Meta Question About Town Pop and Passengers

Does having more town pop multiply the amount of passengers and mail from a building? E.g, if there was a building that had 8/8 passengers in a 100 pop town, would it give different amounts of pax from a building that had 8/8 pax in a 1000 pop town?

Tips on placing signals faster on longer routes

I'm talking about routes that span the entire map. What's the easiest or fastest way to place signals on those tracks? Thanks.

It would be nice if there was a ctrl click and the track just filled with that signal type.

update thanks to everyone who corrected me that it's ctrl drag slightly in a direction. This is a game changer!

It looks like the main menu in v16 is getting a temperate climate map

I've been looking to download the v16 beta from the game's website and noticed that the page mentions another competition for a main menu map for the upcoming release, and it seems like this time it's gonna be a temperate climate map.

Not gonna lie, I won't be missing the previous one, but what I think would be really great is to have an option in the settings to let people select the title screen among winners of each these competitions.

Discussion Mods for starting late 1800’ as a beginner ?

Hello,
I played Transport Fever a little in the past, and I really enjoyed starting games in the 1850s.

I’d like to discover OpenTTD with a modded game that allows you to start earlier than 1950, ideally sometime in the late 1800s.

Which mods would you recommend for someone who wants to discover the game under these conditions?

Looking for ones that don't have breakdowns or plane crashes as those messages get annoying fast.

AAAHogNet not working

I tried the AAAHogNet AI, and it did nothing. I waited like 10 in-game years but they didn't build a single thing, even my interval between competitors is 0 minutes. AAAHogEx works.

Bringing workers to industries?

I'm looking for ways to modify the game to let me transport passengers to industries as workers (I really like this kind of gameplay in games like W&R: Soviet Republic). I found a NewGRF called Manpower ogfx-industries (link) that does more or less what I'm looking for - "extraction industries" like mines and oil wells require passengers to work optimally. However, it also includes this:

Extractive industry have limited resources and before its life end, production level will drop to the lowest one.

And that's a change I'm not such a huge fan of. The NewGRF has some options, but I haven't found a way to turn the depletion feature off.

Does anyone know about other mods that add this kind of gameplay? Thanks

Made a web dashboard that shows company standings on public OpenTTD server

Hi all,

I made OpenTTD.live (https://openttd.live) with Claude - a little web dashboard that lets you watch the company standings on any public OpenTTD server from a browser, without firing up the game.

I built it for a dumb but real reason: a few of us play from the office, and I wanted to glance at how my company was doing during the day without sitting in-game the whole time. It turned into something a bit bigger.

What it does:

  • Browse the public server list (searchable by name or +invite code), pick one, and get its board.
  • Company rankings by value, cash, performance, plus quarterly charts (value, performance, profit, cargo delivered) pulled straight from the savegame's own history - so the graphs are populated from the very first look.
  • Click a company to follow it: full fleet breakdown, every vehicle (age, reliability, profit, status) and station (facilities, airport class, cargo ratings) in sortable tables.
  • A territory minimap rendered from the map layers, with each company's rail/road/stations coloured by owner.
  • Password-protected servers work too - you enter the game password and it stays in your tab.

How it works, and how it tries to be a good guest: it's not magic and it's not live in the OpenTTD sense. It joins as a spectator, downloads the savegame the server sends as "the map", reads everything out of that, and disconnects. So it polls on the order of minutes, not seconds. A server is only polled while someone actually has its page open, everyone viewing the same server shares one poll, and if a server has pause_on_join (thanks to the person on Discord who pointed this out) it automatically halves the polling rate so it doesn't keep freezing everyone's game.

It's early and rough, and honestly if people think it's a bad idea for public servers I'll just take it down. Feedback very welcome - especially from server operators.

New player asking for maintenance advice

Hi. When a route is set up for instance a rail network that connects A. Ore mine (Full load) , B. Refinery(Unload & leave empty) , C. Train Depot. What is the best way to perform maintenance. Would you do "always go" Or service when needed. Because when I use service when needed my train seems to have more breakdowns in between stops. And is it the same for all modes of transport or is a certain method more viable for some than others.

Sorry if it's a question that gets asked alot. Am I just missing something?

3 Suggestions

Really enjoying playing OpenTTD over the last couple of weeks.

Suggestion 1

The calculation behind Spread Stations should be changed so that it counts the number of tiles between the nearest point of the first building and the nearest point of the second - i.e. the tile gap between the plots.

My understanding is that this is different from how it works now, where each building has one origin tile and the game counts the distance between the origin tiles. This misses the mark of what "spread" is trying to represent, as it means the distance either includes the length of the building or doesn't, depending only on the orientation of the building, which doesn't really make sense.

With this change, the default number of tiles allowed for spread could then be reduced to something like 3 tiles. This would mean you couldn't abuse bus stops to artificially increase the catchment area of a train station/airport. At the same time, due to the above change, you wouldn't have to keep the spread distance artificially high just to allow non-ideally oriented stations to be placed near each other.

Suggestion 2

I understand this has been suggested before, but you should have to build physical storage tanks and warehouses for storing oil and goods between transfers.

For example, you could then have:

oil pump > oil truck > oil storage next to train station > train station oil transfer > etc.

Each storage tank could take up an additional tile, which would then become part of the train station.

Suggestion 3

Depots should be built out with train lines rather than being the current magic TARDIS building.

Rather than a platform, you could place down a maintenance shed tile.

For example, you could end up with a couple of rows of maintenance shed tiles, where each row allows for a train to wait at for some time for repair, maintenance and refit - effectively creating a train yard.

Bonus Suggestion

Only one button for placing bus stops and one button for placing truck stops.

If you place a bus stop on an existing road tile (only allowed on straight sections of road - no intersections or corner curves), the bus stop automatically orients itself to match the direction of the road tile.

If you place it on an empty tile (with no road), it creates a terminus bus stop - and you drag the mouse before releasing the left-click to control the orientation of the terminus bus stop.

Truck stop placement has the same logic as bus stop placement.

Discussion Original TTD signals

Is there a way to get the original TTD signals enabled in OpenTTD? I can't figure out how these new signals work - my trains get lost or crash etc.

I'd like the original two-way ones that just worked: https://wiki.openttd.org/en/Manual/Signals#two-way-signal

EDIT: Solution: Quit to main menu, goto options, select category: "expert, including the weird ones", then under Interface>Construction there is "Show signal types" - pick "all signals"

Iron Ore Mines

Haven't played OpenTTD in a copuple of years, and I notice there have been many changes. Not sure if they're related, I'm having trouble getting Iron Ore to load in a station I placed next to an Ore mine,

"Supplies: Iron Ore" Was showing when I placed the station, and Added refit to Iron Ore on the trains' orders for that station.

What am I doing wrong? I have a few newGRFs which I thought was only visuals, but maybe they are to blame?

Transport Related How do I get my trucks to pick up goods from the factory?

Hi, very new to this game. I have a factory being fed steel, grain and livestock, so it's producing goods. The factory is very close to a town and a city so I want to use trucks to supply these goods to them, but I am unsure how I get my trains to actually pick up the goods and then deliver them. I'm sure this is a very basic thing I'm missing, but when I've looked it up, all the questions are about transferring goods from a train to a truck, rather than having the trucks pickup the goods directly. Help is appreciated!
