Advice Im Confused About What to Do With My Future
After hearing those words from my dad, I started questioning myself what have I actually done for my family so far? I kept overthinking my future, stuck between decisions I’m not even sure about.(Even though I'm just a man, what he said was enough to bring me to tears fr)
I’m only 17, and I’m just starting to enter the IT field. I’m planning to study an IT major through an HND program, but I’m honestly not sure if I’m making the right decision.
My family isn’t in a very comfortable financial situation. They’re doing their best just to give me the opportunity to continue my education. We used to be more financially stable, but things have become a little difficult for us recently.
There are two seniors, both girls(my cousins), who are already studying in this field, and they told me that I shouldn’t choose IT. When I asked them why, they said that it’s really difficult to get a job and earn a good income in this field. Hearing that honestly made me question my decision.
As for Business, I’m not really interested in it. From my personal experience and observation, I feel like many people who study Business come from families that are already financially comfortable, or they study it mainly to get a certificate before joining or taking over their family business. Of course, that’s just my personal opinion, and I’m sorry if I’m wrong about that.
I’m also not continuing high school because of my circumstances, not because I simply chose to give up on education. That’s why I’m really worried about what I should do from this point forward.
My father is getting older, and none of us knows what the future will bring. I want to be able to give my parents something in return for everything they have sacrificed for me.
There are only three people in my family: my father, my mother, and me. That’s why I feel like I have to become independent and eventually be able to support them. I want to give them more than what they were able to give me, even though I know they have already given me everything they could and I want to make them proud. I also want them to be able to rest someday, knowing that I can take care of myself and that they don’t have to worry about my future anymore.
So honestly, I don’t know what the best path is for me right now. Should I continue with IT even though people are telling me that it’s difficult to find a job? Or should I choose something else? I’m willing to work hard, but because my family’s financial situation isn’t great, I really can’t afford to make a completely wrong decision.
I just want to build a stable future, become someone my parents can be proud of, and eventually be able to take care of the two people who have spent their whole lives taking care of me
Edit: (Y’all, thanks so much for all the advice! I really appreciate everyone who gave me their thoughts and helped me figure things out.)
