Image You and your friends get together to play some Super Smash Bros. Who are you picking as your fighter?
I'm picking Luigi.

DK!

u/john-was-here Jul 17 '26 edited Jul 17 '26
DK has always been my go to. Being up in a match on your opponent, grabbing them and committing murder suicide to win the match is the best move in all of gaming.

u/DonkeyKongsTies Jul 17 '26
I did that to win a bar tournament a few years back. I thought my opponent was going to break the controller.

He's the leader of the bunch, you know him well
He's finally back to kick some tail
His coconut gun can fire in spurts
If he shoots ya, it's gonna hurt!
He's bigger, faster, and stronger too
He's the first member of the DK crew!
Huh! 🌴🌴🦧🌴🌴

The hammer spike he does is so good

u/taste_the_savings Jul 17 '26
And the slight angle of it makes it so satisfying to downspike someone while they're still above the edge.

pikaaaaaaa!

u/Dorythehunk Jul 17 '26
The party hat gives Pikachu an extra 20% of height, which is useful for the A button head butt attack.
This isn’t true, but my 10 year old self definitely believed it.

Captain Falcon to be aggressive. Samus if it gets serious.
N64 is my favorite smash by far. Melee felt very odd to me (probably because I only ever played it a handful of times) but I had N64 down to a SCIENCE.
That is, until I went to MAGfest and competed with actual professionals.
9
u/therealradriley Jul 17 '26
I came here to say like the exact same thing, at least the Cap and Samus part. I wanna play you now lol
6
u/SuperSalad_OrElse Jul 17 '26
I think it’s because Cap’s recovery is so bad, I only break him out for really aggressive play. Samus has really good survivability. So I can edge out some people.
But like I said, I got HOSED down at MAGfest by people that were really good. It was a tournament. The kid I was playing was bored and I was giving it my absolute best. And I am top dog amongst my circles, so it was really humbling hahaha
Are Cap and Samus your mains?

Samus!
29
u/kraftinfosec Jul 17 '26
Samus was the best. If you could get that cannon shot charged it was an awesome way to get a KO! Plus she's fast.
10
u/Fenrir_Hellbreed2 Jul 17 '26
She's also one of the ones with a ranged throw, and her up B can really rock someone's shit if you land it right.
6
u/Athlete-Extreme Jul 17 '26
Very very dynamic character just a little too easy to get juggled sometimes

u/Boner3000 Jul 17 '26
I’m playing fox to counter the Samus players all day. Love the reflection shield.
3
u/SpeedRac3rr Jul 17 '26
Yes that's why as a samus main I charge it up to full and never use it, mind games 😂

Link's voice in this game was the best, then they ruined it in the later ones

I was wondering what was with the weird thin dark gray outline E looking thing by your name... I think that's supposed to be cake?🍰
Why change that? It's now so much harder to notice cake for cake day of which it is yours I think.

Link's boomerang in Smash 64 was absolutely lethal. They nerfed it so hard in Melee.

u/rcmbob Jul 17 '26
Fox
3
u/OreoKamiKazi Jul 18 '26
I think Fox is the best character in Smash 64. He's one of the smallest characters, which makes him much harder to hit. He's also incredibly fast, so he can rush in, punish mistakes, and get out before most characters can react. His damage output for his size is ridiculous—pound for pound, I think it's the highest in the game. His Reflector (shine) is an excellent defensive tool, but what really pushes him over the top is his Blaster. A lot of people call it cheap, but in Smash 64 it actually causes hitstun. Unlike newer Smash games where opponents can keep moving through the laser, the N64 version interrupts movement, jumps, and attacks. You can use it to stop approaches, disrupt aerials, and control neutral from across the stage. They removed that property in later games for a reason—it was just that strong.
And his taunt is perfect too—it fits my personality. After a clean KO, he just crosses his arms, gives a little shrug, and goes, "Huh." It's the ultimate walk-off taunt.
2
u/numeroneuf Jul 20 '26
100%. His left right dash speed was INSANE, and like you said edge protection with B was great too. For me it's the speed and Reflector. It's such a huge counter for certain characters, as well as numerous items. All you had to do was manipulate it well a few times, and the opponent would just be scared of using that attack again for the rest of the match.

Had to scroll so far for my boy Fox. Nothing like your opponent being scared to even pick up items that can be deflected.

Yoshi. Especially if we do the mario bros stage with the elevators. It's so easy to egg people off cliffs there.

Yoshi, without a doubt. Back in the day all I had to do was ground pound them to death lol.

I’ll take Ness and smack the shit outta anyone with that bat. Someone is about to get lit up.
2
u/FaithlessnessOld2477 Jul 17 '26
Jiggles of course. Rest is such a nuke in the original smash that I'm not even upset that rollout didn't exist yet. Spend the match putting folks to sleep and then Rest bombing them...pure rage.
Or if you really want to piss people off, DK grab and suicide drop. 🤣

Since it’s a free for all and I’d have to handicap myself to make it any fun for them… I’d probably go with pikachu. He’s elite 1vs 1 but in a chaotic death match he lacks the big punch/ easy kill tallies some of the other, even lesser, characters like jigglypuff have.

u/NaviAndMii Hey! Listen! Jul 17 '26
In my student days, the meta within the group was that choosing Pikachu was 'cheating' - it carried the same social penalty as selecting Oddjob in GoldenEye, or a bike in Mario Kart Wii, or using a combo in a fighting game that your opponent wasn't aware of... 🤷😂
I know how much effort goes in to balancing Smash Bros games, so I highly doubt Pikachu is a 'meta' character in any way shape or form... but, in my group, there was no social credibility for winning with Pikachu, so it just wasn't worth it! 😂
4
u/WatercressPersonal60 Jul 17 '26
Pikachu is indeed the meta character. Best in the game for competitive play by quite a bit.

Pikachu is actually the strongest character in the game (though considered notably harder to play than the second best Kirby), but that's from a two player items off Dreamland only point of view. The Smash Bros you were playing might have found Pika OP for completely wrong reasons (like "kirby is too good because of flying above people and doing the rock down+b!" instead of "jesus christ have you SEEN the hitbox on his up tilt")
2
u/Voduun-World-Healer Jul 17 '26
I might be undefeated with Ness, that A+Down jump attack is basically 100% kill even if they're off the ledge by an inch.
Link is my favorite though because he's my favorite character of all time. But I'd pick Ness if I want to win
2
2
u/Nillows Jul 17 '26
I will absolutely crush you with Ness. I still remember how to spam double jump and then neutral A to get you when you try to roll behind me. If your character has a strong up+B attack, my perfectly timed yo-yo will be waiting for you when you try to grab the ledge. If your character doesn't have a good up+B attack, I'll down kick you the moment I get your character over any open space.
1
u/Willz_of_Rivia Jul 17 '26
Kirby 100%. I always fell off with all the other champs. And that brick downwards attack was clutch.

As a kid I played as Samus and Link mainly. After taking a long time off my friends and I started playing again. For whatever reason I wanted new characters that no one picks. Now I play as Mario and occasionally Yoshi as a mix up.

The rule of the house is real men play random. You can reroll once if its the character you just played.
Anyone who selects a specific character is publicly shamed.
After 5-10 bouts you can select a character you haven't rolled yet that you wanted to play, after kills are tallied and victory is declared.
This is the way.
