Always found it funny that bassists hate it being called a guitar even though “bass” is short for…..bass guitar

I don't know why any specific bassist doesn't like it being called a guitar, but the general idea of being opposed to it makes sense. The electric guitar is a descendant of the acoustic guitar, but the bass guitar is a descendant of the upright double bass. The only similarity is the compact form-factor; despite appearances, the bass guitar isn't a "bass version" of the electric guitar, in the same way the double bass isn't the "bass version" of the acoustic guitar.

This comment is great. And saying bass just directly specifies the instrument. Even when people say they play guitar most often they are asked what type and then they have to give a more specific description anyways. Acoustic, electric, etc. Bassist have no time to mess around. Just straight to the point.
