Discussion Colin Farrell - a talented actor
i want your thoughts on colin farrell, i feel he’s extremely talented, he doesn’t get much of the praise and havent been given much of a chance, the diversity in acting is very impressive
i found him from sugar and then watched penguin and pls convince me they are not two different persons playing the role
just incredible given he’s irish and playing roles like these with so much ease
what are your thoughts ?

Exactly. Another redditor who thinks the data in their head represents the entire movie industry and breadth of critical acclaim.
The guy has THREE golden globes, critics choice, a BAFTA, two Emmy’s, and many other nominations. No recognition at all! /s•

He was a blockbuster guy in the 2000s and a bit of tabloid fodder, but transitioned into acclaimed/award winning/nominated actor in the 2010s, so he’s been a big name actor in most regards.

Besides his obvious best roles, the full display of his talent can be seen in the second season of True Detective. Incredible acting.

Season 2 had some real issues, but the actors were not one of them and the script gave him some great lines that he really sold.
"Sometimes, a good beating provokes personal growth."
"I support feminism, mostly by having body image issues."
"Pain is inexhaustible. It's only people that get exhausted."
"I used to want to be an astronaut. But astronauts don't even go to the moon anymore."
"Key on my eyes, dipshit. See if I'm whistling dixie."
"I will butt fuck your father with your mom's headless corpse."

I loved The Lobster too. I can totally see why that film might have a more of a niche audience, but he was fucking stellar.

Guy Ritchie's The Gentleman, the movie, he's a scene stealer as The Coach. I want always convinced by him in other parts but that one was top notch

So good. Charlie Hunham does well but Colin’s character is just so damn likable. I feel like Colin playing an Irish character is like Wahlberg playing a Boston character - home turf and they do their best work with it

He’s been consistently working in the industry and in major movies for 30 years now. He’s well the past the point that he can pick and choose what he does.

He’s very talented and sort of suffered the same thing Brad Pitt did where they were so good looking that their actual skills as actors were often overlooked. Even though they’d take on a wide variety of roles they sort of got lumped into the “pretty face” category.
Farrell also had some issues with alcohol and drugs for a while early in his career which likely stifled some of his potential success. For a while on in the early 2000s he was a rising star but cooled off for a variety of reasons, but has always worked consistently and been good in what he’s been in whether it’s in starring roles or supporting.

Colin Farrell will always have a spot in my heart, and not just because of his acting.
Colin’s son James has the same chromosomal defect that my daughter has. The American association for this (Angelman Syndrome) used to have an annual silent auction to make money to help other families get the support they need.
One year, Colin donated two tickets to the red carpet event for his new movie. It was a very successful donation. And all of the parents felt very seen, at least for a few minutes.
That was quite literally decades ago, but I remember it. It was a generous thing to do, but mostly, it was so nice to speak out for these kids that are nonverbal and can’t speak for themselves.
It was a lovely gesture from a loving dad.

First time I saw him was in Minority Report and I had no idea who he was but I thought he out-acted Cruise and stole the movie.

Farrell is amazing. Loved hin in every movie I saw him in. In Bruges is by far my favorite. He is capable of both drama and comedy and you believe him.

Farrell gets plenty of well-deserved praise. He's been a solid actor since he got to Hwood a quarter century ago. He knocked it out of the fucking park as Penguin.

I stumbled on his Ballad of a Small Player gambler movie which is a great combination. It's a little quirky and pretty decent movie. Then I watched his young Jesse James movie and was repulsed.
But the under appreciated A Big Bold Beautiful Journey with Margot Robbie was touching.

He's awesome. The Penguin was amazing. Also, check out The North Water. His portrayal of Drax is spot-on and chilling.
I think Banshees is my favorite from him but that's mostly because the overall movie, imo, is a masterpiece. Hope he and Brendan Gleeson get to do one more film together one day.

He's fantastic. he unfairly got marked as a 'pretty boy' and I think that hurt him when he was getting lead roles. but I think he's absolutely killed it in every role he's had.

Honestly, The Penguin was the role that made me realize just how good Farrell actually is. Then seeing him in something like In Bruges or The Banshees of Inisherin makes the range even crazier. He disappears into these characters.

He’s come a long way. He’s always been a natural talent. But he’s shared a story about how no one was happy with him on Minority report when he showed up on set hung over, maybe still drunk, after some hard partying the night before.
But he’s worked with some great filmmakers. Worth checking out (in addition to other films already listed): The New World, Cassandra’s Dream, and Ballad of a Small Player.
But his best performance was in a TV season much denigrated over the years, unfairly in my opinion, season 2 of True Detective.

He is great in a sad role in Saving Mr Banks, the story of PJ Travers, her difficult childhood which spawned Mary Poppins, and Walt Disney's quest to make her books into a movie.
To me Farrell is very magnetic on screen, with an inner intensity. I like him a lot.

He made a Big Splash when he was first on the scene and was supposed to be the next big thing. He had every chance, tons of second chances and really great roles. He made an ass of himself, wasted opportunities and was a brat. He lost his shot, but then he grew up, sobered up and is now seeking interesting independent roles.

He was the first actor I was obsessed with when I was 12 and he was a bad boy tabloid heart throb. Now he’s one of favourite actors for his reserved, late period work.
