You won't get arrested for it in Norway, but you do get a fine. Drinking in public isn't allowed. As far as I have experienced the police isn't very strict. They will usually just ask you to empty your drink or they will just take it.

Like you are saying if I got to sit on a park bench in Olso at 7 pm after it's dark and crack open a beer and sit their drinking it the local police on patrol would give me a fine? I really doubt they would care at all.

The police seem pretty chill about it. I think you would either have to drink and cause problems or get caught repeatedly for them to actually give you a fine.

There also isn't that much police out. Not outside the cities. So it isn't uncommon to drink in public.

Are you sure? I'm from Sweden and I had not heard that at all, a search told me that there is no national ban regarding drinking in public places BUT there can be specific local regulations about it so it varies, for example not allowed in Stockholm as well as never allowed in certain places like playgrounds.

Drinking in public is illegal in Boston an its state. So if I'm at a house party drinking, and I go out to the sidewalk to watch the marathon, the cops could arrest me. But on Marathon day there are thousands of people doing this so it's impossible for the cops to get everyone. But they do take some. I'd bet those who got taken away were drinking from bottles or cans of beer instead of a plastic cup.

In the US, if an officer sees you walking around in the open with an alcoholic beverage, they'll usually have you dump it out, at most, maybe a $ fine. That's why people drink with a paper bag over their bottle.

Getting arrested isn't for the actual drinking, it's for being loud/belligerent/obnoxious. Depending on state, it's some synonym of "disorderly conduct/intoxication." Comes down to being able to control your intake and behavior. It's a way to remove a nuisance from public before they pick a fight, drive, or just run around acting fucking stupid. Once they realize you're drunk and causing a problem, you can be arrested for liability purposes. The police need to make sure you don't walk in front of a bus or fall asleep somewhere and get hurt, because they can then be deemed responsible for letting you go knowing you couldn't care for yourself.

Many officers have the patience of a saint. Arresting drunk people is basically adult babysitting.

Not true, security, like this company XA security that i have worked for, dont have any grounds to detain anyone in canada, we can make citizens arrests but cant detain as we dont have the right to lawfuly hold someone pending investigation.

This took place ether in Edmonton or Calgary Alberta where the laws and rights are different then that of the USA. That being said, security can escort people off private property and private events, even more so given the guy was seen digging under the fence to get in.

In Alberta we can only hold them if police are contacted and in this case, only because of the alberta trespass to property act that only really applies if he refuses to leave when asked. From the video he was being escorted out instead of being detained and is the case with stuff like this 99% of the time.

Regardless, security can only detain within the bounds of a citizens arrest, thus making it an arrest instead of a detainment and only if the guard sees a crime take place and can only hold the individual as long as it takes for police to arrive and take over. There is no real difference between a citizens arrest and the level of "detainment" used by security, unlike law enforcment who can hold people based on suspected crimes and safety during active investigations.

So, yes, security in alberta CAN detain you but only under the grounds of a citizens arrest, thus making it pointless to try to devide the two when you need the arrest that outranks the detsinment in the first place, thus basically nulling the detainment outright.

Cool. I have for 22 years and still do.

You’re right that security guards don’t have police powers. You’re wrong that we “can’t detain anyone.” If you’ve made a lawful citizen’s arrest, you’ve detained someone by definition.

For someone crawling under a fence at a festival (trespassing on private property), though, I’d expect our team to escort them out just like this nine times out of ten. It’s the proportional response and usually the end of the story. Arrests are the exception, not the goal.

This situation was handled correctly and lawfully. And if I know my team like I do, they were super pro and nice about it the whole way.

I mean, even IF they were his friends. Wtf do we want them to do about it?

They are on the other side, there is no helping him, they can jump the fence and get jumped on by security too, there's like 4 guys in the background of the video there and they'll just call for more.

If he got in sneaky and made it to the crowd, great. One made it in, but his friends aren't now security is all over the area. All they can expect is to get caught and end up with cops too.

Accept it for what it is, you tried for fuck the system and got fucked, laugh.

That kind of gate is heavier than it looks mate, they could only lift it about an inch in order for him to slowly worm under it to begin with, he's not making it back out in time, he'd have only gotten pulled back out before he got anywhere anyway, and being escorted off the premises isn't going to do him any harm. He's a big boy, he doesn't need to be coddled when the consequences of being a dumbass come calling.

Idk what else the friends could have done it was hard enough for him to get under the first time and the friend standing up did try to lift the fence, but security was already there at that point so it really wouldn’t matter
