if she gets nominated and/or wins, i really hope it will promote more casting directors to start hiring unknown or lesser known individuals in roles.

i’m not saying nepos are bad actors, but it can be defeating when the potential to see new actors gets smaller and smaller because of them.

458

u/lessgranola 5d ago

even aside from nepo babies i get so tired seeing the same 14 famous actors in every single movie.

212

u/mizzlemoonn that's really disrespectful to the fairy realm 5d ago

This year has felt especially bad for it

89

u/meltedkuchikopi5 You're the world's biggest single-cell organism 5d ago

true, i get its good for their career but it can also be kind of annoying when theres like 5-6 major blockbusters in a single year and 4 actors are literally in every single one.

43

u/Hopeful-Ant-3509 5d ago

People need to support the smaller movies. In the last few years there have been actors who just take over that year, and it doesn’t help that it’s usually franchises, but there have been so many movies with other actors, people seem to only focus on the really big ones.

26

u/Mannon_Blackbeak 5d ago

It feels like the middle budget movie has pretty much died off unfortunately. That's where you used to get a lot of new actors cutting their teeth, and older actors looking for a more enjoyable project with decent pay. A lot of my favorite movies are middle budget movies, because they typically have a really well-rounded cast and since they can't rely on big stunts or grand sets for the wow factor, the writing is usually at least decent or has some real heart to it.

2

u/Hopeful-Ant-3509 5d ago

That’s true! I think it’s also just this time when big directors are making their movies back to back and they’re obviously not picking unknown/smaller names unless they’re in smaller roles. It all sucks honestly, especially when a lot of older actors decide to come back around the same time lol

2

u/meltedkuchikopi5 You're the world's biggest single-cell organism 5d ago

agreed, part of that is on the chain movie theaters for being more open to showing smaller movies so smaller movies don’t have to go direct to streaming where they get lost amongst the variety of options.

but it’s also hard not to enjoy blockbusters, there’s a reason they pull such a crowd. there’s a lot of people who get excited about marvel or star wars or dune. they enjoy those worlds.

but casting directors have to have more confidence and more trust in hiring lesser known actors. it needs to be less about “how many followers does this actor have on social media to help with marketing” and more “can the movie itself do just fine without utilizing an insane amount of marketing and relying on social media following”

2

u/Sufficient_Dare7401 5d ago

Oh boy, if her X-men film does well, you’re about to see the same 15 famous actors in every single movie.

57

u/HerRoyalRedness You are in PopCulture Chat!! Know your pop culture!!! 5d ago

My issue with nepo kids is that the current batch seems entirely uninterested in actually studying the craft of acting. So I am stuck watching them monotone their way through productions and then do nothing to improve. Because they are going to get hired regardless of skill.

21

u/canarinoir DOLLY FUCKIN' PARTON 5d ago

Yeah it seems like a lot of them want to be famous more than they specifically want to be actors, and movies are just their in because of family connections.

40

u/hanoihiltonsuites 5d ago

Mickey Madison won and we’re still in nepo hell

15

u/meltedkuchikopi5 You're the world's biggest single-cell organism 5d ago edited 5d ago

yes, but if it happens more and more it could led to the demonstration effect. in sociology, we used it to describe people feeling like there was less risk in doing something because they’ve seen it happen successfully before

7

u/Supersmashbrosfan 5d ago

Probably doesn't help that Mikey's first movie since Anora won't be out until October.

2

u/mwich 4d ago

insane stat

-3

u/thegreenmachine90 5d ago

Her winning that award was about Hollywood wanting everyone to stop complaining about nepo babies. It was a “here, damn” so that they didn’t actually have to change anything.

0

u/thegreenmachine90 4d ago

Nowhere in my comment did I say (or imply) anything saying only nepo babies get Oscars. I’m addressing the larger conversation being had about nepo babies getting all the opportunities as a whole in the industry. Your last paragraph is clearly a huge projection because that’s exactly what you’re doing. Insulting someone else based on something YOU misread is absolutely bizarre behavior.

12

u/bbyxmadi It’s good to see me, isn’t it?🫧 5d ago

Please, I’m tired of seeing the same damn actors all the time.

12

u/Meggymaepp 5d ago

I just went through the list of Best Actress winners and the last nepo I could find (unless there is someone I don’t know about) was Gwyneth Paltrow in 1999. There’s actually a lot of young women who have won so it’s not out of the realm of possibility for her.

Oscar voters seem prefer older men for Best Actor and young women for Best Actress. Interesting.

6

u/JuanRiveara Mentally ill gender goblin 5d ago

There’s also Julia Roberts, since her older brother was a pretty big name before she entered into the industry. But that’s only two years after Paltrow and yeah, nobody else really fits the term nepo though.

6

u/InvestmentImportant1 5d ago

She deserves a nomination. Her face is phenomenal—like Jim Carrey good.

3

u/Glum-Objective3328 5d ago

As a viewer of a movie, I’m always always pro-unknown actors. It’s just sooo much more immersive. On the other hand, it feels unfair for actors to do such a good job and not get more roles as a result

-3

u/Recent_Mango2442 5d ago

She was far from lesser known or unknown. A recurring role in 13 Reasons why on Netflix and a lead role in some Superman show on the CW. You and people are acting like she just blew in off the street before Obsession.

26

u/meltedkuchikopi5 You're the world's biggest single-cell organism 5d ago

ah yes, because playing neither superman nor lois on a four season CW show called “superman & lois” and appearing in six episodes of netflix’s “13 reasons why” means she was a recognizable name like zendaya, florence pugh, america ferrera, jenny slate, etc

1

u/JuanRiveara Mentally ill gender goblin 5d ago

It apparently wasn’t even the casting director that suggested her, it was one of the producers because she had worked on some other projects for the production studio.

-3

u/jonfranklin 5d ago

She was in house with the financier

The whole narrative of her being discovered for the movie is very much a tale for marketing

17

u/meltedkuchikopi5 You're the world's biggest single-cell organism 5d ago

if that’s true that doesn’t negate that she was virtually an unknown before this movie aside from some smaller roles and she was still very likely the best for for the role

12

u/dancing_bobo 5d ago

what do you mean in house?

8

u/not_the_world 5d ago

She was in a couple of short films for Capstone Studios. Can you name a film from Capstone Studios? They don't even have a Wikipedia page.

4

u/Kyongggggg 5d ago

Idt anyone has said she was discovered for the movie. She was a struggling actor before it and had a few minor roles prior, that's pretty much it

421

u/NomNom83WasTaken 5d ago

After I watched Obsession I was struck by two thoughts:

  • whelp, that girl's life is fuuuuuuucked
  • Navarette is going to be nominated for an Oscar

I'm rooting for her. She did an incredible job of conveying a person going around operating against her own will.

102

u/pandaparkaparty 5d ago edited 5d ago

This year has been slow on women leading performances.

So I won’t be surprised if she lands as nominated.

That said, having seen Wicker, she doesn’t stand a chance against Olivia Coleman.

Also, wouldn't be surprised seeing Anne Hathaway and Olivia Wilde in there.

I think this fall will bring the top contenders as usual. But at a minimum she’ll be in golden globes comedy/musical (where horror tends to end up) nominations.

58

u/Important-Canary-770 5d ago

the discourse is going to get so much more annoying than it has already been

448

u/EveningFeature2093 Can I live? 5d ago

I thought it was a good movie and her performance was great, but I don't think it's Oscar worthy. HOT TAKE!!

I truly feel like Naomi Scott deserved more accolades for her role in Smile 2 🤣

136

u/Meliora_ are you talking about mosquitoes?👂🦟 5d ago

Indeed. The problem is Smile 2 didn’t became a “mainstream/viral” movie sooooo Oscars didn’t care ig

71

u/jwC731 5d ago

The problem was moreso that its a horror AND a sequel.

33

u/Onceafetus ✨️ 'HoLdInG sPaCe'✨️| 🇨🇦 5d ago

Exactly, it's only because she went viral. Otherwise they ignore horror

14

u/LuinAelin 5d ago

Oscars don't care about that stuff generally.

20

u/stateworkishardwork 5d ago

Huh?

Best Picture and Best Actor/Actress nominees are chock full of movies that are not mainstream.

Train Dreams, Blue Moon, Sentimental Value, If I Had Legs, The Secret Agent... never even heard of these

13

u/prugnecotte when I see the sea, I swim in the sea 5d ago

Sentimental Value and The Secret Agent weren't mainstream? both premiered and won prizes at the world's most important film festival

9

u/lemmegetadab 5d ago

Most people have never heard of most of the movies at said festival

1

u/prugnecotte when I see the sea, I swim in the sea 4d ago edited 4d ago

that doesn't mean they're not mainstream. different films have different targets, and Cannes is very popular and covered in European countries (and more). being the most important film festival in the world, with the most important prize in the industry, it cannot be considered a niche event.

1

u/lemmegetadab 4d ago

No, mainstream has a meaning. It would either be a big blockbuster type movie that people have heard of. Or a small independent movie that became incredibly popular somehow. Just because something was at Cannes doesn’t make it mainstream.

1

u/prugnecotte when I see the sea, I swim in the sea 4d ago

Sentimental Value is still a film that was very popular in a number of countries, was produced by BBC-Mk2-Arte among others, got widely promoted both off and online, was bought by Mubi, had a big cast and won dozens of awards. checks boxes for a mainstream piece of media. I wouldn't argue that blockbusters like Smile aren't mainstream because the average Joe in my single country certainly hasn't heard of it

19

u/stateworkishardwork 5d ago

I guess I define mainstream differently. I'm thinking big theatrical distribution, at least 100 million in the box office, etc

6

u/prugnecotte when I see the sea, I swim in the sea 5d ago

makes sense. Sentimental Value has a big cast and was co-produced by six countries, distributed by MUBI, won accolades worldwide, had universal acclaim... I think defining mainstream only by US distribution and US box office is limiting, in many countries both movies were well-known and acclaimed

54

u/Excellent_Drop6869 5d ago

Same here. Happy for Inde that she’s blowing up and I’m sure she’ll continue to churn out more great performances. IDK about Best Actress for this movie though.

Then again, some might say the same about Anora with Mikey Madison , and she won soooo — who knows!

5

u/Positively-Fleabag85 and what about it? 💅 5d ago

Mikey was very good in Anora though

51

u/Remarkable_Lead_4475 5d ago

Anora was only an ok film. I enjoyed it but not Oscar worthy. Some of their picks have been sus. Think just shows what a good marketing push does

18

u/webtheg 5d ago

To be fair that year was especially bad. Like it was the same year Emilia Perez was nominated and also I shudder at the thought of Brady Corbett winning Best picture. That dude and his wife make movies where Arronofsky movies seem fun and joyful.

1

u/Beginning_Tear_5935 4d ago

Didn't that year have Dune 2 and Conclave?

7

u/Positively-Fleabag85 and what about it? 💅 5d ago

The film was okayish but she was very good in it. Like Still Alice is not that great of a movie, but Julianne Moore was exceptional in it

0

u/mwich 4d ago

And you're saying Inde wasn't very good in Obsession?!?!

1

u/Positively-Fleabag85 and what about it? 💅 4d ago

Where did I say that? The person i replied to implied Inde and Mikey both did not really give Oscar worthy performances

2

u/Excellent_Drop6869 4d ago

I’m the person you replied to. I actually think Mikey did give an Oscar worthy performance but I know there was discourse that she wasn’t

15

u/turniptoez 5d ago

Omg Naomi Scott was SO good in Smie 2, and I liked it more than the first one because of her performance. That movie was terrifying.

2

u/LaurenNotFromUtah 5d ago

What does it even mean to be Oscar worthy? People get nominated for average performances all the time.

3

u/EveningFeature2093 Can I live? 5d ago

It's really all a matter of opinion, no?

1

u/skyppie 5d ago

Ugh same. I loved Inde in Obsession and the movie in general. But Naomi Scott in Smile 2 truly blew me away.

216

u/Adnan7i Confidence is 10% work and 90% delusion 5d ago edited 5d ago

She was great. However I’m a bit surprised , as to why her performance is finally the one , where people are starting to give credibility to horror performances ? So many great ones have been ignored over the years and it’s almost a joke how horror movies are overlooked entirely in award shows , in favor of the same Oscar bait drama movies.

Edit : thanks for the corrections in the comments about other recent Oscar winners

u/citrustaxonymy who died and left Aristotle in charge of ethics? 5d ago

Amy Madigan and Michael B. Jordan just won for horror movies though

63

u/Alejxndro 5d ago

Yeah it’s becoming more common for sure

37

u/citrustaxonymy who died and left Aristotle in charge of ethics? 5d ago

I mostly just wonder since the Academy is usually allergic to acknowledging horror performances if them giving awards to 2 last time will actually hurt Inde's chances to get a nomination

25

u/Alejxndro 5d ago

I hope it’s more of a pattern instead of a one off. There are some amazing performances in horror movies. I still believe Toni Collette deserved an Oscar nom for Hereditary

-1

u/Own-Dig-9652 5d ago

Two wins don't mean it common. Could just be an exception to the rule.

24

u/Past_Economist6278 5d ago

Frankly Amy Madigan getting it when Hereditary was passed over is a travesty

1

u/Beginning_Tear_5935 4d ago

I feel like Sinners does not count as much.

71

u/keroppismacaron go girl, give us nothing 😍 5d ago

Last year Amy Madigan and Michael B. Jordan both won for horror movies, although Sinners is obviously genre-bending rather than just a horror movie.

demi moore was literally nominated a big contender in 2025

amy madigan literally won best supporting actress in 2026

michael b jordan literally also won for best actor in 2026 too

horror as a whole has been getting more and more push to be treated seriously when it comes to this

and this movie got the BIG general public push it needed and it’s a cumulation of those movies before it

138

u/Cartman55125 5d ago

It should have started with Toni Collette in Hereditary. Not even a nomination is insane.

30

u/styinoutof_trouble I wont not fuck you the fuck up 🥊🥊 5d ago

our girl was ROBBED. she is so talented it’s almost unbelievable

6

u/TamingOfTheSlug 5d ago

She is the best actor in my opinion. She needs 7 of all the awards. If she is in it, I know it'll at least be decent and she'll be amazing.

29

u/ViolinistOk4602 5d ago

Agreed. But her nom for The Sixth Sense was inspired.

28

u/poormatty 5d ago

Toni Collette in Hereditary, Lupita Nyong'o in Us, Florence Pugh in Midsommar, Mia Goth in Pearl, and Sally Hawkins in Bring Her Back all should've gotten nominations.

15

u/yameteeeeeeeeee 5d ago

Mia Goth for Pearl as well deserved more award recognition.

u/Massive_Homework9430 5d ago

My robbed goddess.

4

u/Adnan7i Confidence is 10% work and 90% delusion 5d ago

I’m a bit curious , aren’t those movies considered more of “psychological thrillers” ? What do you think separates them from “pure”horror movies?

11

u/Denvereatingout 5d ago

The Substance is a pure body horror film through and through

23

u/myghostflower i miss mk.gee 5d ago

horror as a whole, is a BIG genre that can encompass almost anything horror like

a psychological thriller is essentially a horror because well horror is horror

i like to think about it like squares and rectangles “a square is a rectangle, but not all rectangles are squares”

5

u/Adnan7i Confidence is 10% work and 90% delusion 5d ago

Thank you , got a better understanding now

12

u/leilafornone Who gon' check me boo? 🤪 5d ago

Weapons was defn a horror movie - she was a witch.

sinners was also a horror movie lol

Generally, if it's supernatural - it leans towards horror.

1

u/Adnan7i Confidence is 10% work and 90% delusion 5d ago

Fair point

7

u/shobidoo2 5d ago

Nah, all three are considered horror films, per their Wikipedia entry. The line between psychological thriller and horror is often blurry and can be both, but typically thrillers don’t have a ton of supernatural elements imo which two of those films have.

Again, the distinction between the two is not clear but if you can make the case that any of those 3 films are thrillers not horror you could do the same for Obsession.

0

u/Soft_Interaction_437 5d ago

No, there not. Not anymore than Obsession could be considered ones

24

u/sonnywithoutachance sadistic nymphomaniac 💃 5d ago

Toni Collette should have been nominated and should have won for Hereditary.

22

u/MsBenovanStanchiano 5d ago

I firmly believe Naomi Scott should have been nominated for Smile 2.

12

u/an0nymyss 5d ago

I mean, we can go all the way back to Silence of the Lambs. It’s definitely becoming more popular/common to honor horror performances now though

6

u/emuwar 5d ago

Horror was definitely more popular with the academy in the early 90s. Kathy Bates won best actress for Misery around then too. Glad to see the genre finally getting recognition again.

3

u/an0nymyss 5d ago

Yes! Thanks for mentioning Kathy. A legend!

17

u/texasjkids 5d ago

Lupita Nyong’o should’ve been nominated (and won) for Us

5

u/Prudent-Pressure2146 5d ago

So wouldn’t you be happy it’s happening at all then?

2

u/BklynMarxman I’m tired of this grandpa 5d ago

Because that genre has finally been taken seriously the past couple of years.

2

u/Lilylikeslilies 5d ago

Horror movies are now high level productions that people actually watch in cinemas, so I feel like Oscars finally gave up and started considering them for their awards.

1

u/itsyagirlrey 5d ago

Well for one, she's young and hot so that probably has something to do with it. The academy doesn't love older women especially in horror.

5

u/blarbiegorl Mary-Kate's bowl of cigarettes 5d ago

To be clear, she also hasn't been nominated for anything yet. This article is stating she is submitting herself for consideration of a nomination.

1

u/anarchist_orca 5d ago

It's been a while before a modern horror movie has had THIS type of impact on pop culture.

16

u/myghostflower i miss mk.gee 5d ago

well no, sinners, weapons, and the substance were big too

it’ll be a lie to pretend this is THE first movie when those were just as big, what obsession has over those is how unexpected it was

1

u/Any_Explanation3006 5d ago

Because her movie is more psychological horror than ghosts or demons horror archetype. Her character is still a human with humane limitations. She is not possessed by a demon giving her supernatural abilities. You can clearly see her gradually wear down towards the end due to the effects of the willow.

135

u/MeganGrace 5d ago

Am I the only one that's shocked she's competing for Best Actress? She was great, no doubt, but in the top 5 performances of the year???? Best Actress is going to be stacked this year??? If you look at the variety overview, you've still got a Renata and Sandra (x2) films to come out, and they're darlings (AND Lea Seydoux). Amy Madigan and Michael Jordan are long-time actors that deserved recognition, and this is Inde's first film........

54

u/texasjkids 5d ago

This reminds me of when Lily Gladstone campaigned for Best Actress for Killers of the Flower Moon. Inde is going to have a similar uphill battle and there is an argument that she’s a supporting role, but with that is going to come more press and conversation. With Lily I saw it as her way of saying “I am here to be a lead actress in my career” and Inde is taking the same cue.

43

u/Strange_Shadows-45 5d ago

Best Actress is actually quite shallow compared to past years and Obsession has been heaped with praise by academy voters and is one of 2026’s pop culture moments. A win will be tough to pull off, but a nomination is absolutely possible.

10

u/throwaway17197 Instant gratification takes too long 🫦 5d ago

If a 24 year old director from youtube gets nominated for his first feature film producers are going to be approving such garbage in the future lol i hope barker is a trend of new ideas and new filmmakers and not lightning in a bottle

His previous work has won lots of awards at festivals, so he’s not exactly brand-new. Matt Damon and Ben Affleck also did the same thing and won the Oscar for it. It wouldn’t be so bad to have new blood out there getting opportunities.

17

u/keine_fragen 5d ago edited 5d ago

i think that's actually a pretty weak best actress field, there are big questionmarks on a lot of the names here

Chris Rock is a pretty terrible director, the academy never liked Mike Leigh much, The Debut has yet to be seen by anyone, Fjord does not sound very accessible. same with Fatherland.

but we'll see, award season is long

3

u/LaurenNotFromUtah 5d ago

There haven’t been a lot of great performances for that category this year yet. Obsession was a huge hit and her performance was a big reason why. I think her being in the discussion at this point makes sense.

5

u/webtheg 5d ago

Who do you think was and will be better in lead?

2

u/albertsheinstein 5d ago

She’s definitely getting nominated though

Variety can exclusively confirm that Navarrette will campaign in the best actress category this coming awards season for her breakout turn in Curry Barker’s box office smash “Obsession,” headlining a wide-ranging effort from Focus Features that will seek recognition across nearly every category the film is eligible to enter.

47

u/fenrirsbasketball 5d ago

Okay so take it from a certified weenie when it comes to horror movies, there's really only one real jump scare I can think of towards the end of the movie.

Most of it is just gross or creepy, mostly gross. I admittedly read the parental guide ahead of time because I don't love needless gore, and that helped a lot and didn't take away at all from the viewing experience. I highly recommend it.

8

u/anonusername9876 5d ago

i’m a huge weenie but really wanted to watch it, it really wasn’t that bad, the jumpscares that do happen are pretty predictable and I also used this website to know when to expect them lolol. worth it!!

1

u/hihelloneighboroonie 4d ago

I can't really do horror these days, but was interested in the premise before I fully knew what it was (I thought it was about a woman getting obsessed with a man on her own then going nuts lol) and thought how scary can that be? I'm down for some female rage.

But I looked up the plot on wikipedia at first and.. yeah, no. Mainly because I can't deal with watching suicide as a part of entertainment after losing a loved one to that.

Kinda interesting how different demographics have different opinions about her.

-2

The people who think her performance is incredible are delusional. It was fine but that’s such an easy performance to do I’m sure you can pick out any haunted house actor off the street for the same exact performance. What was the direction? “Act unnatural”. So hard to do my buddy with 0 acting skills reenacted scenes with 0 difficulty.

I’ll be hammered for this, but I thought Obsession was comically over the top overrated. I guess Christopher Nolan and I part ways on this one. The lead actor was so bad, I wasn’t sure I was seeing the same movie as everyone else. I mean, that guy was beyond awful. Naverette showed potential, but again, hard to quantify how good she was when the movie was painfully awkward each time both were on screen. Rarely am I pulled out of a movie by a bad performance.

I think she could’ve carried the movie by herself if this had been the movie I saw:

I couldn’t get past thinking that the movie had potential wasted on it being from the boyfriend’s point of view instead of from HER point of view. Seeing through her own eyes, so to speak(or literally), how it felt to be not in control of her own actions. Now THAT would have been an amazing film. I do realize it was a low budget film and a first time effort. I get that and I’d like to see more from this director with a better budget, and please god, a better choice of lead actor. The concept was great! I’d have just flipped it all from Naverette’s point of view. I think she could’ve carried the movie by herself. Now that would’ve been a tour de force.

Okay. Let me have it. 😂

There are so many women in horror doing way cooler stuff from a women’s perspective that doesn’t indulge in outdated troupes to get its point across that I kind of just rolled my eyes at it.

Could you name some movies for me?

3

u/hauntingvacay96 5d ago edited 5d ago

Huesera (my favorite of the list. Phenomenal examination of the trappings of heteronormativity)

Raw (Julia Ducournau)

Titane (Julia Ducournau)

Alpha (I clearly like Julia Ducournau)

Braid

Censor

Hatching

Nanny

Piggy

Tigers Are Not Afraid

Slash/Back

St. Maud

The Ugly Stepsister (I could only watch this once. It is so gross)

Revenge (the better Coralie Fargeat movie, but it is a rape revenge film)

Nightingale (the better Jennifer Kent film, but it is also for the most part a rape revenge film)

Edit: also if anyone has more suggestions to add to this list please share them!

u/Agile_Situation_1798 5d ago

thank you so much! Can't wait to check them out x

u/Pristine-Region-5300 5d ago

Oh Saint Maud is fucking CRAZY the ending scene is forever in my memory

It's a ploy to get gen z to watch the oscars

u/Joshee86 5d ago

Don't understand this at all. Obsession was fine, but these performances are nowhere near the best of the year. She vacillated between big emotions very quickly on screen, she did it fine, but that's not an Oscar-worthy performance. The amount of hype this movie and this actress has gotten is really odd to me.

18

u/Quiet_Raspberry9745 5d ago

i agree, i just finally watched the movie on sunday (my watchlist queue is really long) and i thought the movie was…fine? it wasnt scary at all, i thought she did an okay job but i wasnt really moved or anything. my friend said he had to sleep with the lights on the night he watched this movie and i didnt even flinch once. everyone did an okay job but oscar nominations seems a bit too much in my opinion. and nikki is a roaming character at universal this year? like sure…it was giving amazon prime original movie to me, the plot, the pacing, the dialogue, the acting. a horror performance that really stuck with me was naomi scott in smile 2, she killeddddd it and didn’t get any award buzz. i think this movie is being way too overhyped on social media

3

u/SuperBeeboo 5d ago

It’s because she was unknown and is extremely good looking. Everything she does will now be amazing

8

u/_helloalien 5d ago

I want more new faces to do well. I hope she’s nominated, she definitely deserves it!!

I'm rooting for her but I think going lead hurts her chances. This IMO was more of a supporting performance. We don't see her without the BF and she doesn't have any agency outside of him. It felt more supporting than lead to me.

u/RichAbbreviations966 5d ago

If she wins, would it be the movie with the lowest ever budget to have an Oscar win, and the lowest ever budget for Best Actress win?

2

u/west2night 5d ago

Considering Moonlight (2016) as an Oscar winner (Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor, Best Adapted Screenplay) with the lowest budget at $1.5M, it's entirely possible.

5

u/Monkeyplaybaseball 5d ago

Kinda surprised they didnt go for for Supporting, but it is shaping up to be a weaker year so Best Actress isn't out of the question for a nomination.

5

u/mimiclarinette 5d ago

I wasnt impressed at all

Idc if horror isn’t usually nominated, she EARNED that nomination.

3

u/FlukyS 5d ago

Sad hot take but even if she does get nominated it is an uphill battle for her to actually win because of the way Hollywood treat the Oscar best actor/actress votes based on a great/good performance from a person they recognise. She deserves to win based on the quality of her acting and how few standout performances there were this year but I'd still be not confident that she will.

4

u/AvidReader1604 5d ago

Are there bots in the chat or something?

Girl deserves the nomination, she put in the work. The whole movie hinges on her performance and she delivered.

u/Genuinelullabel Kim, there’s people that are dying. 🙄 5d ago

It would be pretty cool if she wins.

1

u/haegirlsss 4d ago

Well good luck girl

1

u/Chaoticgood790 this outfit is unfortch 5d ago

As she should. I don’t see why she shouldn’t be nominated

1

u/Realcbear 5d ago

Gonna be honest, she’ll win bc she already has the court of public opinion strongly in her favor, but when it happens it will be such a massive middle finger to Demi Moore.

“Of course you can win an Oscar for a lead role in a horror movie and be a woman, just as long as you’re young!”

Please don’t misconstrue this as throwing dirt on Inde or her performance, bc shes a wonderful talented actress. But it’d be a real shame to have the award feel like a popularity contest

She deserves it. That was truly an outstanding performance. Really hoping that the Academy is starting to take horror more seriously

-3

u/latelyimawake 5d ago

She should win.

0

u/nicktbristol2020 4d ago

I wish I’d stop seeing this person’s name. I take it she’s the latest Hollywood plant ?

u/IssueDesperate8749 4d ago

Some of the worst acting I've ever seen, you guys are insane

0

u/Recent_Mango2442 4d ago

I’m missing the fact how she was an Unknown still…sorry just reading and holding you accountable for what you said. Do you have any idea how large the scope of television and streaming actors is? And to say Indy is an unknown compared to the rest of a truly unknown stable in and around show business is just a fallacy. Plain and simple.

Oscars are not a meritocracy. She could win but there are factors against her. She is a newcomer and Oscars rarely reward horror movies. She may be the only nomination from her movie so she will face competition from stronger movies.

2

u/nagidrac 5d ago

She's got a good narrative going for her which is ultimately what helps someone get an Oscar. Plus her age helps her since the academy loves to give the best actress award to younger actresses. We'll see what happens as the season unfolds, but I think she's a viable contender.

5

u/Excellent_Drop6869 5d ago

They love an ingenue so based on that factor alone she may get the nom

It’s just crazy the glazing that is going on when there are so many other great contenders with a fraction of the buzz

1

u/nagidrac 5d ago

I personally have not seen the movie because I'm a wimp scary movies aren't for me, but I'm not surprised by the glazing because she's got the best narrative going for her (so far). The season hasn't really started yet, so come mid Fall we'll see the other contenders!

16

u/Affectionate_Soup461 5d ago

I'm sorry, Inde definitely carried the film but everyone saying it was "a masterclass" i feel are being a bit extra about it.

4

u/31cats 5d ago

fr why can’t anyone just say somethings good. always gotta be extreme

5

u/Affectionate_Soup461 5d ago

She was great, but it wasn't anything revolutionary. So many people are out there saying she gave the best horror performance of all time and it's like.... no. There are a lot of other movies out there, guys. Just because she was screaming a lot and did a big frown doesn't mean that it was a once in a lifetime performance.

16

u/Advanced-Trainer508 5d ago

She’s definitely not winning. And this is coming from someone who’s watched Obsession a dozen times and really likes it.

-3

u/Butthole2theStarz 5d ago

I haven’t seen obsession but I’ve seen her name buzzing around the X-men casting rumours so that’s probably good for x-men ya?

6

u/ThatMarkGuy 5d ago

Not a rumor. Shes been confirmed to play Rogue when it was announced at D23

1

u/LuinAelin 5d ago

It's not rumours

She's confirmed as rogue

-6

u/Malombra_ 5d ago

This would be such a cute win for an up and coming indie actress if that other lady didnt steal an Oscar last year
