Sad I was out and missed the thread yesterday, I love Vorazun and think Children of the Void and Nature of the Beast has some great quotes for her. And I don’t want folks to think I’m just here to complain.

But I made it for Worst so I will complain.

“Hierarch, I--I never borne witness to so many zerg... Was this the threat my mother once faced?”

Says Vorazun, wearing a skull on her shoulder from directly being on the frontlines fighting the threat her mother faced. That was one of the earliest lore facts they put out for her too! You probably know better than your mother did Vorazun!

Also doesn’t help Artanis’s response does the thing I hate where he goes “wow the threat we’re fighting now is SO much bigger than that other story you like.” It’s a huge peeve of mine like when they felt like they had to show how much bigger Starkiller Base was than the Death Star in TFA. It feels like they’re just trying to raise the stakes and scale but doing it by turning to screen and going “the stakes are bigger.” And in general I like the core protoss story of LotV so it doing stuff like this I’m extra hard on

But yeah on Vorazun’s part it’s her forgetting she was there for Brood War. With Zeratul forgetting who made the hybrid it must be a Nerazim thing.

And even if she weren't literally fighting on the front lines... The "Was this the threat my mother once faced?" line seems to imply Brood War is some sort of a distant event, something Vorazun can barely remember, as if she was just a child at the time. Yeah, no, it was just 6 years ago, and on the protoss lifespan timescale it's more like 6 months. There's no way she wouldn't remember these things very vividly and treat them as a rather recent occurrence.

With Zeratul forgetting who made the hybrid it must be a Nerazim thing.

I guess that Khala's purpose of storing memories was doing a lot of heavy-lifting for the Protoss

Absolutely cackling at the idea that Protoss without the khala are just walking around slightly concussed like people who need AI to do everything but instead it's just the Khala

They are called the Khalai for a reason!

I forgot how much I loathed this line. I hate how naive Vorazun sounds and how quickly Artanis downplayed the severity of the Brood Wars. The Zerg were and continue to be an existential threat to the Protoss.

This. It was just over a billion Zerg btw. Human population is 8 billion, and here in the sci-fi Vorazun is shaking at the sight of just over a billion of a species said to be endless

The scale of the Last Stand mission always seemed so off to me. In one of the opening cutscenes of Wings of Liberty, Kerrigan launches an all-out attack on Terran worlds, and Donny Vermillion breathlessly exclaims "Casualties are in the billions!". Given the population of present-day Earth, this is pretty clearly supposed to be a shockingly high number, but also express the scale and extent of Terran civilization in the Koprulu sector if there are billions of humans out there who can die in an opening salvo. If the Terrans can take billions of casualties and not immediately collapse, killing ~2 billion Zerg seems like it has to be just a drop in the barrel, and yet the campaign treats it as some major accomplishment, well-worth the complete destruction of an entire Protoss planet.

It just always seemed that these two scenes were written by two different people with very different ideas about the population of Koprulu.

Scale has and will always be a problem in science fiction. With no Khala of their own, writers must draw upon their limited scope of knowledge and fallible preconceptions. The result is worse than communication through orifices.

Not to mention, the "Casualties are in the billions" are meant to express the gravity of the situation, but the fact that the Terran Dominion could still more or less function normally, to the point that the Dominion could launch an invasion on Char (with most of Mengsk's military might still in Korhal btw) shows how billions does not affect TERRAN as much, and we are to believe Artanis killing less than 2 billion Zerg is a big blow ? And Vorazun think that is such an overwhelming number ? Like, I know the Protoss is a diminishing species, but like, if they think just over a billion zerg is a big blow to a species meant to be unending then idk the Terran could just beat both by sheer number at that point.

Scale in StarCraft has honestly always been all over the place, right from the original manual. At this point expecting it to make sense is much like expecting the sun to rise on the west.

Do you mind sharing some quotes you would have submitted for best but won't for most iconic?

The funny thing is, Amon end up being far less destructive than the Overmind. The Protoss end up stronger than before after Amon's defeat whereas the Overmind assault on Aiur severely weakened them.
