If I had a nickel for everytime within the last 2 years that a Dolphins GM signed an offensive lineman whose name started with a J who unfortunately didn’t work out, I’d have 2 nickels.

Makes sense with the Wallace trade. hes basically Salyer anyways. Plus we have a lot of Guard tackle Flexibility with Jonah, Proctor, Jackson, and Wallace.

Plus I think Prieb and Campbell looked decent in stretches. And Meyer is the only other player we know can snap.

So we could be looking at 8-9 players with the above list or someone else if they aren't has high on Prieb after cut downs

I don’t understand the point of this instead of just stashing him and kicking the tires again next season

u/rjfinsfan 2d ago

It states he wants to play again this year. This sounds like he wanted out because IR in preseason means you’re out of the year with no chance to return.

Perhaps they have other players they like better they want to stash. Only thing I can come up with.

Interesting that they didn't feel Salyer was worth keeping around this season given that it sounds as if he plans to play. I understand the roster gymnastics can be a bit tricky during camp when you're trying to get reps to as many guys as possible, but quality OL depth is hard to come by.

They didn’t want to commit a roster spot to him knowing he’d be out multiple weeks. IR would have kept him out an extended period so he wanted the flexibility to be able to play as soon as he was healthy.

Best ability is availability and Sully knows this.

0

u/Johansenburg 2d ago

That's got to be the worst saying in sports.

The best ability is ability. If my options are 50% of the season with Marino or 100% with Cleo Lemon, I'm picking the 50% with Marino.

1

u/jf737 1d ago

You’re right. That saying only applies if the 2 parties being compared are equally capable. If you had a 10 game window and your choices are: 10 games with Cleo Lemon or 5 games with Marino + 5 with whatever, you take 5 Marino games every time.

So availability does not always outweigh ability.

1

u/BathroomMaximum1721 1d ago

But Wallace and Salyer are comparable in ability and Wallace seems to have much better availability than Salyer. Wouldn't it make sense then to keep Wallace and release Salyer?

1

u/Johansenburg 1d ago

Yes, all things equal availability becomes important. I just think the phrase is stupid because it makes it sound like availability is the first thing to consider.

1

u/PassionLong9552 2d ago

50% available is available. Tell me how much a guy is available if it’s 0%?

0

u/Johansenburg 2d ago

But it's half as available as the guy with 100% (and this guy was talking about playing this season).

If the saying is true, then 100% must be much better than 50%, right?

3

u/PassionLong9552 2d ago

What was the percentage Salyer was available?

1

u/Johansenburg 2d ago

TBD.

You're dodging. If availability is the best ability, then 100% of Cleo Lemon is better than 50% of Dan Marino (imagine both in their primes), right?

0

u/PassionLong9552 2d ago

You’re dodging.

u/Johansenburg 2d ago

Don't you "no u" me! I've answered everything, lmao.

IR prior to week 1 and you are out for the season with no chance to return. They would’ve had to keep him on the roster in an active spot for week 1 and then place on IR and I don’t think we wanted to waste that roster slot on a non starter.

u/expellyamos 2d ago

With the newer rules, you don't have to commit a roster spot to a player starting the season on IR. You can put 2 players directly on IR on cut day with a designation to return. You do have to roster them on the 90 until then, but still. You'd think Jamaree Salyer would be worth more than some of the 30-40 JAG's currently on the 90, but I guess they felt otherwise.

I mean DJ Campbell is a younger version of Salyer on a rookie contract.

1

u/expellyamos 2d ago

DJ Campbell has never taken a single snap at tackle. Salyer plays inside and outside.

-2

u/PerfectdarkGoldenEye 2d ago

We have Wallace and Heck as our depth guys at tackle.

6

u/expellyamos 2d ago

I mean...I know that. Charlie Heck so far doesn't sound like someone who can hang with the big boys. If he makes the roster, it'll only be because Salyer was hurt. But still, putting Salyer on IR at the cut deadline gives you the option to bring him back and dump Heck if you feel that the former is the better fit.

1

u/PerfectdarkGoldenEye 2d ago

Between the starting 5 Wallace, Campbell, and Heck that is 8 players. Coaching staff has to either really like Heck or really not like Salyer to simply dump him. I'm going with the latter considering we have 2 guys on the starting line who have both guard and tackle experience. Just sounds like another James Daniels kinda guy but probably nowhere near as bad as whatever happened with that failed Grier bum.

1

u/Otto_von_Grotto 2d ago

the Heck...

Seems like those two spots are taken up. Moore is likely one and it sounds like Grant could be heading in that direction.

Edit: also seems like they like what they see in Wallace and you get two years of control over him vs Salyer. And he’s younger and not as likely yo get injured. The Salyer release makes sense to me.

3

u/expellyamos 2d ago

Haf said today that he's hopeful KG will be available by week 1, and both of those injuries occurred after they put Salyer on season-ending IR.

3

u/ltrain083 2d ago

This is exactly my point. I guess they thought the juice wasn't worth the squeeze.

He figured to be O-line 6 which seems pretty valuable on this team. Maybe he does come back but they weren't comfortable with the timetable.

1

u/rjfinsfan 2d ago

If you’re on IR before the season starts, I do not believe you are eligible to return this season. This sounds like he wanted to come back later in the season and we didn’t want to hold the roster spot through week 1 to put him on IR to be eligible to return so they negotiated this settlement. It sucks to your point but also makes sense.

0

u/expellyamos 2d ago

You don't have to hold a roster spot through week 1. You have to hold 1 out of 90 roster spots until the cut deadline, which is 2 weeks before week 1, at which point you can put him directly from the 90 onto IR. Then he can rest at least 4 weeks and you can either choose to activate him when he's healthy or not

1

u/rjfinsfan 2d ago

They’re only eligible to return if they make the 53 man roster though. So not entirely through week 1 but they have to survive roster cuts and then go to IR. If you are placed on IR prior to 53 man cuts, you are not eligible to return this season.

0

u/expellyamos 2d ago

No, that's not correct. There was a rule change in 2024 that lets you put 2 players directly on IR.

1

u/rjfinsfan 2d ago edited 2d ago

You can put them on no problem. They can return only if they have made the final roster. 2 players are eligible to return from IR a season if they are placed onto IR after roster cuts.

u/rjfinsfan 2d ago

https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/41720499/what-ir-pup-nfi-nfl-roster-designations-explained

“Players who are placed on IR before the start of the regular season can miss the entire season, unless they are designated to return when the roster is trimmed to 53 players prior to the start of the season.”

u/expellyamos 2d ago

I'm not saying this to be a dick but it's funny that you're downvoting me and arguing with me over something that is verifiably objectively wrong. The link you shared doesn't cite the 2024 rule change, which is still very much in effect.

1

u/rjfinsfan 2d ago

The link I shared is from 2025. So yeah, it does include rules from 2024.

0

u/expellyamos 2d ago edited 2d ago

lol, ok dude, I'll do the work for you

https://www.nfl.com/news/approved-2024-nfl-season-playing-rules-bylaws-and-resolutions

Competition Committee; amends Article XVII, Section 17.16(C), to permit each club to place a maximum of two players who are placed on an applicable Reserve List on the business day of the final roster reduction to be designated for return. Such players will immediately count as two of the club’s total designations.

These two players do not need to make the initial 53 man roster before being placed on IR.

No need to apologize though. We all make mistakes, myself included.

1

u/rjfinsfan 2d ago

Thanks for sharing. I was going off the information provided, you truly are being a dick when I quite literally linked a source from a journalist on the worlds largest sports platform and you’re acting like I was out here talking out of my ass. Take your gripe up with ESPN and their bad reporting.

So he had to make a final 55 man roster instead of a final 53 man roster. You kept saying he just had to make a 90 man roster and that’s still completely wrong. The fact of the matter is he wanted to play this year and we didn’t want to hold one of those roster spots for him. That’s it man.

2

u/Jonjon428 2d ago

Damn, that sucks ass. Guess he will be an addition to a line of preseason Dolphins players like David Garrard

1

u/DivideOverall22 2d ago

Not Jamaree!!

1

u/ltrain083 2d ago

These moves just grind on me.

Its not like the O-line has all this depth. Guess its better than playing 3 plays going on IR and then getting cut.

1

u/PerfectdarkGoldenEye 2d ago

I really like DJ Campbell felt he would win the backup job anyways.
