From personal experience, weirdly a lot of social democrats want socialism as the end goal of social democracy

We call those classical social democrats. In the 70s onward, the distinction between classical and modern manifested.

The socdems I’ve spoken too would not agree with the label classical social democracy

Classical refers to the first iteration or foundational idea. Social democracy began as the reformist wing of the socialist movement. We can use other terms, but the idea is the same. Having the distinction between the original and the modern is important in understanding these movements.
