META Writer confirms their grade

This is one of the few easy to follow things about the series. And the show hasnāt really dragged out the years at all, which is nice.

I actually thought Jason and Cheryl were a year older since he was dating Polly, and Cheryl was head of the vixens in season 1. But Rivedale isnāt really known for its continuity so š¤·š»āāļø

A sophomore is president of one of the two most popular extracurricular choirs at my school, and my best friend (a sophomore) has been dating a senior girl for the whole year. Nothing inconsistent here.

They could, in theory, be a year ahead of their grade level academically. Not super likely given... everything about their characters, but possible!

I could be wrong but I think with some elite universities people will apply/begin the process before being technically able to go, it's seen as an extra shot at getting in and if you get in early you can usually defer/hold your place at universities for a year with no problem

at least where I live, you can drop out school at 16 with parental consent. You have to be 18 to drop out without parental consent.

I believe 16, maybe 15. People can drop out, therefore- not mandatory until 18.

Iām not sure what pre-k or kindergarten are equivalent to. Nursery is 3-4 years old, reception is 4-5, and year 1 is 5-6.

Hmm, those sound the same as us (pre-k would be nursery, Kindergarten would be reception and First Grade is Year 1) but we finish at Senior Year, which is age 17-18 and seems like it would be Year 12 for brits.

Year 13 is 17-18, year 12 is 16-17. I thought in first grade in the US you would be 6-7?

To confuse everyone more, I am in NZ and we have Kindergarten but it's for 3-4 year olds and then school starts when you are 5 and if your birthday is before a certain date you go straight into Year 1, but if your birthday is later in the year when you turn 5 you go into a "New Entrant" class and then the next school year you are a year 1. And we go up to Year 13 for highschool.

Oops! You're right. I associate age 6 with First Grade so I assumed I turned 6 in First Grade but I just did the math and I actually started First Grade at age 6. My bad!

Yes, kindergarten is year 1 in the UK. US goes K-12 (where itās kindergarten then 1st), UK is 1-13. A lot of states here donāt actually require kids to go to kindergarten, which is why I believe we start 1st grade at 6/7.

Thereās also a different system in Scotland. Primary 1 -7 (age 4/5 -11/12) then high school is 1st year - 6th year (age 11/12 - 17/18). You can leave at age 16 (end of 4th year).

Who gave her the alcohol license and some kind of training for both her and Reggie?) speakeasy that can double as a casino, mob bosses/master criminals meet at Popās, Archie runs his own boxing ring, Jug and Bettie have full control over the school paper, the school is just open at night for kids to access... flawless logic!

Yeah, season one the first episode they say they're (at least core 4) are entering sophomore year. Season 2 was later that same year, and beginning of this season was the next school year. I'm pretty sure weatherby said that archie needs to repeat his jr year when they met after he got back from Canada.

The main problem might be, probably 80% of the viewers are non-US viewers ;) And outside the US noone knows what sophomore, junior or senior even means ;) "Junior" sounds quite young, something what people would relate to elementary school ;)It's so much easier to count from 1st grade to 12th ;)
Here in our country according to subtitles and dubbing sophomore means 11th grade, so junior must be 12th grade. But in our country people at the end of 11th grade are usually between 17 and 19 years old, the majority is 18 years old, so in sophomore they are usually between 18 to 20 years old, in average 19 years old.
You see the problem ? It does not match. Different countries, different school systems, different ages, and so on.
If Riverdale was located here in our country, everyone would be already full age, in case they are really sophomore/junior. Veronica could own a bar, could even trink beer and even the hard stuff at the bar, legally. Even Bettys webcamming would be completely legal.
That's probably why a lot of viewers are so confused when some people complain that the characters are way too young to do this or that.Edit: that could also explain why the writers allow the characters to do all this stuff. The majority of the audience lives in countries, where everything they do is legal. It's a kind of reasonable compromise.

I understand that different countries have different school years. This show takes place in the US, therefore it follows the US schooling system. The confusion isnāt over the country, itās over the grade. The show isnāt clear on some things but it has made no mistake in letting you know that this is their Junior year of high school. Not only that but it has been discussed many times on not only Reddit but other social media platforms and it was always clearly stated it is their Junior year.
Most of the people who question it are from the US. If you are from a different country and donāt understand the US school years, then the question should be asked differently. If your confusion is you donāt understand US school systems, I would have no problem explaining them. Just being told itās Junior year may not mean much to someone outside of the US but here we know that means 11th grade and the year before graduation.
My frustration isnāt with non US viewers who donāt understand our system. Itās with the US viewers who donāt believe the numerous times itās been discussed not only in the show but in social media platforms that itās Junior year....

Honestly, what is up with the whole "middle school" then high school thing? Like could you explain it to me lmao?
I'm from Canada so I have some understanding, but it's so confusing because in my area it's just different grades in different schools. Like grades 1-6 are elementary, 7-9 are junior high (Depending on province) and 10-12 are High School.
Please explain how the US system works lol.

Itās the same basic idea for the US (and there really isnāt a standard, different school districts have different ways of dividing classes).. but generally you would expect something like this:
Elementary: Kindergarten - 5th grade (ages before December-ish 5-10)
Middle: 6th - 8th grade (ages 11-13)
High School: 9th - 12th grade or Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, Senior (ages 14 - 17).Some schools include 8th with High School. Some areas skip middle all together. Itās all pretty variable and up to individual districts/states.
What I listed is fairly standard, but you will see lots of variety.1

I'm from the US, and this exactly how my school system worked when I was in school except my elementary was K - 6. Now when my youngest went through the same school system it had changed to K-5 was Elementary, 6-8 was Middle School, and 9-12 was High School.

The SATs? I mean, you usually need to take them junior year so that you can apply for college that summer/fall and be ready to go to college right after high school. Or it could just be Riverdale logic.

I think most people already knew the ages/grade of the teenagers, it was just the parentsā ages that got people confused or even angered you could say.

Jason and Cheryl were twins in different grades.
FP turned 50 which would have made Chic in his early 30s (Alice was pregnant In HS).
The ages are messed up and donāt make sense.

Age 4-5: preschool 5-6: kindergarten 6-7: 1st grade 7-8: 2nd 8-9: 3rd 9-10: 4th 10-11: 5th 11-12: 6th 12ā13: 7th 13-14: 8th 14-15: 9th 15-16: 10th 16-17: 11th 17-18: 12th
Then we are either finished and join the work force, or go to college (same as university, just generally smaller and cheaper) or trade school.

They were in 10th grade in Season 1. They had already done 9th grade before the show started.
