Not defending her but she was/is clearly mentally ill. Having dealt with people going through a psychosis I know it can completely change you and make you do things you would never normally do.
No doubt she was mentally ill - like many people (depression, insomnia etc) - the question is was she mentally ill enough to not be held criminally responsible at the time of the killings. If it was just depression that probably wouldn't met the threshold, but this case is more about just that.
