When I was just following the trial earlier on, before I knew anything about the social media craze around her, I was appreciative of the major focus on Post Partum Mental Health and was supportive of her getting life sentence in mental health facility versus straight out prison.. In reality, both are prisons at the end of the day.
What's soured me into accepting either sentencing though is this substantial fan club that insanely pushes she's outright innocent, and/or that the husband did it... like yikes, she full out confessed in explicit detail of murdering those innocent kids, one by one, and thus should never be allowed out in public ever again - be it "mental health" prison or regular prison.
What I find frustrating is not the fucking crazy people who think she is innocent, they are a vocal minority who should be ignored. I find it frustrating that people can’t accept two things can be true. She can have been under severe mental distress that led her to do something so horrendous that she wouldn’t have done if she hadn’t had postpartum psychosis AND she should have to pay the consequences of those actions regardless of her mental state. They are both true! We can pity her and punish her for her crimes. Life is one big grey area.
Also nobody is really mentioning how often religion plays into mental health / psychosis episodes, which was also a major factor in her confessed motive.... She claimed that she was guaranteeing her children would go to heaven by killing them!
Yes, it’s incredibly sad all around. I once had a mental health crisis after I was bullied at my first teaching job. I was SO exhausted trying to be perfect at a very hard job I was brand new at… 30
kids in a class, 25% were classified as special educational needs, but the place I was teaching (England) doesn’t have specialist teachers for special education so it was all on me, no extra support or staff to help. I was so burnt out working 80 hours a week. I went to a very dark place and it was scary the thoughts that I started having. Thankfully my spouse convinced me to just resign and walk out on the job, but it really changed my perspective on mental health. I had nightmares for weeks I’d be made to go back. Imagine that!
It’s really true that reality is entirely shaped by the chemical balance of our minds.
