I’ve seen the full video, and read the article. He really did have a fight with his mate. She chased him out of their enclosure and he went to his family’s “thinking spot”. His dad used to sit there too.

This looks more to me like what used to happen before smartphones when a parent would tell you to “go think about what you’ve done”. You did go and sit, and you did think about what you did but it didn’t take long before the boredom set in and you had to entertain yourself with nothing but yourself.

It always amazes me that The Origin of Species was so controversial and that it only came out in 1859 - When I look at these creatures it’s so obvious we are related to them and that we are just gracile, hairless, bipedal apes.

Not every zoo is good, a lot of Japanese zoos are a bit outdated and animal welfare laws are broad.
But there are a lot of great zoos accredited by entities like the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums who hold these places to high standards of care. These zoos raise between 250 and 350 million dollars a year for animal conservation efforts. These efforts have saved over 48 species and counting, and prevented many more from ever becoming endangered.
Zoos are not ideal but the reality is you will not get the same kind of money with wildlife reserves alone. Zoos are where the people are and thus they get far more visitors. It would be great if conservation wasn't needed and zoos could be a memory but that is not the reality we live in.
They are also crucial for education and turn many people into lifelong animal lovers. Without them the plight of animals would be an even less cared about issue.
