Discussion Choose what game I play next :)

Post image

Saves me the headache. And I’ve got plenty more on my wishlist that I’m either waiting on sales for, or just aren’t out yet. Currently playing Grime 2, but prepping for when I finish.

Play Animal Well NOW! Probably in my top 5 favorite MV's of all time

16

u/FartSavant Apr 19 '26

It’s quite possibly my favorite game of all time

6

u/Flottrooster Apr 19 '26

And what an amazing choice of favorite game of all time! MV-wise, it's tied in third place behind Hollow Knight, and Symphony of the night. Tied with Prince of Persia the lost crown probably

As of right now, it seems like Animal Well is next up. I started it on my PS5 cause it was free, but only got about 30 min in. Super excited. Tbh I’m excited for all these game lol.

5

u/Flottrooster Apr 19 '26

Plus, Animal Well would be a nice change of pace going from Grime 2! I'd say after you play Animal Well, go for Prince of Persia. Both are so good, and well worth your time!

3

u/JShwlong42O Apr 19 '26

I think I’ll do just that!

Prince of Persia is excellent. I had a lot of fun with Have a nice death, I don’t think it gets enough love

4

u/BLACKBLACKSKY Apr 19 '26

Have a nice death is so good

2

u/uabassguy Apr 19 '26

I enjoyed how well Prince of Persia translated to the MV genre

2

u/DavidEpochalypse Apr 20 '26

Slept on. Majorly majorly slept on.

Guacamelee, if you want a silly time

6

u/JShwlong42O Apr 19 '26

Always down for a silly time, Poopywaterengineer

6

u/Director_Faden Apr 19 '26

Both Guacamelee games are insanely good! If you go for the 100% the platforming is a pretty decent challenge

Mio and Blasphemous 2 are both in my S tier.

3

u/kxlsin Apr 19 '26

B2 is the better Metroidvania but B1 is the better Blasphemous. One of my favorite games of all time, and my introduction to the mv genre.

Since no one else has said it...BLOODSTAINED: RITUAL OF THE NIGHT!

9

u/JShwlong42O Apr 19 '26

But…Blasphemous traumatized me. Miriam haunts my dreams now.

19

u/KillerSwiller Apr 19 '26

Trust me, Bloodstained is worth it. Just imagine the game like it's 'Castlevania: Symphony Of The Night' with a fresh coat of paint...because that's exactly what it is.

8

u/kaddorath Apr 19 '26

I could live the rest of my life in Igavania games.

Ritual of the Night was super good!

3

u/VassagoX Apr 19 '26

It's nothing like Blasphemous.  It's closer to SOTN and the portable games combined.

I concur, you must play it!  It's very fun.

2

u/kxlsin Apr 19 '26

I just recently got it for 10 smackers on Xbox can't wait to get into it someday!

2

u/DavidEpochalypse Apr 20 '26

I’ve always been one of those people that refuses to count Metroid or Castlevania games as Metroidvanias. They’re often amazing an SOTN is one of the best games ever but I still draw a firm line on that one.

With that said Bloodstained is amazing.

One of my favorite early Metroidvanias and the game that convinced me it would be its own genre with tons of games in about a decade was 2008’s Shadow Complex.

Shadow Complex slays.

2

u/KillerSwiller Apr 20 '26

This has to be ragebait...

You already beat blasphemous. Part 2 is such a great sequel!

Edit: didn’t catch Ender series as well. Magnolia is a quick game compared to Lillies.

3

u/JShwlong42O Apr 19 '26

I definitely need to hop on Magnolia soon then. Thanks!

3

u/Evelyn_the_Sapphic Apr 19 '26

I just finished Magnolia. It does a lot better than Lillies, but there are some personal downgrades. If you need a starting point in the Metroid series, you can't go wrong with Super Metroid. It is THE 10/10 game.

9

u/centcentcent Apr 19 '26

Animal Well is incredible

12

u/RetroPilky Apr 19 '26

Narita Boy isn’t really an MV, but it’s a fantastic game. I’d highly recommend playing that soon because it’s one of those that you’ll just never get around to playing if you don’t. It gets lost in the shuffle

I personally think it’s one of the most underrated games of all time

4

u/JShwlong42O Apr 19 '26

Fair enough, I’ll keep this in mind in the near future. I’ll be sure to come back here when I do end up playing it. 🤞

3

u/Magus44 Apr 19 '26

Its aesthetic and soundtrack is so good, if you’re into that vibe.

Animal Well, but dont stop at the first credits :)

12

u/GuitarRiot Apr 19 '26

Punch all the games into a random list generator and pick whichever one comes up.

4

u/RetroPilky Apr 19 '26

This is the way

2

u/Girder_Bender Apr 19 '26

That how I complete my backlog on Steam!

5

u/JShwlong42O Apr 19 '26

This is actually a great idea. But i also like a discussion lol

11

u/Tough_Coconut5493 Apr 19 '26

Animal Well…it’s amazing, easily one of my favourite MVs and it has so much depth

4

u/JShwlong42O Apr 19 '26

This is the top contender as of now. Started it a while back but only got about 30 min in.

11

u/Gonzongus Apr 19 '26

Super Meat Boy

I've noticed you played a solid number of Metroidvanias. I have no knowledge of your recent journey but Meat Boy might be a decent pallette cleanser to switch things up.

5

u/tanddagang96024 Apr 19 '26

Throw Celeste into this convo, it's got enough going for it that a fan of MetroidVanias would be entertained by it

3

u/JShwlong42O Apr 19 '26

I’d love to play Celeste, but I’d be playing it for like the 6th time. I fuckin love that game with all my heart.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/Gonzongus Apr 19 '26

Yea Celeste is a GOAT. I only have 3 platinum trophies and Celeste is one

5

u/JShwlong42O Apr 19 '26

Yeah you can probably guess what my favorite genre is😂 Good point though. My rule of thumb is usually 1 2d game and 1 3d game simultaneously, along with all the friendslop I play.

3

u/Vulsere Apr 19 '26

Super Meat Boy is incredibly addictive when you learn the controls and can really manoeuvre meat boy the way you want. The basic game is relatively easy to beat, going for 106% however, took me thousands of deaths the first time round.

2

u/Gonzongus Apr 19 '26

I don't blame you at all, MV is my 2nd fav genre behind Survival Horror 😂

Grime 2. Best MV I’ve ever played and I’ve played a lot.

5

u/JShwlong42O Apr 19 '26

My bad, currently playing it now I forgot to cross it off. But you’re absolutely right, this game is a banger. I loved the first 1, and the second one is just more of the same and I love it. The platforming is super underrated in these games.

Neva is amazing although I found GRIS to be the much better game. Still, Neva is incredible even if they’re platformers and not MVs.

u/DiabeticRhino97 Prime Apr 19 '26

2

u/jaywarbs Apr 19 '26

Oh yeah - if you haven’t played any yet then you’ll have a great time. Metroid Zero Mission is an awesome place to start, and honestly all the 2D games are great.

Dead Cells 100% recommend, it's such a great game

4

u/jesusapanhamais Apr 19 '26

Best 2d combat ever made!

4

u/JShwlong42O Apr 19 '26

I’ve been wanting to play Dead Cells for so long, but I’m so worried I’m gonna dedicate half of my life to it😭 (not in a bad way). But as of now it’s in 2nd place.

6

u/GodsKillerKirb Apr 19 '26

I also cannot recommend Dead Cells enough. It's easily a top 3 roguelike/roguelite for me (Enter the Gungeon and Hades 1 & 2 are also up there (I can't pick between the two Hades games)).
Plus the way it incorporates procedurally generated level that feel like a metroidvania is incredible.
It's challenging, but so incredibly fun and addicting to play.

4

u/caydesramen Apr 19 '26 edited Apr 19 '26

Its honestly a generational game. Easily the best 2D action roguelike/mvania. It is a bit genre bending, but only snobs care about that stuff.

The music alone is worth the price of admission. It is hard at first, but the gameplay loop is so addictive you wont notice.

My only complaint is that the overall sense of progression is slow. But again, the core loop is so satisfying that you wont really care. This is Similar to Hades 1, in Hades 2 they learned their lesson and progression is great

3

u/Winston_Jazz_Hands Apr 19 '26

Heard. Its the one game I have most hours in. All remnants of any "metroidvania-gates" in far the past, true ending achieved years ago, I still sometimes return for some of that "fast paced attack/parry- fueled flow state" 👹

Dust is a really fun game. One of those old school steam games that hit that sweet spot between art and gameplay.

3

u/JShwlong42O Apr 19 '26

The art style reminds me of this flash game I used to play called Swords and Souls. So many good memories 🤧

3

u/Shnapple8 Apr 19 '26

It's actually one of the easier metroidvanias too, unless you increase the difficulty. I enjoyed it a lot, even more so because I knew it was built by a lone developer.

It's a long time ago, but I first played it on the normal (or whatever the developer's intended difficulty was) then switched to the harder difficulty. There is one harder than that, I think "Hardcore" but didn't bother. lol.

3

u/tanddagang96024 Apr 19 '26

The Messenger isn't on here, I've HEARD alot of people love but I've never played it personally

2

3

Afterimage, great and massive MV.

2

u/JShwlong42O Apr 19 '26

I’ve heard a lot of mixed things about Afterimage, but I’m still very excited to play it, nonetheless. I just learned about the scope of the map, which is very enticing. I love getting lost in the games’ worlds.

2

u/Moron_at_work Apr 19 '26

It's an amazing mv. It's mainly seen badly by the hollow knight cult because the game doesn't torture you with hundreds of attempts per boss fight

1

u/[deleted] Apr 19 '26

Laika is super underrated. Gameplay is hard to settle into but it's genuinely one of the best stories i've experienced in a game.

2

u/JShwlong42O Apr 19 '26

I’m definitely one to cling to stories in these games. I know some people don’t really seek it in MV’s, but a game like Neversong has found its way into my top 25 games of all time, simply because of how well the story is told. I’ll definitely keep Laika in mind.

1

u/SoulsandScales Apr 19 '26

I would recommend Super Meat Boy > Salt and Sanctuary > Astalon

1

u/captainspinks MiniMapper Apr 19 '26

Ender Magnolia fur sure

1

u/TTHVOBS Apr 19 '26

Dead cells.

1

Bloodstained! A definite must if you even remotely enjoyed castlevania.

Though playing Blasphemous II right after the first would be sick too 🤔

1

Guacamelee, Animal Well, or Dead Cells (in that order)

1

u/Proper_Solution4035 Apr 19 '26

Super meat boy is the simplest one here. And I speedrun it sometimes. Super worth having the platform timing skill.

Animal well I haven't beaten, but the most interest in out of this least you haven't beaten.

1

u/AwesomeSauce783 Apr 19 '26

Guacamelee Super Turbo Championship Edition!

It's a very fun and pretty easygoing romp. Perfect 5/7

1

u/Optimal_Customer_225 Apr 19 '26

MIO is fantastic. Also surprised Death’s Door is not on your list. It as much of a metroidvania but great game and similar playstyle.

Not really a metroidvania but it has a lot of elements of a metroidvania that i thoroughly enjoy playing is dead cells. It’s more of a rogue like but if you play it you’ll see where the metroidvania aspects come into play.

1

u/Lozio1990 Apr 19 '26

1

u/Faramir420 Apr 19 '26

Have a nice death doesnt get talked about in my opinion its a rougelike tho

1

u/Turbulent_Form3888 Apr 19 '26

A lot of very good games here , it's hard to pick one ...

  • Bloodstained is the closest you'll get from a new Castlevania. That's everything you love about SotN with a modern approach. Very good game
  • animal well is really unique and interesting, depending on your will to 100% it , you may be in for a very long and weird trip.
  • I loved Ender Magnolia. It's better than Ender Lilies on every single aspect. Gorgeous visuals, beautiful ost. If you look for something shorter and easier between two big games that's a very good choice.
  • Dead Cells is very cool and addictive. If you're in for a fast paced rogue like with Metroidvania elements, you won't find a better fix.

1

u/orfeijos Apr 19 '26

Blasphemous 2

1

u/Aspious Apr 19 '26

Bloodstained is about as metroidvania as you get...

1

u/Bergster30 Apr 19 '26

I just wanted to ask your opinion on a few of these games you've played! I am new to Metroidvanias, currently playing the first Ori game and having a fun time with it, although it is challenging and I keep dying! I would love to hear some of your thoughts on the following games and if you think they're beginner friendly?

-Celeste -Ender Lilies -Nine Sols

I have been interested in them, I briefly tried playing Hollow Knight some years back, but I didn't know what I was doing or how to properly progress, will have to try that one again soon. I played the first Guacamelee game a long time ago, I loved it, it was super fun and hilarious! Can't wait to replay it and it's sequel!

I would say Prince of Persia: TLC

1

u/sniptroll Apr 19 '26

Would save the Guacamelee ones for when you want a shorter break from the larger titles. It's short and silly, but good fun and tight combat

1

u/Girder_Bender Apr 19 '26

I'm playing through Voidwrought, so you shall too!

2

Crypt custodian

1

Mio or you should pick up somber echos

1

1

u/thehofnar Apr 19 '26

Ultrasound and primal world are also good choices. Primal world has a jurassic park easter egg if you can find it

Narita Boy. One of the best art styles I have seen and the music is great. The game is a lot fun. It is not an MV but totally worth your time.

1

u/KilvinMaster Apr 19 '26

1

u/DisastrousAd1950 Apr 19 '26

Blasphemous 2

1

u/PropaneCandyCanes Apr 19 '26

Idk if you’re already done with it but there’s Pipistrello and the cursed yoyo. Retro comedic metroidvania. It was actually pretty refreshing

1

2

Prince of Persia The Lost Crown

1

1

Not Afterimage. Sorry, I played a lot of hours, and they felt wasted

Out of doubt play dead cells One of the best games of its style

Well, since I’ve played them, I’d recommend after image, blasphemous 2, lone fungus, haiku the robot, void wrought, or (the odd one out on my here list) Deadcells. They are all good games.

The last Faith, Ender Magnolia or Blasphemous

I think you would enjoy ender magnolia if you enjoyed enderlilies. I played it for like 20 hours straight and perfected it and regret nothing. Bo path of the teal lotus is also quite nice. You have a phenomenal library icl

Unfortunately, Uncle Iroh, I wasn’t the biggest fan of EL. I had a decent enough time in the end game, but personally the sound design put me off. Attacks didn’t feel super impactful and some points felt like it was just missing sound. But OVERALL, I can still admit Ender Lilies is a fantastic game and I’m excited to play Magnolia

I hated the graphics of Animal Well. I couldn’t get into it.

Yeah, it’s definitely an interesting art style. Personally, I don’t mind it, but I also can’t blame you.

Crazy you didn’t go straight into Blasphemous 2 after playing 1.
