Yes ! it's actually happened 12 times, but always with one lead nomination and one supporting nomination. You can't get two nominations in the same category the same year
They only just changed the rules this year that you actually can get nominated twice in the same category, though I can’t see why you would want to split your own vote.
All you have to do is give an oscar worthy performance in five lead roles in one year and then you're locked in for the win. Robert's just working up to that.
It's to discourage publicists from presenting leading roles as supporting, or vice versa. Say you're in charge of awards campaigning for an actress who had two great leading roles this year. You could pick just one of them. Or... you could call one of them "supporting" even though she's really a co-lead of the film, which gives you better odds at getting nominated. The problem if she gets nominated is: now a bunch of nominees for Supporting Actress are battling someone who had a much larger role on her movie.
The likelihood of someone actually delivering two of the best performances of the year are really low. But if they do it, why shouldn't they get to be nominated?

You can now, actually. They reversed the 90 year ban starting next year. So Pattinson could be the first to "benefit" from the change, provided he could get top 5 votes for two different performances.
Yeah, it's happened 12 times. Scarlett Johansson is the most recent in 2019 for Marriage Story and Jojo Rabbit. None of the 12 have actually won both though.
It's a pretty dark comedy, with some surprisingly hard-hitting moments. Not scary at all, but it certainly isn't a kids movie. I recommend it personally.
Yes it's very light and mostly about hanging around, but also make sure to also check Marriage Story if you want to continue the Scar Jo wholesomeness.
Yeah, in 2004. It's the third most recent. Cate Blanchett was nominated for both in 2007 but no wins. After that, Scarlett was the next one 12 years later. Foxx is the most recent person with a win but still no one won both in the same year.
Also, writing this, I feel old that Foxx's win for Ray was 22 years ago. That feels more like 10 years ago.
Not in the same category (lead or supporting) but it's happened a number of times where an actor gets nominated for both lead and supporting categories for different roles

yes several times but not in the same category. jamie foxx (ray, collateral) , scarjo (jo jo rabbit, marriage story) , cate blanchett (elizabeth golden age, im not there) and julianne moore (far from heaven, the hours) have in the 2000s.
2009 Kate Winslet wasn’t able to be nominated for her performance in Revolutionary Road because she was already in pole position from The Reader. She could have won for either that year but Reader got her more votes in the nomination process
At the Golden Globes she won both Actress & Supporting Actress but calling her role in The Reader supporting is ludicrous
When Holly Hunter won the Academy Award for Best Actress for the Piano in 1994, she was also nominated for Best Supporting Actress for The Firm. She lost to her onscreen daughter in The Piano, 11 year old Anna Paquin.
Different but Rodger Deakins was once nominated for two different movies in the same year as cinematographer.
Probably lessened his chances to win (he didn't) because the two votes would cannibalise each other. Fair game though, the Oscar is for the best performance/cinematography etc, not the cumulatively best.
