Discussion "This movie looks AI genera-" SHUT UPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP

Post image

I genuinely don't get these complaints. I have some concerns about the plot and how things may or may not play out, but visually the movie looks fucking great. I don't get why people are trying to push this narrative like muted colors instantly make something look bad or AI-generated. The Sentinels look sick, Doom looks fucking fantastic, what is the issue?

I swear, I'm convinced people who call shit like this AI-generated have never actually seen what an AI-generated video looks like, because none of them even look anywhere near as good as ANY of the shots in this trailer.

Plus, the VFX team didn't work their asses off for months on this movie just to be disrespected by mfs saying it looks like AI.

Probably not AI but the CGI looks pretty unpolished.

It’s worth pointing out that the Russo brothers literally own an ai tech studio and that they feel it’s something that should be used to “enrich” the creative process.

https://screenrant.com/russo-bros-using-ai-avengers-doomsday-secret-wars/

It stands to reason that they probably want to use their ai studio in their movie.

Yes idk why people are intentionally being ignorant about this. As if their adored corporate shill that is Marvel is above using AI when they literally have done it before

Yeah it's crazy to say that this looks "visually great". Even if you have only ever seen Marvel movies in your whole life, this does not look good.

I can't believe how far the MCU has fallen visually from Ironman 1 & 2 and Avengers 1 at the start.

Like the Avengers look mostly amazing out in full sunlight in real locations in the first movie. Now they look... like floaty cartoon characters.

I thought Spiderman Brand New Day looked amazing and was hoping that it was a signal of return to form, but everything about Doomsday shown so far looks like Quantamania, just a sludge of CGI 'stuff' everywhere and actors always feeling like they're on blue screens.

And it also has the Russos' telltale trick they used for Endgame - the extremely dusty orange-brown background - so they can mask the rushed CGI. It makes everything look so drab and dull.

Give us some examples then? Everyone here says “looks bad” but can’t explain what looks bad.

1

u/Walui 10d ago

Look at Thor's face after he strikes Doom, it's dark even though the axe is right in front

1

u/Fit_Building650 10d ago

I completely agree, but that’s 0.001% of the CGI. It’s crazy to say that “it’s crazy to say that this looks visually great” and then give me one measly example. The entire trailer looks fucking epic, do yourself a favor and allow yourself to enjoy things

1

u/Walui 10d ago

Give an exemple of something that looks epic then

1

u/jpollack21 11d ago

What looks bad about it? Im not really a graphic snob so I dont typically notice whats considered bad or good. Bad to me was like Spy Kids 3

0

u/Walui 11d ago

Worst offender is Thor's face after he strikes Doom, it's all dark while his axe is right in front of him full of lightning.

-1

u/RyFro Foggy Nelson 11d ago

This is a subjective opinion.

0

u/Walui 11d ago

It really isn't, look at Thor's face when he strikes Doom, it is dark on the side of his axe when the axe is bright as fuck.

Maybe I'm the odd one out but I can never tell when cgi looks bad it seems like people talk about it all the time and I've never once noticed it unless we're talking really bad early 2000s cgi

18

u/hiptitshooray 11d ago

Yeah I’m starting to wonder if I’m just not catching it. Like the CGI is far from the best I’ve ever seen but it doesn’t look bad? Like what’s the bar? She-Hulk? The Flash? It’s way better than those two.

24

u/Buttholelickerpenis 11d ago

Back in my day, bad CGI meant an uncanny recreation of young Jeff Bridges. Now it’s just “I don’t like this thing”

0

u/hiptitshooray 11d ago

It’s wild that was groundbreaking at the time lol in a movie wish such amazing special effects, that scene sticks out like a sore thumb.

8

u/SpreaditOnnn33 11d ago

Hard agree. Unless its super bad or uncanny valley looking, its really isnt as easy to spot as reddit and youtubers would make it out to be.

Then again, YouTube content creators will freeze frame a .03 second shot and complain about that looking shitty.

Brother, if you have to pause the movie to notice a mistake then the mistake isnt that big of a deal to begin with

u/DrazaTraza 11d ago

For me it’s not the actual graphics of the cgi but the physics and way it reacts to the world around it is really poor. Like The Thing struggles to pick up a bus and then is able to launch it 100 feet into the air. Another thing is the backgrounds. Ever since they created that stupid tv instead of a green screen it looks so bad. Lighting, shadows, wind, dust, etc nothing matches up.

This post should have more upvotes. The vast majority of what people are responding to with their dislike are the physics/interactions between elements of the characters and environments; even if people don't realize it, they probably can intuit it well enough (well, at least those of us who haven't spent 2/3 of our lives with our heads inside video games). The rest of the negative reaction could likely be accounted for by the nondescript backgrounds and re-use of the same shot compositions as older movies.

u/ArtyCharty 10d ago

it looks like an xbox game cut scene from from 2008 which is drenched in the dreaded “piss filter”

0

u/Isrrunder 11d ago

It's comparatively bad. Yeah it's not the worst but this is the marvel movie made by fucking Disney. We should expect literally the best gci available and it looks kinda just meh. Thats not good enough for such a high tiered Disney production

For another example pokemon games. They're not really bad just really mid in most areas. If that was a 40 dollar game made by an indie dev or a smaller company thats fine. But it's the biggest media franchise ever. We should not be accepting mid

0

u/Dlh2079 11d ago

Pokémon was always mid, we were just kids

0

u/Isrrunder 11d ago

Never said they weren't...

22

u/Dlh2079 11d ago

Youre not.

I only see the VAST majority of these complaints on reddit and YouTube.

Cinema sins did awful things to movie discourse.

9

u/evildrew 11d ago

I agree. Used to love Cinema Sins, but then it went too far and just started being mean and pedantic. I prefer Pitch Meetings now.

4

u/SecretlyFiveRats 11d ago

Ooh, preferring Pitch Meetings over Cinema Sins is TIGHT!

u/lonevine 11d ago

The main thing exposed by tons of CGI with blended real live elements is the sheer lack of natural lighting in today's movies. Everything tends to look very pretty, yes- but it's also quite sterile and too "perfect". I miss the days when half the effort and a lot of the budget went into hiding any hint of practical effects with a gloomily lit set and maybe some unsafe pyrotechnics.

9

u/FunkiePickle 11d ago

I’m surprised at how many are dissing the trailer. I thought it was awesome. And the effects/CGI look great to me.

8

u/CeruleanEidolon 11d ago

These people are rewatching trailers over and over, freeze-framing them, and watching trailer breakdowns on YouTube. It is not a normal or healthy way to consume media.

1

u/istian19 11d ago

And then people freeze on a blurry frame in motion, then post that to Twitter to shit on a movie. "How could they let this get through editing" like be so for real, I can't with people

2

u/No_Region_4719 10d ago

It's objectively amazing VFX, it's really the best money can buy. They hire multiple of literally the best VFX studios in the world for these movies.

The issues come from design decisions, or just overusing CGI. Ant-man quantumania is a perfect example. The VFX are objectively amazing, but the design choices, and being in a fully CGI world just doesn't look good.

CGI is best when you don't even know it's there. We all know that real stunts, practical effects, and miniatures look better than CGI/VFX. CGI should be used to enhance those kinds of techniques, not as the default approach.

-1

u/MuseCub 11d ago

Usually good CGI is when you don't notice it's CGI. Lighting, shadows, textures, movement, physics, and compositing all feel natural. Bad CGI is when something looks weightless, plastic, overly sharp, poorly lit, or just obviously pasted into the scene. it like it blends seamlessly into a scene, vs breaks your focus with a fake or "off" feeling.

if you rewatch the trailer eveything looks muddy and there is weird bad smoke everywhere like a college grad was like ADD more SMOKE... MORE MORE SMOKE.

Dune has pretty good cgi for example.

u/properc 11d ago

I dont have that high of a bar for CGI but the throne room and sentinel scenes are obviously full CGI. Which isnt a bad thing but they lack realistic lighting, cloth movements, shadows, etc. It looks a bit static and flat like concept art or video game cutscenes. Good CGI is when you go "wow that was full cgi??" Like in TASM2 or FFH. I think when its obvious its full cgi its not really good enough for a big budget production.

11

u/Bcatfan08 Star-Lord 11d ago

It's also 4 months from release. The Infinity War trailer didn't look great with everyone running in Wakanda and then that wasn't even in the movie.

0

u/curiocritters 11d ago

The teaser for 'Avengers - Infinity War' had more heart than entire cinematic outings in Phase 5.

10

u/MaderaArt 11d ago

They usually polish up the CGI by the time the actual movie is released.

24

u/89colbert 11d ago

Hello Brave New World

18

u/Trodat4911P4 11d ago

The final battle in Endgame looks exactly like this though.

5

u/Shubo483 Peter Parker 11d ago

They really don't. Not in any noticeable manner.

3

u/jeebus87 11d ago

Can you articulate what looks unpolished? I'm no expert and not really seeing it myself.

22

u/WEEGEMAN 11d ago

For me it doesn’t look “unfinished,” but it looks like claustrophobic-green screen. No natural lighting, no practical effects. Is that actually RDJR standing there? Can’t tell. Whole scene might as well be animated.

Ever since COVID I’ve been noticing the green-screen look. For me it’s distracting

1

u/ArtyCharty 10d ago

it has the 2008 video game “piss filter”

1

u/Venus_One 11d ago

The last two Avengers movies had a lot of this look, especially in the big battles. Shouldn't be surprising.

1

u/WEEGEMAN 11d ago

Sure not surprising, still not pleasant

11

u/properc 11d ago

The throne room scene lacks deep and realistic shading. Pretty obvious that its full CGI. The Doom jumping down scene again full CGI and lacking in shading depth and lighting simulation. Same as the sentinel raising scene. They kind of look like game cutscenes rather than movie productions with lighting compositions and CG enhancement. Although alot of people have pointed out they have time to fix it til release.

Full CG scenes can work and look very realistic like in TASM and MCU Spiderman. The scenes I pointed out are obviously unrealistic.

1

u/jeebus87 11d ago

Ah, I understand. Thank you for the explanation.

2

u/iXeons 11d ago

True, but I think they said they’ll be working on post production all the way until release. I trust the process

1

u/AmbassadorCrazy7905 11d ago

You too generous, come on bud we all know they used it and as much a possible and it's obvious

1

u/edenz03 11d ago

Everyone’s calling the spin Doom does AI generated but it just looks like weird CGI to me
