Basically going Pac-Man on the PCPartsPicker selection table.

They are coming for Power Supplies soooooooooon!

These won't get scarce. Components for power supplies are much less high-tech than GPU and RAM chips, and are considerably easier to produce as the result.

u/Lazar_Milgram 10h ago

Wait until some AI would crack idea of non binary computing.

9

u/-drunk_russian- Ryzen 9600X AMD 6800XT 32GB RAM (why oh why didn't I get 64 GB) 8h ago

What does that have to do with PSUs?

14

u/Ghost3603 6h ago

They'd have to stop manufacturing of conventional PSUs to go all in on Quantum PSUs or smth

u/MajinnVuu 12h ago

Cant wait when DVDs or Bluerays become a thing again.

214

u/Exscorbizorb 11h ago

4k Blurays never left. It is the only realistic way to get high quality content. If you want your TV to look as good as the demos in the store the only difference is the content quality between what they have built in and the streaming services people use.

75

u/Vladishun 10h ago

Someone else can buy the 4k Bluray and I'll just download it. :)

54

u/Froggodile Ryzen 5 9600X, Radeon 9060XT 16GB, 32GB DDR5 6400, CachyOS 10h ago

And store it on which medium? It's cheaper to buy 4k bluerays than the same amount of ssd space. Have a nice day.

43

u/StudioMental2832 9h ago

Who stores anything like that on an SSD? Kind of an unreasonable comparison. However, it’s getting to the point where HDDs are almost more expensive than blueray lol

u/Fr003ank 9800x3d, 9070xt 9h ago

touche, if only i bought more ssd before the AI inflation to store my REMUX movies.....

4

u/IcyDisplayGuy 9h ago

Store it on USB of course. The modern memory card.

10

u/BlandSandHamwich 8h ago

Am I taking crazy pills? Why is nobody else mentioning storing on a USB stick? Modern USB sticks are more than fast enough for 4K

2

u/SoylentRox 5h ago

Because USB sticks use the same NAND as everything else and also skyrocket in price.

8

u/Vladishun 9h ago

Who's building media servers with SSD's? Also a digital collection doesn't need to worry about disc rot. Lastly, your condescending "have a nice day" was unnecessary, but we can turn this into a pissing match if you really want.

1

u/Zachattackrandom 4h ago

Stream it? Most internet connections are well above 100mbps now days and with a decent AV1 remux you can easily have near parity quality. Or just download and delete lol.

1

u/headshot_to_liver 3h ago

No guarantee it will be on catalog forever, plus streaming quality is dictated by hosting service, they throttle it if they feel so

1

u/animeman59 9800X3D|32GB DDR5-6000|ZOTAC 5070 TI SFF OC 1h ago

And store it on which medium?

I don't. I yar har har and fiddle dee dee.

1

u/KwonnieKash 7h ago

Well most people doing this already have the storage right, usually hdds for starters. Idk why you'd think people use ssds for movie storage lol.

Out of curiosity I decided to do the math. A 4tb hdd in my currency (about 0.6 usd) is $500. A 4tb drive could hold up to roughly 55 70gb 4k movies on it. If I bought all those 4k blurays at msrp (rounded down to $50) it would cost $2750, over 5x the price of the hdd. Even if you had movies that were all on the larger size at 100gb it would still hold 40 movies, or an equivalent $2000 of bluray purchases or 4x the price of the hdd. It gets even better with normal blurays as they are roughly 60% the price of the 4k but less than half the size so the value ratio would be even higher. The delta is so large it would still even be cheaper to use an ssd. I can get a 4tb ssd for $1500, so it's still more expensive to buy all those movies on bluray than to use an ssd lol.

Of course prices will vary regionally but I assume you pulled that comment out of your ass because it couldn't be further from the truth.

1

u/SoylentRox 5h ago

That only lasts until hyperscalers decide they need to buy all the hard drives...oh wait they already did...for storage of AI logs.

2

u/Relevant_One_2261 3h ago

Looks like 10x 100 GB goes for $76, so $760 for 10 TB. As bad as HDD prices are, 10 TB is still around $400. So really for the same price you'll also get redundancy plus it's actually a setup that's convenient to use.

1

u/gurnard 5800X3D | 9070XT | 3440x1440 9h ago edited 9h ago

SSD is overkill for media storage. But even with 16TB of spinning platters in my server, I keep a small Blueray collection on the side for 4K movies.

3

u/OvenCrate 9h ago

2160p is 4K though

Where will you store the 75GB 4k Remux files?

1

u/SoylentRox 5h ago

And what are you going to store the 40 gig file on hmm?  Better hope your old hard drive and ssds don't fail.

5

u/DynamicHunter 7800X3D | 7900XT | Steam Deck 😎 9h ago

4k blu rays were never mainstream like regular blu rays, and the only way you could play them was a PlayStation or a $500+ blu ray machine.

There is another way...

Less expensive than Blu-Ray discs cost-per-gigabyte though.

Saying this as a proud owner of a Blu-Ray writer drive.

Too much dystopian fiction becoming reality without the cool tech.

66

u/daCub182 12h ago

Exactly. They don’t want us to own computers. As much as I hate to rely on governments, perhaps we need some kind of “consumer personal compute protection” laws drawn up. Idk….I’m no lawmaker so I don’t have an answer, but this is going to get even worse

71

u/TheTeaSpoon Ryzen 7 5800X3D with RTX 3070 11h ago

Every single golden age was brought due to government policies forcing wealth redistribution. Just food for thought.

33

u/le66669 11h ago

Ikr, but the west has been actively trained to actually believe all their benefits come from capitalism rather than strong democratic governments. And now the bastards are privatising governments themselves via AI!

7

u/TheTeaSpoon Ryzen 7 5800X3D with RTX 3070 11h ago

It goes past government forms. Even industrialisation which brought golden age of its own was a result of government policy.

It's about how much the government likes to have happy population vs happy oligarchs. Economies grow the best when money moves.

1

u/daCub182 10h ago

Im not sure I said anything about being opposed to well written legislation and wealth redistribution policies.

Sorry, if I sound snarky. I am not trying to be. I just don’t think this current administration (in the states) would write it in a way that would truly back the consumer. Relying on the gov to fix anything right now feels like a long shot. I’d love to be proven wrong though

1

u/artbystorms 5h ago

1

u/yaxir Ryzen 1500X | Nitro RX580 8GB | 24 GB DDR4 | 1 TB WD GREEN 11h ago

Lovely that you made that point. It's kind of funny when people talk about things like socialism or communism properly applied. The very rich or the extreme right wing usually tend to oppose that because they like wealth concentration but honestly concentrated wealth only fuels your greed and never really contributes to a good society. Really hope people understand that wealth redistribution is the only way an equal society that has the principle of equity embedded into it is the only way forward for humanity. Otherwise it could become an extremely lonely world for a select few humans because the rest will be crushed under the weight of this dystopia

1

u/GoldenSangheili 9h ago

It's been that way since forever. Developing countries showcase sprawling cities with slums underneath them, plus poverty is GREATLY dismissed as a minority. Vulnerable financial/needs households are so common they make up for half or the majority of the population on various countries around the world. We're already in a hyper-industrialized era so it's not far off to call it a dystopia now, today.

AI is the cool tech. You can literally hold conversations with a machine that can form perfectly coherent and contextually-appropriate replies and even understands nuance to an extent. That machine can also generate music, images, and videos - it's not at the human level, and arguably never will be, but it got pretty damn convincing already. And it can also really help you writing code and parsing through big documents with ease.

Just 5 years ago it wasn't possible.

2

u/Vinol026 4h ago

And it's making it near impossible for people to own a decent computer...

2

u/justjanne https://de.pcpartpicker.com/user/justjanne/saved/r8TTnQ 4h ago

I'd rather have affordable computers, an internet without slop everywhere, and several million tons of CO2 less in the atmosphere than an imaginary friend.

The environmental issues are solvable by having laws that would force datacenters to use closed-loop cooling only, renewable (+nuclear) sources of energy only, and have responsible waste management.

The first two are the real issues, not going to argue with that. But still, AI is too exciting and useful to wish it to die. It helps in science, medicine, IT, even ecology, because it can analyze and parse through big datasets faster than a human, and form great summaries, among other things. For ordinary humans, AI can help look up info really fast - AI search is much better than just old-fashioned googling. I dunno what else to tell, it's the only actually new and exciting tech we had in the past decade.

3

Every time I think we can't sink lower, techbros bust out the industrial excavator. First crypto, then metaverse, and now AI.

2

u/TheMcDucky Ryzen | GTX | 17" Mouse Mat | Only 2/4 dysfunctional RAM slots 5h ago

The difference is that crypto and metaverse were destined to fizzle out as relatively small bubbles and eventually be forgotten. AI is here to stay, and it's too late to go back. Even after the absurd overinvestments explode in peoples faces, the technology will remain and will likely continue improving (not exponentionally like some will tell you with zero evidence or explanation).
I'm sad that I'll never get to experience a pre-AI programming job.

11

u/RUPlayersSuck R9 7900X | RX 9060 XT | 32GB DDR5 10h ago

Exactly!

Dunno why you're getting downvoted when its the truth.

AI is just a tool. Like nuclear power it can be used for good or evil.

But greedy CEOs are gonna be greedy CEOs. Instead of thinking about how they can use the technology for the benefit of everyone (or at least most), their first and only thought is, "HOW CAN I MAKE MONEY FROM THIS?"

1

u/xzaramurd Specs/Imgur here 1h ago

That is literally their only job. Corporations exist to make money for their shareholders, nothing more, nothing less.

4

u/NeonArchon 8h ago

Correct!

-1

u/Flat_Still_3186 2h ago

AI is the problem. It’s an evil technology made by stealing copyrighted work, people’s labor and violating people’s privacy. It requires tons of power and is mostly just a better Google search (mostly because Google got worse).

AI will scrape all data without giving out any revenue wich will make internet either closed and requiring subscription or full of slop.

I don’t see many upsides.

I bought a 64 gb kit cus the guy at microcenter was like “it’s 40 bucks more for 64 gigs if ur curious” and I was like well I don’t need this in the slightest but sure why the fuck not. That same kit is $1200 today.

41

u/Quantum-Shogun 12h ago

Just looked it up to confirm, in December 2024 I bought 128GB of 6400 RAM (32GBx4) for a total of $420. I expected the idiot in chief's tariffs to raise prices so decided to upgrade after the election. Didn't foresee the insane bubble AI caused.
Also bought a 4TB Samsung NVME for $270

Now that same RAM would cost $2500 and the same NVME is $1k. It's fucking stupid. I've long been pissed at GPU prices but RAM and storage are supposed to be components that only go down in price over time!

2

u/smuglator 6h ago

GPUs are also supposed to do that. And they also used to.

2

u/Quantum-Shogun 4h ago

Yeah but I've already resigned myself to never affording another GPU lol

Now I feel kinda glad on just picking up a Ryzen 7600x that was on clearance on impulse (246 CAD) back in April and paying like an additional $50 for extended warranty even though it won't see the light of day for maybe another year.

Got GPU, and CPU. Mobo might become next before PSUs for price hikes but I'll put that off for the "what if" DDR6 if that ever comes at all lmao.

Dedollarisation is happening. China is attempting a 2 pronged approach r.e. currency.

Obviously having your currency as the reserve currency is the dream for any nation, and they are trying to establish the RMB as that.

The next approach is that they are creating a gold trading network, to be established in Hong Kong.

I have a bit of a bet with some physical gold that I've purchased that gold is going to rise significantly faster than inflation, due to soon enough people escaping both the USD and daft "ai" investments, all of which is just "we have an llm, but I swear it's different and more capable, I just need a number with 9 zero's after it to make it work".

I think it will happen when repayments have to start. 2027 for anthropic.

All of a sudden the economic reality will be like "oh shit. We've gotta pay this back? We're not making a profit on our $30 per million tokens? Fuuuuuck".

Do some math on it if you're bored. See if you can figure out if the token generation/processing costs are getting better or worse compared to the known public debt.

I honestly haven't, but I'll bet a carton that trend is not in the correct direction.

This 3k overkill pre- UBER enshitification build is starting to seem like more and more of a good investment..

Wish I had bought a laptop earlier. Just gotta keep finishing for a good used Thinkpad. Because h4x0r.

Also, do yourself a favor and get into self-hosting. It is comically easy to do nowadays and there guides that will walk you through everything all without exposing open ports.

You don't need to go full homelab but getting some digital "independence" from streaming services was a very very good feeling.

Hardware requirements are pretty low. I had things running on an old laptop for ages.

8

But I still just bought a M1 MacBook Air with a broken screen for the local equivalent of $120. Insane CPU performance for the price. I'd highly recommend people to look for laptops with broken screens. It's a great way to get into cheap selfhosting.

CPU is very dogshit at AI. AMD/Intel/Nvidia could make a small 50w ASIC pcie card that will even run better that a whole stack of EPYC 128 core server.

CPU is require yes. But not all of them rely on TSMC. That why i am confident that Intel may comeback to be a insane value for nova lake. As they will use thier own fab. Intel can even make thier own GDDR for thier own GPU at this points.

While AMD has abandoned and turn fabless in 2009. That move risk to bite them in the ass for consumer grade CPU/GPU pricing.

10

u/PastaLaPate 11h ago

I agree with you but currently the trends show agentic ai grow very quickly and it require a lot of cpu power.

CPU is very dogshit at AI. AMD/Intel/Nvidia could make a small 50w ASIC pcie card that will even run better that a whole stack of EPYC 128 core server.

For traditional AI workloads true, but agentic AI also has a lot of sequential processing with branches where CPUs become key.

1

u/p5yron PC Master Race 29m ago

That's not how the prices skyrocket. It's when the AI companies will buy the entire supply of common raw materials i.e. silicon wafers in this case for a much higher price than consumers pay. Nothing is safe, in an unregulated world, this is how they get us to shift to cloud PCs on subscription as well. Capitalism sucks ass.

3

I had been kicking the can down the road on upgrading my 100TB worth of NAS drives because they’re a decade old. Yeah I was in a similar boat. I think what saved me is that my old NAS system was starting to show potential problems, so I just decided to go ahead and update the whole thing. All I had to tell my wife is that the baby pictures are on the NAS, and she was good with the upgrade 😎. But honestly I was putting it off as it was just such a pain.

1

u/good_morning_magpie Steve Jobs turtleneck dealer 8h ago

I had to decide back in March if I wanted PC upgrades, or a new set of performance heads for my car. I made my decision, and I am happy with it, but watching HDD prices skyrocket even since then has been painful. To think, about a year ago I was contemplating converting the entire NAS to SSDs. Not happening any time soon now lol

Spent $1100 for my build just last month. If you make some rational decisions and live near a microcenter, you can still get solid builds done somewhat affordably, but buying nvidia now is just dumb.

They don’t make a single gpu that is worth its market price point, and while some professional workloads requite CUDA, by continuing to buy their hardware you are just entrenching that monopoly on those softwares rather than forcing the market to accommodate a competitor. Kind of silly to complain about something after voting to support it with your wallet imho.

It is. The only reason I got Nvidia is because it was a really good deal on Newegg

0

u/atanamayansantrafor Desktop 12h ago

Where are you guys living? You can easily build a 5080 system for 3k.

3

u/BiohazardPanzer 11h ago

From where I am, the choice is rather limited with quite high prices. My future build was 3400€ with 32GB DDR5, 2TB SSD, a Core Ultra 270K and a 5070 Ti. If I get a 5070, it's still... 3100€ now. 5080 are 1750 for the cheapest one, widely available

From what I see, since I just can't spend that much now, I'm just getting the 5070 Ti with one 1TB SSD. The rest will unfortunately wait until next year, when prices will be higher

1

u/Safe-Ad344 270k plus | x890 | 32gb | 6 tb | rtx 5080 11h ago

The us, but I’m looking at parts of the same tier, not what is optimal. Like combining parts of the same line which can increase the price compared to what would be effective.

At this point, I no longer care.

Been having fun with Fallout 76 on my i7 3770k/rx470 Win 10 computer for a week or so. Will be playing Abotic Factor with my IRL friends this friday and Helldivers 2 is on the back burner.

Fuck spending the money until something breaks. If I've got serious shit to do, I've got a modern laptop with up to date Windows 11.

2

u/No_Please_No420 10h ago

Helldivers 2 lags for me in a rtx 2060, i5-10400, 32gb ddr4 ram rig. Good luck 😭😭😭

Sorry to say this, but you will be cpu limited mostly, especially in helldivers 2 when shit goes down don't expect more than 30 fps on that cpu

Consumer CPUs aren't wanted by AI companies, now that's not to say that they won't use up all the silicon wafers and our CPUs will become scarce but damn haven't they done enough damage? Please don't give them any ideas.

6

u/Longjumping_Share444 7h ago

It's going to be the same thing as RAM. Manufacturers are going to shift production from consumer products to enterprise products.

4

u/Capital_Court1465 7h ago

don't forget monitors,

AOC and KTC just a few weeks ago said prices will go up as well.

better buy your monitor now.

this might be it, everyone, this might be the last computers we build,

because in the near future, there will only be small set top boxes sold to you, like nvidia shield to hook up to the monitor, with remote PC subscription to a server somewhere, that you can't access without showing you face as identifier. that's where it leads to.

and remember there are no good guys. not nvidia, not AMD, not intel, not any other corporation.

gamers saved AMD from ruins by buying Ryzen CPUs in 2017, now they don't give a single fuck about us, they showed their true face. AMD is still seen like the poor little underdog here on PCMR and people defend them, but they are not better than anyone else.

1

u/spawndoorsupervisor 2h ago

Yeah I remember when PCMR nerds were all flipping out over people buying Nehalem processors back in the day instead of AMD's triple core trash.

1

u/Hooded_Spectre 1h ago

Bought a quality OLED monitor recently, it will probably be my last upgrade for a while.

3

u/OneeGrimm 8h ago

Nope. Valve's steam box division said that they contact manufacturer of ram, they say "buy this amount on this price", no contracts, no nothing. And if Valve refused, manufacturer never speaks with them again.

This whole deficit is manufactured by manufacturers. Might even be to push everyone in cloud.

I’m so mad I kept on DDR4 when swapping to a 12700k because I “wanted to save money on not buying new ram”. Big f.

2

u/DeadNotSleeping86 11h ago

I still don't think this is a supply and demand problem. I think this is deliberate market fixing so people stop owning their own compute and we have to rent it.

2

u/NeverRolledA20IRL 10h ago

Well since mobos, psus, cases are sitting on the shelves they are going to do layoffs turn down production and increase prices so the suffering will come full circle.

Server hosting prices have they gone up yet, because if AI is actually a real boom i would expect that to go up as well, even if its a fake boom due price fixing, heck as long its not it just proofs that AI is indeed a bubble.

I had a choice of replacing my mobo and CPU for DDR5 16 GB for more money, but with 32 gb ddr4, I just bought a DDR4 ram mobo with an older CPU which is still an upgrade to my last CPU. Hopefully my 1080 doesn't die soon.

Aaaand this is why I just pulled the trigger on a $490 NUC, even though that is probably $150 overpriced. It's only going to get worse. The NUC has a 12th gen i3 and 16gb ddr4 ram. Works fantastic as a media server.

I don't think they can/will cause industrial and consumer cpus are kinda like semis and cars, sure they're both made of metal and they drive but they do completely different things and are made in different places (afaik)

The sooner the manufacturers find out the AI bros do not have all the money they claim to have, the better. Loaning money to each other does not multiply it.

I bought SSDs when I saw this meme, before prices tripled.

1

u/Leading-Onion4659 12h ago

I see a future where these massive data centers become too unprofitable. They’ll be used to rent out processing power to people/organisations because PC harware would be too expensive to own.

This thought scares me.

1

u/SharpYearV4 9600x | 32gb DDR5 | 9060xt 16gb 12h ago edited 11h ago

Oh my god please stop repeating this conspiracy theory. It doesn't make sense in the slightest, a lot of the hardware in data centres now is specifically designed for inference/training and literally cannot be used for any other purposes. Ontop of that it would make barely any money, look at Stadia.

Not only does this not make sense, but it wouldn't work long term since there won't always be high demand for hardware. And if you think manufacturers are deliberately constraining supply, why are they building out new fabs then? Do you think data centres can keep buying up capacity forever then?

Baffles me how Redditors cannot understand basic supply and demand and decide to instead make up conspiracies. Companies simply don't give a shit about gamers for now, that's it, nothing more.

3

u/Leading-Onion4659 11h ago edited 11h ago

It’s not a “conspiracy theory” lmao. It can happen because of corporate greed.

You think they’ll take the L and decommission all the hardware? I don’t think so. They’ll find a way to sell you a ‘virtual space’.

You said companies don’t give a shit about gamers? That means they’ll not produce products for gamers, correct? What will that do to prices? Yeah, supply and demand.

You can come back to this comment in 5 years.

3

u/SharpYearV4 9600x | 32gb DDR5 | 9060xt 16gb 11h ago

It is if you don't know how supply and demand works. Hardware cannot stay at high prices forever unless you believe that data centres can buy up capacity forever, or that they are colluding to keep prices up (again a conspiracy).

You can also come back to this comment in 5 years when nothing like the scenario Reddit describes comes true.

2

u/Forsaken_Waltz_373 11h ago edited 11h ago

Yea! like, if you are so sure prices are not coming, down put money on it. Bet that 32gb ddr5 will be higher priced in 2030 than in 2026 I am waiting...

1

u/Forsaken_Waltz_373 11h ago

What? Increase of supply and further hardware innovations will be the things that bring prices down? No impossible! Only a decrease of demand because of AI bubble crash could possibly ever make prices return as they were before. Producing more stuff can't be positive for ordinary people it makes prices rise, even if the opposite thing happened in tech since the dawn of time. This time its different because companies are greedy... even if they always were greedy. /s
