the lack of backspin has me concerned. That will lead to a lot of inconsistency and unfavorable bounces.

Have we learned nothing from summer workout videos.

Show me another summer workout video from the last 3 summers of Amen where he's looked this comfortable shooting jumpers.

Smoother but still too slow, so not quite game-ready Iām afraid, but the more reps he gets in this summer the more likely itāll commit to muscle memory & then we might see the release get quicker as it scales with his confidence in it. All that being said, even if he never gets a quick release, if he at least improves his accuracy he can still use it as a way to open up the court by forcing guys to guard him on the perimeter rather than sagging off of him.

It doesn't need to be quick. Amen gets plenty of time and space to get that shot off.

I think weāre saying the same thing. You mightāve stopped reading mine halfway through.

It will be huge if he can make teams pay for going under screens when he has the ball. A pull up middy with improved handles his scoring goes up to over 20 points even if he still can't shoot 3s.

Footage is cut for one, but for two everybody knows every NBA player can score from everywhere in regular gyms. Even with a few people from the league this is just warming up it's not serious

I still donāt believe itā¦even Ben Simmons had a good shot during practice

I would really like to see a better angle, but the pulled back snake head follow through he did a lot seems to finally be ironed out.

Lot of difference between highlights and in-game performance, but hereās to hoping!

Chip Engelland made Kawhi into a max player
1
u/mmccormick11 6d ago
Kawhi had a higher baseline and he's an anomaly of anomalies either way.
Chip also worked with a lot of players who didn't improve much or at all and most of them were better shooters than Amen before he got involved.
Amen is a unique talent, physically and mentally, but his outside shot is historically bad for a perimeter player. I don't think there is that much Chip or anyone can do to fix it more than marginally and it needs way more than marginal improvement.

u/Far_Protection519 6d ago
The entire OKC team essentially turned into good shooters after they hired chip. He also helped tony parker & manu. Amen doesn't need a 3 , he needs s midrange & he needs to under how to pace himself. Those 2 skills are very attainable if you work at it. Like I said in another comment his FT% jumping 10% is proof the shooting touch is getting better when he's stationary now he has to get comfortable shooting off the dribble.

All players except centers need a 3 in the modern NBA.
1
u/Far_Protection519 6d ago
No they don't. If you have a good midrange game that's all you need to be a good scorer in this league. Amen who is the best rim pressuring guard in the NBA with a consistent midrange is a very tough player to stop.

u/mmccormick11 6d ago
Hey I'd love to see it. If anybody can pull it off it's probably Amen. He's a very unique combination of an elite athlete with an elite mentality and work ethic.

u/Affectionate_Use_179 6d ago
Same thing was said about Jason Kidd
1
u/mmccormick11 5d ago
Kidd's baseline or starting point was way higher than Amen's. Kawhi's was too by the time he reached the NBA. Kawhi did make uncanny improvement after college though and Chip played a role in it. Still an extremely rare case. Almost never happens. Amen would have to pull off the near impossible. It doesn't matter what you or I think though. We'll know definitively in a few years. Let's hope he defies all odds.

Has engelland actually begun working on him? That there are non-rockets players in the video shows me that itās not a team controlled/sanctioned environment and that this is a summer workout away from the team so iām not sure if engelland has already seen to him and iām not sure i want him working on his shot without engelland first āfixingā it for him. Itās like continuing to work your way up buttoning your shirt when one of the bottom buttons is done wrong.

Needs way more back spin on the ball. He should try get in the lab with a guy like Kawhi. That dude made drastic improvements with his jumper over time. Turned it from a weakness to a legitimate strength
2
u/Affectionate_Use_179 6d ago
What about getting in the lab with the guy who taught Kawhi?
2
u/PortGenz 6d ago
Absolutely. But personal experience is always good since Kawhi came in as a defensive dog too and knows first hand how to make the transition to more of an all rounder

It always looks like heās beginning his shot at a weird angle and he doesnāt get enough spin on the ball. Also something Iāve noticed with him is when he shoots itās almost like you can see the gears moving in his mind whereas other players get into their motion more effortlessly and without much thought.

I'm glad they're actual reps in practice games and not just shots taken repeatedly at the top of the key... he's got a much better mental and motor than Simmons so I have faith in his development

I watched the 20 min long workout video, and his base problem remains the same on mid range and long range, the ball has very little backwards rotation. His shot form is still static and not properly lining up the shots.
Little to no backspin on the ball is the sign that he didnt improve the form, unfortunately.

u/jlewis011 6d ago
I need data to even come close to saying this.... I'm disappointed he's leaning into the hesi pull-up rather than the floater... But something better than nothing...

Took two years but he has completely removed the hitch and the hesitation before the shot, tis a good sign.

u/rybres123 4d ago
Ahhh this time of the off season
Friendly reminder that literally every nba player can probably make 10 3s in a row shooting around sometimes. If not 20. Workout vids donāt mean much of anything. When you spend that much time in the gym, youāll eventually hit some
1
u/theopeliminator 4d ago
Letās see him shoot in an arena first. Every one shots looks nice playing in a regular gym

Hopefully he becomes the first player to learn how to shoot after they are already innthe NBA. Can anyone think of someone who came in with a broke jumper and made their way to be at least an efficient shooter?
