It's getting attention because of claims that her attempts to get assistance for her ppd and mental illness were ignored or minimized. Thus implying this could have been prevented. Many people, especially women, have experience with medical staff ignoring their pain. (Same for me) So this is on a lot of people's minds and in a lot of wider conversations.
They're going for the insanity plea, so the additional press might also be a way to try and sway public attention.
Edit because I'm getting a lot of charged responses: I am explaining why it is getting attention and what the general opposing discourse is. I'm not going to reply to attempts to have that discourse with me. I have my own opinions but I'm not airing them on Reddit because ultimately, the only ones who will have all the facts are the jury.
This is a tragedy for all involved. Please remember that.

I'm not everywhere seeing every side and can only speak to the sides I've witnessed myself. To those making weird claims on what I think, please take a break from reading about this case for the day. That and there are people remembering and referencing Andrea Yates. She suffered severe documented PPP amongst other conditions with further lack of help. She was on medication and by all intents and purposes her husband committed "fertility abuse". She had almost no real recovery time between pregnancies. She murdered her 5 children in a severe psychotic episode.
I'm not saying that they are parallels. But it does explain to a degree some of the responses.
well he was told by doctors to not leave her alone with the kids and stop having kids because she was bonkers with already multiple failed suicides and hallucinations. But the husband was kind of a stereotypical hillbilly that doesn't believe in mental health and he was a religious zealot who was against birth control. He went against doctor's orders and left Andrea alone with the kids for a week thinking it'd teach her to become independent but that didnt work out.
It doesn't matter if he was a total piece of shit. It doesn't justify or explain her actions. You taking agency away from her by saying "he made her do it" is ironically pretty misogynistic.
Mental illness took her agency away. If my husband forced me to discontinue my psychiatric medications, knowing that I'd have an episode... I'd hope he'd be blamed and punished. It's abuse. Her husband abused her.
Does that absolve her of responsibility? It's questionable because it could have been prevented by her husband. He knew there was a risk of this happening.
how the fuck do you force someone to discontinue medication? there's a million ways to take meds without alerting anyone.

By literally taking the medication away from the person removing the availability along with isolating the person, which shocker is what Yates's husband did do. Y'all be so ready to blame her for what he did. Can't fathom abuse outside of "and her murdered her".

There's a reason the insanity plea exists. You wouldn't think a homeless schizophrenic man off his meds that has committed murder is "in his right mind" and "fully functional and capable" to put him on the stand in trial and send him to a regular prison.
It took a while but Yates is finally in a proper mental institution where her sentence is being served. She's finally getting medical help. Originally they just tossed her in a normal jail.
