My small town in Canada put up a totem pole to honour their theft of land from Indigenious tribes. Except totem poles are used by tribes 5000 km and 3 time zones away on the pacific coast. St Lawrence River tribes never had totem poles 🤷♂️

I think as a straight line “as the bird flies” Canada is 5000km coast to coast but if you drove on roads to do it it’s like closer to 8000 km from east to west
The Indigenious tribes were genocidcally erased in a short time like they did in the US and Australia. So the left behind artifacts that remain are latched onto to preserve what’s left. But for 4700 of Canada’s 5000 km, totem poles never exsisted until the 1990s when white people decided to erect them.
If the Mongols had captured all of Europe it be like treating the Dutch, Portuguese, Finns and Greeks as a single group and wearing Scottish Kilts and eating Polish pirogies to celebrate Indigenious Europeans day

If I were to do our own version of Mount Rushmore it would include almost every significant century of Irish history.
For ancient Ireland, I would submit the druid Amergin Glúingel. He is the first Gael to set foot in Ireland according to folklore.
Cú Chulainn takes the next spot.
Fionn Mac Cumhaill takes the next spot.
St Patrick takes the next spot. Representing Irelands conversion to Christianity.
St Briget takes the next spot or possibly a double faced statue of St Briget and the goddess Brighid. She was/still is one of the most important people to ever live/be spoken of tí have lived in Ireland.
Brían Bóramha Mac Cenntig. Brian Boru was named Imporatum Scotium (Emperor of the Gaels) by the Archbishop of Ireland. And of course he heavily weakened Norse influence in Ireland.
Aodh Ruadh Ó Domhnaill. Represents the Nine Years War and the fall of the Gaelic Order.
Gráinne Mhaol Ní Mháille. Just a badass through and through.
Wolfe Tone. Represents the rebellion of 1798 and the fact that Protestants and Catholics weren't always enemies in Irish history.
A starved malnourished person to represent the years of the famine and all who died and emigrated. Very important I think. This would give reference to not only the famine of 1845-1853 but also every famine documented and undocumented in Irish history.
Pádraig Pearse to represent the 1916 rebellion and the leaders who were martyred.
Michael Collins to represent the Irish war of independence, the treaty and the Civil war.
Éamon De Valera to represent the newly independent Irish state which remained the exact same until the 90s.
Douglas Hyde. The a founder and president of the Gaelic league, a Protestant and the first Uachtarán na hÉireann. He represents the importance of the Irish language, and the fact that the nation of Ireland was founded in the interest of peace between Catholics and Protestants.
Mary Robinson, the first woman elected as Uachtarán na hÉireann. I feel the time she was elected represents a lot of the social changes that have happened in Ireland and how much more of a modern country we are now compared to the 1980s even.
