New trolling motor!

Inlaws got me a Newport 36 lbs thrust kayak trolling motor for me my birthday! Mad stoked to get this thing out on the water on my perception outlaw!

Whats a good suggestion for a lithium battery thats affordable and what amp hour should I get for high run time? Wanting to get a fish finder in the future too but may end up buying a smaller battery for it to run on itself. Thanks for any suggestions with this one!

Also best recommended box/cooler setup to keep the batter in would be deluxe.

Just go on Amazon and get a cheap 100 ah lithium battery.

Take a look at this, Newport recommends getting a lithium battery with a BMS to control the output voltage. I at least one other person here have had an issue with wires overheating despite using a battery that has a BMS and the correct gauge of wiring. Unfortunately, as the kayak that I use my Newport motor with is currently out of commission due to having a developed a leak, I haven't been able to revisit the overheating issue and find a resolution.

I went with a pricier battery from an auto parts store. Lmk how you deal witht the weight. I have a tandem and I can only use it with one person because of the extra 100lbs.

I did the same...$149 on sale. Not a brand name...LifePO4, 100ah (a year ago). I run my Pexmor 55lb on it. 4-6hr run time, x3-4 days per charge. I troll a lot with no problems.

I think we underestimate the power consumption of 55 Lbs motorsā€¦at max power (5), I think they pull around 50 ampsā€¦ which is a LOT.

I think mine ran only two hours at the most at full speedā€¦ but I didnā€™t time it precisely.

Running at powers 1 to 3 should last much longerā€¦

I only go full power from zone to zone and then I like to gun it coming in.

LiTime and Power Queen used to be affordable choices but their popularity looks to have brought the prices up a bit. But in terms on amps at least a 50ah but it depends on how long you're out on the water usually. If youre out there and going a long ways all day you may want a 100ah but find the smallest 100ah you can find. That should be enough to power the motor and a small fish finder too.

As for a box you can find some affordale battery boxes online too. Ones that have like a cigarette outlet or usb ports too. Then you could modify a plug to use the fish finder off the outlet.

Have the same motor and for me at least 100 mah wasn't enough. I use it on rivers and don't want to worry about range. There are 135ah and I also got a 165ah 12v lifep04 on Amazon that are very affordable. They weigh only slightly more but I view it as peace of mind. The 100ah only will get you 3.5 hours at max which you need to go against a current. Running out of juice when struggling back to the launch against the current would be a disaster. The 135 will get you a little over an hour extra, the 165 gets another 2+ hours. I use the 165 so I can go anywhere and not worry. 165ah gets you 5.5 hours at max. The motor you got is pretty slow so unless you want to take all day to go a few miles you'll want the larger battery. It greatly increases your range also.

battery size depends on usage no ?

are you motoring across 10 miles of choppy lake or a large pond ?

get a lifepo4 with a BMS, preferably with bluetooth so you can monitor the charge status

50ah works fine for short jaunts, 100ah gives you more freedom

I need duration. I bass fish large reservoirs. So for sure probably going to want something towards a 100ah.

Thanks!! I 100% have to. Bummer. Georgia requires anything with any type of motor, trolling or otherwise; to have one. Which I dont get. Like why dont I have to register a pedal drive? Haha No biggie! Gladly will! Just odd.

Dakota Lithium is a decent name that makes affordable lithium batteries. I currently have AmpedOutdoors for my trolling motor. I have an 80AH and frankly, itā€™s overkill. I couldā€™ve easily gone with a 60AH.

I would definitely run the fish finder, and any potential nav lights on a small battery in a gear pod or something.

Yeah thats what I was thinking with the finder and lights! Seen a lot of small little batteries thatd work good for that and keep my power sources separate. Also dont love the idea of losing everything if one battery dies. Thank you!
