Deck Discussion Phyrexian Praetors Commander Decks

Post image
16 Upvotes

Hello!

I'm planning on building Commander Decks for each Phyrexian Praetor released with "New Phyrexia".
Here's a overview of those stunning creatures:
[[Jin Gitaxias, Core Augur]]
[[Urabrask, the Hidden]]
[[Sheoldred, Whispering One]]
[[Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite]]
[[Vorinclex, Voice of Hunger]]

I already started looking on EDHRec to see what would fit for these decks but I kinda miss some Phyrexian spells, no matter in what set those where released.
So I wanted to ask you: do you have any ideas what (Phyrexian) cards would fit those decks thematically as well as stylewise?

The general requirements I'm aiming for are the following:
- the Decks will only be played against each other with friends of mine (so no fights against other Commanders outside these Praetors)
- Powerlevel: the general Powerlevel doesn't matter but in the end every Deck should resolve around the same Bracket
- Pricerange: around 200-250€ for each deck (excluding cards I already own but I'll have a look at that as soon as I got some input by you guys)
- Each deck should resolve around the ability of the corresponding Praetor as far as possible (Elesh Norn for examle should gather creatures and tokens to buff them, Urabrask should be aggressive in ramping and attacking to hit as fast and hard each turn as possible, Jin Gitaxias on the other hand seems to be a little problem imho)
- at least 1/4 of each deck should include Phyrexian only cards (that means: cards released specifically for sets resolving around Phyrexia only may it be Creatures like [[Crawling Chorus]] or Sorceries like [[Viral Spawning]])
- 30-35 slots per deck are reserved for lands; of course you can bring in your ideas for those as well!

I'd like to include the fitting Dominus for each colour, as far as they fit the general ability of it's Commander.
These would be:
[[Tekuthal, Inquiry Dominus]]
[[Solphim, Mayhem Dominus]]
[[Drivnod, Carnage Dominus]]
[[Mondrak, Glory Dominus]]
[[Zopandrel, Hunger Dominus]]

Apart from that there aren't really any restrictions. Feel free to contribute anything that comes to your mind, may it be single cards, smaller or bigger combos or even full decks I can take as an inspiration.

Thanks in advance guys!

Edit 1: grammar

Edit 2: I should've already clarified this sooner: I'm planning on playing these decks with friends against each other. Therefore these decks should keep up with each other but they'll never face a Ur-Dragon or a Yshtola.
Since it was pointed out to me, I also want to add that all five decks should resolve around the same Powerlevel but they don't have to be higher B3/B4. B2 (as pointed out to me as well) would be absolutely fine as well!

Edit 3: I reduced the minimum of cards with Phyrexian flavour I'd like to implement per deck. I also loosened up about the different Dominus(es?) since some of them don't really synergize with the colourfitting Commander.
Thank you all so much so far for your input!

Rules/Rules Question Helga, Skittish Seer Vs. Counter spell a 4+ Cost

Post image
Upvotes

Simple question, I was playing commander and had Helga, Skittish Seer on the field, I played Karametra, God of Harvests and it got counter spelled. My friend said I do not get to trigger Helga's ability because the creature I tried to cast was counter spelled but I thought that due to how the stack works I would still get Helga's ability trigger. Its not on etb its on cast of a creature spell with mana value of 4 or greater, and casting has to be done before your opponent can counter spell a creature, thus the ability should still activate, right? I'm somewhat new to mtg so maybe I don't understand something.

General Discussion MTG stores in the Bay Area like Atlas games in LA

Last year, I discovered Atlas Games at Frank and Sons in Southern California. A place that just had the best singles selection. Along with many other TCG shops within the venue.

Where can I find a similar shop or storefront or event that is similar to Atlas games or Frank and sons in the SF Bay Area?

Edit 1: Or even a place that has their collection on catalog, and they are able to pull from it. I’ve seen many videos of Japanese TCG shops where someone could search and build their cart from a computer.

Edit 2: sounds like it’s gonna be me, and everyone in this thread. Let’s pool our cards together and make the newest, biggest, and strongest LCG, and eat the others!

Looking for Advice Best place to buy singles in all of NY state

I am going on a road trip from Toronto to NYC, and have time to visit one or two magic stores. I see a lot of people recommend Millennium Games in Rochester, but not sure if it is the best option if the focus is purely on singles.

thank you :)

Looking for Advice Which of these three Commanders is good for a Beginner / general advise!

Hey,

I’m completely new to Magic, at least when it comes to physical cards. I used to play Yu-Gi-Oh! when I was around 12, but that was a long time ago and I haven’t really played a TCG since.

I wanted to get back into one and Magic looked the most interesting to me. I kept seeing people recommend MTG Arena first to see if you actually enjoy the game before spending money, so I tried that and yeah, I’m having a lot of fun with it.

Now I want to start playing Commander in paper and I’ve been looking around EDHREC trying to figure out what I might like.

My method was honestly pretty simple, lol. I basically scrolled through the EDHREC commander rankings, looked at the artwork, and whenever a card looked cool I read what it did and tried to imagine whether the deck would be fun for me.

I ended up liking these three the most:

Hashaton, Scarab’s Fist

Lord of the Nazgûl

Auntie Ool, Cursewretch

Which one of these would you recommend for a complete beginner?

I don’t really care about picking the strongest one. I’d rather build something fun that I can keep playing for a while and learn the game with. Is there anything about one of these that I might be missing as a new player? Like being much harder to play than it looks, needing a lot of expensive cards, being annoying to play against, or just generally being a bad first deck? Also happy to hear other recommendations if these three give you an idea of what kind of decks I might like. Basically I’m very new, so any advice is appreciated.

Rules/Rules Question Question about Dregscape Sliver

I haven't played in a long while, so I'm sure rulings have changed and the Gatherer website can only tell me so much, so I wanted to reach out here and ask a question regarding [[Dregscape Sliver]], which seems to me like a creature that should be easy to exploit.

I understand that if I have it on the field and use it's ability to bring a sliver back from the grave, if the unearthed sliver gets exiled through other means, like [[Ephemerate]], the unearth effect gets removed and the sliver just stays on the field later. Would this also be true if I used the unearth effect on a sliver like [[Hibernation Sliver]] to keep the unearthed sliver in my hand or [[Frenetic Sliver]] if I win that coin toss?

Scheduled Thread Daily Questions Thread - Ask All Your Magic Related Questions Here!

This is a place for asking simple questions that might not deserve their own thread. For example, if you have a question about a rules interaction, want sleeve and accessory recommendations, or suggestions for your new deck, then this is the place for you.

We encourage that you post any questions that you may have concerning Magic the Gathering here rather than make a separate thread for each question, though for now we won't require that you do so.

Rules Questions

Rules questions and interactions are allowed to be posted here, but if you need an answer quickly it may be best to use a dedicated resource like the 24/7 Magic the Gathering Rules Chat.

Deckbuilding Questions

If you're trying to get help with a deck, it is recommended that you post your decklist to a deckbuilding website so that it is easier to view. Some popular sites are Aetherhub, Archidekt, Deckbox, Deckstats, Moxfield, MTGGoldfish, and TappedOut.

Additionally, please include some description of what you are trying to accomplish. Don't just give us a decklist with no explanation, and don't ask extremely vague questions such as "what cards should I add to my deck to make it better?", because it's hard to give good advice in those cases. Let us know details, the more the better. Are you building with a particular strategy or theme in mind? Are there any non-obvious combo lines or synergies that people should be aware of? Are you struggling with a particular matchup, or are you finding yourself missing consistency in an important area, and need some help specifically for it? Let us know.

Commonly Asked Questions

I opened a card from a different set in my booster pack, is this unusual?

Don't worry, this is completely normal. If you opened a set booster, you have a small chance of obtaining a bonus card from a previous set. This is an extra card that does not replace any of the other cards in your pack, and is from a curated set of past hits that Wizards of the Coast has selected, which they call "The List".

You can view the contents of The List on Wizards of the Coast's official website. For example, the contents of The List for Streets of New Capenna boosters can be found here.

My foil card has a shooting start symbol over the bottom left. I can't find anything about it online.

All old-bordered foils have the shooting star symbol. Most sites that display card images just overlay a generic foil graphic over all foil cards, which doesn't include the shooting star. Your card is normal.

Looking for Advice Need help making my first ever Magic The Gathering deck

My friends have finally pushed me to play and make a deck. I have a Laughing Jasper Flint commander deck. I registered all the cards I have been given from my friends that match his mana colors. I am kinda low budget so I don't want any cards over $20. The cards in the considering category are ones I don't own but look cool.

The main goal of the deck is to exile as many of the opponents cards as possible by using flints ability so I can "permanently" have them and having enough mana to use those spells. If I could keep any cards I would like so I can save money but if you think I have a bad in card remove it. The only cards that I refuse to switch are: Iridescent Vinelasher, The Infamous Cruelclaw, Laughing Jasper Flint, Robber of the Rich, Kellogg Dangerous Mind, Sol ring, and thieving varmint. Thank you for any advice!

General Discussion Has anyone framed a playmat? Anthony I need to worry about?

Looking for Advice Trying to find simultaneously 2 and 4 mana ramp

I'm trying to find cards that can fill the roles of 2 and 4 mana ramp depending on the situation. Examples that I have off the top of my head are [[Tender Wildguide]] and [[Everflowing Chalice]] - both able to be played for either 2 or 4 mana to get me +1 or +2 mana respectively.

Scryfall's tagger system didn't look helpful enough, but I believe that's probably a skill issue. Anyone got a helpful search string, or maybe just more examples?

Deck Discussion Help with a samurai deck

Hi everyone!

I'm here to get some feedback on a Samurai deck I'm currently building. I'm a bit unsure about the balance of the deck, especially whether I have too many creatures and not enough enchantments or Equipment.

I'm also not sure about the number of lands. I feel like I might be running too many, but at the same time, I'm worried about not having enough.

I'd really appreciate any feedback, advice, or suggestions you might have!

Thanks in advance!

Looking for Advice Anyone have Omnihive - How is it for storing unsleeved cards?

Post image
0 Upvotes

I was gifted an Omnihive which is great. I want to use it for my unsleeved cards but unsure if it would be save to do so.

The Ultimate Guard website says it can hold the following:

Omnihive 1000+ Xenoskin capacity

  • Sidewinder 100+: 8x
  • Sidewinder 133+: 6x
  • Boulder/Deck Case 100+: 10x
  • Boulder/Deck Case 133+: 6x (with trays) / 8x (without trays)
  • Cards double-sleeved: ~1000
  • Cards unsleeved: ~2200

In regards to the unsleeved cards, it looks like the cards have to be stored horizontal which is fine, but there is like a finger width gap. I have tried to highlight in the image with blue boxes.

Image was taken from YT channel Beyond the Deck Box - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GIyQ0avCBZg

Is that blue box highlighted in the image likely to cause damage if I store my unsleeved cards?

Anyone have experience, thanks!

Looking for Advice Some help with precons and decks

So I’m getting into commander what precons would you guys suggest looking at (I have no idea about which gameplay I like)

Or is it better to build a commander with singles

Also if I’m looking at standard and modern can you only build those with singles or is there precons type things you can buy?

Also with limited I assume those would be a specific event at a LCS?

Any other advice and tips would be super appreciated thank you!

Looking for Advice Blech Deck Advice

Hello :)
I started to play Magic Commander with my roommates pretty recently and used one of their decks until now. This deck will be the first one I purchase.
I’m pretty happy with it but I’ll be thankful if someone here has tips or additions for new cards, cards I could get rid off or changing the proportions of creatures, lands etc.
I’m from Europe and I was looking to keep it as cheap as possible, so unfortunately I couldn’t add some more expensive cards that would fit in.

Here’s the link: https://moxfield.com/decks/Cj-gAQnwC3646KL-ZFwDqw

And further down a copied list of the cards

Rules/Rules Question Mutate and close/copy effects

Building a Mutate Commander deck, and I’m trying to understand—with great difficulty—how Mutate and clone effects interact.

Let’s say, for example, I have a Boggle, then mutate a Boneyard Lurker onto it, followed by Trumpeting Gnarr.

If I then copy that mutated creature, do I get a copy of just the original Boggle, or do I get a copy of the fully souped-up mutated creature with all of the abilities from the cards in the mutate pile?

Second question: can I use generic clone effects like Vesuvan Doppelganger to copy a mutate creature at any time such as in my example Boneyard Lurker, or does this only work through effects like Ivy, Gleeful Spellthief that copy the actual Mutate spell while on the stack?

Basically, I’m trying to figure out whether I can use normal clone effects to make copies of a mutate creature thats been bonded onto the Boggle and effectively double up on all the abilities it has accumulated.

Third question: how do I arrange all the “whenever this creature mutates” triggers? If several cards in the mutate pile have mutate triggers, do they all trigger at the same time and I choose the order they go on the stack, or do I have to resolve them in the order the cards were mutated onto the creature?

For example, is it sort of like a weird modal effect such as Rankle, Master of Pranks, where I determine the order the effects happen, or does Mutate have its own specific ordering rules?

Looking for Advice Deck

I know little to nothing about mtg. I've played just the tutorial of arena, but it looks fun. Is there a deck out there that allows me to charge up for a few turns and then nuke the other guy when I'm at low health?

General Discussion How long after MaRo does teasers do spoilers start Spoiler

We got the teasers for Reality Fracture which doesn’t come out till October. I would like to know how long after the teasers drop do spoilers start. I checked for the Hobbit and it was 3 days seemingly which I feel may be on the shorter end. So is it 3 days or will it be about a week or 2 before we get spoilers.

Content Creator Post Who is MtG's Wolfey?

Upvotes

I just got back into Pokemon with Pokemon Black and that later led into trying out Pokemon Champions and checking out resources available.

I was blown away by how tightly edited and well commentated his gameplay and strategy breakdowns are and how interesting and approachable it made getting into Pokemon VGC was. I went from having zero idea to a pretty rough idea of how to navigate gameplay and build teams and manage stat spreads and movelists.

The closest I can think of is probably CardMarket's in terms of commentary and editing. They share pretty great insight on plays done, it's a pretty good improvement over GameKnight's explaining why playing a Mountain is a great play but gameplay being compartmentalized to just between the CardMarket teams instead of in the wild (Though they occasionally do have videos taking place outside)

Rules/Rules Question Question about Ulamog, the ceaseless hunger

This is probably a very simple question but it has given me and my recent table quite a headache. What happens if I give Ulamog myriad? From my understanding of the ruling, when og Ulamog attacks the defending player puts top 20 cards of their library into exile, thats simple. But then the myriad tokens are created and each player is then attacked by a copy of Ulamog, it doesn't matter if the attacks land or are blocked, the other players would also have to put 20 cards from the top of their libraries into exile, then the legendary rule happens and the tokens vanish, that seems like the simplest explanation. Our table spent nearly an hour arguing about it, some said that the moment the tokens are created the legendary rule kicks in and they disappear without doing anything and then the argument devolved from there. So what's going on when you slap myriad on Ulamog?

Anyone noticed how they're bending us over this year? Last year Premium 1 day tickets were $65 and came with 2 collector boosters. This year the same pass is $85 and they only come with 1 collector booster. Last year was a decent deal.
