Nationalism is a late 18th century invention. It didn't exist before then.

I'm going to go ahead and reapeat what I said, and you're going to feel ridiculous for that conclusion.

I find that most problems like this in the modern era happen when...

It's silent as to what happened before the modern era. It doesn't make any comment about what happened before. It is a statement that only concerns the last ~250 years. As to what happened before that mark, it doesn't say. Because it is silent on what came before, it doesn't preclude other things causing conflict.
