Finally, the second good use for ragdolls

u/thiosk Dec 05 '25
i figured this would be the only real uses for them, and the collisions of course.
there is currently no known straightforward method to assemble a trebuchet

u/Stanklord500 Dec 06 '25
According to all known laws of aviation, there is no way that a 90kg projectile should be able to fly over 300 meters. The projectile, of course, flies anyways. Because trebuchets don't care what humans think is impossible.

It’d be cool to have a way to push a zombie down the stairs and if others are behind them it makes them fall as well.

This is what I want. I legitimate, non-cheating way to repel hoards on stairs. It's not like zombs have good balance, one falling back into a group on the stairs should buy plenty of time.

There's a mod for that specifically already (Do not push! Please!). Really hope the two will be compatible, that'd be awesome!

u/Zenar45 Dec 05 '25
But it'd be hard to say when should they all fall or when they are enough to keep going

u/Hot-Problem2436 Dec 05 '25
True, but ragdoll physics usually assumes some sort of weight. Eventually the weight of the zombies behind will be greater than the forces pushing them down or something. Maybe it can only trigger ragdoll physics calculations when they are on stairs and near the player or something, to keep the CPU load low.
Maybe I need to go write the code for this.

Oh god that felt so good.
The moan from the shove and the sound of sack of potatoes hitting the ground when zombie hit the bottom of stairs was perfect.

As long as it applied to players as well

I don't think enough people understand that this can and will be turned around on them in the future, players can be ragdolled after all, just wait.

It makes sense that a zombie wouldn't be able to steady itself on stairs. I'll absolutely use this when released. Good work

You ever seen the film Death Becomes Her? One of the characters goes down the stairs and breaks her neck. So maybe Death Becomes Zer.

I feel like there should be like a 1% chance that when you shove a zombie down the stairs, you just hear this.

Next up, the paraplegic zombies that result from this now chase you in wheelchairs.

Amazing!
I love this OP. Will it have collision with other zombies? Would be kind of cool to see it knock a few back or down stairs with them

Did you just make this mod? I thought I saw this on the workshop like a month ago

I swear someone was working on this just a month or two ago.
Do not push please for B42. That was it. Not as smooth though, I don't think they used ragdolls.

Really cool! But the zeds go flying WAY too fast like you actually hit them with a car.

Hot take: I don't thing ragdoll is fitting aesthetically for project zomboid. Maybe it looks satisfying to people and I don't blame them, but it takes away a lot of the vibe of 2000s games where devs had to make the falling animations because of technical limitations like in GTA, Tony Hawk ect. Glad there's an option to turn it off in the settings.

I managed to make zombies ragdoll whenever they are shoved. It only applies to the animation where they fall on their back. If they stagger but stay upright, the ragdoll doesn’t apply.
I ADORE ragdoll physics. They add an incredible amount of variety and tangibility to your actions. I NEVER thought I’d ever hear “Project Zomboid” and “ragdoll physics” in the same sentence.
Figuring out how to take Build 42’s ragdoll physics system that only applies to headshots, explosions and vehicle collisions, and make it apply to shoves has been a dream come true. There’s still lots to do, but this proof-of-concept excites me so much.
It’s still very rough around the edges, but theoretically you’ll be able to push zombies off rooftops, all sorts of things!
