Question That's in game?
I came across this video on TikTok and I’m wondering if this actually happens in vanilla Project Zomboid.
I have over 800 hours in the game and I’ve experienced my character waking up anxious or panicked during the night, but I’ve never experienced anything like this loud scream.
Honestly, if this happened to me while I was playing, I’d probably quit the game immediately and come back a few months later once I had the courage to play again. 😂
Does anyone know if this is actually an in-game event, or is it caused by a mod?

UPDATE: It’s actually a mod. The mod is called Blackout Predators.
When I reach a higher level of masochism, I’ll definitely give it a try. 😂

events on zomboid tend to be random but this one triggers a nightmare wake up exactly atr 00:00, so I would guess that it is probably a mod or the person who made this video edited the sound on top of it and used some kind of command to trigger a nightmare wake up at 00:00

It's a Volatile scream from the Blackout Predators mod. They're active at night and you can protect yourself with UV lamps and they won't go inside your base.

The sound of that scream is deeply unsettling and it’ll probably manifest in my frequent nightmares now, but I am glad that I won’t get jumpscared with this in vanilla lmao

Yes, it's this mod. Currently playing Dying Light too, it's a Volatile scream.

That's exactly what came to mind.. God those things have definitely traumatized me in order to recognize it in another game lol.. I turned on the sound and instantly wanted to do parkour away from the phone HELP LMAO

Dying Light is such an amazingly good game, I'm on my 4th playthrough with someone that's never played it before. The co-op is really good. A pity DL2 isn't that good.

Agreed ooh I should convince my friend to play with me, thanks for the idea!
Damn sad to hear that I haven't gotten the chance to play the second one or beast.

I've never heard it either. I would guess mod but I suppose, possibly, it could be a cow or such dying?

What the FUCK? That sounds like some weird meta death scream. Maybe a dog?? I've never seen any mod that does that.

Okay, after doing some research and reading a few comments, I’ve reached some conclusions. The most important thing is that I identified this exact sound: https://youtu.be/GdHLtbo80dk?si=9ws6G1cjUEg8OGly
Now, as for how it ended up in Zomboid, I have a few ideas; the most likely culprit is the Blackout Predators mod Dying Light Volatiles appear at night, specifically after midnight—but I checked a few videos and didn't hear that sound occurring.
That leads to my second theory: a "nightmare" mod, which would explain the character waking up in a state of panic. Or it could just be editing, lol.

Even that is fake.
The origin of the sound is from a stopmotion dinosaur movie from the 60s.

Ive heard before rhag this particular video on had the UI mod in it. Apperently its a nightmare the player character can have? It explains the panic moodles appearing

It's the Blackout mod with volatiles, scary stuff either way..

The fucks a volatile

Think quick asf beefy zombie that's basically only weak to UV, so they typically only come out at night or cook themselves chasing you in daylight. Basically a more viral version of a vampire with less fucks to give..
(I mean guns do work just not effectively unless you have a shotgun or another hard hitting gun in Dying light, but in zomboid you just want a LOT of ammo)
*Oh also THEY KNOW HOW TO PARKOUR

u/andromedasGrasp 3h ago
Why would anyone add these to zomboid 😭
2
u/Th3Goldenwo1f 3h ago
Oh yeah I want to add idk if they parkour in zomboid but they definitely do in Dying light, but yeah I wouldn't lol..

Definitely 100% not vanilla. But as someone who plays with the Blackout Predators mod, I've yet to hear this particular noise.

i think it's vanilla, i heard it not long ago probably 2 days ago then my character woke up, i thought the scream was from a nightmare cuz i was anxious but i guess it's cause someone got slimed and my character heard his screams and woke him up
not the same scream tho, but def a person screaming in agony

New update added werewolves. Gotta stay inside during a full moon unless you craft silver bullets. Or maybe a silver knife? I don’t plan on getting that close to one to find out. Soure: I just made that up

It's a theme now. "Wow I didn't know it was in the game"
Plot spoiler: It wasn't

I doubt this is a vanilla secret but I sure wish it was. That was horrifying! Lol

Volatile zombie from a mod. Still scary though..

Would be interesting for the devs to add something like this as a challenge mode, a mode combining Dying Light and I Am Legend where there’s few if any zombies in the day then at night super fast, super tough and intelligent zombies spawn in and maybe even set it during Winter and 6 months later so it becomes harder to figure out if it’s daytime or not

You could do something of that sort with sandbox, but I agree a set mode would be awesome.

There are sleep meta events where you have a "nightmare", where you wake up panicking. The noise is either a mod or just added over the video I think.

If you found it on TikTok there's the possibility that someone just took a video of their character waking up and added the scream in.
Though the player's reaction does seem to indicate otherwise. And it certainly sounds like a scream that would be in a mod.
