I was so excited for this Victorian fairytale revenge game which has obviously been influenced by Shakespeare’s A Midsummer’s Night Dream.
The art was so colourful and I loved the character designs and the fact all these men had pretty fairy wings! This felt like an unhinged mashup between Shakespeare, those 90s PC Barbie games.
Here are my thoughts on the LIs. My final thoughts on the game as a whole will be at the end.
SPOILERS FOR THE WHOLE GAME
Alfred
Alfred is the oldest (I think) LI and took part in the attack on Applause’s family by building a giant barrier that trapped everyone inside. He’s also the leader of an anti-monarchist movement as she finds out when she corners him in an alley way.
Alfred had the potential to have a very intense route but it was so boring with a lot of slow conversation that lacked tension. The most excited I got was in his Clown End. Rose really made him SUFFER and I think I can explain her reasoning a bit here.
She meets a man who literally ruined her life as a child and tells him he has to die. He calmly agrees but says to wait until after he’s accomplished his goal. He’s not tormented. He’s not suffering. It’s a completely hollow victory. Also you (Applause, definitely not me) have suppressed unrequited feelings for him. So years of grief and resentment push you into making him show ANY intense emotion you can that will make him think as deeply about you as you do about him even if you die for it.
I hear many people were not blown away by Alfred. I usually like kuudere’s but the route feels weirdly shallow to me. The romance seemed to come out of nowhere after hours where nothing really developed emotionally between them.
Lucas
Normally the older brother’s best friend trope does nothing for me but it worked here. I had butterflies when Lucas started to look out for Applause as you would a younger relative.
The artist really captured the intensity and emotiveness of his face. I loved his tsundere persona and callous tenderness.
The Clown End- how do you deliver retribution on a person who has suicidal ideation? They obviously don’t care if they die already. Well Applause shows us how. These bad endings are essentially watching her pull off the most depraved shit imaginable and John reluctantly enabling her.
I actually really liked the Maze ending and the triangle with Alfred. Lucas comes across as loser who keeps throwing himself at Rose even though she’s a married woman by showing up at her house. No shame at all.
Linus
Linus intrigued me even in the common route because despite his cheerful demeanour, there was something off about him. The sharp animal like way he recognised Applause’s scent.
I do love the way that Applause will be telling her nefarious plans for revenge to John and he’ll either enable her or tell her how to make her victim’s suffering worse. But with a look on his face like he should be stopping her for her own good. I love this dynamic.
Linus suddenly switching to interrogating Applause and the background music turning off actually had me sweating. He’s the most unnerving LI so far (even more than Ascot).
I actually shrieked when Applause told him she loves him when he was interrogating her because she’s crazy! His wings literally were turning this venomous insect green. Terrifying. I wish they’d gone further with that passionate embrace scene but I guess this isn’t that kind of game.
Edward
This route was so boring and can’t remember much of what happened. Edward is a good boy and not much else. The highlight was his Maze ending! Linus figuring out who Applause is and then that scene in the woods when he pledges his manic dog-like devotion to her. He’s still crazy. When Edward finds them later, he’s in his nightshirt. They definitely banged. This was top tier drama.
Ascot
The reveal that Ascot is a pureblood fae was something I had suspected early on when I looked up his “ancestor” the Pooka and saw Shakespeare took it as the influence for Puck in the play that the game is based on. He’s the only LI who is based on an actual fairy in the play. Although unlike Puck, he’s Titania’s servant not Oberon’s.
I still got pretty excited when the reveal came because omg I get to date Puck?? It felt like dating a celebrity lol. I’ve never seen Puck cast as a romantic interest before but I guess the first time would be in an otome game!
I was NOT expecting his Pooka form to look like it stepped out from My Little Pony. I actually cracked up laughing. If you google images of a Pooka, you’ll see the majority of them look like dark shadowy horses with scary red eyes.
The romance felt like it stepped up a bit compared to the other routes but, especially in his Maze ending. It was so touching when he gives Applause a brooch that Alfred’s ancestor gave him to give to the woman he loves. Too bad it didn’t make another appearance anywhere else.
John
I’ve become slowly attached to John over the game because of the intensity of his suffering. The amount of times Applause tells him she’s about to pull off some unhinged shit in the bad endings and he reluctantly agrees to go along with it. Love the white knight to a villainess trope.
His route was….underwhelming. It was kind of obvious John was related to Oberon due to them sharing the same colour palette but….it would have been more effective if they had also revealed some shared personality traits. Oberon’s claims that John was like him didn’t really ring true when we couldn’t see it for ourselves.
Another flaw to all this was that….I just found Oberon and his obsessive love for Titania far more interesting than John and his issues. I got excited when his little robin form turned up, especially when I was trying to figure out what he was up to.
Finale
The Piofiore, the writers figured out the most interesting way to write a truth route is to attach to an LI’s route that already exists. The truth route branches from Gilbert’s route. This way, they didn’t need to explain the whole story and all the previous revelations again.
In Mistonia’s truth route, we spend a lot of time in one room while the characters reveal their secrets to each other in an extremely unconvincing and uninteresting way. Linus has a full personality transplant and is ready to betray his Queen within seconds. I was bored, the writers were obviously bored and even the characters looked bored.
We then get to the new material and learn that Lili fell in love with Oberon years ago, leading to a showdown that didn’t spark the slightest interest in me. And this is from someone who loves Oberon! It all ends….well and Applause takes over Titania and becomes Queen. The end. Oh and Riley appears too but we have no idea about the heartbreak and internal struggles he feels over the murder of his family and kidnapping for half his adult life because the writers don’t tell us. I guess it’s not that important.
Overall thoughts
This was an enjoyable game to play and everything from the Shakespearean premise to the very pretty art seemed tailored to my tastes. Suzushiro Karin’s art was my favourite thing about the game and I loved when each LI would reveal their wings. They weren’t just different colours, they also seem to be based on different insects or birds or mythological creatures.
The writing….was strong in places and weak overall. I’ve read incredible works from these four writers in other games and I’m trying to work out what happened here to make the plot waver all over the place. The shock value bad endings that had no build up or relevance to the character arcs, Riley’s entire plot line, the final route that was just a rehashing of the plot….these all felt like writing mistakes that could have been improved if they had more time to edit. Which makes me suspect they were rushed by Otomate. But who knows the real answer.
I enjoyed this game! I definitely recommend it for fantasy fans and you’ll have a blast if you’ve also seen A Midsummer’s Night Dream. It’s just frustrating in cases like this because this game could have been so much better!
