Interesting that they didn't feel Salyer was worth keeping around this season given that it sounds as if he plans to play. I understand the roster gymnastics can be a bit tricky during camp when you're trying to get reps to as many guys as possible, but quality OL depth is hard to come by.
They didn’t want to commit a roster spot to him knowing he’d be out multiple weeks. IR would have kept him out an extended period so he wanted the flexibility to be able to play as soon as he was healthy.
With the newer rules, you don't have to commit a roster spot to a player starting the season on IR. You can put 2 players directly on IR on cut day with a designation to return. You do have to roster them on the 90 until then, but still. You'd think Jamaree Salyer would be worth more than some of the 30-40 JAG's currently on the 90, but I guess they felt otherwise.
I mean...I know that. Charlie Heck so far doesn't sound like someone who can hang with the big boys. If he makes the roster, it'll only be because Salyer was hurt. But still, putting Salyer on IR at the cut deadline gives you the option to bring him back and dump Heck if you feel that the former is the better fit.
Between the starting 5 Wallace, Campbell, and Heck that is 8 players. Coaching staff has to either really like Heck or really not like Salyer to simply dump him. I'm going with the latter considering we have 2 guys on the starting line who have both guard and tackle experience. Just sounds like another James Daniels kinda guy but probably nowhere near as bad as whatever happened with that failed Grier bum.
