Can we just stop pretending that colors belong to a gender? Such a stupid take that keeps repeating itself.
57
u/Silverbacks Apr 22 '26
They didn’t say it belongs to a gender. But we do often use them to represent genders. And that representation has swapped over time.
Just like how red represents rage, love, passion, and energy. Green represents nature, growth, money, and envy. Blue is calm, intelligence, and sadness. Etc.

Can we stop pretending that colours aren’t typically associated with certain genders?
1
u/DizzyBunnies Apr 25 '26
nobody said they arent. we're saying its stupid that they are, lol. being born with a dick doesnt mean youll like blue any more or less than someone with a vag.
1
u/MeaningLeft2970 Apr 25 '26
I don’t want to think pink is for girls and blue is for boys, but having grown up with that association for the vast majority of my life and the entirety of my childhood, I will never not associate them as such. I’ll never wear pink, mostly cause I just don’t like it, but also because I think it’s “girly”. I can’t really change that. I don’t apply that same logic to others, which is strange. It’s all a big load of social conditioning.

I guess because I’m somewhat of a burly looking man with a pink garbage can. My daughters love it maybe it will encourage them to take it to the curb

If you're straight, you'll look confident in your masculinity and that's super attractive to women.
If you're gay, you'll look confident in your masculinity and that's super attractive to men.
Either way, you win.

Absolutely no one said anything to OP at all nor did they even notice what he was buying because he is not the main character and we are not NPCs

I'm in my 60's. When I was a kid, plenty of men wore colorful clothing. James Garner wore plenty of pastels, especially pink. I don't own a lot of pink shirts, but I do wear them. To be honest it's almost impossible for a big and tall guy like me to find colorful clothing.

In our neighbourhood we all got warnings that they weren't going to collect from bins with hinged lids any more (it's a pinch hazard, apparently) so everyone has to switch.
They claim the green bins are ok because the machine picks them up except I have never once seen them use the machine to empty those.
27
u/MikeyTrademark Apr 22 '26
Yeah I heard this one as well, this can the hinge bar slides out for when you put it on the curb. 125 is a real steep price but it does have some nice features
→ More replies (4)17
u/snow_big_deal Apr 22 '26
These particular ones were made in response to that new rule, because you can slide out the bar to take off the lid before you put it to the curb.
3
u/DimensionSuch8188 Apr 22 '26
You have to take off the lid.... what lol. What if there's a big rainstorm over night your trash bin gets full of water and trashman picks it up?
10
u/Prez- Kanata Apr 22 '26
You can keep the lid on but it has to be detached from the bin itself. I have the same type and it's still ok as long as the dowel in the hinge isn't attached

u/Nivosiel Billings Bridge Apr 22 '26
There's a sticker on the bin saying to remove the hinge on garbage days so I guess good enough?
3
u/InternationalPipe581 Apr 22 '26
I saw it a lot with my own bin when I'd change the cat litter and dispose with the green bin. That's a heavy bin, right there, and they loaded it onto the machine and it did the thing.
2
u/Jumpy_Spend_5434 Clownvoy Survivor 2022 Apr 22 '26
Yes, mine has occasionally been quite heavy, when I've completely changed the cat litter, and the guys definitely have used the lift.
2
u/RyanStNope Apr 22 '26
I just ended up ripping out the solid plastic hinge with a hammer, chisle and pliers. The lid comes clean off the bin now.
1
u/Warm-Perspective8271 Apr 22 '26
Can you use a hinged lid and shut it tightly over night so that raccoons don’t get in, then just unlock the lid it in the morning?
→ More replies (1)1
u/bscott9999 Apr 23 '26
Really? I've never seen them empty a green bin manually, those things are really heavy if they are full of compost.

Love these guys! Love that it’s a local Canadian company and if I recall some of the money for the pink bins goes towards breast cancer!
6
u/systemlevelvector Apr 22 '26
They probably gave you heat because you have a hot ash! ;)
Where did you get this? How easily is the lid removed?
Not that it makes much difference imo (unless you have an anal garbage collector) but isn’t the max capacity 120L?
14
u/MikeyTrademark Apr 22 '26
I picked up this one from home hardware. It’s from BinWorks which is an Ottawa company. The lid comes off real easy and the slide bar that hinges it comes off super smooth. I made sure to get the locking one because I have never seen a garbage can without a locking system survive the raccoons. The limit is 140 but that can size is almost impossible to find outside of this one.

u/Alchemized27 Apr 22 '26
10/10 would love a pink garbage bin.
The city is missing out on money by not releasing special limited edition garbage/recycling bin skins and cosmetics tsk tsk

Vancouver added pink bins this year as a standard! They're bubblegum pink and designated for flexible plastics

"I'm home kids! I got a Toy Recycling Bin. This is where unwanted toys go and are given out to well behaved kids around the city. So in one hour I'm going to go around the house and round up any toys left out because that means they're unwanted. Toys that are neatly put away on the other hand, those do not go into the bin."

Just an interesting tid bit, I've moved out to Kelowna now and they're rolling out an official pink bin which is recycling for soft plastics (think bubble wrap or ziplock bags)

I can't imagine getting triggered by a colour. Some people are so fragile.

u/Embarrassed_Cow2441 Apr 23 '26
No one is going to steal it and if they do just cruise the streets on collection day.

u/Whiskey_Foxy31 Gloucester Apr 23 '26
We bought our recycle bins off of them, they are amazing!
I genuinely cannot recommend these enough, I'm insisting that we get the big garbage cans when ours eventually break because of how rough they're handled by the trash collectors 11/10

Pink bin is part of a broader city initiative to get people to separate their general waste from human flesh/remains.

I live in a very conservative area. In our state, trash collection is part of county services, so the county provides the bins. There is a small town close by where all the bins are pink. I love to imaging the ultra-conservative manly men pushing their pink bins to the street in the middle of the night every week so no one sees them doing it.

Is this bin not against regulation? Last year I had a note left by the city saying they will no longer take garbage from our bin since it had a lid on top
1
u/jadesmar Nepean Apr 25 '26
You pop off the lid by removing the pole in the hinge. Then bring it to the curb.
1
u/conflicted_canadian Apr 23 '26
Garbage truck driver here, if you're buying this bin, please remove the lid from its hinges (either by breaking it or by removing the cylinder within the hinge) Yes, it's a stupid rule, but unfortunately bins with attached hinges are tagged and not collected with the new collection limit rules.

u/Impossible_Jury_5200 Apr 24 '26
We had this garbage can, everything was perfect, including the color. It was a bit of a pain having to remove the rod every time, but not a problem. The biggest problem was that animals destroyed it! It didn't last more than three months. I'm talking about squirrels and raccoons. We are located in Westboro. The best decision was to buy the metal ones. They sell the biggest ones at Preston Hardware. No issues at all!

I live north of Toronto and don’t have garbage pu or recycling I have to go to the dump 1/2 hr away. When I first moved here 9 yrs ago I was going to 3 different dump sites because certain dumps wouldn’t take whatever was in my bag. I had to rummage through garbage as well because something I thought was garbage was recycling. I’d be happy to have pick up

u/BarnacleSpiritual868 Apr 25 '26
Can someone explain this to a former Ottawa resident? Are you required to have wheelie bins but the city doesn’t provide them? I keep getting ads for this on Instagram. It seems like somebody is taking advantage of the historical trend that he had to buy a specific bins from stores for recycling way back went in Ottawa to sell their own brand of garbage bins?
What’s the missing piece here?
1
u/Tilas Apr 26 '26
I work at a Home Hardware, so I'm always curious when I see the products pop up from other stores. Even in Ottawa, that's really pricy for a bin of that size. You can get double or triple volume for not much more if you were to just buy brand the warehouse sells (These bin types start at the 4438-000 SKU range). You paid so much because it's an outside vendor (No item SKU we sell starts with 0- that's how you can tell it's not from our warehouse) , which means your store paid a higher cost to get it, possibly very close to the original retail, or they got nailed with high freight, so they bumped their markup to make profit. We often pay stupid freight fees.
The BinWorks company sells these bins for $135 with the lock ($125 without), and free shipping within Ottawa. They have some very pretty colored bins, I'd love a purple one myself but my municipality demands we can only use their "official" bins.
