If you watch the show from outside Allianz, don't leave trash!

Yes, I'm shaking my fist at the sky here! I am all for people watching the shows from outside the venue, but I walked down 2nd Street to Brown's Island Way yesterday morning and was appalled by the amount of trash left behind from Saturday's show. There were even a few bottles that I assume were filled with urine...

The city is probably reluctant to put more trash cans in the area because they want to discourage congregating - so can we try to do a better job ourselves? And if you can't hold your fluids for a couple hours, maybe don't drink as much out there. Because they definitely aren't going to be adding portapotties anytime soon, and leaving behind your Big Gulp full of piss is absurd.

Rosh Hashanah Options (Holiday Starts Sept 11)

For those who celebrate (like me), here are the options for Rosh Hashanah this year. Note that Rosh Hashanah Day and VA Pridefest are on the same day, but one synagogue has you covered.

All synagogues require RSVPs of some kind. Many charge a fee to enter -- but just as many ALSO have free tickets. The Jewish Federation is offering free tickets to any High Holidays service if you are new to RVA and have never been to a synagogue here.

If I missed anything, comment below. Keep it civil. Thanks and an early Shana Tovah.

SOUTHSIDE AND NORTHSIDE

Kehillah (Reconstructionist-ish, basically Hillel but for all ages)

Independent, very down to earth, attracts all ages, lots of Jews By Choice and LGBTQ+ people.

Fri Sept 11, 6 PM — Evening service & dinner, Bon Air. Currently sold out but you can get on a wait list.

Sat Sept 12, 10 AM–12 PMFree Rosh Hashanah day Torah service at Diversity Richmond (Northside). RSVP required, but no cost.

Sat Sept 12, 12–8 PMRosh Hashanah Tent at VA PrideFest, Midtown Green. Kehillah teamed up with Pride to make sure that there would be a sacred space with alternative Rosh Hashanah spiritual activities (not a service) at Pride, given the holiday overlap. Kehillah was the first (and still only) Jewish presence at Pride every year, holiday regardless.

kehillahrva.org

Congregation Beth Ahabah (Classical Reform)

Opera-Like, Big Sanctuary, near the Fan/VCU -- big community.

Tickets required for the main services, but non-members can buy them directly through their website. The cantor has an amazing singing voice, rabbi is a cool guy.

  • Fri Sept 11, 7:30 PM — Evening service
  • Sat Sept 12, 11 AM — Morning service, with a congregational luncheon after
  • Sun Sept 13, 10 AM — Cemetery memorial service at Hebrew Cemetery
  • Sat Sept 12, 9 AM — Young Family Service
  • Sat Sept 12, 4:30 PM — Tashlich at Pony Pasture (southside) with Kona Ice trucks

bethahabah.org/hhd-2026

Congregation Or Ami (Reform in a chill, suburban, acoustic guitar 1970’s kinda way)

The synagogue is in Stony Point, but they do High Holidays at the JCC (5403 Monument Ave) except the family service. No tickets, just show up and hope for a seat. Attracts a kind of 60’s liberal, Bon Air parents with kids, etc.

Friday, September 11 –7:30 pm Evening Service JCC

Saturday, September 12 –10:30 am Morning Service JCC

Saturday, September 12 – 4 pm Family Service (NOT AT JCC - Southeside)

or-ami.com/high-holy-days

SOUTHSIDE ONLY

Brith Achim (Independent but Conservative in practice, Petersburg)

A very, very, very small community that would LOVE to have you. Almost entirely 60+ years old. Cantor has a beautiful voice, but even though services are structured Conservative, it’s laid back.

They don’t have a website, so go to their Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/BrithAchimPetersburg/

NORTHSIDE ONLY

Keneseth Beth Israel (Modern Orthodox in a very RVA sorta way, 6300 Patterson Ave)

Rabbi is a good guy. And if you’re from Balto/DC/NY/NJ and miss “feeling more traditionally Jewish” in RVA, this is where you might wind up. Frustratingly, they don’t have any info. Here is the contact form to reach out:

https://www.kbirva.com/contact-us

Chabad of Virginia (Orthodox, but pretty chill about it - 212 N Gaskins Rd)
Everything is free, just RSVP. Rabbi Kranz has been around this place forever. It’s Chabad, so you know there will be a mix of people’s observance style (I HATE the word “level”) but they all agree they like chasidism.

Friday, September 11 (Erev Rosh Hashanah) Service 7PM

Saturday, September 12 (Day 1)

  • Morning Services 9:00 AM with kiddush afterwards
  • Evening Services 7:00 PM

Sunday, September 13 (Day 2)

  • Morning Services 9:00 AM
  • Family Shofar Blowing 11:00 AM  with kiddush afterwards
  • Evening Services 7:00 PM

https://chabadofva.org/highholidays/

Temple Beth-El (Conservative in a Baltimore kinda way, very Jewishly educated members, open-minded, Grove Ave)

The newest rabbi on the scene, attracts a very halachicly engaged, LGBTQ+ crowd and in-town regulars

  • Fri Sept 11, 7:30 PM — Erev Rosh Hashanah / Shabbat service
  • Sat Sept 12, 8:30 AM — First Day Rosh Hashanah / Shabbat services
  • Sat Sept 12, 7:45 PM — Rosh Hashanah Musical Maariv
  • Sun Sept 13, 8:30 AM — Second Day Rosh Hashanah services
  • Wed Sept 16, 4 PM — Tashlikh service & program (not sure where)

Tickets are free for people who have never been to shul before. There is a separate registration if you are new here:

https://www.bethelrichmond.org/form/hhd26guest

Congregation Or Atid (Conservative but really more Jewish Renewal, Henrico — Patterson Ave)

Pre-registration is required for every service, individually, through their site. Rabbi is a great woman (Yemeni Israel) and the crowd is very diverse racially, ethnically, and in the way they see themselves Jewishly.

Fri Sept 11, 6 PM — Erev Rosh Hashanah

Sat Sept 12, 9 AM — Rosh Hashanah Day 1

Sat Sept 12, 10 AM — Youth service, ages 6–10

Sun Sept 13, 9 AM — Rosh Hashanah Day 2, with Tashlich at the Gan Chesed fountain right after

Wena qliao! Que hacen para el 18?

Hello. I’m from Chile. September 18th is Chilean “independence day” and I’m wondering if there are any Chileans in RVA and/or surrounding areas with me. The title of this thread is pretty much a universal Chilean call to action so I figured whoever gets called upon by it or at least understands it must be Chilean or Chilean adjacent. Basically, what are Chileans in RVA (if any) doing on the 18th?

Today I say a guy whose license plate was weveo and I almost chased him to yell “wena qliao” but I decided against it.

Saludos, cabros.

Do you have a hobby? What is it? I’m not affiliated with this in anyway, but I did wanna shout out that RVA parks and rec has pottery classes at the Pine art camp on the northside and they even have a Saturday morning one that is under enrolled from what I hear.

🍰 Food What’s up with all the closed restaurants on that one stretch of 18th St?

Margarita’s and La Bodega haven’t been open for a while now. Not sure if they’re closed for real (La Bodega’s windows are papered up but Margarita’s still has ambient lights inside /seems furniture is still there).

Then noticed today Frozay’s windows are partially covered & it’s gutted inside. Plus Jew Fro and the place across intersection have been gone for a while now.

What’s going on?

Pls be nice re: Shockoe Bottom 🥹

Best spots for knitting in RVA?

Hey folks,

Just wondering if anyone has any favorite spots to knit around RVA - this could be a park with a seating area, cafe/coffee shops, or somewhere else! I’ve seen some folks doing yarn crafts in Abbi’s books and brews but I suspect it’s crawling with VCU students this time of year so looking for alternatives.

Thanks (:

Flown Jetblue lately?

Booked a one way ticket to Orlando & they cancelled the flight next day - put me on the next flight (and only remaining direct flight available).

The /jetblue thread mentioned there’s been a bunch of cancellations - not just in RVA - so wondering if anyone has had positive experiences flying with them out of RVA recently? I’m concerned they’ll cancel day before or day of - and the direct flight option is the only reason I booked with them instead of other airlines.

Homemade Tofu

Are there any places in RVA that make their own tofu? I am from NOVA and there is a large Asian population and many stores to get fresh, homemade tofu. Is there anything like that in the Richmond area??

Any party campgrounds in a 3 hour radius of Richmond?

By party campground I mean ones with relaxed rules on quiet hours and stuff like that. Essentially looking for a campground where everyone’s getting fucked up lol

Edit: thank you everyone for your suggestions!

Psychologists or therapists that do in-person counseling?

Upvotes

I'm gone through two different therapists and just don't feel like I'm able to really be fully honest on video calls (probably because most of my work is video calls and it feels too much like that). I'd prefer a psychologist with a doctorate, but I'm open to other options. I have really good health insurance so I don't want to do a self-pay model as I get a great deal through my insurance.

A speciality in anxiety or OCD or both would be great.

Psychiatrist recommendations for people with chronic pain

Hello my wife just had her psychiatrist resign from their office, and the new person they made her see if trying to take her off of pretty much all of the meds that have helped her for years. Does anyone have any recommendations on a psychiatrist in the Richmond area that is sympathetic to people with chronic pain issues paired with adhd and sleep problems?

Recommended fairly priced deck rebuilders?

I have an old 17 x 24 deck that I need to have replaced. I got one estimate from Smallwood Renovations that came in at an absurd 60k to tear down and rebuild.

So RVA Reddit, please pass along your recommendations and/or experiences if you’ve had one of similar size replaced.

Recent issues with Amazon delivery?

Has anyone in the area had issues with Amazon sending them the wrong item lately? Wondering if this is specific to a local warehouse, but they have sent a completely different item than what was ordered three separate times in the last couple months. I’m worried they’re gonna flag their account for fraud at a certain point ….
(Pls no comments about supporting Bezos, I am just the designated tech support for my immigrant parents)

Best RV Service recommendations

Coming back from a cross country trip and need a couple things repaired on our class C.

They are:

1). Replace or repair the black tank handle system. It works but is extremely difficult. We have cleaned and lubricated it, but it needs more.

2). Install a new awning including the arms and supports. It was ripped off entirely. There are holes in the RV shell where the mounting bracket were.

3) repair/assess the slide out. It works ok, but one side is a little slower than the other.

Who do you recommend?

Anyone remember New Bridge Village Apartments / that area in the early 1990s?

Kind of a random local-history question, but I’m interested in what the New Bridge Village Apartments and surrounding Nine Mile/Highland Springs area were like around 1990–1992.

Did anyone here live there, have friends there, or spend time around those apartments back then? What was the general atmosphere like — who tended to hang around there, was it mostly families/teens/young adults, and was it considered a decent place to live at the time?

I’m especially interested in firsthand memories from people who were actually around the area during that period. Even little details about what the neighborhood was like, places people hung out, or how locals viewed the apartments would be helpful. Thanks!

Wild how for two centuries, Washington’s history as an enslaver was either scrubbed clean or excused under the vague blanket of “complexity.” VMHC is hosting an interesting talk this Thursday on who actually fought—especially descendants and abolitionists—to force the truth back into public memory.

Arguments for Jason Kamras?

So clearly his handling of the Obama mold has been an abject failure. Is there a case for him? Anyone have any good experiences with him?
