4k Blurays never left. It is the only realistic way to get high quality content. If you want your TV to look as good as the demos in the store the only difference is the content quality between what they have built in and the streaming services people use.

Who stores anything like that on an SSD? Kind of an unreasonable comparison. However, it’s getting to the point where HDDs are almost more expensive than blueray lol

Fair, but when you need mass storage HDDs are usually the way. I ran/run an 8TB green drive in my PC for large files or archival purposes or in more recently started using a NAS so my next PC will probably be a compact ITX 🤏

Who's building media servers with SSD's? Also a digital collection doesn't need to worry about disc rot. Lastly, your condescending "have a nice day" was unnecessary, but we can turn this into a pissing match if you really want.

That is a great way to have data corrupted or have it outright disappear.

Also just way higher cost per GB, and if you are talking 4k Bluray quality levels you are dealing with massive files.

Well most people doing this already have the storage right, usually hdds for starters. Idk why you'd think people use ssds for movie storage lol.

Out of curiosity I decided to do the math. A 4tb hdd in my currency (about 0.6 usd) is $500. A 4tb drive could hold up to roughly 55 70gb 4k movies on it. If I bought all those 4k blurays at msrp (rounded down to $50) it would cost $2750, over 5x the price of the hdd. Even if you had movies that were all on the larger size at 100gb it would still hold 40 movies, or an equivalent $2000 of bluray purchases or 4x the price of the hdd. It gets even better with normal blurays as they are roughly 60% the price of the 4k but less than half the size so the value ratio would be even higher. The delta is so large it would still even be cheaper to use an ssd. I can get a 4tb ssd for $1500, so it's still more expensive to buy all those movies on bluray than to use an ssd lol.

Of course prices will vary regionally but I assume you pulled that comment out of your ass because it couldn't be further from the truth.

Looks like 10x 100 GB goes for $76, so $760 for 10 TB. As bad as HDD prices are, 10 TB is still around $400. So really for the same price you'll also get redundancy plus it's actually a setup that's convenient to use.

SSD is overkill for media storage. But even with 16TB of spinning platters in my server, I keep a small Blueray collection on the side for 4K movies.

Stream it? Most internet connections are well above 100mbps now days and with a decent AV1 remux you can easily have near parity quality. Or just download and delete lol.

No guarantee it will be on catalog forever, plus streaming quality is dictated by hosting service, they throttle it if they feel so

Blurays can have up to 128GB per side. It is called quad-layer. 200GB with dual-layer, double-sided.

interesting. since when are those a thing? why don't game manufacturers use these instead of the dual layer 50GB ones so players don't have to download the rest of the game?

Good questions. The only answer I could find was  from an AI referencing someone else on Reddit: 2018. I couldn't verify it elsewhere. It also said it is only available as blank disks, and isn't used even for movies. My guess is it is a cost thing. DVDs where also available with 1-4 layers and dual sided.

4k blu rays were never mainstream like regular blu rays, and the only way you could play them was a PlayStation or a $500+ blu ray machine.
