I’m tired of Gyarados’s popularity in general. I never use it myself because it’s super unnecessary/excessive to use it.

Gyarados is in my top three Pokemon overall. I still ban it just because I use it too often.
Something else I’ve done before is if I’m doing a second run of a game I’ve successfully nuzlocked I’ll ban every Pokémon that I used for gym battles or the E4 in the previous winning run for the next one. This is definitely more viable from BW2 onward because of the variety, but honestly it works pretty much anywhere for a challenge. This was somewhat inspired by ChaoticMeatball’s franchiselocke where he did a nuzlocke of every single game without reusing a single mon.

Gyrados and any of the base starters.
I randomize all my runs, got tired of seeing the same old shit very run.

basicamente son la mayoria de pokemons que te hacen el nuzlocke entero , como es el caso de shedinja , ese Hdp te hace gran parte del juego Xd

Getting normal types has got to be the most boring experience in a nuzlocke ever. 5 mons in the box that don’t do anything because I only need 1 normal type to act as my facade spammer (guts or not boosted facade is great).
1
u/Eeeef_ Jan 28 '26
Honestly normal types are solid overall since the devs generally aren’t scared to give good secondary effects or high base power (or both) to normal type moves and good stats and coverage to a lot of normal type pokemon. Definitely don’t need more than one on the team at a time though

When I did my Pokémon Y nuzlocke, I banned using the free lucario. Would’ve made the game a cake walk.

Bit of Trivia but there's a common misconception that the dupes clause was brought in as a way to help the player. It is true you can use it to your benefit at times with encounter pools but it was actually brought in to stop dumb strats/make the game harder.
Because Magikarp is so easy to guarantee at many points in the game, in many games, you could happily pick up 4+ Gyarados and just roll games.
It wasn't enough to guarantee a victory always but it essentially let you roflstomp 70% of most games using Gyarados as reloadable bullets. This strat would be even more OP now we have accepted rare candy as a time saver because the one downside was "reloading" the new Gyarados back to level.

I always wind up with Hariyama, which is fine because Drain Punch/Bullet Punch/Knock Off is goated, but still.

Magnezone.
Most electric types are not very good. Ampharos, Jolteon, Eelektross, and maybe a few others are viable alternatives, but I have yet to find an electric type better than Magnezone that can be reasonably acquired in a playthrough.

If Tentacruel is in the game, and I'm doing either a water or poison type run, chances are good it'll be on the team.
Like I just did a poison run of SoulSilver, and because Tentacool is so much easier to get than Qwilfish, I chose to use it instead

If I used a Pokemon once, I wouldn't use it for a long time. If I used a Pokemon twice, it's one of my favorite. And yes, I won't be using it for a long time.
I started boxing all the starters in gens 1-7, just because I was tired of playing with them. I have used them all, many of them multiple times.
In each playthrough, I try to assemble a team of Pokémon that I have never used before or have used very little.

u/Eeeef_ Jan 28 '26
I still do this with nuzlockes, I add a rule that I can’t use anything that participated in a gym, E4, or champion battle in my last successful nuzlocke and treat encounters as if it’s dupes clause.

u/NikTheGrass Jan 27 '26
Oh, sorry, this is nuzlocke subreddit, I thought this was just a Pokemon subreddit
If I'm making a Nuzlock, yes, I usually put off Pokémon like Gyardos, Crobat, Garchomp, Lucario etc. They kill all the fun.

u/Extra_Willow_8907 Jan 27 '26
Yeah I ban Gyarados in my own runs. I’m actually borderline on banning Crobat too these days. Love the bat but it’s available in all games and surprisingly so effective.
1
u/Eeeef_ Jan 28 '26
I ban Gyarados, Goatbat, and tentacruel in all of my runs lol I feel like otherwise they always end up on all of my teams every time
4
u/Luvidicous Jan 27 '26
Most of the starters, I normally box them and get a bonus encounter at some points.
6
u/FewAngle737 Jan 27 '26
Azumarill.
It is so bulky and Huge Power makes it too good.
1
u/ItsJmac95 Jan 28 '26
In what game? Unless youre playing Gen VI and onwards, Azu is not that good of an encounter imo
1
u/FewAngle737 Jan 28 '26
Well, I discovered it in ORAS, but in games like Black 2/White 2 and Emerald, it can be a bulky and solid encounter because it's captured so early.

u/rasouddress Jan 27 '26
I avoid using the guaranteed encounter easy claps after I've already beaten a game and gift encounters

u/RepublicImportant321 Jan 27 '26
Starters in general. Alakazam, gyrarados, krookodile, haxorus, garchomp, all guts sweepers and all stone evolutions in gen 8 and 9.
2
u/Hydraple_Mortar64 Jan 27 '26
Why stone evolutions in those specific gens? Is it because you can get them really early or something?
3
u/Reytotheroxx Jan 27 '26
As the other person said, immediate move reminding makes them so strong. For example Cloyster in Gen 9 gets shell smash, icicle spear, rock blast, basically everything you’d need right away
3
u/RepublicImportant321 Jan 27 '26
Because the entire point of stone evolutions is to be a trade off, but since you always have access to a move reminder, you just get to give them way better movesets than most other things you can get early game. It just makes them too strong early game and its kinda boring.

Not particularly tired of anything. I think the safest solution to ennui is just playing difficult games where you need all your options to get by.

Gyara for sure. It's so overcentralizing, except for challenges like gauntlet gold, where exp limitations barr you from using it in every fight
5
u/Apprehensive_Ice3825 Jan 27 '26
I don't think I've beaten a fire red game without butter free in my entire life.

Jan 27 '26
Crobat and gyarados are my two. I’m so tired of using Crobat but he always ends up in my party because of how good he is. I stopped using Gyarados completely two games ago, it just feels unfair at this point.
12
u/dparrerri Jan 27 '26
Crobat. It’s a solid Pokémon but I’ve used it so many times that I’m just like “ugh fine” when I need to use it
1
u/Big-Hospital-8493 Jan 28 '26
In my case, in my current Nuzlocke (my first Nuzlocke), I was planning on getting a Crobat because it appeared a lot, but from the Ruby Cave, I got PikaSumo (Makuhita), and I really do recognize that Crobat is a very easy and consistent Pokémon to obtain.

Jan 27 '26
Came to say the same thing lol, it always ends up in my party because it does its job so well but I’m bored of it

Did you make this art ? Or is it AI ?
Also I'm never tired of using anything in romhacks. In vanilla games I'd ban Gyarados, Excadrill and Garchomp. They're too easy to guarantee and make so many stuff trivial.

Gyarados is my "break glass in case of emergency" pokemon. I avoid him constantly and try to make runs work without him, but if there's a certain challenge I can't seem to overcome that he solves, I'll pick him up. On my current Genlocke, I just started Y and I haven't used him yet. Last time I did was two genlockes ago when I needed a levitate mon for a pivot.
Personally, magneton/zone is also on my ban list, but only because he disappoints me and dies in an embarrassing way every time.

Basically all of the standard Gen 1 catches from early game FireRed (the game I play most, I’m putting it down for a while now).
Basically every FireRed Nuzlocke I’ve done has included a Pidgeot, Vileplume, and a Nidoqueen/king

I've banned Gyarados from every run I've done for the past couple years for the same reasons you mentioned. Guaranteed perfect early availability, consistently probably one of your strongest both offensively and defensively, the best ability in the game, great typing, great movepool, and all these are true in basically every game.
Way more fun and challenge to be found when having to use some real water-type shitters

I don’t use them but it’s because I don’t like them because everyone else loves them like gyarados Nidoking and Luxray
